For years we’ve been hearing that writer/director Joe Cornish and actor John Boyega have been talking about making a sequel to their 2011 alien invasion film Attack the Block (watch it Here). The project was officially announced last year – and now Boyega has revealed to the folks at Collider that he and Cornish have been crafting the story for Attack the Block 2 together.
Boyega said,
The story has actually been presented by myself and Joe Cornish. We’ve collaborated heavily on making a story that makes sense for Moses and the other characters, and the new characters that will be coming up in the sequel too. And then, also, there’s different perspectives in writing it, with Joe having his perspective and me having mine. London has changed so much, in so many different ways, over the years since the first movie. We’re just trying to make...

Megaton Entertainment, an indie distribution and film sales firm, has picked up a pair of titles from Hong Kong production entities Amm Entertainment and Phoenix Waters. It is launching them at the American Film Market (AFM) this week.
Megaton is pre-selling “Chungking Mansions,” which it bills as the biggest zombie film in Hong Kong cinema history, and also as “ ’The Raid’ with zombies.” Directed by banker turned producer and director Bizhan Tong (“The Escort”), the film tracks a diverse group of people who, following a zombie attack, try to break into Chungking Mansions.
The building was made famous in Wong Kar-wai’s Chungking Express and is possibly the richest cultural melting pot in the predominantly Chinese city. Wong is reputed to have called it a “mass-populated and hyperactive place.”
Currently in pre-production, the film is set to employ a suitably diverse cast including: Japan’s Rina Takeda (“Attack on Titan...

Asia Television, previously Hong Kong’s number two free-to-air broadcaster, may no longer be visible on local TV screens. But the ex-broadcaster is now being recast as a content studio, with its new offshoot Amm Global leading the charge.
The division is headed by Bizhan Tong, a Chinese-British former banker turned filmmaker (“The Escort”). He joined the company after directing “Lockdown,” a U.K.-Hong Kong co-venture film produced and co-financed by Tong’s Phoenix Waters Productions, Hong Kong asset management firm Yg Capital, and Amm Global. International sales are handled jointly by Amm Global and US firm OneTwoThree.
The movie, being launched at FilMart, is a pandemic-era thriller in which an actor must keep passing devious tests set by a casting director in order to keep the people around him alive. As events escalate and more people are trapped the actor must confront his past, overcome his present, and...

‘If you are the big tree, we are the small axe’
Made famous by Bob Marley and the Wailers’ 1973 song ‘Small Axe’, that’s the traditional proverb behind the title for a five-film series by Oscar-winning British director Steve McQueen.
Two of McQueen’s Small Axe films were selected for this year’s Cannes Film Festival and in October, one opened the 64th London Film Festival. Now, all five are coming straight to BBC One and iPlayer in the UK, and Amazon Prime Video around the world. The home release has nothing to do with the pandemic; it was always the plan for these feature-length films with a cast including Star Wars’ John Boyega and Black Panther’s Letitia Wright, to air for a mainstream audience on prime time UK television.

U.K. broadcaster BBC One has released a punchy trailer for “Mangrove,” one of five films from the “Small Axe” anthology by Oscar and BAFTA winner Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”).
Aug. 9 marks the 50th anniversary of the day in 1970 when 150 protesters of West Indian, African and South Asian heritage in Notting Hill, West London, marched to local police stations in protest of police harassment in their communities, including the Mangrove restaurant. Nine protest leaders were arrested and charged with incitement to riot: Frank Crichlow, Darcus Howe, Altheia Jones-LeCointe, Barbara Beese, Rupert Boyce, Rhodan Gordon, Anthony Innis, Rothwell Kentish and Godfrey Millett. The group later became known as the ‘Mangrove 9.’
“It was a march necessitated by relentless police brutality in Notting Hill,” said McQueen. “To commemorate the bravery of these community activists and the nine who went on to be acquitted of incitement to riot with the judge citing ‘evidence of racial hatred,...

New BFI research reaffirms alarming diversity trends.
Research conducted by the British Film Institute (BFI) has revealed that 59% of UK films over the last 10 years featured no black actors in a named role.
Only 13% of UK films feature a black actor in a leading role, and 50% of those parts were found in just 47 films, which is less than 5% of the overall total of films surveyed (1,172).
The research was revealed at this morning’s [Oct 6] Black Star Symposium at the BFI London Film Festival (Oct 5-16).
BFI creative director and Lff chief Heather Stewart commented that “diversity is one of the biggest issues facing film” and that the new research clearly indicated that “the number of lead roles for black actors has not really changed over ten years”.
Further findings from the research include that there are only four black actors in the list of the 100 most prolific actors in the UK – Noel Clarke, Nonso Anozie, [link...

If you seek out Dom Hemingway (as you should) for a chance to see Jude Law as never before, you’ll likely come away thrilled with what writer-director Richard Shepard has unleashed within the actor. He’s on fire. Physically, Law’s almost unrecognizable, complete with greased-back hair, a protruding belly and a feral glint of sexual hunger in his eyes. And as an actor, he’s louder, bolder, nuttier and more rakishly appealing than ever before. It’s quite a transformation, coming on the heels of many almost clinically detached performances over the past few years – and Dom Hemingway should mark the beginning of a new era for the star, as Mud did for McConaughey. He’s so stunningly good, so fiercely alive, in this role that one can almost feel the heat from his fire coming off every frame.
Thanks to Law and to Shepard, who proves himself...

The tale of Dom Hemingway (Jude Law) is a vibrant, loud, transparent mix of character study and black comedy. Dom Hemingway tells the story of Dom, a convict who has spent twelve years in prison for keeping his mouth closed regarding a job he did for crime boss Mr. Fontaine (Demian Bichir). After he is released from prison (in an opening that resembles a Quentin Tarantino film; full of quick dialogue, a grand entrance, vibrant colors, and a punchy song in the background), Dom spends the rest of the film trying to regain what he feels he is rightfully owed.
Although the film began with a promisingly funny segment of Dom comparing his junk to Renior and Picasso, most aspects of Dom Hemingway baffled me. From the odd change in pace of the script to the title cards, I was dumbfounded. Dom Hemingway, as a character, does not have much of an arc.

Vacant Domicile: Shepard’s Latest Hides Absence of Narrative Behind Titular Character
As foul mouthed and over-the-top as it sometimes tends to be, Richard Sheperd’s latest, Dom Hemingway falls a bit short absurd glory, considering the balls out bravado it promises prior to the opening credits. While it features perhaps one of the best performances of Jude Law’s career, its raunchy energy fizzles out by the mid-point as it switches gears from uneasy gangster flick to family dramedy. That’s not say it isn’t without merit, as even though the plot can’t get it together, Shepherd’s got a knack for engaging dialogue and entertaining characterization, something the film tends to bank on a bit too broadly.
Loud, onerous and with a tendency to spew curse word laden diatribes like an acolyte of Tom Hardy’s Bronson character, Dom Hemingway (Law) has just been released from...

Here is a new trailer [here was the first] for Richard Shepard’s (The Matador) Dom Hemingway starring Jude Law. It’s a green-band trailer so it’s not showing you the outrageous stuff which you can check out below in the red-band trailer. Law is released from prison and goes to get the hush money he’s owed but things don’t always go according to plan as he very well knows by now right? For the GoT fans out there, Emilia Clarke also stars in the flick!
Jude Law plays Dom Hemingway, a larger-than-life safecracker with a loose fuse who is funny, profane, and dangerous. This is the Pure Movies review of Dom Hemingway, directed by Richard Shepard and starring Jude Law, Richard E. Grant, Demian Bichir, Emilia Clarke, Jumayn Hunter and Madalina Diana Ghenea. Written by Gabriella Apicella for Pure Movies. Jude Law’s vicious, eloquent, explicit, uninhibited and revoltingly arrogant rant at the opening of Dom Hemingway encapsulates much of what is enacted over the subsequent 100 minutes. While Law’s sophisticated foppishness re-fashioned into the dated three-piece suit of a loud-mouthed potbellied cockney hardman is almost hypnotically captivating for the first 15 minutes, these incongruities with the normally suave actor cannot carry attention alone.

I had a really good time with Dom Hemingway at the Toronto Film Festival this year, opening my review saying it "feels like a second cousin to Nicolas Winding-Refn's Bronson. Albeit it's not as good (how could it bec), but Jude Law's title character carries the same gruff, deep British accent Tom Hardy adopted for Bronson and the batsh*t nature of the two characters is damn near exactly the same." You get a small taste of what the film has to offer in this first trailer for the movie's upcoming November 2013 UK release, but the film is laced with so much profanity and filthy behavior there is no way to create a trailer that isn't R-rated and give you an idea of exactly what's in store. In fact, the trailer sells it as a film revolving around Dom's money being stolen. I guess, you could say that's what the story is about,...

Albeit it's not as good (how could it bec), but Jude Law's title character carries the same gruff, deep British accent Tom Hardy adopted for Bronson and the batsh*t nature of the two characters is damn near exactly the same. Suffice to say, I quite enjoyed it. The film opens as Law stands shirtless in front of the camera. We can see him from the waist up, his arms out-stretched to either side as he screams at the audience about the glorious nature of his "cheetah cock", comparing it to the work of Renoir and Picasso and suggesting it should be on display in museums. This goes on for what seems like five minutes or so, one punchline after the next, establishing exactly what kind of film we're in for as the word "f**k" must...

Just figuring out my schedule this year was a chore as the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival organizers certainly didn't make it easy on us. Loaded with conflicts, I've had to make two sacrifices at this year's festival in that I won't be seeing Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom of Parkland due to scheduling conflicts and one film simply has to be chosen over another. However, as I've already seen two of the films playing at the festival in Rush and Kill Your Darlings -- reviews will be posted based on the film's first screenings in Toronto -- I was able to open up my schedule a little following my first, preliminary schedule. Earlier today I posted my new schedule, which currently includes 27 films with a few gaps here and there where other films may fit in, or I may simply be able to catch up on reviews. Either way, I...

Having made a slew of short films in recent years, and collaborated with Noah and the Whale on the immaculate The First Days of Spring, Parkville Pictures have recently been working with debut writer-director Jules Bishop on their first feature, Borrowed Time.
The film had an eighteen-day production back in the summer of 2011, with the help of Film London and the BBC Films Microwave scheme, shot for £120,000.
Fast forward a year, and the film had finally been completed, and now it’s ready for distribution. The path to distribution is of course an incredibly difficult one, especially for independent films like this one, and so Parkville have decided to become their own distributors, and raise the money for the task through Kickstarter.

For every horror film that’s released a year, few are actually noteworthy, while most settle for being so-bad-it’s-good (or bad) schlock. Image Entertainment will release Paul Andrew Williams' (The Cottage) Cherry Tree Lane in North America. The release date is January 29th. This film deals with a hostage taking. Several hoods hold a family captive and no one is willing to explain why. This title has received moderate reviews. Screenjabber says of the film's story: "the story is so clichéd it’s extremely hard to care." Originality seems lacking in the premise. As well, UK Screen talks of the challenges of indie filmmaking: "[Williams] makes another impressive effort to make the most of a clearly low budget." So, the reception for the film has been a mixed bag as seen in these two snippets. Other reviews have been equally ambivalent. Fans of hoodie horror or thrillers can have a look at the film's North American trailer below and the film's poster above. Release Date: January 29th, 2013 (DVD). Director: Paul Andrew Williams.

And just like that, "Dom Hemingway" has rounded out its cast to join Jude Law and "Withnail & I" star Richard E. Grant, and is headed in front of cameras as planned. First announced this spring around the Cannes Film Festival, the ratio of projects unveiled to those actually having a chance to get made is probably a 50/50 shot, but lo and behold, this one is sticking to the plan. From "The Matador" writer and director Richard Shepard, the film will find Law playing the title character, a larger-than-life ex-con safecracker who sets out with his best friend (Grant) to pick up his payment for keeping his mouth shut for twelve years in prison. Demian Bichir, "Game Of Thrones" star Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen on the show; she's also currently in the running for the love interest in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier"), Jumayn Hunter ("Attack The Block") and newcomer Madalina Ghenea have all come.
