A couple years ago, Marvel received copyright termination notices from comic book artist / writer Larry Lieber and the estates of fellow artists / writers Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Don Heck and Don Rico that would have caused them to lose the sole copyrights to such characters as Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and others, as well as titles like Amazing Fantasy, The Avengers, Captain America, Daredevil, Iron Man, Journey Into Mystery, Marvel Super-Heroes, Strange Tales, Tales to Astonish, Tales of Suspense, and Tomb of Dracula. As reported in 2021, Marvel filed a series of lawsuits in response to those copyright termination notices. Now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that all of those lawsuits have been settled.
The termination notices targeted not just specific artwork and stories, but also “any character, story element, or indicia reasonably associated with the Works.” As The Hollywood Reporter explains,...

“Good morning aviators,” Tom Cruise says in a line from blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick. “This is your captain speaking. Today’s exercise is dogfighting.”
Specifically, there is now a legal dogfight between the film’s box office high-flyer Paramount Pictures and the Israeli-based widow and son of the author of the 1983 article that inspired the original 1986 movie.
In a copyright suit filed Monday in California federal court, Shosh Yonay and Yuval Yonay want unspecified but clearly big-bucks damages from the studio and, with a very odd sense of timing, an injunction to stop screenings and distribution of the May 27-released sequel, as well as any more more movies in the franchise.
Calling Top Gun: Maverick “derivative,” the Marc Toberoff- and Alex Kozinski-represented Yonays allege that Paramount is “thumbing its nose at the statute” that allows the termination of rights after 35 years (read the court complaint here).

Marvel filed five lawsuits on Friday seeking to block comic book creators and their heirs from reclaiming copyrights to such major characters as Spider-Man and Doctor Strange.
The move comes after heirs of five Marvel authors filed dozens of termination notices with the U.S. Copyright Office. If they were to succeed, the notices would not prevent Marvel from using the disputed characters, which were created by multiple collaborators. They would however require the studio to make payments to the heirs.
In the lawsuits, Marvel argues that the characters were created under “work for hire” arrangements, and that the heirs have no valid claim to the copyrights.
Marvel points to a key case involving Jack Kirby, who co-created “The X-Men,” “Thor” and “Iron Man.” In that case, Kirby’s heirs sought to reclaim copyright to his creations, but the federal courts sided with Marvel, finding that the characters were made under work-for-hire arrangements.

Co-created by Stan Lee, Don Rico & Don Heck, Black Widow made her first appearance in 1964's Tales of Suspense #52, published by Marvel Comics. Introduced as an antagonist for Iron Man, Natasha Romanova was a Russian spy who later defected to the United States, becoming an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and a member of the Avengers. In 2010, the character (renamed Natasha Romanoff) made her film debut in John Favreau's Iron Man 2, played by Scarlett Johansson. She has since appeared in six Marvel movies, including 2019's Avengers: Endgame, in which she sacrificed herself so Hawkeye could retrieve the Soul Stone, saving her best friend — and all humankind — from the genocidal warlord Thanos. Now, Natasha is getting her own standalone adventure, a prequel exploring the fan-favorite character's origins in surprising & exciting ways. Directed by Cate Shortland (of the films Lore and Berlin Syndrome) from a screenplay by Eric Pearson,...

Just in time for this Sunday’s premiere of “Batwoman” on The CW, we’ve compiled a list of other memorable and bad-ass superheroines. From “Wonder Woman” to “Captain Marvel,” here are some super-women you don’t want to mess with.
Wonder Woman
Whether you met her first in DC Comics, played by Linda Carter in the 1970s, or played by Gal Gadot in Patty Jenkin’s 2017 hit film, if you know only one name on this list, chances are it’s this one. Created in 1941 by William Moulton Marston and H.G. Peter, Wonder Woman is the immortal, super-strong, magical genius daughter of Zeus and Hippolyta. After moving to the world of mortals as an emissary of the Amazons, she fights for justice and equality solo and as a founding member of the Justice League against a rogues list that includes literal gods and colorful criminals like Cheetah. It was a melancholy milestone on Friday: Marvel Comics pioneer Stan Lee would have been celebrating his 96th birthday and likely basking in the achievement of Black Panther and The Avengers: Infinity War, which are about to finish 2018 as the year’s two top-grossing films. Both movies were (like so many superhero movies) based on Lee’s creations.
The publishing icon died Nov. 12 in Los Angeles as the comic book medium’s greatest ambassador and as Hollywood’s long-reigning King of Cameos. But in the 1960s, Lee was a relentless I.P. machine, churning out new signature Marvel characters almost by the month at times. It didn’t hurt that he was collaborating with legendary artists like Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, John Romita, John Buscema, Wally Wood, and Gene Colan.

Ok, this is no longer a rumor, this is some serious stuff we’re talking about.
Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios boss, has revealed that “discussions are already in the works to have Scarlett Johansson reprise her role as Natasha Romanoff in a Black Widow spinoff film.”
This has been rumored ever since Johansson was first cast in the role for Iron Man 2, but now it’s official, and we must admit that it’s nice to hear another female superhero is coming.
So, Black Widow is getting her own movie… But, of course, only after guys from Marvel are done with The Avengers.
Feige said: “We’ve already started discussions with Scarlett about the idea of a solo movie and have begun putting together concepts, but “The Avengers” comes first.”
On the other hand, Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau also agreed, saying:
“Hell yes, I would love to see that.

“Iron Man 2” hits theaters this weekend in the U.S., and while the first film served primarily as an origin tale and introduction to the character, this second film promises to expand upon the character and his world by drawing upon several different characters and storylines from the Marvel Universe.

Last week, "Iron Man 2" director Jon Favreau described how his latest film would avoid "multi-villainitis," by inserting the new characters into the pre-existing relationships of the first film. For example, Scarlett Johansson's enigmatic Black Widow will come between Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and his long-time confidant, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow).
And while it's not currently clear if the Black Widow will be villainous or a heroic character within the movie, Favreau believes the ambiguity is an important part of her appeal.
"She is not what she presents herself as but I don't want to say more," related Favreau during an interview with the Los Angeles Times. "It's fun to keep people guessing. Part of the comics is the mystery surrounding character and then the sexual dynamic but also the cold-blooded efficiency like the spider."
