Before spearheading projects in the DC Universe, James Gunn showcased his distinctive storytelling prowess in the MCU with the Guardians of the Galaxy film series. Starting with the 2014 movie, the filmmaker brought cosmic superheroes to life on the big screen, gradually captivating audiences with their narratives while maintaining a sense of intrigue and blending humor, with a diverse cast of characters.

However, the Guardians of the Galaxy threequel became his last venture in the MCU, as he transitioned to a leading role in the DC Universe. Actor and recent Oscar-winner Robert Downey Jr. is known for his decade-long role as Iron Man in the MCU. The actor laid the foundations for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, alongside director Jon Favreau and producer Kevin Feige. The film is largely credited with having changed how superhero films were perceived in Hollywood.
Downey Jr.’s off-screen persona often includes a self-aware yet inflated sense of ego. However, even he set it aside to name James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy as the best film in the franchise. The Oppenheimer star mentioned how he was surprised by how great the film was, with relatively unknown characters, and ended up being so important for the MCU.

The premise of "Captain Marvel" was borne out of unique, if limiting, circumstances. The film was the 21st entry in Marvel's Cinematic Universe, and the first to put a female hero center stage. Perhaps more than any MCU film that'd preceded it, "Captain Marvel" had a complicated brief to adhere to. It was introducing one of the most prolific heroes in Marvel history at a veritable late point in the franchise, just before "Avengers: Endgame" brought about the end of the Infinity Saga. "Captain Marvel" also needed to establish the title heroine as someone with a history, all while avoiding a decades' worth of continuity concerns.
Where had Carol Danvers been while the Avengers defended an alien attack, or assembled against Thanos in "Infinity War"? "Captain Marvel" had a bevy of questions to answer — or, more accurately, to avoid — and according to insider book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios,...

The screenplay to the 2014 mega-hit "Guardians of the Galaxy," the 10th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was credited to director James Gunn and longtime Hollywood screenwriter Nicole Perlman. Perlman also has story credits on the films "Captain Marvel" and "Pokémon Detective Pikachu," and has previously been attached to a sequel to the 1986 Jim Henson film "Labyrinth," as well as film adaptations of the 1980s toy properties "Visionaries" and "M.A.S.K."
Perlman, according to an old article on the Marvel website, was recruited into the Marvel writing room way back in 2009 and was offered the opportunity to write a spec script for a "lesser" Marvel property as a test of her style and working capabilities. She selected "Guardians of the Galaxy," a Marvel title that had been rebooted by authors Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning the year before. Perlman said to her interviewer that this was a common...

Looking back, it's no wonder "Labyrinth" bombed at the box office. The last feature film directed by the late, great Jim Henson is just too inspiredly bizarre to have ever stood a chance of catching on with a mainstream audience right away, much less at the height of the Reagan era when it originally came out in 1986. It took many years of young people singing along to "Magic Dance" during slumber parties and coming to recognize their own sexual awakening right along with the then-teenaged Jennifer Connelly as Sarah for the film to become the cult classic it is today.
Indeed, dark, twisted, and occasionally sensual fantasy films that struggle to catch on with the masses before finding a niche audience were very much Henson's bag in the '80s. His and Frank Oz's 1982 feature film "The Dark Crystal" was also a financial dud that enjoyed a long...

"Guardians of the Galaxy", "Captain Marvel" writer Nicole Perlman, with "Watchmen" TV series director Nicole Kassell will team for a feature, inspired by the Greek legend of "Medusa", one of three monstrous 'Gorgons', described as winged human females with living venomous snakes in place of hair:
"...those who gazed into her eyes would turn to stone. In classical antiquity, the image of the head of 'Medusa' appeared in the evil-averting device known as the 'Gorgoneion', with the new feature focusing on the more monstrous qualities of the creature, leading audiences to wonder if the project will take place in ancient times or if it will be a modern reinvention of the concept."
According to producers "'Medusa' reimagines what audiences may know about everybody's favorite 'Gorgon', who has snakes for hair and whose stare turns ordinary people into stone.

When "Guardians of the Galaxy" first hit theaters in 2014, it was a surprising and massive success for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead of showing audiences familiar faces in a post "The Avengers" super-powered New York City, "Guardians" offered a delightfully weird, grungy, and colorful space opera that tapped into something new. Once deemed "the riskiest Marvel film since 'Iron Man,'" it turned Chris Pratt from supporting funnyman to Hollywood leading man, gave Zoe Saldaña yet another prolific sci-fi role, and its '70s needle drops led to one of the best-selling movie soundtracks in history.
Most notably, however, the "Guardians" franchise transformed James Gunn's career from indie director to one of the most important figures in the comic book movie industry to date. After a conservative smear-campaign in 2018, Gunn was famously fired from directing "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" in a reactive move from Disney corporate.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" revolutionized the art of the modern movie needle drop. While James Gunn's meticulously curated soundtracks have taken on lives of their own outside of his films, the Awesome Mixtapes he's crafted for the "Guardians" trilogy are in a league all their own. Each song serves a narrative purpose, whether it be furthering the arc of main man Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), reinforcing his romance with Gamora (Zoe Saldana), or cementing a bond with the Guardians on the whole. Some songs, of course, just add a heightened cool factor to a splashy sci-fi action — but the music is clearly important to Gunn. It's why so much of the music in "Guardians of the Galaxy" feels like a natural extension of the narrative: most of Gunn's needle drops were written into the script before production even began.

No idea or character is too old for Hollywood to recycle. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Amazon Studios will be developing a new film based on Medusa, one of the most famous monsters of Greek mythology. One of three sisters known as the Gorgons, Medusa is famous for her hair made of snakes and piercing gaze: anyone who looks her in the eyes turns to stone.
Described as a "modern take" on the character, it seems the film will ditch ancient Greece for a more contemporary setting. "Medusa" will be an action-adventure movie, with the titular character as the unlikely hero. With the movie so early in pre-production, there's no word on who will be the star; the makers probably don't even know yet. However, THR was able to share who some of the talent working behind the scenes are.

Amazon Studios is hoping to avoid turning to stone as they stare into the eyes of Medusa, with THR reporting that Amazon Studios is developing a film based on the Greek myth.

THR adds, “Nicole Perlman, known for her Marvel Studios work, penned the script that reimagines what audiences may know about everybody’s favorite Gorgon, who has snakes for hair and whose stare turns ordinary people into stone.”

We’ve been hearing a lot about the Greek mythological character Medusa lately, and there’s not even a new Clash of the Titans movie on the way. There was a Medusa horror movie that recently got a sequel called Medusa’s Venom, there was a Brazilian production that Music Box Films brought to North America, and there was a Medusa-inspired film in the works at Fangoria Studios, a project we haven’t heard about since it was announced over a year ago. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Nicole Kassell, who an Emmy for her work directing episodes of HBO’s Watchmen series, will be directing a Medusa movie for Amazon Studios.
Nicole Perlman, whose writing credits include Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel, plus Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, has written the screenplay for Medusa. There aren’t many story details available at this time,...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is well known for being a highly collaborative environment, but Kevin Feige has always been the main creative driving force behind the scenes, and the actors themselves aren’t particularly involved in the development of the movies they appear in. In fact, Paul Rudd is the only star to have been given a writing credit in the franchise to date, and even then he was just one of four scribes on Ant-Man and five on the sequel.
That might lead to some issues on Deadpool 3, seeing as Ryan Reynolds was personally responsible for dragging the first film out of a dozen years stuck in development hell. The 44 year-old also produced and co-wrote the two Fox blockbusters as well as playing the lead role, and you’d imagine that he wouldn’t want to give up those responsibilities when it comes to the third installment.

1986’s Labyrinth flopped on its original release and made back just half its budget. It also received very mixed reviews from critics, with Gene Siskel calling it “awful” with a “pathetic story” and Roger Ebert saying it “never really comes alive.” But ever since its premiere, the film has gradually increased in stature, becoming a hit on home video and later, DVD. Now, it’s a bona fide cult classic and Labyrinth 2 is on its way.

Film Independent, the organization behind the Spirit Awards and Los Angeles Film Festival, has unveiled the six fellows chosen for its annual Directing Lab, a program designed to support emerging independent film directors in prep on their feature films. See the list below.
In a big change caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 Lab will be a two-part program: a two-week lab taking place virtually from May 4-15, followed by a three-day workshop to be held in Los Angeles later this year. In previous years, it was an eight-week program.
Directing Lab fellows receive script feedback, discuss their visions and select short scenes from their screenplays to workshop. Each director then casts actors and rehearses their scenes in the Lab before undertaking a mini-production.
This year’s creative advisers and guest speakers include Daniel Barnz, Alex O’Flinn, Susanna Fogel, Sheila Hanahan Taylor, Karyn Kusama, Wyatt Garfield, Lisa Robertson and Chloé Zhao.

Does Luca Guadagnino ever sleep? The Italian filmmaker released back-to-back arthouse favorites “Call Me by Your Name” and “Suspiria” in 2017 and 2018, launched the short film “The Staggering Girl” at Cannes in 2019, and he’s also working on an adaptation of William Golding’s AP English staple, “Lord of the Flies.” That’s not to mention his miniseries “We Are Who We Are” in the works, plus a sequel to “Call Me By Your Name,” and a long-rumored big-screen imagining of Bob Dylan’s iconic breakup album, “Blood on the Tracks.”
In the latest news on the front of “Lord of the Flies,” which Guadagnino is set up to direct for Warner Bros., the film has landed young-adult novelist and “A Monster Calls” scribe Patrick Ness as the screenwriter. There were previously talks of a gender-bent production, swapping in a group of school girls for the boys in the 1954 novel who,...

On the heels of 2019’s “The Lion King,” another Disney animated classic is getting the live-action treatment as “Bambi” has landed the writers behind “Captain Marvel” and “Chaos Walking.”
Disney has hired Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer to write the script for the live-action remake of the 1942 animated classic.
Depth of Field (“The Farewell”), the production banner run by Chris and Paul Weitz and Andrew Miano, will produce the live action remake.
The original coming of age animated classic centered on a young deer named Bambi who joins his new friends, a rabbit named Thumper and a skunk named Flower, in exploring his forest home. As Bambi grows up, he learns that there is tragedy as well as beauty and joy in his forest world and on the path to adulthood. The film received three Oscar nominations — best song, best score and best sound.

Disney and Marvel have officially begun development on the hotly anticipated “Captain Marvel” follow-up. The 2019 blockbuster starred Brie Larson as ex-u.S. airforce fighter pilot Carol Danvers in the McU’s first solo female superhero movie. “Captain Marvel” earned the studio over one billion dollars in profit worldwide, proving that women can lead major box office successes. According to Deadline, Marvel is eyeing a 2022 release for the sequel, tentatively known as “Captain Marvel 2.”
Marvel has tapped relatively unknown writer Megan McDonnell to pen the screenplay. McDonnell’s only previous credit is the forthcoming Disney+ series “WandaVision,” a brand new McU series starring Paul Bettany, Kat Dennings, Kathryn Hahn, and Marvel regular Elizabeth Olsen.

The most powerful superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is officially ramping up for her big-screen encore. Disney’s Marvel Studios has officially begun production on the sequel to Captain Marvel (2019), the billion-dollar hit that energized and expanded the hitmaker studio’s young female constituency.
Brie Larson will return as the intrepid Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, a former military pilot who taps into cosmic energies that make her a powerhouse champion for Earth when interplanetary dangers threaten the fragile globe. Larson’s no-nonsense hero also packed a wallop at the box office, with $1.13 billion in global box office.
A Marvel source says that Megan McDonnell, part of the writing team for the upcoming Disney+ McU series WandaVision, is in advanced negotiations to chart the course for Captain Marvel’s second cinematic solo flight. The original film was the 22nd Marvel Studios film, but the first with a female hero as the lead title character.

It’s October, which means deliciously dark Halloween-themed programming is heading every TV channel and streaming platform. For Hulu, that means major premieres of festival hits like “Little Monsters,” starring Lupita Nyong’o and “Wounds,” featuring Armie Hammer, Dakota Johnson, and Zazie Beetz. The streamer is also premiering thrilling fare from its Originals slate, including new seasons of its popular series “Castle Rock,” “Light as a Feather,” and “Into the Dark,” and will also highlight Halloween episodes from its immense catalog of TV sitcoms throughout the month. Most important for indie filmmakers, however, it Hulu’s annual Halloween film contest, known as the Huluween Film Fest.

Oscar-nominated “Call Me By Your Name” and “Suspiria” director Luca Guadagnino is in negotiations to direct a new adaptation of William Golding’s classic coming-of-age novel for Warner Bros. According to Variety, Warners has been trying to mount the project since reacquiring the rights in 2017.
There have previously been talks of a gender-bent production, swapping in a group of school girls for the boys in the novel who, marooned on a desert island, unravel into savagery and madness. According to other sources, the screenplay will come from Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet — scribes behind such recent action tentpoles including “Captain Marvel,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and “Tomb Raider.”

Cast your mind back to April 2016, when Marvel Studios was still teasing the idea of a standalone Captain Marvel movie, and you’ll no doubt remember the moment when Kevin Feige confirmed changes to the origin story of Carol Danvers.
At the time, the Powers That Be felt Carol’s comic book origin story was too similar to that belonging to DC’s Green Lantern, and so Meg LeFauve and Guardians screenwriter Nicole Perlman were tasked with creating something new – something unique. The resulting narrative would go on to form the foundations of Captain Marvel’s cinematic debut, but its roots can be traced back to Kelly Sue DeConnick, a comic book scribe who knows a thing or two about what makes Carol tick.
Turns out she actually pitched something totally different for “In Pursuit of Flight,” which Marvel ultimately rejected. But as DeConnick and Mary Livanos, director of production and development for Marvel Studios,...

The long-running “Fast and Furious” franchise has never lacked powerful female characters onscreen, from Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty to Gal Gadot’s Gisele, but it has struggled to be as representative behind the camera. No woman has ever directed a “Fast and Furious” movie, nor has a female screenwriter ever worked on a “Fast and Furious” script. Fortunately that’s about to change, and it’s all thanks to Michelle Rodriguez.
According to Bloomberg, Rodriguez has officially signed on to reprise her role of Leticia “Letty” Ortiz in “Fast & Furious 9.” The deal was made after Rodriguez secured an agreement to have a female screenwriter join the production. The actress made headlines in June 2017 for an Instagram post in which she threatened to leave the franchise unless producers showed “some love to the women of the franchise on the next one.”

It’s almost shocking that nobody made a live-action Pokémon movie considering the card game’s heyday was back in the 1990s while the anime and video games still ruled kids’ televisions. That’s not to say the property ever disappeared. Nintendo couldn’t have turned “Pokémon Go” into an international smartphone phenomenon without strong brand recognition spanning multiple generations. But what was there to lean on narratively? The creatures themselves can’t say anything but their names and the human characters are kids trying to catch them in the wild to then battle a la the cards. While you could get away with something as simple as that, there wouldn’t be the type of lasting power necessary for box office glory. For that you would need a hook—something Detective Pikachu provides.

Universal Pictures has seen a ton of success from the Fast and Furious franchise and I don’t see any signs of it slowing down anytime soon. The Hobbs & Shaw spinoff film is the next movie in the franchise to be released. That will be followed by Fast and Furious 9, and after that there is going to be a female-led spinoff movie.
Thanks to THR, we have some new details to share with you regarding that all-female spinoff movie. According to them, they are looking to get her back to reprise her role of Cipher from The Fate of the Furious. Apparently, the story for the film is going to revolve around her.

The central premise of the Pokémon franchise — which ranges from card games to video games, manga to music, and the popular Pokémon Go smart phone game — is relatively simple: Imagine a world in which there are hundreds of species of mostly cute “pocket monsters,” all of whom humans have trained to battle each other in scary, but not particularly brutal matches. But in the brand’s first live-action feature, that premise is the first thing to go. In “Pokémon: Detective Pikachu,” director Rob Letterman imagines a world in which people and Pokémon live together in harmony, a place without ‘mon-on-‘mon cage matches, a cute utopia that harbors plenty of nasty secrets.
It’s not the worst idea, and the CGI that enliven this wild world of people and Pokémon is nothing short of awe-inspiring. But no amount of technical polish can detract from a thin narrative that confuses far more than it amuses.
