Exclusive: The upcoming third season of Netflix’s Locke & Key will be its last. But fans of the supernatural thriller based on the Idw comic books by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez should not fret — they will get a proper conclusion since Season 3 was conceived as the show’s final chapter. In fact, I hear that, following the breakout success of Locke & Key‘s ten-episode first season, Netflix approached the series’ creative team with a plan for a three-season run consisting of a 10-episode second season and an eight-episode third season. That fit the vision of Locke & Key executive producers/co-showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill for how to tell the story and when to wrap it.

When Daily Dead took part in a Locke & Key roundtable call earlier this year, co-showrunner (along with Carlton Cuse) Meredith Averill said that they have "...stories for a few seasons to come percolating in our brains...", and it looks like that statement is becoming a reality, because not only was the show renewed for a second season back in March, it's now been renewed for a third season by Netflix before the second season has even premiered.
Multiple outlets are reporting the renewal news, including The Hollywood Reporter, along with the announcement that Meredith Averill has signed a deal with Netflix for "TV and other projects."
Here's what co-showrunner Cuse had to say about the season 3 renewal (via THR):
"We have some incredible adventures in store for the Locke family in season 3, and could not be more excited to continue telling our story with our great partners at Netflix.

The long wait for Wynonna Earp Season 4 will be over next month.
Syfy has announced the long-gestating next chapter in the hit supernatural series will launch Sunday, July 26, at 10/9c.
Unfortunately, there will be a midseason break thrown in.
The Covid-19 response has forced the season to take a hiatus after the August 30 installment, but Syfy intends to get the series back into production on the final six episodes of the season when it is safe to do so.
For now, the cabler maintains that the final episodes will materialize before the end of the year.
A brand-new trailer has also dropped, which shows a lot of what fans can expect of the upcoming season.
On Season 4, “the infamous Earp Curse is broken, and witty and wild demon hunter Wynonna Earp would love to be celebrating with cold whiskey and hot donuts,” reads the official synopsis.

When Daily Dead took part in a Locke & Key roundtable call earlier this year, co-showrunner (along with Carlton Cuse) Meredith Averill said that they have "...stories for a few seasons to come percolating in our brains...", and now one of those future seasons has become a reality, as Netflix has officially renewed the adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez's beloved Idw graphic novels for a second season.
The renewal news was announced on Locke & Key's official Twitter account (see below). A premiere date and episode count for the second season (the first season consists of 10 episodes) have yet to be revealed, and we'll be sure to keep Daily Dead readers updated as more details are announced.
In the meantime, check out highlights from the "Inside Keyhouse" press event and Sara Clements' review of the first season, and in case you missed it, Castlevania was recently renewed for a fourth season by Netflix.

“Locke & Key” is officially coming back for a second season.
Netflix has renewed the supernatural horror drama, which debuted in Feb. after more than a decade in development at both Hulu and Netflix. Co-showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill opened up about the show’s lengthy ride to the small screen during a Variety interview earlier this year.
The series is based on the Idw Publishing comic book franchise of the same name by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. It revolves around three siblings, Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones) and Bode (Jackson Robert Scott), who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them.

Netflix dropped the trailer for “Locke & Key” on Wednesday morning, which is the first look at the streaming service’s long-awaited TV adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’ best-selling Idw comic book series about the Locke family and their magical home.
In the trailer, which you can view via the video above and this link, we see the Lockes — mother Nina (Darby Stanchfield) and her children, Bode (Jackson Robert Scott), Tyler (Connor Jessup) and Kinsey (Emilia Jones) — move into Keyhouse, their ancestral home, following the mysterious murder of their father, Rendell (Bill Heck).
It’s not long before the siblings discover the house is filled with magical keys, each with different powers, that could somehow be connected to their dad’s death. That would be cool and all except they also find out that, as Tyler puts it, a “crazy evil” demon is trying to steal them.

The streaming era has led to an explosion of content opportunities, as the rush into an on-demand world has created unlimited shelf space. While nowhere near the size of other comic book powerhouses like Marvel or DC, Idw Publishing marked its 20th anniversary this year. Idw launched Idw Entertainment in 2013, and has developed properties such as “Wynona Earp” — which returns for its long-awaited fourth season on Syfy next year — and “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.” Currently, Idw has four series in development with Netflix, including the Ian Somerholder-led “V Wars” (pictured above) and the long-gestating “Locke & Key” adaptation from Carlton Cuse. TheWrap spoke with Lydia Antonini, president of Idw Entertainment, about being a smaller comic book-based production outfit and why they’ll never do an overall deal with a studio or streamer. Three cheers for Syfy and the Canadian network Space!
Thanks to their ponying up more money for the much-beloved Wynonna Earp, it will rise again!
That's right, the Emily Andras favorite that has spawned Earpers all over the world is now set for a 2020 debut.
The production for Wynonna Earp Season 4 was supposed to start months ago, but a hiccup in the funding from producers Idw Entertainment nearly forced the end of the series.
The delay means they have to round up the cast again for new deals, as their options expired during the downtime.
Happy! and Deadly Class Canceled at Syfy
Given the talent involved and their love for the western-themed supernatural show, I have faith they'll all find a way to get back to business.
If you're wondering why Syfy didn't just forge ahead with the production finances be damned, well, they don't own the rights to the franchise.

“Wynonna Earp” fans can breathe easy.
Variety has learned that production on the show’s fourth season is set to begin with the premiere slated for summer 2020. Syfy had previously commissioned two more seasons of the Canadian import, but Idw Entertainment — which produces the show — had run into financial difficulties and was unable to begin shooting. Cineflix Studios has come aboard to co-produce with Cineflix Rights handling international sales for all four seasons of the series. Idw and SEVEN24 Films continue to produce.
The series airs on Syfy in the U.S. and Space in Canada. The first two seasons are also available on Netflix. The series is based on the Idw Publishing comic book series of the same name created by Beau Smith.
“Syfy has never wavered in its support of ‘Wynonna Earp,’ a unique and important series with some of the most passionate fans anywhere,” Syfy said in a statement.
Variety has learned that production on the show’s fourth season is set to begin with the premiere slated for summer 2020. Syfy had previously commissioned two more seasons of the Canadian import, but Idw Entertainment — which produces the show — had run into financial difficulties and was unable to begin shooting. The Wynonna Earp fandom can finally rejoice. There will be a fourth season of the popular series based on the Idw comic created by Beau Smith. Idw Entertainment, in partnership with Syfy, Space and Seven24 Films, said today that production on Season 4 is scheduled to begin later this year for premiere in summer 2020 on Syfy in the U.S. and Space in Canada. That will make for a two-year gap between seasons 3 and 4.
The fourth season of Wynonna Earp was delayed by issues with funding at Idw, which earlier in the year said that it was in danger of losing money on the show. Some of the difficulties stemmed from the series losing its international distribution deal with Netflix after the first two seasons.
