As we have mentioned many times before, and particularly after the restrictions placed in the movie industry internationally due to Covid, short filmmaking has been experiencing a surge in all aspects, with the quantity increasing as much as the quality, to the point that, now, these films can actually be better than their feature counterparts. In Asia in particular, the 2023 has been utterly impressive in that regard, with the short titles of intense quality coming one after the other. 25 of those we collected in this particular list, which we feel is one of the most competitive and overall impressive among the plethora we publish every year.
Without further ado, here are the best Asian Short Films of 2023, in reverse order, although the order, particularly in the first 10, could easily be completely different. Some may have may have premiered in 2022, but since they mostly circulated in 2023, we decided to include them.

Those memories are a blueprint for constructing a fictional narrative that sticks close to reality.

Sometimes, the shortest horror tales deliver the greatest shocks, and this is certainly the intent of filmmaker Ken Ochiai with his film “Kageboshi”. The short, the title of which translates literally as ‘silhouette’, showcases the director’s ability to craft an atmospheric horror project by effectively utilizing limited lighting, a brisk narrative, and impressive special effects.

Having moved from Japan with her father (Go Jibiki), a young girl (Anju Chiku) engages in a deadly game of tag with a shadow spirit that is haunting her family. Convinced that she could beat the spirit if given a chance, she soon learns the severity of her situation and the fatal cost of arrogance.
While the concept of the tag-playing shadow is obviously far-fetched, it’s executed in an exciting and engaging way. The creaky old house in which “Kageboshi” is set makes...

Chris Pratt, fresh from wrapping Jurassic World: Dominion for Universal, is attached to star in the film with Wu Jing, the star of the blockbuster Chinese franchise Wolf Warrior.

Based on the Japanese popular novel “Papa to Musume no Nanokanan”, which has already been adapted into a Japanese TV show in 2007 and into the Korean movie “Daddy You, Daughter Me”, “Daddy Issues” was equally successful with the aforementioned, breaking the Vietnamese box office with over 500,000 audience turning out in the first week. The story follows the concept of the body-swap, but entails a number of elements that set it apart. Let us take thing from the beginning, though.

Bad news for them, but good news for audiences who have made this a huge hit in its native Vietnam and now have the chance to see it on these shores with the Us release beginning Friday. As our own Todd Brown pointed out in a previous article, Saigon Bodyguards reflects the undergoing globalization of the film industry. Upcoming action-comedy is a curiously international affair. Produced by Canada's Rhombus Media - backers of Antiviral and Hobo With A Shotgun - with the backing of Korean giant Cj Entertainment - who are increasingly active in Vietnam - with JApanese writer-director Ken Ochiai (Tiger Mask), if you ever needed an example of the increasing globalisationof the film industry, this is it. And it also looks quite fun. Kim Ly and Thai Hoa play a pair of mismatched bodyguards in Saigon - one a seemingly perfect phsycial specimen and the other a goofy, sex obsessed prankster - hired to protect the young heir to a business empire in town for his father's funeral. This, of course, goes very badly. The comedy is quite regional but the...

Montreal’s genre festival ran from July 17-Aug 6 and saw audiences of more than 129,000; its Frontières co-production market also drew a record attendance, up 30% on 2013.
With more than 129,000 people attending screenings and events over its 18th year, Fantasia International Film Festival co-director Mitch Davis (pictured) has marked the event as an “extraordinary” year.
Speaking to Screen, Davis was particularly pleased that the smaller films shone through.

With more than 129,000 people attending screenings and events over its 18th year, Fantasia International Film Festival co-director Mitch Davis (pictured) has marked the event as an “extraordinary” year.
Speaking to Screen, Davis was particularly pleased that the smaller films shone through.
“We showcased just over 160 feature films, which is more than our norm and is, frankly, no subtle number,” said Davis. “The worry in doing that is the chancing that certain so-called smaller films could somehow fall between the cracks.
“I’m thrilled to say that this didn’t happen. It’s often the smaller independent discovery titles that we have some of the strongest love for and we go the extra mile to make sure they stand out and even then, anything could happen. Happily, a good...

On Wednesday evening, The Weinstein Company and Lexus hosted the Los Angeles premiere of their 2nd Annual Lexus Short Film Series ‘Life Is Amazing’.
Those in attendance included Harvey Weinstein, Kristen Bell, Allison Janney, Ted Danson and many others. TWC and Lexus challenged two rising filmmakers to interpret “Life is Amazing” through short film. The result were Market Hours (directed by Jon Goldman) and Operation Barn Owl (directed by Satsuki Okawa).
In Market Hours, Randall spends his days imagining the vibrant inner lives of various vendors at the multicultural urban market where he works; none more so than Angela, an angel with her own pastry shop. But Randall’s inattention to his work has led to a string of thefts and soon threatens to cost him his job. A chance encounter with a beautiful starlet and her lapdog provides Randall not only an opportunity to break the ice with Angela,...

Ken Ochiai’s film is the first in a series of smaller-budget films aimed at international markets.
Japanese studio Shochiku has launched a series of smaller-budget movies aimed at international markets, starting with Ken Ochiai’s Ninja The Monster.
Starring Dean Fujioka, the film sees undercover ninjas square off against alien monsters during the samurai era.
Currently in post-production, the film is being readied for delivery in autumn. Shochiku plans to test it in international markets before deciding on dates for the Japanese release.
“[Japanese] action films sell overseas, but budgets were hitting around $10m, which is difficult to recoup from international markets,” said Shochiku’s Kazu Moriguchi.
“The idea with these films is to lessen the risk by combining high concepts with low budgets. With our in-house resources they look like they cost a lot more.”
Shochiku plans to produce around three films budgeted at around $240,000 each year. Next up is Ninja Hunter (working title) about a man who...

We're not overly familiar with this one but we soon will be. Here comes a teaser for the new movie directed by Ken Ochiai, based upon the manga series "Tiger Mask" by Ikki Kajiwara. The film has attracted a lively cast however, including the likes of Eiji Wentz (Kitaro and the Millennium Curse), Natsuna (Gantz), and Shô Aikawa (Dead or Alive). The Tiger Mask persona is instantly recognisable by its trademark mask, designed to look like a tiger's head, as well as the combination of high flying attacks and martial arts in the wrestling ring. This will be the third movie based on the manga, the first two arriving in the 1970s, though the Tiger Mask persona has continued to appear in wrestling arenas since that time. The Tiger Mask opens its cape and its doors sometime in November 2013. The teaser trailer doesn't give much away but it will certainly do for now.

The Fantasia Film Festival is taking place from July 18th to August 6th in Montreal and will feature over 100 films from around the world. We gave you a look at the initial lineup last month and now have an additional list of Fantasia 2013 films that will be screening, including Curse of Chucky, You’re Next, and Frankenstein’s Army:
Horror Is Child’S Play – Don Mancini’S Curse Of Chucky (World Premiere)
A rarity among genre franchises, the Child’S Play series (begun in 1988) has retained the sure-handed guidance of original screenwriter/creator Don Mancini throughout killer doll Chucky’s decades’-long reign of horror. Mancini, who will be hosting our “scar-studded” world premiere, graduated to the director’s chair with 2004’s Seed Of Chucky, after having co-written or written every entry in the series. His longevity with the project is, of course, matched by the fiendish voiceover work by...

As the superhero genre continues to dominate the summer blockbuster season in Hollywood, with Man of Steel and Iron Man 3 already box office smash hits, Japan has followed suit with Hentai Kamen and the upcoming Gatchaman. Also joining in on this hot trend is the return of the fictional masked professional wrestler known as The Tiger Mask (タイガーマスク). Based on the classic 60's manga of the same name from writer Ikki Kajiwara and artist Naoki Tsuji, the live action film takes inspiration from American superheroes like Batman and Spider-Man on reinventing the hero for the new generation. The film is directed by Ken Ochiai and the cast include Eiji Wentz (Gegege no Kitarō, Brave Story) as the titled hero, Sho Aikawa (Tokyo Zombie, Zebraman) as mentor...

Symbiotically combining still and motion pictures captured on the Canon 5D (yes, we know: "They shot an episode of 'House' with that camera"), "Frog in the Well" boasts a folkloric essence for its serene tale of a young man journeying in his native Japan to distribute his mother's ashes around the country she adored. In the process, he comes out of his shell and discovers the beauty of his homeland, and finds his own passion for the world beyond his tiny Tokyo apartment.
The emotional journey captured by Ken Ochiai is quietly successful, achieving a resonance received by the audience with appreciative clarity. Additionally, its function as a travel journal of some of Japan's most beautiful elements, natural and man-made, cannot be denied.

It’s no secret that hundreds of filmmakers, actors and cinema enthusiasts have been inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s films over the years. With March 23rd representing the 100th Anniversary of his birth, the master of cinema is as influential today as he ever was. Established greats such as Martin Scorsese credit Kurosawa as being a major influence in their life’s work. In a recent interview, Scorsese couldn’t stress enough the importance of Kurosawa, “Let me say it simply, Kurosawa was my Master.”
To celebrate Kurosawa’s 100th Anniversary, the Green Planet Movie Awards has managed to pull in two of Japan’s top directors Shinya Tsukamoto and Hitoshi Iwamoto for the March 23rd event to attend in person an open screening of Kurosawa’s most famous and influential picture “Seven Samurai.” “To be able to screen one of Kurosawa’s and indeed the world cinema’s greatest films to the public,...

The 8th Samurai has been making the rounds on the film festival circuit and has managed to garner several awards along the way including the "Best of Fest" Award at the La Shorts Fest. The talented NY filmmaker, and AFI graduate, has been involved with an impressive range of productions in the past; from George Clooney's solid but little known faux-reality series "Unscripted", to Scorsese's "The Departed" (to name a few stand-out titles). Regardless of the roll he played on those sets, his ambition has always been to write and direct. Clearly, he's off to a strong start. As you may have gathered from the title,...
