After numerous delays, Well Go USA’s Cut Throat City is finally making its debut — and in theaters. Yes, you heard that right. The RZA-directed crime drama will make its way into select theaters starting today as they slowly start to open their doors across the country.
“Well Go is a supporter of the traditional theatrical window and when we initially read the script a couple years ago we truly envisioned Cut Throat City as a wide theatrical release,” said Doris Pfardrescher, President & CEO, Well Go USA. “It is a socially relevant film that we feel needs to be seen on the big screen. We also want to help support the cinemas as best we can in bringing life back to their business.”
She added, “Obviously, safety is an important part of reopening but we do feel that the cinemas are taking every precaution to make us all and the environment feel safe.

Wu-tang Clan member turned filmmaker RZA is known for his affinity for anything and everything in the martial arts ilk, but as seen in the first trailer of Cut Throat City, he is going a different route. He took the Comic-Con stage in Hall H to wax poetic about how he relates to martial arts and how he honors it before switching gears to talk about the movie. He was joined by the cast Shameik Moore, Wesley Snipes, Demetrius Shipp Jr., Denzel Whitaker, Keean Johnson, Kat Graham, and Tyron Woodley to debut the trailer for the heist drama. T.I. and Terrence Howard also star but were unfortunately not able to join in on the Comic-Con fun.

It’s never explicitly stated that Hunter Miles is a member of the 27 Club, but that hasn’t stopped the folk musician (“folk” in terms of both his hero status and his particular brand of strummy rock) from getting grouped with other musicians who left this world too soon. The character at the heart of Sean Mewshaw’s “Tumbledown” is already dead and buried by the time the film opens – in fact, we visit his grave quite frequently, much like his many fans – but his specter looms over the entire feature, as does his cut-short legacy. A moody (maybe? or is that simply how a rocker of his ilk is perceived by the public?) singer/songwriter in the vein of Bon Iver and Elliott Smith, Hunter crafted exactly one solo album (one “perfect” album, as one character observes) before dying in an apparently freak hiking accident. He also left behind...

Of all the left-field composers out there — typically musicians who don’t follow the traditional rules of film composing — if Jon Brion isn’t at the very top, he’s very damn close. The musician, composer, producer (who has worked with folks like Fiona Apple, Kanye West, Of Montreal, Elliott Smith and more) has been tapped by filmmakers like Paul Thomas Anderson (“Magnolia,” “Punch Drunk Love”), Michel Gondry (“Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind”), David O. Russell (“I Heart Huckabees”), Charlie Kaufman (“Synechdoche, New York”), Miranda July (“The Future”) and more. In recent years he’s been moving towards comedies, especially for the films of Adam McKay (“The Other Guys,” “Step Brothers”), Vince Vaughn (“The Break-Up,” “Delivery Man”) and Judd Apatow. Brion scored “Funny People,” “This Is 40,” and has also written the music for the upcoming “Trainwreck” film starring Amy Schumer. The bête noir of all film composers is temp music — the music a.

Michael Cera dropped a surprise album last night, and you know what, it's pretty good. The 18 tracks are a mix of pleasant instrumentals and a sort of bedroom indie-folk. It's kind of like if Cass McCombs and Jason Schwartzman as Coconut Records tried to play Paul McCartney's Ram and upbeat versions of Elliott Smith songs. More than anything, it really is the music you'd imagine Michael Cera making in his spare time. Of course, this isn't Cera's first foray into music; beyond playing musicians in films, he was also the touring bass player for the really solid "Doom Wop" supergroup Mister Heavenly a few years back. The album, true that, is currently available to stream for free on Cera's Bandcamp. He truly is the Beyoncé of Michael Cera–types.

Minnie Driver releases her third album, “Ask Me To Dance,” on Oct. 7. The Rounder/Zoe release, Driver’s first since 2007’s “Seastories,” is a carefully curated selection of covers, including The Cure’s “Close To Me,” Neil Young’s “Tell Me Why,” Stevie Wonder’s “Master Blaster,” the Killers' “Human,” Neil Finn’s “Better Be Home Soon,” and even going back to the Sinatra standard, “Fly Me To The Moon.” A few weeks ago, HitFix premiered a snippet of Driver singing the late Elliott Smith’s “Waltz No. 2.” Today, we have the world premiere of Driver singing The Cure’s “Close To Me,” a song very close to her heart. “So when I was a girl, the only songs I would get asked to dance to were the faster ones and that was always The Cure songs,” Driver says. We wonder if she’s recalling her teen years or those...

When Elliott Smith sang "Miss Misery" at the Academy Awards in 1998, that gentle whisper of melancholy indie folk felt almost as if it had been included by mistake among the power anthems, perky Disney tunes and syrupy romantic ballads that usually populate the best original song field. Heaven Adores You, Nickolas Rossi's deeply respectful documentary tribute to the late singer-songwriter, shows an artist who was as much an uncomfortable anomaly in the pantheon of rock stars as he was on that stage surrounded by all the glitter of Hollywood. Financed via Kickstarter, and filled with commentary from friends,
