With a third Sonic the Hedghog movie now in the works, Sega, the video game company behind the global hit, is now targeting other titles for adaptation.
Sega has partnered with Picturestart, the banner behind the recently released Am I Ok? and Sundance hit Cha Cha Real Smooth, to develop film adaptations of two of its 1990s video game titles, Space Channel 5 and Comix Zone.
Channel 5, a comedy/dance adaptation of the cult-classic 1999 dance game, will tell the story of a hapless fast-food worker who is recruited by a freedom reporter from the future to save the world from aliens using the one thing that unites all people on the planet: our love of silly viral dances.
That project is being written by Barry Battles and Nir Paniry. Battles wrote and directed The Baytown Outlaws, a 2012 crime comedy starring Billy Bob Thornton and Eva Longoria.

A total of 181 projects from 40 countries were submitted for consideration this year. Selected projects are listed in the table below.
Projects from South Korea and other parts of Asia captured the philosophy that lies deep within the framework of genre films by exploring a variety of topics, such as tradition and political/social conflict, gender identity, and class distinction. (Project Spotlight highlights projects from one Asian country each year; this year’s spotlight will be on South Korea.)
The judges for this year included Kini S. Kim, Kim Young, Jonathan Kim (CEO of Hanmac Culture Group), and Joyce Heeyoung Cho.

Over the years, we’ve had fairytale classics and classic fairytales told through the live-action format, but Sony and Amy Pascal are now on the verge of spearheading a new genre mash-up altogether.
From Cinderella to The Jungle Book to Bill Condon’s wildly successful Beauty and the Beast – last we reported, the latter had broken into Hollywood’s exclusive $1 billion club in the space of a month – Disney’s output of live-action remakes is only going to pick up steam in the coming years, what with Mulan, Cruella and The Lion King all gestating in various stages of development.
According to The Tracking Board, though, Sony and Amy Pascal are closing in on a six-figure deal to land Princesses, the Avengers-styled spec script that caught just about everyone’s attention four weeks ago. Negotiations are ongoing, but a separate report from Deadline does substantiate TB’s findings. Indeed, sources...

Spec, which got a lot of interest around town, is written by Nir Paniry and Heidi Sherman Grey did a rewrite. The film’s premise is likened to The Avengers, with all the classic princesses as the heroines. Paniry is repped by Paradigm, Good-Fear Management and attorney Jeff Frankel, while Sherman Grey…...

Live-action fairytales are all the rage in Hollywood (see: Beauty and the Beast), but what about live-action fairytales that enter a new genre altogether?
Well, if a new report collated by The Tracking Board is to be believed, Princesses could go on to become the answer. Hatched by screenwriter Nir Paniry (Extracted), the project only has a spec script to its name at the moment, but TB claims the treatment is being shopped to studios near and far – Disney included.
The elevator pitch is a “female-driven Avengers featuring classic fairy tale princesses,” and though it’s unclear which characters will feature – it’ll largely depend on where the project lands, essentially – we understand Joachim Ronning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) is currently attached at the helm, with Lawrence Grey (Lights Out, Last Vegas) involved in a producing capacity.

A bunch of Princesses are set to do battle in a new Avengers-esque movie...
A new report suggests studios are battling it out over a script for a new project called Princesses. This is a film that’d see a whole bunch of fairy tale princesses coming together in an Avengers-style team-up. What’s more, this isn’t a Disney project either.
Instead, the screenplay is the work of Nir Paniry, and already attached to direct is Joachim Ronning, who has co-helmed the upcoming Pirates Of The Caribbean 5.
It’s unclear as of yet which Princesses are involved in the story, but given that they’re likely to be all in the public domain, there are no rights issues to contend with here. Obviously, if Disney is the studio that wins out in the aforementioned bidding war for the film, we’d expect the Princess characters...

Gee, let’s enter the mind of serial killer! Cause, you know, that worked out so well for Jennifer Lopez in “The Cell”. Nir Paniry’s “Extracted”, which hits VOD and selected theaters tomorrow, is working with a tad smaller budget than the Lopez film, or Nolan’s “Inception”, which it also has more than a little resemblance to. Still, it looks pretty interesting if you’re in a mood for a little mind-screw and don’t mind the lack of big-budget Hollywood gloss. A scientist invents a technique to enter people’s memories deep within their subconscious when their mind is at its most vulnerable state. When he is tasked with entering a convicted criminal’s mind to see whether he committed murder, he is faced with his most dangerous and risky memory extraction ever. Starring Sasha Roiz, Jenny Mollen, and Dominic Bogart. Get extracted this July 26th, 2013.

This summer has seen cities demolished, landmarks destroyed and monsters rising out of the ocean, proving that Hollywood knows how to find massive backdrops for their blockbuster spectacles. But filmmakers of late have found an unlikelier location for thrills: the mind. Christopher Nolan dove deep with "Inception," Shane Carruth played in that territory with "Upstream Color" and even Pixar will delve into that area with 2015's "The Inside Out." Now, another film is also using the brain to spur some interesting narrative twists. Filmmaker Nir Paniry's "Extracted" stars Sasha Roiz, Jenny Mollen, Dominic Bogart and Richard Riehle and tells the story of a scientist who invents a technique to enter people's memories, and is tasked with entering a convicted criminal's mind to see whether he committed murder. Of course, he gets much more than he bargained for. In this exclusive clip, we see our characters preparing just as the...

Extracted played at SXSW 2012 but isn’t getting its UK release until September this year, quite some delay by any standard. The new trailer which is over at Yahoo looks to have some interesting elements to it, in its tale of a man (Sash Roiz) who develops the technology to not only access your own memories, but also the memories of others. He gets drawn into the memories of a suspected killer in order to get to the truth but finds himself stuck.
This looks to be playing on Inception’s ideas of reality, layers and perception, although it seems to lack the style or clarity of Nolan’s rightly lauded blockbuster. The cast list reads like a “who?” rather than a who’s who, but that’s not necessarily a reason to write it off. Big name stars are no guarantee of quality or success, though the extremely limited...

You don't need to set something in space, or have aliens invading the planet, or lots of grand special effects, to make a science fiction story. The final frontier is perhaps not space, but the human mind, about which we still know next to nothing. Its exploration and visualization have been explored in many films, and Nir Paniry's Extracted, is a fairly solid entry into this canon. While it grounds itself in simplicity and straight-forward psychology, it misses some great opportunities for dramatic content.Brilliant scientist Tom (Sasha Roiz) has invented a machine that allows a person to enter the mind of another and walk around in their memories. He has meant his invention to be used in trauma therapy, but the funds aren't forthcoming. That...

SXSW 2012 film review
complete coverage of SXSW Film 2012
Extracted
Director & Screenwriter: Nir Paniry
A scientist is trapped in the memories of a criminal and must solve a crime in order to get back home to his family.
Cast: Sasha Roiz, Dominic Bogart, Jenny Mollen, Nick Jameson, Brad Culver
(World Premiere)
Film Synopsis (from SXSW.com)
Who’S It For?: Fans who are perfectly satisfied by science fiction television shows.
Overall
Extracted has a concept that is perfectly sexy for the lower standards of a cable TV series. With its simple story and lack of magnetic tension, it’s a reminder of the lower attention span asked for by most TV shows compared to any theatrical experience. Most TV shows (especially the ones that look like Extracted) feel like they’re meant to amuse viewers in-between commercial breaks. Viewers can move about their rooms while full episodes play out.

Austin, Texas — Although the South by Southwest Music Festival is just getting started, the film portion of the annual music, arts and interactive gathering in Austin, Texas, is coming to an end. It was too short a trip for our tastes, but we were able to cram in an awful lot of film coverage during our time within the city limits. Before we get to the highlights from SXSW Film Fest '12, here's a compilation of our interviewees' humorous commentary regarding the best and worst things about SXSW.
"The great thing about SXSW is the proliferation of beautiful young men all over the city," deadpanned Nick Offerman. "Now that the sun's out we're going to be seeing some shirts come off. This is a modern film we've made,...

In which a review begs to open with a deep-seeming quote about memory – its price, its collapse, its malleability, its importance, something about Mark Twain – and fails utterly. Director and co-writer Nir Paniry attempts something similar with his Extracted. The film follows Sasha Roiz as Tom, an inventor who has crafted a machine that is able to plug into a person’s memory and allow them to experience it as if it was currently happening, all while processing those memories into video capture. Unsurprisingly enough, Tom’s invention doesn’t quite work as planned, and he’s plunged into the depths of another person’s memory – except the memories he’s found are bad ones, and he’s trapped inside of them. Though Tom creates his machine with the hope of helping people work through their past issues, when his apparent manager comes to him with an interested buyer who plans on using it for something very...

Nir Paniry's Extracted, playing at SXSW, is a classic case on how indie science fiction works. Focusing more on narrative and character than blockbuster explosions or motion captured creatures, Paniry wraps his story tightly around its central premise and leaves little fat around the meat. Extracted moves with a purpose, setting up the characters and conflict quickly so that there's plenty of room for the second and third acts to breath. The non-linear structure combined with the vast amount of time within which the story takes place create a scope that no amount of computer generated, alien landscapes could achieve. To give you an idea of what it's about: A scientist invents a way to look into someone's memories, to find those hidden moments we keep locked in our brains and travel through them, experience them first-hand along with the subject. The inventor of the project finds himself in...

SXSW starts tomorrow, hotels and airfares were sold out long ago, and Austin’s data networks are already trembling. I’ll be there, and here are 20 films and other things that I’m looking forward to catching.
1. Tchoupitoulas. Bill and Turner Ross won Best Documentary at SXSW in 2009 with their doc, 45365. Their new film, Tchoupitoulas (pictured), promises to be a similarly beguiling exploration of time and place. It is about, in the words of the filmmakers, “three kids, New Orleans at night, and Music,” and it’s produced by the founding members of Court 13, whose Beasts of the Southern Wild was Sundance’s most exciting discovery this year.
2. The Sheik and I. Note to politically sensitive Middle Eastern art fairs: you don’t commission a cinematic provocateur like Caveh Zahedi to make a film about “art as a subversive act” if you can’t handle the consequences. One did, and...

Thoughts by Tsr: Selling a high concept sci-fi film like this is hard enough. Selling one with no notable stars or filmmakers is a whole different level. Sometimes you end up with a masterpiece like Primer, but more often than not it ends up being forgettable. I’m not saying Extracted needs to be as good as Primer – very few things are – but if it lives up to this quality trailer, it might be a film (and filmmaker) to keep an eye on when it bows at SXSW next month.
I’m not familiar with any of the main cast other than Sasha Roiz, but they all seem to be doing solid work – a few rough moments from Dominic Bogart aside. It also looks to be a fairly well-made film,...

Attendees of South by Southwest 2012 are in for a treat. 130 feature films will screen at the Austin, Texas festival taking place March 9-17. Among them are 65 World Premieres, 17 North American Premieres and 10 U.S. Premieres. The organization already announced [1] Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon's The Cabin in the Woods would open the festival (the movie is phenomenal [2]) and today the majority of the remaining line up has been revealed. One of the highlights is the unbelievably smart and hilarious 21 Jump Street, directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller. Both of those are World Premieres. Other highlights include The Hunter, Killer Joe, The Babymakers, frankie goes boom, God Bless America, The Imposter, The Raid, Bernie and Casa de mi Padre just to name a few. After the jump, read descriptions of all the films that have been announced so far. Before I copy and paste the rest of the list, a few minor notes.
