The only subjects that were off limits in John Mulaney: Baby J were his divorce and his newborn son.
Otherwise, the highly-admired comedian spent his entire Baby J special for Netflix — his first in five years – talking candidly about the “action-packed” time in his life when his friends staged an intervention before sending him off to rehab.
At the moment his friends and family confronted him about his addiction, Mulaney wasn’t exactly focused on its stand-up potential. “I was quite under the influence when I arrived,” he told Deadline.
But after coming out of detox, Mulaney reached out to friend/comedian Joe Mande “to kind of get a handle on what had happened there. The cast of Parks and Recreation reunited on the picket line as the stars and crew members came together to fight for a better contract with the studios.
Amid the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, the cast of the NBC sitcom was seen outside the Amazon Studios in Culver City.
The picketers on the scene included Aubrey Plaza, Adam Scott, Nick Offerman, Retta, Jim O’Heir, Ben Schwartz, Alison Becker, Kirk Fox, Joe Mande, Susan Yeagley, Allan McLeod and Colton Dunn.
Alongside the Parks and Recreation stars, Li’l Sebastian, Pawnee’s famous miniature horse, also made an appearance.

When Mouse Rat sang "Maybe someday we'll saddle up again," this must have been what they meant: famed "Parks and Recreation" mini horse Li'l Sebastian was spotted on the WGA and SAG-AFTRA picket line yesterday, despite having canonically passed away back in 2011. The sweet horsie's return came in the middle of a near-total cast reunion for the beloved NBC sitcom, and was captured for posterity on Jean-Ralphio actor Ben Schwartz's Instagram.
"Lil Sebastian made a rare public appearance to support the #sagaftrastrike #wgastrike alongside some people who understand how amazing he is," Schwartz wrote, sharing photos of a mini horse wearing with a pretty blond mane wearing a purple "#7 Lil Sebastian" jersey.

Exclusive (Updated with Jen Statsky’s comments): Filming on Season 3 of HBO Max/Universal TV hit comedy series Hacks, starring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, has been halted due of the writers strike, Deadline has learned. According to sources, production will be on pause for the duration of the work stoppage.
It is hard for any scripted series to shoot without writing showrunners on set. This is especially true for Hacks as writing is at the heart of the show — it centers on an aging comedian Deborah Vance (Smart) and an up-and-coming writer Ava Daniels (Einbinder) who are writing together. Hacks was created by Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, who serve as showrunners. According to WGA rules, members cannot provide any writing services, including script revisions during filming, while a strike is going on.

Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?
“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

It’s good to be a Hulu subscriber because Mel Brooks‘ History of the World, Part II series is finally ready to rewrite the past for laughs and scrutiny. Exclusive: Deadline has a pair of exclusive tracks from composer Carlos Rafael Rivera’s Season 1 soundtrack for HBO Max’s Peabody and multi-Emmy Award-winning comedy series Hacks, which is set for digital release tomorrow via Lakeshore Records.
Renewed for a third season just this morning, the series explores the evolving, dark mentorship between legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her young, entitled writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder).
Rivera’s evocatively melodic score for Hacks revolves around its character themes for Ava and Deborah, also heard in Season 2. “Other than having the privilege to score themes for the amazing Hacks duo that is Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels, played respectively by the incredibly talented Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, it is great to collaborate with one of the best comedy writing teams in Jen Statsky, Lucia Aniello, and Paul W. Downs,” says the composer of his experience on the series.

“Hacks” was among the most beloved series of summer 2021 when it premiered on HBO Max — and it remains one of the streamer’s strongest series. Emmy-winning showrunners and creators Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky took a darkly funny stance on the toils and tribulations of show business in Las Vegas, centering their half hour on approaching-over-the-hill stand-up act Deborah Vance, played by the inimitable Jean Smart. Ahead of the series’ return May 12 for a Season 2, watch the brand new trailer below.
Of course, the true center of it all is the hilarious mentorship between Deborah and her millennial protégé Ava (Hannah Einbinder). This time around, they’re on a road trip across the country to workshop Deborah’s new routine, as she’s hoping to evolve her act. Jean Smart’s Deborah Vance is back on the road in the Season 2 trailer for the HBO Max series “Hacks,” and she’s got a new tour manager along for the ride.
“The Connors” star Laurie Metcalf plays the new addition to the team, revealing in the first few seconds of the trailer that she goes by “Weed,” a nickname given to her by rocker Pete Wentz.
Season 2’s trailer is full of hilarious moments of generational clashes between Deborah and her young writer, Ava, played by Hannah Einbinder. During one moment, Ava asks for some fridge space on the tour bus for her kombucha, and Deborah helps her out with that request — by tossing the drink out the window.

“Coda” and “Don’t Look Up” added momentum to their hopes for Oscar gold by nabbing the top film honors Sunday at the 74th annual Writers Guild Awards.

You made it through the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Directors Guild Awards, and the Producers Guild Awards, too. The wait for the Oscars is almost over, but one more major guild had yet to give out its trophies before the Academy Awards. Tonight, Hollywood’s top writers came together for the Writers Guild of America Awards, which honored the finest achievements in film and television writing.
On the film side, the nominees were actually quite different from what you’ll see at the Oscars next week. Apple Studios emerged the big winner of what some say is an important Oscar precursor on Saturday night, as “Coda” took the top film prize at the annual Producers Guild Awards.
What began as a Sundance sales sensation directed by Sian Heder — the heart-tugging story following the only hearing family member in a tribe of charismatic New England fishermen — won the Darryl F. Zanuck award for best motion picture producing. Other notable film winners at Los Angeles’ Fairmont Hotel were Questlove’s “Summer of Soul” for documentary feature, and the musical juggernaut “Encanto” for best producers of an animated film.
“Succession” took home the Norman Felton Award for outstanding episodic drama. Apple’s “Ted Lasso” continued its trophy collection spree by claiming the Danny Thomas Award for outstanding television comedy. HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” won the David L. HBO Max has added four great actresses to the second season of its acclaimed comedy “Hacks,” with Laurie Metcalf, Martha Kelly, Ming-Na Wen and Margaret Cho coming aboard.

Per the “Hacks” Season 2 logline, “The dark mentorship between legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her young, entitled writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) continues to evolve as the two travel across the country workshopping Deborah’s new stand-up act.”
Of course, if you remember what happened just before the cut to black at the end of Season 1, you know things are probably very, very awkward between Deborah and Ava.
A three-time Emmy-Winner for “Roseanne” and Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winner for “Lady Bird,” Metcalf has also won eight Tony awards among her many accolades.

The Producers Guild of America announced its nominations for the motion picture and television categories for the upcoming 33rd PGA Awards, and it was a good day for the streamers (once again).
Netflix ruled the film side with three films landing in the field of 10 nominees: “Don’t Look Up” from Adam McKay, “The Power of the Dog” from Jane Campion and “Tick, Tick … Boom!” from Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Warner Bros. captured two nods from its slate: “Dune” from Denis Villeneuve and “King Richard” from Reinaldo Marcus Green.
At the best possible moment with Oscar voting opening today, Amazon Studios’ “Being the Ricardos” from Aaron Sorkin snagged one of the coveted spots, which helps its best picture chances considerably.
Some of the omissions were pronounced, most notably Apple Original Films’ “The Tragedy of Macbeth” from Joel Coen missing out on a nod, even though the heartwarming “Coda” made it into the lineup.

Exclusive: Stath Lets Flats producer Roughcut TV has hired two development execs to bolster its scripted comedy/drama credentials and is taking the hit Channel 4 comedy back out to U.S. networks.
Roughtcut Managing Director Ash Atalla said Jamie Demetriou’s three-time-bafta-winning comedy about a hapless North London-based Greek Cypriot estate agent will be pitched to the U.S. in the coming months. A single-camera Fox version was initially in development, titled Bren’s Rents, and showrunner Joe Mande, a writer on The Good Place and Parks and Recreation, remains attached.
Atalla told Deadline “being geographically specific” and “placing trust” in Mande as showrunner will be key to Stath Lets Flats’ success in the U.S.
“Maintaining complete control is a fool’s errand,” he said. “We feel such ownership over our own shows but you can’t sell your house and then tell people how to arrange the furniture.
