Uncertain line readings and torpid direction hamper the story of the first British woman to swim the Channel
It is the misfortune of this waterlogged British indie to be a true-life drama about a female endurance swimmer, coming out when people are still talking about Annette Bening in the Hollywood underdog heartwarmer Nyad, also about a female endurance swimmer. Nyad cuts powerfully and confidently through the water. This film, sadly, seems as if it’s got cramp after picking up a dozen verrucas in the footbaths.
Kirsten Callaghan plays Mercedes Gleitze, the young Brighton swimmer of German parentage in the 1920s on a mission to become the first British woman to swim the Channel, but facing snobbery, sexism and xenophobia at every stroke. Her main competitor in the female Channel-swimming stakes is the haughty Edith Gade (Victoria Summer), a notorious cheat – based on the discredited swimmer Mona McLennan – whose scandalous...

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has received a letter signed by 50 of Britain’s biggest stars, including Dame Judi Dench, Brian May Cbe, Leona Lewis, Gary Lineker OBE, James Arthur, Thandie Newton OBE, Alesha Dixon, Ricky Gervais, Mollie King and Dame Twiggy Lawson, urging him to implement a UK ban on the sale of real animal fur.
Animal protection organisation Humane Society International/UK which leads the #FurFreeBritain campaign in collaboration with other animal charities, is hopeful that a 2021 ban is possible now that the Brexit transition is completed.
Fur farming was banned in Britain almost two decades ago in 2003 as it was deemed too cruel. But since then Britain has imported more than £800 million worth of fur from countries including Finland, China, France and Poland, where animals experience severe suffering and distress on fur farms. This is a double standard that needs to end.

"If they think we're going down without a fight... Oh hell gnaw!" Gravitas Ventures has released a trailer for a Wtf film called Ratpocalypse, which surprisingly has nothing to do with the documentary Rat Film, nor does it have to do with the current state of the world. Well, but it kinda does. The film was already released in Moscow in 2015 and is just now getting a VOD release in America. Casper Van Dien stars as a Senator who delivers a speech in Moscow about corruption, claiming it will turn met into "rats". Suddenly this starts happening and people start turning into rats for real. The footage in the trailer is even weirder than it seems, if you dare to look. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Vladimir Uglichin's Ratpocalypse,...

An engaging, well-crafted and mounted drama, "Saving Mr. Banks" is the Golden Jubilee tribute to Walt Disney's 1964 family musical hit, "Mary Poppins".
The film is a very intimate representation that unravels the source, adaptation and making of the legendary classic, "Mary Poppins". Touted to be a "real story" of Walter Disney's travails in the making of the film, it also encapsulates the life of the author, P.L. Travers.

You might not know it yet, but Victoria Summer can do a little bit of everything.
A multitalented performer born in southeast England's bucolic Berkshire County, Summer trained as a dancer, a singer and an actress before landing her first movie role in 2008's The Zombie Diaries. She'll soon be starring in the upcoming film Dracula Reborn, a contemporary look at the classic tale by Bram Stoker. And although she's always loved scary movies, Summer didn't start out wanting to be one of the Count's bloody celluloid brides. Her heart belonged to the stage.
Summer started performing as a toddler. She began dance classes at age 3 and moved on to piano and acting lessons a few years later. "My acting debut was the lead in my Junior school Christmas concert. I was about 6 and I had a lot of lines," Summer remembers. "I went on to play an even bigger role in Senior school,...
