Dean DeBlois doesn’t want to take anything away from the amazing work that his lighting department and visual effects department did on “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” but in our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above) he couldn’t help singling out the perspective that Oscar-winner Roger Deakins brought as a consultant. “I don’t think you can really extract Roger’s influence from any of the imagery in the films.” Deakins became involved with the series during the first film. DeBlois and his co-director, Chris Sanders, having come from hand-drawn animation wanted to bridge the lighting process with how it’s done in CG by bringing on someone who’s known for their work behind the camera. He came in for a pitch and later said that he would come fully on board the project. “It was a huge surprise for us. We thought...

I’ve got a very unsettling and brutal short film for you to watch today called The Collection. This thing is incredibly intense and it does a great job of building the tension, and I will warn you that it does contain some graphic violence.
I don’t really want to get into the story because I can’t really say anything without spoiling it. I’ll just say that it starts out with an elderly man putting on his headphones to listen to some music before he starts mopping the floor. From there, it leads audiences to an unexpected and gut-wrenching ending.
The short film was directed by Carlos Baena, Carlos Puertolas, and Rani Naamani. I like how they deceive the audience with the way the short was shot.
Watch the short below and let us know what you think.

Even though it isn't October anymore, it doesn't mean we can't still feature new horror short films. Take this one, for example, another creepy new horror suspense short that will leave you feeling a bit unsettled. The Collection is a horror short made by three filmmakers and friends: Carlos Baena, Carlos Puertolas, and Rani Naamani. All of them have worked in the VFX or animation industries in San Francisco, and also love to make films on the side. The Collection stars Bob Roden and Carla Westlund. It's a deceptive film with a sucker punch ending, which is what makes it so unsettling. Warning: this contains some graphic violence. Thanks to Carlos for the tip on this. Embedded directly from Vimeo, there's no official description for this short. The Collection is co-directed and co-written by friends/filmmakers Carlos Baena (@Carlos_Baena), Carlos Puertolas, and Rani Naamani (@RaniNaamani). Produced by Elizabeth Ussery...

Too Late Short Film. Rani Naamani‘s Too Late (2011) short film stars Nelson Brown. Too Late plot synopsis: “A victim of an attack returns home to work on the wound but the injury turns out to be more than he expected.”
This short film is very short but it is well done. I did not know what to expect until the end of the short film. It’s pretty clever and cool.

The best short films out there come from filmmakers who understand the medium and know how to do a lot with a little. Such is the case with Rani Naamani's zombie-themed opus Too Late.
If you have a couple of minutes to kill, we cannot recommend using them to watch this film enough. It tells the tale of one human's transformation into a member of the undead scourge and features some really neat zombie effects from Nedy Acet. Nelson Brown stars.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy this one, kids! You will not regret it. Seriously, we promise. Stop being an asshole. Just watch it. Really. No really.

Rani Naamani is an animator employed by Dreamworks, but in his free time, he dreams up bite-sized short films that offer more than their two-minute runtimes would suggest -- perfect for those of us with web-induced Add. Naamani started a side project this year aptly titled Side Films, where him and his friend Carlos Puertolas try to learn more about filmmaking by doing a series of short films.
But these guys seem to have the basics down. Their latest project, "Too Late," is a zombie tale with horror and humor at all the right parts. At less than two minutes, it's smartly paced -- an older film, "Happy Birthday…," has a similar effect in a matter of 60-some seconds. We're hoping for 15 seconds next. Guys, how about it?
