Film includes memories from visitors to the venue including Andrea Riseborough, Ken Loach.
Newcastle’s independent Tyneside Cinema is the subject of a new feature documentary The Dream Palace, that will premiere at the venue on Wednesday 28 February.
The Dream Palace celebrates the UK’s only surviving Newsreel Cinema that is still operating, through a collection of archive footage and personal anecdotes from the people who have been part of its 80-year history.
The film is funded by a £59,400 grant from the National Lottery’s Heritage Lottery Fund (Hlf) as part of a wider cinema audiences project, and produced by the Tyneside’s creative director Ian Fenton and Project Manager Jo Hislop. It takes a look not just at the Tyneside’s place in the history of Newcastle upon Tyne but also at cinema-going across the UK.
This material was used for both a series of shorts that screened before features throughout 2017, and this new feature-length film, which...

A couple receives a violent housewarming gift in the form of a home invasion in The Blood Lands, now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD from Magnolia Pictures. For our latest Q&A feature, we recently caught up with The Blood Lands director Simeon Halligan.
Thanks for taking the time to converse with us today, Simeon. What elements from The Blood Lands screenplay attracted you to telling this story onscreen?
Simeon Halligan: First and foremost, Ian Fenton's screenplay was just so tense. We always knew it wasn't a complicated plot, it didnt have major character complexities but it was a page-turner, a script you couldn't put down as soon as you started reading it. A simple intriguing premise. You wanted to know what the threat was, supernatural or physical? Once you knew, then you wanted to know why our couple were being terrorised, all the while rooting for...

Having returned from the Moorish and Amazonian horrors to enter the multiplex – the home of the celluloid dream that has dispatched many a willing viewer to their homes to be terrified by creaking floorboards, so this week we find ourselves returning home.
In part two of our FrightFest special feature ‘Unwanted Guests’, HeyUGuys rendezvoused with director Simeon Halligan on the English-Scottish border to discuss his ‘Scottish referendum home invasion horror’, after which we stopped off to view a house just over the border.
Oddly enough it was as though we’d been there before…
How did you come to contribute your version of the home invasion film to the repertoire?
Ian Fenton wrote the script quite a long time ago. This was a good couple of years ago now, when there were not as many home invasion films around. So when we first started looking at the piece it was...

Having returned from the Moorish and Amazonian horrors to enter the multiplex – the home of the celluloid dream that has dispatched many a willing viewer to their homes to be terrified by creaking floorboards, so this week we find ourselves returning home. What better way to launch the ‘Unwanted Guests’ feature and whet the appetite than with a review of British made home invasion horror White Settlers?
Whilst the title carries connotations of colonialism, the drama here penned by Scottish writer Ian Fenton and helmed by director Simeon Halligan looks to the border of England and Scotland, and exploits the timely events of the upcoming referendum. Removed from the focus of the referendum however, White Settlers is a film to be admired for its simplicity and ability to strike a tempered balance between suspense and violence – high on the former; sparing on the latter.

White Settlers is the new film from West Midlands born director Simeon Halligan (Splintered); which begins with an English couple, Ed (Lee Williams) and Sarah (Pollyanna McIntosh), who are making a change in their life, leaving the hustle and bustle of the city to move to the quiet and quaint Scottish countryside, buying a worn-out yet workable house for a good price with plans to renovate it in their own time. They move in and on their first night begin to hear noises, while in bed, coming from downstairs. Their inspections initially find nothing more than an open door but we soon find that Ed and Sarah’s home is being invaded by a number of pig-mask wearing Scottish men. When Ed goes missing, Sarah attempts to escape the assailants and find her husband,...

White Settlers, directed by the Grimmfest film festival's head honcho Simeon Halligan, is a tense, nightmarish tale of a couple who escape from the fast-paced life of London to live in a remote cottage in Scotland. But, as they soon find out, they are far from welcome.
Written by Ian Fenton, the film also stars Lee Williams ("The Tudors") and Joanne Mitchell (Before Dawn).
Synopsis
It’s Ed and Sarah’s first night at their new home, an isolated farmhouse. This should be a new beginning away from their stressful London lives. And at first it is; come sunset they fall in love all...

Currently in production and flying the flag for cream of the crop independent horror is Simeon Halligan's White Settlers, starring genre fave Pollyanna Mcintosh – with whom most of you are more than likely familiar due to her spectacular performance in the titular role in Lucky Mckee's The Woman.
Also starring fellow up-and-coming British talent Lee Williams ("The Tudors") and produced by the people behind Manchester horror festival Grimmfest, not to mention penned by BAFTA nominated writer Ian Fenton, White Settlers looks like it could be the much awaited breath of life that British horror needs.
While working on set, Pollyanna was gracious enough to take some time to speak with us between takes and let us all know what horrors lie in store in this tale of a young couple trying for an idyllic life in the country that soon find themselves besieged by unspeakable terrors...
