Eden Golan, Israel’s entrant for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, was booed during rehearsals Thursday, with the crowd in Malmö, Sweden, chanting “Free Palestine” during the singer’s performance.
Ahead of the Eurovision semifinal, Golan was performing her song “Hurricane” when sections of the crowd turned on her and the jeering began. In video clips posted to social media, audible boos can be heard during Golan’s rehearsal, with local media reporting that there were also political chants.

Outside the Eurovision venue in Malmö, a city long considered within Sweden as left-leaning with a rich history of protest, there have been ongoing demonstrations against Israel’s war in Gaza this week.

Robyn, Fever Ray, and First Aid Kit are among more than 1,000 Swedish artists who have called for Israel to be banned from the Eurovision 2024 song contest.
The musicians signed an open letter calling for Israel’s ban from the 2024 competition, which is currently scheduled to host its finale in Malmö, Sweden on May 11th. In addition to Robyn, First Aid Kit, and Fever Ray, other signatures came from fellow Swedish artists, dancers, producers, and songwriters, including Axel Boman, Refused, Viagra Boys, DJ Seinfeld, and Kite.
Addressing the European Broadcast Union (Ebu), the letter outlines the collective artists’ frustration with the decision to let Israel compete in light of the ongoing war in Gaza. “The fact that countries that place themselves above humanitarian law are welcomed to participate in international cultural events trivializes violations of international law and makes the suffering of the victims invisible,” the letter reads.

In October 1998, a blisteringly loud Swedish hardcore band called Refused released an album titled The Shape Of Punk To Come. Full of screamed call-to-arms lyrics, it was a brilliant, brink-of-the-millennium manifesto for what tomorrow could look like, imagining not just the strides the punk genre might soon take, but the ones society might be capable of, with a little resolve, a little invention. It quickly became tinged with tragedy: within a year of its release, punk experienced a major mainstream moment, with frat-party pop mutators of the genre such as Blink-182 taking over MTV. The shape of punk to come, as Refused predicted it, never came to pass, meaning today it exists as a glimpse into what could have been.

It is a rare thing when two things you love from two different worlds come together, it does not happen often and can lead to great anticipation. Anticipation was what I felt when I first heard that Elvis Costello was going to be working on an album with Philadelphia’s The Roots crew. Anticipation for what could be an amazing album from two acts who have the capability to produce incredible music but there is also the chance that this album could lead to something best forgotten.
Although as surprised as I was when I first heard of this collaboration it immediately made sense; Elvis certainly has a soulful sound within him and we know The Roots are no strangers to Rock and Roll (remember the Seed 2.0 from 2002 for example). The album is released on September the 17th on the legendary Jazz label Blue Note. The...
