Jen — you are stuck in a rut!
You have now made at least 8 romantic comedies in which you are repeatedly “Rachel” and now you Must move on!
In your latest film, The Switch, which opened today, you are Rachel but a little older and wearier, and your co-star, Jason Bateman, plays the Ross character, who you can’t quite get it together with.
In this version, your character is New York City career girl Kassie who magically lands dream jobs, without any effort, working in the world of TV. Your best friend is Wally (Jason Bateman), one of the few New York hedge fund honchos who doesn’t appear to make any more money than a high school teacher — which is exactly what he dresses like.
As Kassie, you decide your biological clock is ticking, and since you haven’t found the man of your dreams — despite the fact that...

Jen is being called boring, forgettable, and a wannabe in reviews for her new film ‘The Switch!’ Even her 10-year-old son is a better actor say some!
It looks like Jennifer Aniston’s new film The Switch is Definitely not going to do as well as Angelina Jolie’s Salt — the reviews are horrible! The Boston Globe says, “movies never had a star as depressing as Aniston” and the New York Times calls her boring, bland, and a “walking vanilla milkshake!” Even her 10-year-old costar and movie son Bryce Robinson is a better actor says Time Out New York!
It doesn’t stop there either! USA Today says Jen keeps picking, “forgettable roles in forgettable movies” and points out Jennifer Lopez already did this same role earlier this year in The Backup Plan!
Hopefully Jen can sell this movie with her charm and round of media promotions, because if the...

With a dizzying all star cast, the imaginatively named Valentine’s Day, explores the loves, trials and losses of Los Angeles couples and singles facing the pressures and expectations of Valentine’s Day. Chicago – Clearly conceived as something like an American version of “Love Actually,” Garry Marshall’s “Valentine’s Day” is an unqualified disaster, a film that’s only interesting in that it may hold the record for the most household names sucked into one horrible film.
Blu-Ray Rating: 1.5/5.0
“Valentine’s Day” might have worked as a Robert Altman-esque ensemble piece about the pitfalls of modern love in 2010 Los Angeles or as a truly cheesy and ridiculous romantic comedy that virtually winks at you through its own candy coating. Sadly, the film is neither. Marshall neither goes for the romantic gusto nor the character-driven realism, ending with something in the boring middle: a film that’s not funny, romantic, nor realistic. I would compare it to a bad sitcom or made-for-cable movie but most of those are more tolerable.

***This review discusses some of the plot points in Valentine's Day.***
When someone looks at a poster or sees a trailer for some celeb-packed movie, he or she will almost invariably think, “Well, with a cast like that, how bad could it be?”
The new answer to that hypothetical question? “As bad as Valentine’s Day.”
Schlock-meister Garry Marshall — who once referred to his films, with no irony whatsoever, as “warmedies” — has given us an ensemble piece that contains fewer laughs than it has Oscar winners. I had always thought of Love Actually, this movie’s obvious antecedent, as a pleasant diversion, but next to Valentine’s Day, it’s a cerebral epic on par with Robert Altman’s Nashville.
The upside of movies with a patchwork quilt of characters is that if you don’t like who’s currently on screen, there’s just a short wait until they cut to someone else.

As a male film critic, even one who considers himself a fan of the genre, I know to maintain reasonable expectations when I'm watching most mainstream romantic comedies. Generally speaking, they're usually about simplistic conflicts, one-dimensional characters and common-denominator wish-fulfillment, and there's nothing wrong with that. But even acknowledging this, I nevertheless hold them to a minimal standard - namely, that the behavior on display is the sort that actual people would exhibit in real life. And sadly, Valentine's Day violates this perfectly reasonable rule. Instead, Garry Marshall's romantic comedy delivers plenty of wish fulfillment without managing to offer anything remotely fulfilling.
Ashton Kutcher (What Happens In Vegas) plays Reed, an overzealous florist who proposes to his girlfriend Morley (Jessica Alba) on Valentine's Day. It's his business, and his story, that forms the throughline for the other relationships in the film, each of which is lumbering towards its own...

Despite having a running time of 121 minutes, Valentine's Day felt like Valentine's weekend. Who knew writer Katherine Fugate and director Garry Marshall could make a simple romantic-comedy feel like an epic trilogy. This flick does have a few things going for it, but one will get the sense that this should've been wrapped up a long time ago.
So this flick has a huge cast of well-known stars. A few of their respective characters are worth having on screen. Most of them are not. With a script such as this one, eventually all the characters have an indirect connection to one-another. Whether they know it or not. The obstacle the movie faces is that everything is chopped up. Therefore, the audience won't really care about most of the characters.
The gist of the story is that it's Valentine's Day, and we are introduced to numerous couples...

Everyone could use a little fluff in their lives now and again, even hardened, cynical, no-nonsense movie critics who have had it up to here with chintzy romcoms. Â Okay, maybe especially us, the kind of people who would normally find a certain level of loathing in a film like Valentine’S Day. Â It’s bloated. Â It’s lacking any kind of edge whatsoever. Â It’s filled to the brim with fake, Hollywood types falling in and out of love as if it doesn’t even mean anything to do so any more. Â It’s the type of film I generally hate, gnashing my teeth at the thought of standing one more minute with any of these characters. Â Imagine my shock and disbelief when, early in the film, I found myself not only enjoying myself but fully engrossed in most of the characters splashed on the screen.

Looking for a rom-com fix this Valentine's weekend? Rather than fall for the calculated come-on of "Valentine's Day," you might want to revisit some much better films instead. For example:
» "Jerry Maguire"
» "Moonstruck"
» "Knocked Up"
» "House of 1000 Corpses"
Okay, I exaggerate. "Valentine's Day" does have a few good lines, and a couple of lively performances. But the movie is overstuffed with plot and characters; they're confusing to keep up with, and not all that interesting even when you're able to figure them out.
The story takes place on ... well, you know what day it takes place on. Ashton Kutcher is a love-struck Los Angeles florist who's just proposed to his sleep-over girlfriend, Jessica Alba. "I can be a sappy moron all day," he crows, with unwarranted presumption,...

They say that Christmas is the most depressing day of the year, because people who look upon Christmas as a day for homecoming fellowship expect so much, and the holiday does not meet their expectations. A good case can be made that Valentine's Day is even less appealing, given that this is a holiday that venerates people in love, while obviously not everyone can be as ecstatic as the Hallmark people tell us we should be. Garry Marshall looks into that one day in February, and who could be a better choice for directing a love tale than the fellow whose métier includes "Pretty Woman," "Frankie & Johnny," and "The Flamingo Kid?"

Truth be told, I was not looking forward to seeing "Valentine's Day." I'm not a big romantic-comedy fan, nor do I like big, ensemble cast in films -- I've always thought they're just merely gimmicks.
Well, gimmick or not, I fell in love with the cast of "Valentine's Day." Some actors were stronger than others, of course, but everyone pulled their weight.
Sure, director Garry Marshall has made soft and fluffy films like "Beaches," "Pretty Woman, both "Princess Diaries" movies, but at least he knows how to balance the romantic with the comedy.
I suspect moviegoers will enjoy "Valentine's Day." There are some predictable subplots (but nowadays, predictability and romantic comedy pretty much go hand-in-hand) and don't expect too much character development (it's hard to develop a character when you have 20 other characters to nurture).
But I guarantee you -- "Valentine's Day" will make you feel good!
