Alexi Tan, a screenwriter and director who was a protégé of John Woo, has teamed with artist Charles Simpson to launch comic book “Monk Wars.”
The “Monk Wars” universe is a dystopian gritty world filled with martial arts action and a broad array of diverse characters. The first book will follow Monk Ma, who has ancient animal powers, as he assembles his followers to take on the Rat-Men soldiers.
The project is being steered by David U. Lee’s Beijing-based Leeding Media which will manage all media rights to the comic book including film, television and web series. Weston Suh’s Los Angeles-based Final Order Comics has partnered to take print publication rights for the first book and subsequent issues.

Jessica Chastain’s “Ava” has skipped a theatrical release in China, but is instead to get the widest possible online outing in the Middle Kingdom. From Saturday it is available on China’s four largest generalist streaming platforms: Tencent Video, Alibaba-owned Youku, iQIYI and Mango TV.
The maneuver was piloted by Los Angeles and Beijing based Leeding Media. The David U. Lee-headed company licensed the rights from Voltage Pictures, steered it through Chinese censorship and picks up a “presented by” credit.
Directed by Tate Taylor, “Ava” sees Chastain as an assassin who has to fight for her own survival after one of her missions goes wrong. It enjoyed staggered theatrical releases around the world from June onwards. Its limited U.S. release started from Sept. 25 and was followed by premium VoD outings on Amazon and iTunes.
There have been very few American films sold into China this year.

Leeding Media, a company which straddles the U.S. and Chinese film industries, has set up a development deal with prominent Hollywood independent producer Revolution Studios. The agreement follows renewal of most of Leeding’s portfolio of movie rights for China.
“This is a very flexible deal that see the two companies jointly develop film and television properties based on Revolution Studios’ extensive library. We are looking at possible TV adaptations, remakes and Broadway shows,” Leeding Media CEO and founder David U. Lee told Variety. “This deal is possible now that Leeding Media’s China library business is well established. Our new focus on development and production is about achieving global distribution, not just China.”
The development agreement was born from a long-standing personal friendship between Lee, who has previous executive roles at Idg Asia and the Weinstein Company, and Revolution’s co-executive producer Vince Totino. As well as international insight,...
