The unique live action/animation comedy Son of Zorn is no more. Fox announced the cancellation today after only one season.
The show was about a cartoon barbarian warrior (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), that was trying to assimilate into real-life Orange County where his son and ex-wife lived. It was created by Wilfred‘s Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne, and executive-produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie).
Entertainment Weekly reports that Fox was not happy with how Zorn was performing in the ratings.
This is kind of a bummer, as I thought the show was pretty funny and very unique. It definitely had room for improvement and we could have easily seen that had Fox renewed.

Fox has an interesting little experiment kicking off its fall season Sunday night with the half-animated, half live-action sitcom Son of Zorn. It's amusing with a couple of strong laughs, and some creativity that might bode well for the future, but Zorn almost immediately brings up the question of whether it can be a sustainable conceit. Series creators Eli Jorne and Reed Agnew, who also co-wrote the pilot, have already departed the series that's executive produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Last Man on Earth, The Lego Movie), and that's never a good sign. As one of the boldest and bravest new comedies this season (and, maybe, of the last few years), Fox’s new single-camera sitcom Son of Zorn disappointingly falls back on a few expected sources of humor in a way that all-too-often negates the bravura, bananas premise of the show. Set initially in the far-off island land of Zephyria, Son of Zorn eventually migrates into the real world – California in particular – while keeping the animated sprites of anything related to Zephyria’s Saturday morning, G.I. Joe day-dreamscape very much intact.
There’s wonder in that, in the way that co-creators Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne constantly come up with interesting and surprising bits of Zephyria to throw into the real world, but the wonder stops short of awe – and awesomeness – for every dud of a joke. And, in a comedy pilot, there’s...

"21 Jump Street" and "The Lego Movie" directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have settled on their next TV project which will be entitled "Son of Zahn".
The duo have given an 8-10 minute pilot presentation for a hybrid animated/live-action comedy series which centers on an animated Barbarian father who comes home for the first time in ten years to his live-action son and ex-wife.
He finds that reconnecting with his family, struggling through his mundane office job and dealing with the banality of suburban life is much harder than waging actual war in his distant, animated world.
Johnny Pemberton ("This Is 40 ") has been cast as Zahn's moody teenage son, Alan. Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers with the pilot to begin shooting later this summer.

Wilfred, Season 4: Episodes 1 & 2 – “Amends” & “Consequences”
Written by Reed Agnew & Eli Jorne (“Amends”) and David Baldy (“Consequences”)
Directed by Randall Einhorn
Airs Wednesday nights at 10 on Fxx
In the first two episodes of its final season, Wilfred embraces its mythology head-on. It’s hard to say whether or not this will go down well with viewers, because I don’t even know who is watching Wilfred anymore and why. So, to say that there are fans who enjoy these kinds of mythological turns in the story and that there are fans who enjoy the straight-up comedic episodes and that these two groups of people are in opposition is only conjecture. My guess is that anyone who is still watching Wilfred (one of television’s absolute best half-hour experiences–incredibly dark, psychologically disturbing but ultimately aimed at some of the core ideas of what it is to be a human being...

I am both gladdened and saddened by FX’s decision to renew Wilfred for a fourth and final season. I’ve been reviewing the dark comedy since its pilot episode first aired in 2011 and have found oodles of enjoyment from its twisted storytelling, which focuses on Ryan (Elijah Wood) and the bizarre life lessons he learns from a dog who looks like an Australian man in a dog costume: the titular Wilfred (Jason Gann). The series has never been a heavy hitter in the ratings, but it’s one of the more well written – and often beautifully shot – sitcoms. It is for that reason that Wilfred deserves one more season.
Nothing is more disheartening than a series that isn’t allowed to reach its conclusion. When Wilfred’s third season began spiralling downwards in the ratings – the season averaged only 580,000 total viewers – I became concerned FX would cancel the series...

Wilfred is both sticking around and making a move.
FX Networks announced today that the unique sitcom will return for a fourth and final season of 10 episodes… but it will do so on Fxx, the new network that is now also home to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League.
Stars Jason Gann and Elijah Wood will, of course, return for the show's concluding run, as will writer/producers Reed Agnew and Eli Jorné.
They took over as co-showrunners during Wilfred Season 3, which wrapped up in September.
Look for Wilfred Season 4 to kick off in the summer of 2014.

FX Networks has picked up comedy series Wilfred for a fourth and final season of 10 episodes. The series, an adaptation of Jason Gann and Adam Zwar’s Australian comedy of same name, will move to Fxx. The series, in which Elijah Wood stars, as a young man struggling to make his way in the world and Gann plays the neighbor’s irrepressibly brave, crude, and surly dog, averaged just under 1 million viewers in Season 3, and 655,000 Adults 18-49 per week on a first-run basis. Originally adapted for FX by David Zuckerman (Family Guy, American Dad, King Of The Hill), it’s currently exec produced by Zuckerman along with Gann, Reed Agnew and Eli Jorné, Rich Frank, and Jeff Kwatinetz of Prospect Park, Randall Einhorn, and Joe Connor and Ken Connor of Renegade, producers of the Australian version of the series. The mythology base of “Wilfred” is something that set it apart from any other comedy on FX, or on television for the most part. It’s a deep mythology that slowly started to crop up as the first season started to end and rolled straight into the second season. It’s a smart move that they’ve not given too much of the game away but give the viewer just enough morsels to keep you invested, and giving even more pathos and emotion to a show that could’ve stay within the realm of lazy scatological humor and pot jokes. Not that it doesn’t regardless, but where the juvenile humor is only a cursory element in an overall strong comedy. It’s a show you can mostly jump into but may leave new viewers scratching their heads,...

A review of tonight's "Wilfred" season premiere coming up just as soon as I vaguely remember the Troglodytes... After the end of "Wilfred" season 2, David Zuckerman stepped down as showrunner, but in what seems to be a rare orderly producer transition. Zuckerman remains involved, if not as active, and the new showrunners are "Wilfred" veterans Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne. Still, I wanted to see if "Wilfred" under the new bosses would be the same as "Wilfred" under the old bosses, and "Uncertainty" was reassuring: dark and weird and mysterious, but also full of big laughs. On the one hand,...

Chicago – Changing showrunners often proves the kiss of death for comedies. If you watched the Dan Harmon-less fourth season of “Community,” NBC owes you an apology. And so hearing that “Wilfred” was going to tweak its behind-the-scenes staff by moving David Zuckerman from showrunner to exec producer and sliding writer/producers Reed Agnew & Eli Jorne into lead roles, there was reason for concern. Don’t worry. The show is actually better — smarter, funnier, and better-paced. I had issues with the first two seasons of “Wilfred,” the second of which was just released on Blu-ray and DVD, but the start of the third season is easily the most promising to date.
Television Rating: 3.5/5.0
Why does “Wilfred” feel different? Well, it’s just funnier. The writing seems less focused on “man in dog costume” jokes, the dialogue is crisper, and the laughs are bigger. The plotting seems more refined and less...

After what feels like an eternity, we are finally at a point where news regarding FX’s amazingly bizarre comedy Wilfred is leaking out. While not as wildly talked about as some of FX’s other comedies – Louie and The League come to mind – Wilfred deserves just as much attention for it’s often daring approach to storytelling. And it’s just straight up hilarious to watch a man in a dog suit smoke a bong and bark at vacuum cleaners. Somehow Wilfred is able to make the darkest of situations funny, thanks to Elijah Wood and Jason Gann’s chemistry, but sooner or later Ryan (Wood) will need to figure out what Wilfred (Gann) is, which brings us back to this bit of casting news.

On the heels of FX renewing its comedy Wilfred for a third season, Wilfred producer FX Prods has inked an overall deal with the series’ executive producer/director Randall Einhorn. The pact locks in a key player on the show following the recent departure of executive producer/showrunner David Zuckerman. (Writer-producers Reed Agnew and Eli Jorné are taking the reins of the comedy in Season 3. In addition to his services on Wilfred, Einhorn will develop, executive produce and direct projects for FX. “Randall has been a major player in the world of FX comedies, first on Sunny and now on Wilfred,” said FX/FX Prods’ Eric Schrier. “He has great sensibilities and we look forward to him developing new projects for FX. After over a month of waiting, likely in which Elijah Wood demanded more opportunities to incorporate his DJ skills, FX has officially renewed Wilfred for a third season. Network president John Landgraf had remained positive at the TCAs that the show would be renewed once they could "work some things out'—things that may or may not but probably did involve Elijah Wood cutting it up on the ol' ones and twos, but also definitely involved its showrunner David Zuckerman stepping back to an executive producer's role. Writer-producers Reed Agnew and Eli Jorné will now be in charge when ...

FX has officially picked Wilfred up for a third thirteen-episode season. Also, FX announced that David Zuckerman, the man who adapted Wilfred for FX from the Australian original, has stepped down as the showrunner, turning the ship over to writer-producers Reed Agnew and Eli Jorné. Premiering next June, this will be Wilfred's first season without its Thursday night buddy, Louie, which was previously announced to be skipping 2013. Either way, it appears your "guy in a dog costume" costume (or, if you're a weirdo, your Elijah Wood costume) will be good for next year's Halloween as well.

"Wilfred" has been renewed for a third season, FX announced today (Oct. 31).
The quirky half-hour comedy stars Elijah Wood as a troubled attorney who strikes up an unlikely friendship with his neighbor's dog, Wilfred, played by Jason Gann.
For Ryan (Wood), Wilfred really is this man's best friend -- a walking, talking, pot-smoking Australian with a stuffed animal fetish dressed in a dog costume. Unfortunately, everyone else sees Wilfred as a cute canine.
David Zuckerman, who adapted the series from the Australian original co-created by and starring Gann as the titular character, is stepping down as showrunner. "Wilfred" writers Reed Agnew and Eli Jorné will share executive producing and showrunning duties in Season 3.
"As [network president] John (Landgraf) said at the summer TCA, it was only a matter of time before we picked up the show, we just had to work some things out," said Nick Grad, FX's executive vice president of original programming in a statement.

FX has announced that Wilfred has been renewed for a third season. The next round of episodes, totaling 13 in all, will begin production next spring for a June 2013 start date.

After lengthy negotiations, FX has renewed comedy Wilfred for a third season with a 13-episode order. The pickup was never in doubt, but it took longer than usual as FX had been trying to hammer out a new deal with the series’ showrunner David Zuckerman. (Most FX series have their showrunners locked in for the first two years only). In the end, Zuckerman, who adapted Wilfred for American television and has served as executive producer and showrunner for the first two seasons, closed a pact to continue as an executive producer but opted to step down as showrunner. He will still be involved in the show on a daily basis, likely not full-time. Wilfred writer/producers Reed Agnew and Eli Jorné, who have been on the show since the beginning, have been upped to executive producers and showrunners for the upcoming season. They had been groomed for the showrunner job by Zuckerman.

**Spoilers Lie Beyond Here**
When Wilfred began last year, it was an interesting premise for a comedy show to me. It had all the humor that could come out of the idea that everyone in the world sees a dog, this sad sack loner sees a man in a dog suit. Yes, it was slightly juvenile humor from a former writer of Family Guy, David Zuckerman and it seemed content to tow that line for a few episodes. Until, the show found itself in the perpetual place of being a dark, psychological comedy. I realize that for a show that began with a man, Ryan Newman, our lead character on this journey, attempting suicide, it really hadn’t reached for any darker places until it began reaching the end of the first season.
