Mary Elizabeth Winstead is the latest star to go all John Wick on everyone in the room for her new film “Kate,” and even her partner in crime can see she’s a “total killer babe.”
Winstead in “Kate” plays an assassin in Tokyo on what is to be her last job to take down the Yakuza kingpin. She finds that she’s been poisoned and now has less than 24 hours to live. In that time she locates a young Japanese girl who can help her track down her mark and figure out who set her up to die.
“Kate, you’re like that person in a nightmare, take no s— from no dudes, you’re scary,” the girl played by newcomer Miku Martineau says in the trailer. She even at one point threatens some mobsters by saying that even with 20 of them, they’re all about to die, and “you’re outnumbered.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead has already showed that she’s more than capable of leading an action movie, thanks to her supporting role as Huntress in the DC Comics tentpole “Birds of Prey,” and now she’s getting the star vehicle she deserves with Netflix’s ticking-clock assassin thriller “Kate.” Winstead stars in the eponymous role opposite Woody Harrelson. The movie was helmed by French director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, perhaps best known to U.S. audiences for directing the “Snow White and the Hunstman” sequel “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.”
The official synopsis for “Kate” from Netflix reads: “Meticulous and preternaturally skilled, Kate is the perfect specimen of a finely tuned assassin at the height of her game. But when she uncharacteristically blows an assignment targeting a member of the yakuza in Tokyo, she quickly discovers she’s been poisoned, a brutally slow execution that gives her less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her killers.

"Kate, you're like that person in that nightmare - take no sh*t from no dudes." Netflix has unveiled the first official trailer for a new action movie called Kate, the latest feature made by the VFX supervisor-turned-director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who last directed the sequel The Huntsman: Winter's War. There’s no time for mercy. After she's poisoned, a ruthless criminal operative has less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her enemies and in the process forms an unexpected bond with the daughter of one of her past victims. This seems like a killer action concept mashing up Kill Bill and Jolt with Gunpowder Milkshake, but with Mary Elizabeth Winstead starring as the action badass Kate in this one. In addition to Mew, the impressive full cast also includes Tadanobu Asano, Miyavi, Michiel Huisman, plus Jun Kunimura and Woody Harrelson, and introducing Miku Martineau. The best thing about this is that it's set in Japan.

A global conflict that has yielded global stories, World War II continues to be the basis for films that challenge our perceptions. “Anthropoid” uncovers an episode from before the fighting stopped, focusing on the attempt to assassinate high-ranking SS General Reinhard Heydrich. Writer/Director Sean Ellis uses the true-life mission as a backdrop for a talented ensemble, including Cillian Murphy, Jamie Dornan and Toby Jones.

Hollywood is a whirring machine of marketing, it churns out movies with an expectation of them being hits and an aim of winning awards. I remember watching the first trailer to Unbroken and using the words “Oscar-bait” with its slick trailer and inspirational patriotic story. I don’t see this as a bad thing that is how the movie industry works. When it weakens the impact of the movie though, that is when the focus maybe should have been more on impact and not the art of making a “safe” movie.

Angelina Jolie doesn't mind a little (or a lot) of rain!
While directing her film Unbroken, Jolie gets caught in a quick downpour while ironically talking about the struggles of filming in this exclusive clip.
"It has not been the easiest shoot. It's a little difficult!" says Jolie. "The weather does not always agree with you, but you get through it."
The Academy Award winning actress’ film follows the true, inspirational story of Olympian and war hero Louis Zamperini, who survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash during World War II – only to be caught by the Japanese navy and sent to a series of prisoner-of-war camps.

I too found Unbroken to be an outstanding film. Directed by Angelina Jolie, Unbroken was the inspiring true story of Olympic winning medalist, Louis Zamperini, who went on to serve during World War and went through a string of unbelievable hardships. Unbroken opened with an incredibly strong action scene and as the story unfolded, Jolie gave us flashbacks of Louis’ childhood and upbringing. It is a bit formulaic in the sense that it follows pretty much the same conventions as most biopics have done in the past, but that old-fashioned approach worked best for this material. Even though you know the Liberator crew is going to crash, you can’t help but feel the sorrow of the loss...

For the first time since 1998, all twenty of the acting nominees competing at this year's Oscars ceremony will be white. For the first time since 2000, the Best Picture contenders will be exclusively stories about men.
This matters. There will always be those eager to dismiss criticism of the Academy and its practices with some variation on the phrase "Who cares about the Oscars anyway?" The answer is: the entire film industry. The Oscars impact filmmaking at every level, and pretending otherwise is wishful thinking. They affect who gets hired and how much they get paid. They affect what kinds of films get financed and distributed. And they affect what kinds of stories are seen as important.
Going by this year's nominations, the stories Hollywood sees as important are those of white men. Yes, the critically beloved Martin Luther King biopic Selma made it into the Best Picture field, but judging...

The countdown to the Oscars is less than 24 hours away.
While some of the presumed nominees, and the precursors, seemed like a done deal in the fall, Oscar watchers will know for sure on Thursday morning when the nominations for the 87th Academy Awards are announced.
Will the guilds inclusion of American Sniper and perceived snubs that came with the lack of BAFTA, Directors Guild and Producers Guild nominations for Selma make any difference? What nominations will come out of left field?
The Academy expanded the Best Picture category for a possible 10 nominees with the intention of including big box-office hits that would help the show’s TV ratings. However, this year the race is dominated by specialty and independent labels with Gone Girl being the only contender with blockbuster status.

What a difference four months, and some good campaigning, makes.
When “Nightcrawler” and “Cake” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival back in September, the former movie seemed too dark and creepy and the latter too small to figure in the Oscar race. By all accounts, Angelina Jolie's Unbroken is a rather brutal piece of cinema - which isn't exactly too surprising given the incredible challenges that faced World War II hero Louis Zamperini during his time in a Japanese prison camp. Given the harshness of the film, it shouldn't be surprising that there was an emotional toll behind the making of the movie as well, but what you may not know is that one scene in particular was so hard to film that it actually resulted in star Jack O'Connell passing out and his co-star Takamasa Ishihara (a.k.a. Miyavi) vomiting. Spoiler Warning: The rest of this article contains major spoilers about the ending of Angelina Jolie's Unbroken. If you haven't seen the film, and wish not to have it ruined for you, please click over to another one of our wonderful articles. In the climax of Unbroken, Zamperini...

Pete Hammond reports, "Among the Hollywood notables who passed in 2014 is Louis Zamperini, who only recently became relevant to movie audiences with the release of his life story 'Unbroken,' the Angelina Jolie-directed Universal Pictures film which stars Jack O'Connell and Takamasa Ishihara. Zamperini, who first made a movie deal for his remarkable life story 57 years ago, didn’t live long enough to see 'Unbroken' gross over $51 million domestic since its Christmas Day release. He died July 3 at age 97, but not before being shown a rough assemblage by its director. On a day when it is worth reflecting on great lives lived, 'Unbroken' producer Matt Baer guides us through the long struggle to bring Zamperini’s life to the screen, and how the subject’s unwavering persevering spirit extended well beyond a Pow camp in WWII Japan." Wait! Just hold on a second... Before you rush off to the list and then the comments to get mad at me for the placement of these movies and "How dare you!" etc, etc... Remember, these are movies I consider disappointments for one reason or another, reasoning I set out to explain with each entry. Most often this has to do with expectations, whether it be because of the director, screenwriters, star, subject matter, what have you... This is never a fair position for a movie to be placed in, but it's the fact of the matter and I think this is a list far more interesting than the "Worst Movies of 2014" and, in some ways, perhaps even my "Top Ten Movies of 2014". With that out of the way, let's scroll through the ten films I consider to be the most disappointing of the year, six of which were on...

“The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies” held off a strong challenge from Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken” and the record-breaking debut of Disney’s musical “Out of the Woods” to triumph for the second straight week as the holiday box office boomed.
Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth epic brought in $55 million since Christmas Day to hold off Universal’s Louis Zamperini biopic, which has rung up more than $47 million since Thursday, and “Out of the Woods,” which posted the biggest opening ever for a movie adapted from a Broadway musical with $46 million, topping 2008’s “Mama Mia.”

A few months ago the pared, gritty World War II tank picture Fury, led with muted intensity by Brad Pitt, caused little stir though it was a modest, hard-won victory in an old genre. It was also a far more involving trawl through war hell than the miscast, timid Unbroken. We have served countless tours through combat documents, all that history on film, it comes as a surprise then that director Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken is the first time the courageous feats of Louis Zamperini have been given their big screen due. So many gripping incidents to cull from Laura Hillenbrand’s bestselling account of Zamperini’s life of endurance trials, tortures, and perseverance; an adapted screenplay with input from wordsmiths Ethan and Joel Coen: a perfect cinematic blueprint.
And that is what the end product resembles: a blueprint of unfortunate events outlined with little passion other than the...

First of all: Jack O’Connell. This guy is the most exciting young actor to break out in years. He’s been around British TV for a while, but his recent one-two feature-film punch of Starred Up and ’71 (the latter of which will open in the U.S. in February 2015) put him in the not-to-be-ignored list. He’s a chameleon onscreen, all but unrecognizable from one role to another: you’d be hard-pressed to see either the brash, already hardened Londoner teen felon of Starred Up or the earnest, terrified young British soldier of ’71 in...

Run Rabbit Run: Jolie’s Grimly Serious Pow Reenactment
Beautifully, if sometimes too glossily mounted, Angelina Jolie’s sophomore effort as a director, Unbroken, is too poker faced to enjoy either as a dramatic motion picture or a document of an excruciating, unnecessary experience. That’s not to say there isn’t untoward torture and humans behaving poorly towards one another, but the film, based on Laura Hillenbrand’s book about the WWII experience of Olympic runner Louis Zamperini, collapses upon itself as merely an incredibly well-intentioned portrait of human resilience. It seems rather untoward to write the film off as dull or uninspiring, and while it certainly has patches that could be described as such, Jolie, directing from a script written by the Coen brothers and Richard Lagravenese, has simply made a very dry, straightforward film about a man whose experiences as a captive of the Japanese army were...

Angelina Jolie Makes Two Stars in 'Unbroken': We Talk to Jack O'Connell and Miyavi (Exclusive Video)
"Unbroken" is one of those movies that couldn't get made until a powerful star with clout convinced a studio she could pull it off. Jolie made the Louis Zamperini story immortalized by Laura Hillenbrand her second movie and Universal backed it at $65 million: modest for a period war film with scenes in the air, on the water, and in a Japanese prison camp. Jolie was able to lure the top artists in Hollywood to support her cause, from cinematographer Roger Deakins to editors Tim Squyre ("Life of Pi") and William Goldenberg ("Argo"). The result is a handsome well-crafted movie that is admirable for any sophomore filmmaker. Is it also earnest, old-fashioned and straight-forward? Yes. Reviews are mixed enough to put a taint on Universal's Oscar campaign. O'Connell and Miyavi talk about what it took to film the intense climax of the film, when The Bird threatens to kill Zamperini if...
