The Notorious B.I.G. was shot to death 20 years ago on March 9, 1997. The rapper’s murder will be forever linked with that of his peer Tupac Shakur, though the pair are just in a long line of musicians who’ve shuffled off the mortal coil under less-than-clear circumstances. Even if the ink has dried on the official paperwork, rumors still abound about …
Sam Cooke (1964)
Possibly the greatest “pure” soul singer in American history, Cooke’s career was on the rise after a string of hits when he was shot to death in a seedy L.A. motel, allegedly by the hotel’s manager in self-defense.

Exclusive: Fulwell 73 and Heavenly Films to co-produce a feature based on a screenplay by Kill Your Friends author John Niven, directed by documentary maker Paul Kelly.
Niven’s first novel, Kill Your Friends, has been adapted into a feature starring Nicholas Hoult that will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) tomorrow.
But more than a decade ago, before the Britpop-set novel was even published, Niven wrote screenplay Junk Mail with writing partner Nick Ball.
The story centres on a twentysomething postman who knows all the secrets of the residents in a rural village after years of rifling through their letters.
When a wealthy family relocates to the area from London, he soon discovers the real reason for their move and a growing obsession leads to an eventual bloody showdown.

"Don't have to explain myself to you / I don't give two f**ks about your review" said Paul Weller with The Jam on 'The Modern World' back in 1977, so I don't think he'll be all that bothered by what I say about his band or this documentary.
He doesn't have to worry either way. Screened in the city ahead of its broadcast on Sky Arts next week, The Jam: About The Young Idea is a fine documentary that can reel in movie fans who hadn't necessarily surrendered to the beat of Weller, Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler before.
Riding on the back of a new photo exhibition of the band, the film is directed with economy and style by Bob Smeaton, one of the men behind the remarkable Beatles Anthology series from the mid-1990s.

The Nation's Favourite '80s Number One: ITV, 9pm
We're not quite sure who votes in these programmes, but tonight we will see who a certain number of people in the UK decided was the best chart-topper of the 1980s.
Expect high entries from Michael Jackson, The Human League, Madness, Madonna and co, and interviews with the likes of Spandau Ballet and Bonnie Tyler.
Transporter: The Series: Channel 5, 9pm
The third episode of the TV adaptation that may be sadly lacking a lot of Jason Statham, but still packs its own dose of punch and power.
Frank takes a job chauffeuring a rich young socialite back to her father, before it quickly descends into a protection task involving German crime lords.
Cordon: BBC Four, 9pm
The final two parts of the Flemish drama air on BBC Four this evening, starting with an explosive raid on the lab as Jana is desperate to escape.

I sat down with Nina Hoss after the premiere of her new film Phoenix at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. Her sixth collaboration with director Christian Petzold, we discuss their developing dynamic, as well as how she knew while working on their first feature (the 2001 film Something to Remind Me) that they would have a fruitful relationship. The actress wasn’t aware that Phoenix had previously been made into the film Return From the Ashes, but we discuss its likeness to other post war film noirs and pre WWII plastic surgery films. Hoss briefly discusses her interest in music and how her marriage to music producer Alex Silva granted her an opportunity to flex her musical talents as a guest vocalist on a track from the Manic Street Preachers earlier in 2014.

The German actress sang at Glastonbury and acted alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman in his final film. It seems America may soon decide Hoss is boss…
Nina Hoss is at that juncture where years of acclaim could tip her over into outright fame. She is two months off 40 and can bank on the admiration of international arthouse audiences, who have seen her in a run of disquieting thrillers by Christian Petzold. These include Yella, for which she won the best actress prize at the Berlin film festival in 2007; Jerichow (2008), a German take on The Postman Always Rings Twice; and Barbara (2012), an enigmatic portrait of life under the Gdr. She also collaborated last year with Manic Street Preachers on the song “Europa Geht Durch Mich”, produced by her partner, Alex Silva. She even went on the road with the band, performing at Glastonbury. “I had my wellies,” she tells me.

No glitz, no glamour, just a measured, unpretentious documentary for the faithful
Almost 30 years after forming and 20 years after the disappearance and presumed death of their rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards, Manic Street Preachers have become the subject of a sympathetic documentary from Elizabeth Marcus – in the fan’s-eye-view style that is becoming de rigueur, and which has been applied to the Stone Roses, Pulp and Morrissey. The emphasis is on a supportive approach that doesn’t mythologise: the camera shows rehearsal, recording and live shows, with fans of all shapes and sizes being interviewed in the same unpretentious, respectful way as the band members themselves. Speaking as someone who knows nothing of the group’s music, I found that Manic Street Preachers seem intriguingly to inhabit a world outside the usual one of celebrity obsession: they have become hugely successful (more slowly than they hoped), but there is no glitz and glamour,...

Charlotte Church has opened up about her Channel 4 series The Charlotte Church Show, revealing that she would like to get back into comedy.
The singer, whose chat show ran for three series, explained that she would consider a return to comedy but wouldn't want to make any compromises over its content.
"I would love to do something like that in comedy again, I love doing comedy and I loved doing that show," she told Digital Spy.
"Especially the first series of it. The first series was a bit more edgy and we were free to be a bit more surreal with it but then because it got quite successful and the channel sort of jumped on it and wanted it to be this, that and the other, and kind of made it have a more mainstream appeal, then it lost something I thought.

The Cardigans singer on an enigmatic New York songwriter, making special trips to buy chocolate, Frances Ha and the pleasures of a good biography
Nina Persson is best known as the lead singer of the Cardigans, the Swedish pop-rock band propelled to international stardom by their 1996 single Lovefool, which was was featured on the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's film Romeo + Juliet. After The Cardigans' fourth album, Gran Turismo, went multiplatinum in 1998, the five-piece took a break from recording to pursue solo projects, with Persson releasing records as A Camp. Remember last year when through its Amazon overlords Lovefilm put several pilots online including the pretty good failed Zombieland pilot? Well, they are at it again with ten new pilots, none of which have committed to series yet but with which the lucky few will go to one of those full season exclusive type deals that Netflix do so well.
I don’t know about you but I kind of wish they would just commit to something right out the gate and take the risks, its paid off for Netflix so far and Amazon are attracting some major talent to their stable too.
The pilots include; Bosch a detective show based on a Michael Connelly book series and starring the great Titus Welliver, Kids shows Wishenproof, Hardboiled Eggheads, The JoB and Graff Show and Gortimer Gibbons Life on Normal Street. We also have comedy from The Rebels; a kind of...

Ahead of this year’s BAFTAs, HeyUGuys had the privilege to catch up with the writer-director of Victor + Kelly Kieran Evans who is nominated for the Best British Debut BAFTA on Sunday the 16th February. It is a nomination he never expected, but one that he admits has put him a great position.
Whilst the purpose of our conversation was his BAFTA nomination, in speaking with Kieran I uncovered a compelling story of his journey towards his nomination for outstanding debut. Behind the BAFTA gold mask lies a story of a mother and her son’s love for cinema, their appreciation of cinematic magic, a filmmakers reverence for the craft of filmmaking, and the desire to create stories that have and will continue to take us out of our space.
A fitting way to begin proceedings would be to ask about the genesis of Kelly + Victor, which has culminated in...

First of all, the single most important thing we learned from comics and media coverage in general in 2013 is that people will read anything if it’s organized into a numbered list of bullet points.
Now, here are ten examples of why I loved sequential art last year.
1. Science is both awesome and terrifying.
The comic book reading public really discovered the joys of science this year, and the results have been fantastic. From Vertigo’s Federal Bureau Of Physics, a scattered adventure in anti-gravity and bubble universes, to the Discovery Channel-esque explorations of The Wake (Vertigo), physics and biology and chemistry have absolutely become “cool”—even the basis, once again, for science fiction stories about actual science. Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera recently floored us with the intense and no-holds-barred Black Science (Image), a kind of cautionary tale of multiple dimensions involving frog aliens and robot Indians and...

The Manic Street Preachers have so far spent twenty one years creating brilliant and important records. Unlike most bands that break into their third decade they have flourished rather than becoming stale. This time around the Manics have taken a breath and ‘Rewind The Film’ is a record that for a moment pauses and looks back nostalgically on youth in small welsh towns and the happiness and contentment that could be gleaned from simpler times. The anger of youth is still burning in everything the Manics produce but this time it is seen from a new perspective. Getting old is lamented but the blunt and defiant lyrics remain.

He said: "She'd been dead to me for years and years... I see my own community f**king wrecked and barely ever recovered, so I don't really need to celebrate or dance. It didn't have any impact on me at all. The damage has been done where I live, so...

London, July 19: Amy Winehouse, Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain all died when they were just 27-years-old.
Even Richey Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers, can be said to have died at the same age if the date of his disappearance can be taken as the time of his presumed suicide.
Twenty-seven, observed the Washington Post, was 'rock 'n' roll's most dangerous number.'
Howard Sounes, whose book Amy, 27 looks at the supposed phenomenon, said that the 27 Club is a media construct based on a coincidence.

After an extended hiatus Welsh rockers Manic Street Preachers are releasing their 11th studio album ‘Rewind The Film’ in September. Speaking of the record James Dean Bradfield told the Daily Star:
“The acoustic album has a soul vibe, with Rolling Stones-style horns. The first single is very positive, but there are darker moments too.”
If it is anything like the beautiful title track which features Richard Hawley, it will be a contemplative, delicate record that is a definite change of direction from most of their previous efforts, not least 2010′s ‘Postcards From A Young Man.’ The single ‘Show Me The Wonder’ and a UK tour to promote the record are also due in September.
In the meantime here are some of the most vital tracks from the Manic Street Preachers’ back catalogue. Everybody is familiar with ‘A Design For Life’ and ‘If You Tolerate This…’ so there are no big hits here.

From Classic FM to Spiral, Ian McCulloch reveals his cultural picks of the moment
Best known as the frontman of post-punk rockers Echo & the Bunnymen, Ian McCulloch was born and raised in Liverpool and formed the band in 1978. Their 1980 debut album, Crocodiles, garnered both critical admiration and chart success and McCulloch was nicknamed "Mac the Mouth" by the press for his outspoken comments aimed at the likes of Bono and the Smiths. The Bunnymen released four more albums, including 1984's Ocean Rain which spawned singles such as The Killing Moon and Silver, but in 1988 McCulloch quit to go solo, releasing two albums under his own name before taking a break from recording. In the mid-1990s he resumed his creative relationship with the band but continued to work on his own material, recently featuring on Some Kind of Nothingness by Manic Street Preachers. The Queen Of Versailles + Q&A | Nick Abrahams | Slapstick 2013 | Loco London Comedy Film Festival
The Queen Of Versailles + Q&A, London
Few recent documentaries have summed up the craziness of our times as well as Lauren Greenfield's The Queen Of Versailles. It focused on the wealthy Siegel family and their matriarch Jackie, whose attempts to build one of the largest private homes in America were stalled by the sub-prime meltdown. The film-makers and the Siegels apparently fell out, too. But what happened next? This one-off screening is the chance to find out, with both Greenfield and Jackie Siegel attending the Q&A.

Nick Abrahams, London
He recently received an award for his gorgeous Sigur Rós short film (in which Aidan Gillen, pictured, is guided by a talking snail), but Abrahams has been experimenting visually for the coolest bands for decades, including Huggy Bear, Stereolab, Leftfield,...

This year, Manic Street Preachers released a swanky 20th anniversary deluxe edition of their debut album Generation Terrorists. As well as digging up all manner of demos, videos, live tracks and rarities, the band gave their 1992 opening statement a proper listen through and shared their thoughts. Over the next three weeks, we'll get the whole thing covered. Here's what they had to say about the first six tracks. "It was supposed to be the Stones playing metal," frontman and guitarist James Dean Bradfield says of the riff to 'Slash 'n' Burn'. Bassist Nicky Wire added of 'Nat West-Barclays-Midlands-Lloyds': "It was a bit of a cornerstone when we were doing it. It was meant to be one of the big tracks of the record. "A (more)...

Manic Street Preachers have revealed that they have started work on a new album. Frontman James Dean Bradfield has confirmed that they are planning a follow-up to 2010's Postcards from a Young Man, but said that he has been unable to come up with a way to describe its sound. "I'm trying to find a good word for the next record. I'm not going to say esoteric because no-one wants to hear that word, it's not even eclectic," he is quoted as saying to Bang Showbiz. "That would be the ultimate Situationist, bizarrist spectacle wouldn't it? Us being played over the airwaves in some Enormodome in front of 20,000 mad Yanks in Colorado somewhere..." I can only apologise for my absence, as I’m sure there’s been an empty space left in the usual music opinion based harassment you receive, but I’ve been on a bit of a big transitional period – I’ve moved far away and become a scumbag student again.
It’s been longer still though since I last forced multiple musicians on you with one of my ‘Things You Should Be Listening To’ features – an End of The Road festival special being the last. So, to mark my return to your lives I’ll be starting off with, as you’ve guessed from the title having clicked it open to read this, a ‘Things You Should Be Listening To’ feature. Better yet though, I’m being a lazy gobshite again and making it a special feature.

For most holidays, you can find music that's generally of the celebratory sort. When it comes to Presidents' Day, however, the selection is more of a mixed bag. From the obscure references ("Whip It") to the general ("Presidents and Magistrates") to the more obvious ("James K. Polk"), the American president has been alternately lauded and pummeled in song. In putting together this playlist, more often we've found it's been the latter. Take a spin through our list of 13 presidential songs, one-by-one with selected lyrics/explanations, or in full below, and let us know what we missed in the comments.

Art is alchemy. Who can say why one work of art lives and another dies? Why one artist can create images that take flight while another works assiduously at producing entropic stuff? Or why art that once seemed magical suddenly seems gross? Like I say – it's an alchemical process that defies logic.
The most alchemical British artist of my generation is Jeremy Deller. This curator of social happenings has none of the conventional attributes of an artist at all. Nicky Wire is a huge fan of John Lydon's lyrics. The Manic Street Preachers bass player counts the lyrics of the Sex Pistols 'God Save the Queen' as his favourite, and loves the venom and message the young singer - then called Johnny Rotten - put into the 1977 anti-monarchist song. He said: ''When there's no future how can there be sin? / We're the flowers in the dustbin / We're the poison in your human machine / We're the future, your future,' it's still so powerful, so situationist and so real. For that to come from a 20-year-old John Lydon is quite staggering, really.' Nicky also counts the lyrics of The Smiths frontman Morrissey and the poems...

'Horribly funny' Irish movie debut by John Michael McDonagh beats Submarine and Attack the Block
A debut film that became the most successful independently funded Irish movie ever has won the Guardian First Film Award. The Guard, directed by John Michael McDonagh, is a black comedy about a cynical, boozy policeman played by Brendan Gleeson, who takes on three drug dealers. Gleeson was nominated for a Golden Globe for the role.
Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw, one of the judges, said it was a work of "originality and wit … horribly funny, deliciously incorrect, with an unexpectedly stirring, old-fashioned friendship between two lawmen."
In a strong year for film debuts, The Guard beat the Tyrannosaur, Submarine, and Attack the Block to win the prize. McDonagh, who was born in London but made his film in Ireland, described his win as terrific. "I read over the long list and thought there were...

One could argue that the enduring popularity of genre motifs is a direct result of the death of God.
Prior to the Enlightenment, the people of the ancient and medieval worlds knew their place. They knew that there were gods and demons, monsters and spirits. They knew that the good things in life could be lured to them by undertaking certain actions and they knew that the bad things could be kept in the shadows by undertaking other actions. They knew that their lives were meaningful and they knew that they were part of the elaborate tapestry of myth, prophecy and magic that held the world together. However, as science cast its light into the darkness old certainties were overturned and magic was forced from the world along with that sense of purpose that the ancients took for granted. Suddenly, humanity knew that there was nothing to fear because nothing really mattered.

From massive hits ('A Design For Life') to rare 7" singles ('Feminine Is Beautiful'), number ones ('If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next') to B-Sides ('Dead Trees & Traffic Islands'), thanks to Manic Street Mania for capturing and listing the whole lot! (In full: 'A Design For Life', 'So Why So Sad', 'Some Kind Of Nothingness', 'From Despair To Where', 'Die In The Summertime', 'Feminine Is Beautiful', 'Leviathan', 'Indian Summer', 'You Can't (more)...
