There are some years where the TV trends are so obvious, it’s hard to ignore. And this year, one looms over all: The evolution of true crime, once the bastion of news magazines and cheesy made-for-tv movies of the week, into prestige television. That has been true for a while in the documentary space, but the sheer number of ripped-from-the-headlines tales taking over the scripted world is truly astounding.
And not all of them are tales of real-life death or murder (attempted or accomplished) — although plenty of them are, including “The Staircase,” “Candy,” “The Thing About Pam,” “Joe vs. Carole,” “The Girl From Plainville” and the aptly named “Dr. Death.” But what really stands out in this year’s glut of true crime are the depictions of wealthy scoundrels trying to get away with their own corporate malfeasance (while harming others in the process).
The list is weighty: There...

Megyn Kelly’s time on Fox News and NBC came to an end some time ago, but she continues to find ways to stay in the game.
The former TV anchor, best known for her tenure on the Fox News Channel primetime schedule and a chaotic period at NBC News, will launch a new weekday talk program on satellite-radio broadcaster SiriusXM, starting Sept. 7. “The Megyn Kelly Show” will air weekdays between noon and 2 p.m. eastern on the outlet’s “Triumph” channel, which is devoted to programming that offers advice and inspiration. Other Triumph hosts include Nancy Grace, Dave Ramsey, Dr. Laura Schlessinger and Glenn Beck.
Kelly has since September of last year focused on a podcast, produced by Red Seat Ventures, a company led by Christopher Balfe — former CEO of TheBlaze and president of Glenn Beck’s production company Mercury Radio Arts and Kevin Balfe, a former senior vice president at Mercury Radio Arts.

Megyn Kelly isn’t on a mainstream news outlet at present, but that isn’t going to keep her from broadcasting.
The former NBC News and Fox News Channel anchor confirmed Thursday what many media-industry observers have long suspected: She’s going the independent route.
Kelly will launch Devil May Care Media, a production company that will back podcasts and other shows built around the latest news, current events, legal and cultural issues. The shows will contain “the same tough, fair, smart perspective” that Kelly burnished during her heyday as a primetime anchor on Fox News and a morning anchor on NBC. Her first project: A new podcast, “The Megyn Kelly Show,” that is expected to debut the week of September 28.
“With Devil May Care Media, I answer only to my audience and my conscience. Those who like what I have to say will find the experience deeply rewarding. Those...

True crime media is shifting toward advocacy. The hosts of My Favorite Murder urge listeners to donate to End the Backlog, a nonprofit demanding the timely testing of rape kits by law enforcement, and Ashley Flowers from Crime Junkie is on the board of directors for Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana. The Murder Squad was designed specifically to put fans to work solving cold cases. Likewise, CrimeCon, happening June 7th through 9th in New Orleans, isn’t some macabre horrorfest where people dress up like Pogo the clown — in fact,...
