Sennan Asbestos Disaster. Image courtesy of Shisso Productions. With Sennan Asbestos Disaster (2017), iconoclastic director Kazuo Hara makes a return ten years in progress, following his previous film The Many Faces of Chika (2005). At three hours and thirty-five minutes (usually screened with a short intermission), the film has many apparent differences from the past breathless titles for which he became known beginning in the early 1970s. Focused on a strong central protagonist pursuing a radical goal, these works depended on sustained conflict and collaboration between filmmaker and subject, defining a model of filmmaking he would theorize as “action documentary.” In distinction, this latest work is an ensemble piece assembled over a long period of time. Sennan Asbestos Disaster is focused on members of the Citizen Group for Sennan Asbestos Damage and their long legal battle that began with the filing of a lawsuit against the government in 2006 and went up to the Supreme Court.

“Call Me by Your Name” opened Thanksgiving weekend with stellar reviews and the best limited release numbers of 2017. Sony Pictures Classics acquired the elegiac romantic drama in 2016, and with a finished movie by summer’s end, screened it for Sundance programmers who immediately wanted the film in its lineup.
Now, “Call Me by Your Name” has become a consensus favorite among critics and audiences. It’s simple yet sophisticated, an escapist summer fantasy that feels authentic, and a lovely romance between 17-year-old Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and his professor father’s 24-year-old grad student Oliver (Armie Hammer). And it’s that rare four-quadrant specialty hit: embraced by straights and gays, women and men, young and old.
As classics scholars, Professor Perlman (Michael Stuhlbarg) and Oliver explore the eroticism of Greek statues and fine art; Perlman admires the Grecian ideal of love between two men; he wishes he had experienced what Elio and Oliver share that summer.

In TV’s own star wars, both Fox’s “The Orville” and CBS’ “Star Trek: Discovery” launched into similar orbits.
The two shows opened solid, a few weeks apart, on their respective live, linear broadcast networks. But in live+3 ratings (which includes three days of DVR and video on-demand usage), both premieres scored an identical total viewer average: 10.6 million each.
Fox’s “The Orville” was at least a light year ahead in the adults 18-49 demo, however, opening to a strong 3.5 rating — compared to the decent, but less stellar, 2.1 rating for “Star Trek: Discovery.”
Both shows premiered on a Sunday, but it’s not quite an apples-to-apples comparison: “Orville” benefited from a direct NFL lead-in (on Sept. 10), while “Discovery” premiered behind “60 Minutes” (on Sept. 24). Also, “Discovery” has been promoted as a CBS All Access property, and the Eye’s digital platform generated record sign-ups in time for the launch of...

“This Is Us” was the top-rated new series among 18-49 last year, but that may just be the beginning. As the fall 2017 season approaches, viewers have started catching up on (or re-watching) Season 1 of the hit NBC drama, according to this week’s Xfinity on Demand ranker.
“This Is Us” re-entered the chart at No. 20, even though the show has been off the air since March. Timing is key: Viewers aiming to catch up before the show’s Season 2 premiere only have two and a half weeks to get up to speed: “This Is Us” returns on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. Et. The show’s early return to the on-demand ranker may be a sign that a larger fanbase will be eager to keep up with “This Is Us” as it returns to a linear primetime schedule.

Summer 2017 will unfortunately be remembered for its real-life horrors, from Nazi-loving white supremacists marching in Charlottesville to the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas. Americans looking to escape the barrage of bad news didn’t do it in the movie theaters, where domestic box office was at its lowest in decades. But they did flock to television — and two shows in particular.
HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” aren’t new, but they are small-screen staples that experienced tremendous ratings lifts this season. Even as audiences continue to move to streaming services and other platforms, there’s still room for appointment TV, as viewers still watch linearly (or, at least, relatively fast via time-shifting) in order to stay in the pop culture conversation.

As audience habits change and viewers increasingly find other ways to consume programming, the Nielsen ratings only tell part of the story. Streaming and on-demand platforms continue to play a more important role in reaching eyeballs, particularly among young demographics.
Xfinity On Demand has agreed to exclusively share with IndieWire its weekly on-demand ranker, which adds up the cumulative views of all episodes within the series (past and current season). While not available nationwide, Xfinity’s on-demand service can be found in around 20 million homes across the country, demonstrating a good cross-section of U.S. audiences.
The list includes series that both are and aren’t in season, which is why “Outlander” appears. (Apparently fans are gearing up for the show’s upcoming return by diving into past seasons.) No surprise, “Game of Thrones” (which generally hovers inside the top 20 all year) is No. 1, given the show’s huge popularity.

HBO aren’t having a great week. For starters, they’ve recently fallen victim to a massive hack. In something that’s becoming an increasingly regular occurrence, a group of unidentified cyber-bandits targeted the studio and made away with a whopping 1.5Tb (i.e loads, to all non-techies) of data. Their haul was a good one too, including scripts and unaired episodes of shows like The Rock’s Ballers, Larry David’s long-awaited Curb Your Enthusiasm return plus their most popular show and well, the most popular show of them all right now, Game of Thrones.
Resisting ransom requests, the mystery hackers then made good on their promise and began leaking things online; scripts, shows, emails – the lot. Clearly a bit frazzled, HBO Spain then accidentally aired an upcoming episode of George R.R Martin’s fantasy epic a whole week ahead of its scheduled release date. It wasn’t...

Controversy be damned, Discovery’s “Phelps vs. Shark: Great Gold vs. Great White” took a bite out of the competition.
The special because Discovery’s highest-rated Shark Week telecast ever across adults 25-54, women 25-54, and women 18-49, and was last Sunday’s No. 1 basic cable show in primetime in the key adults 18-49 demo. Discovery’s “Shark-Croc Showdown” also made it into the week’s top 25 telecasts among adults 18-49.

The telecast was simulcast on ABC, Disney Channel, Disney Xd, Freeform, Lifetime and Lifetime Movies, and Disney said it ultimately reached 21 million total viewers via various platforms.
Disney also reports that “Descendants 2” was the No.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is your go-to guilty pleasure viewing?
Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter
Love what you watch, watch what you love and don’t be guilty to love what you love. Life is too short to have guilty pleasures. Of course, are there things I watch that I know aren’t “quality”? Sure! Any time I watch an episode of “House Hunters” or “House Hunters International” and find myself rooting for an incompatible, self-absorbed couple with an outlandish and indefensible budget to either break up on the spot or to make a housing choice that will surely facilitate a “Money Pit-“style scenario in which their...

After four years Martin Scorsese is back with another six filmic gems from all corners of the Earth. Love struggles in the slums of Thailand and the economic boom town of Taipei; underdog heroes undertake troubled missions in Turkey and Kazakhstan, a Malay storyteller plays cinematic games with basic narrative, and a vintage Brazilian art film is pure visual poetry. They’ve all been rescued by the World Cinema Project.

For the Doors — the psych rock pioneers who pushed the limits of minds and music with tracks like “Light My Fire,” “Love Me Two Times” and “L.A. Woman”— it can all be traced to the London Fog on Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip. Just months after forming, the nascent group was offered a residency at the down-at-the-heels club in early 1966. Having played little more than the odd college party for their UCLA film school friends, the London Fog became the Doors’ home base and testing ground. Six nights a week, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.

Star Wars: Rogue One is the first live action Star Wars film not to be scored by John Williams. Here are his highlights from the series...
As a franchise, Star Wars is inseparable from its music. Back in 1977, John Williams ushered in a resurgence of the Golden Age score with his Oscar-winning, thunderously heroic work on A New Hope, and his legacy is being continued with Michael Giacchino's score for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. In honour of the new movie, and as a celebration of some truly astonishing film music, here are the most unforgettable score moments from the Star Wars saga.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Amour Fou (Jessica Hausner)
An ecstatically original work of film-history-philosophy with a digital-cinema palette of acutely crafted compositions. Amour Fou seamlessly blends together the paintings of Vermeer, the acting of Bresson, and the psychological undercurrents of a Dostoevsky novel. It is an intensely thrilling and often slyly comic work that manages to combine a passionately dispassionate love story of the highest order with a larger socio-historical examination of a new era of freedom,...

Perhaps the most striking element of “Son of Zorn” – Fox’s live-action family sitcom with an animated disruptor tossed in – isn’t the giant, He-Man-esque “Defender of Zephyria” with the body of a Greek god and the voice of Jason Sudeikis. It’s Tim Meadows.
Now, stick with me here: Tim Meadows plays Craig, the online psychology professor engaged to Edie (Cheryl Hines!) and the man set to become the de facto father of Alan (full name: Alangulon). Much to the fury and mockery of Zorn, Alangulon’s birthfather, Craig is a weak, self-effacing authority figure, even when compared to people less stereotypically masculine than Zorn himself. I mean, Zorn has to be animated in order to fully capture his Schwarzenegger-ian male prowess.

“Hitchcock/Truffaut” (8/8)
“Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the La Rams” (8/10)

IndieWire Pick: “The Night Of” (Series Finale) (8/28)
HBO’s well-received limited series “The Night Of” will wrap up its eight-part whodunnit in late August. Steve Zaillian’s gritty drama, which examines a man’s fate after he wakes up charged with the murder of a relative stranger, debuted to rave reviews from critics and audiences. IndieWire’s Ben Travers writes, “By actively engaging on personal and political levels, Zaillian sucks the viewer into a nightmare scenario wholly dependent on two verdicts: first, whether or not Naz is found guilty, but also if he really did it.” Here’s hoping the series can maintain its slow burn thrills all the way to the end.

Subverting the Unexpected
At the end of the 20th century, Bobcat Goldthwait’s legacy read like a cheap joke: He was a screaming comedian from the eighties best known as Zed in the “Police Academy” franchise who once tried at his hand at directing a movie (“Shakes the Clown”). Those achievements barely skimmed the surface of Goldthwait’s ability, as the ensuing years made clear, when Goldthwait completely transformed his career into one of the most provocative American filmmakers working today. With the microbudget “Sleeping Dogs Lie” (aka “Stay”), Goldthwait showed his potential to funnel taboo subject matters into oddly touching, relatable human dramas, a proclivity he kicked up to a whole new level with the subversive black comedy “World’s Greatest Dad,” which features Robin Williams in one of his all-time great roles.

In accordance with previous reports, it’s been confirmed that Dwayne Johnson has been tapped to headline Sony’s Jumanji remake. However, there’s no word of his Central Intelligence co-star Kevin Hart closing a deal at this time.
Word of Johnson’s addition to the embryonic overhaul comes via the actor’s ever-active Instagram – which also brought word of Baywatch enlisting Pamela Anderson earlier today – revealing that Johnson’s Seven Bucks production banner will help shepherd Jumanji into development, with plans in place to start shooting in fall of this year.
Expect casting to hit up over the next few months, then, with producer Matt Tolmach and director Jake Kasdan also on board to steer the project from behind the scenes. Perhaps in an effort to allay fears that a Jumanji reboot is arguably unnecessary, Johnson noted that the team “promises to deliver something cool and special.. and not...

Earlier this week came the report that Dwayne Johnson and his "Central Intelligence" co-star Kevin Hart were both in early talks to star in the "Jumanji" remake at Sony Pictures.
Now Johnson has left a message on his Instagram page which confirms his involvement as official and says that shooting on the project is scheduled to start this fall in Honolulu. The post however does Not confirm Hart's involvement, with the comedian's schedule said to be more of an uncertainty.
Jake Kasdan will direct the film which will reportedly shoot after "Fast 8" and before the third season of HBO's "Ballers". The new "Jumanji" is scheduled to open on July 28th 2017.
It's Official: Love this script! Big movie news that me and my canine gal Shang are excited to share;) To produce, create and deliver original properties to fans like HBO's #ballers to this summer's #CentralIntelligence is one of the best parts of my job.

We all have predisposed notions about the infamous “romantic comedy.” As with other genres, there’s a large subsection of offerings, giving it a bad name. But, for every tired, cliché-driven comedy, there is another impressive offering that redefines the genre, garners plenty of laughs, and tells an honest story about love and relationships, however warped they may be. In the coming weeks, we’ll take a look at the fifty romantic comedy films that should be seen. These may not all be classic films, but they certainly put a stamp on the industry and the genre we affectionately call “rom-coms.”
#50. Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
Most of Wes Anderson’s films could be described as romantic comedies, but his 2012 effort stands out, as its central story focuses on young love and the need to find acceptance. In Anderson’s world, while quirks abound, true connections between characters are commonplace. With Moonrise Kingdom,...

Best Song Oscar 2016 contender 'Fifty Shades of Grey,' with Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. 74 entries in contention for 2016 Best Song Academy Award 'Tis the season for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to announce the semi-finalists – in some instances, the semi-semi-finalists – for the Academy Awards. Today, the Academy released the list of songs eligible for the 2016 Best Song – or rather, Best Original Song – Oscar. There are 74 contenders, with titles ranging from “Happy” and “I'll See You in My Dreams” to “Hypnosis” and “Bhoomiyilenghanumundo.” Curiously, apart from the inevitable animated and/or kiddie flicks (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, Anomalisa, Pan, Shaun the Sheep Movie, Home, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water, etc.) most of this year's contenders are songs from smaller movies and Bollywood/South Asian releases. Exceptions include Sam Taylor-Johnson's Fifty Shades of Grey, Ryan Coogler's Creed, Kenneth Branagh's...

The transformation of Nick Hornby from one of the major literary pioneers with a sort of sensitive Generation X masculinity (as with “Fever Pitch,” “High Fidelity” and “About A Boy”), to an Oscar-nominated screenwriter with particularly well-drawn female leads, is a fascinating one. Hornby made his screenwriting transition and picked up an Oscar nod, with “An Education” a few years back, and followed it up with last year’s “Wild,” before this year’s much-acclaimed “Brooklyn,” which seems all-but-certain to throw him into awards chat again. Chicago – Lori Petty will never be predictable, nor put into some show business box. The free-wheelin’ Ms. P applies her expansive performance skills to the role of Lolly – a guest spot that turned into a recurring character – on Netflix’s hot series “Orange is the New Black,” which released its third season on June 12th, 2015.
Lori Petty has gone through several show business lives. She began her career in the late 1980s, and established herself in popular films like “Point Break,” “A League of Their Own” – she wears a Rockford Peaches hat in Joe Arce’s Exclusive Portrait that accompanies this interview – and “Free Willy.” She readjusted her image from ingenue to badass in “Tank Girl,” and has gone on to character roles that exemplify that image. She even directed the film, “The Poker House” (2008), that featured the movie debut of Jennifer Lawrence.

Chicago – John Cusack has never rested on his laurels, which are many in his film career, nor stood still as an artist or an actor. His latest film is the magnificent “Love & Mercy,” in which he portrays music legend Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys as a middle aged man, trying to break free of the circumstances in his life.
Written by Oren Moverman and Michael Alan Lerner, and directed by Bill Pohlad, “Love & Mercy” – derived from a Brian Wilson song title – is the story of two crucial phases in the songwriter’s life. The younger phase, portrayed by Paul Dano, checks in with Wilson as he puts together The Beach Boys’ album masterpiece, “Pet Sounds.” At this point, the dissolution of Brian Wilson as Rock Star is beginning, and as a result the older phase of his life comes into view.

All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century. Check here for a complete list of our essays. Just one glance at the Oscar nominees for 1998 might make it seem less a questionable choice for “best year in film” — and more an insane one. Instead of a 1974 – The Godfather II, The Conversation, Chinatown, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, etc – or even a 1994, where Shawshank, Quiz Show, and Pulp Fiction lost to Gump – you choose a year where the Oscars would allow Roberto Benigni to climb atop both the figurative and literal chairs of the Shrine? Fine, step away from the Oscars. Would you still celebrate a year that saw not one, but two movies about asteroids threatening the Earth? A year that saw such scars carved across cinematic history as Patch Adams, My Giant, Stepmom, and Krippendorf’s Tribe? It bears repeating: Krippendorf’S Tribe?...

All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century. Click here for a complete list of our essays. How to decide in the grand scheme of things which film year stands above all others? History gives us no clear methodology to unravel this thorny but extremely important question. Is it the year with the highest average score of movies? So a year that averages out to a B + might be the winner over a field strewn with B’s, despite a few A +’s. Or do a few masterpieces lift up a year so far that whatever else happened beyond those three or four films is of no consequence? Both measures are worthy, and the winner by either of those would certainly be a year not to be sneezed at. But I contend the only true measure of a year’s...

Love him or hate him, there’s no ignoring Russell Brand. The louche, shaggy-haired, former druggie/current author/actor/raconteur made his first impression with the American public as the fabulously named Aldous Snow in Nicholas Stoller’s “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” A slew of film roles followed, some promising, others less so (“Arthur,” anyone?). In the last couple of years, however, Brand has consciously moved away from the bad-boy image that defined his early career trajectory, moving towards a very public sort of political activism. In 2013, for instance, Brand encouraged British citizens to not vote and called for a “massive re-distribution of wealth,” although he was a bit hazy on exactly what that meant. He published a book titled "Revolution," and now Brand, ever the firestarter, has teamed up with director Michael Winterbottom (“24 Hour Party People,” “The Trip”) for “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” an incendiary comic documentary that looks...

You wouldn’t think a show like “Supernatural” would have anything in common with “Grey’s Anatomy” or “Weeds”. After all, they’re wildly different genres on different networks. Each of these shows did do one thing the same. Every single one of them killed a character played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
He’s the dad they love to kill, or, at least that’s what happened to both John Winchester and Judah Botwin. Even as a single guy with a thing for Scrabble, he didn’t fare so well, just ask Denny Duquette. Oh, wait. You can’t. They killed him, too. He became, for all intents and purposes, the best and most memorable Red Shirt on TV.
Foolishly, I thought maybe movies would make a difference. “Watchmen” and “Jonah Hex” both proved me wrong. He did stay alive through “Peace, Love, and Misunderstanding”, “Taking Woodstock,” “The Losers,” “P.S. I Love You...
