“Good evening America, proud to be here in cold Washington DC,” said Bruce Springsteen on Wednesday night, kicking off the Celebrating America apogee of today’s unprecedented inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
If you had any questions about the tone the concert special was going to aim for, the Boss’ choice of an acoustic rendition of his hymn-themed “Land of Hope and Dreams” should have provided the answer. The Ricky Kirshner- and Glenn Weiss-produced event was more a steady commemoration than a celebration for a wounded nation and body politic.
You can put all the Black Puma, Tim McGraw and Tyler Hubbard, DJ Cassidy, Ozuna and Luis Fonsi, Katy Perry, Foo Fighters, prerecorded Justin Timberlake, Ant Clemons and Demi Lovato you like on-screen, and please do. However, the core of tonight was always to be found in Springsteen’s lyric of “faith will be rewarded.”

In any other inauguration week in Washington, D.C., the city would be filling up with people in a festive atmosphere. Celebrities would be flying in, some in private jets, to take the stage for a pre-swearing in concert at the Lincoln Memorial. Cher recalled that when she attended in 2009, “People, strangers I didn’t know were running around Georgetown hugging and kissing, and they were so thrilled because we were going into a new direction.”
The pandemic and, more recently, significant security threats have forced a vastly scaled back inauguration, limiting personal action and, in the case of the fenced up National Mall, any people at all.
Instead, the inaugural committee of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris has come up with a slate of virtual programming this week, including Sunday night’s We the People Concert, that featured Cher, James Taylor, Ben Harper, Barbra Streisand, Will.i.am, Fall Out Boy and DJ Cassidy,...

DJ Cassidy’s popular “Pass the Mic” webcast series is going to TV on Thanksgiving weekend… and going totally ’80s. BET’s Nov. 29 broadcast of “The Soul Train Awards” will be immediately followed by a second prime-time special that will bring Cassidy’s all-star medleys, usually seen via Twitch and YouTube, to a network for the first time. And while the star DJ isn’t revealing any names yet, he is telling Variety that this edition of his mic-pass will bring together the leading lights of R&b from a decade that happens to be his favorite

It seems like sacrilege to take a track with as rich and organic of sounds as DJ Cassidy’s “Kill The Lights” and sterilize it with synths and effects. Then you remember that a straight-up disco record wouldn’t work on as many modern dance floors as a future house track would, and suddenly Audien‘s remix doesn’t seem so bad.
For what it’s worth, only some of the important parts are missing anyways. Audien keeps Jess Glynn and Alex Newell’s crisp vocal harmony almost perfectly intact, and while much of Nile Rogers’ upbeat guitar licks are missing, they’ve been replaced by a rubbery bass line that gives the track a bit of future house appeal.
When it’s all said and done, though, DJ Cassidy’s original version left some awfully big shoes to fill. Recording with a full orchestra was what gave so much...
