PinkPantheress is talking about the time she produced a beat for a friend and tried to make it “as Kaytranada-inspired as possible.” It’s a sweet story, especially since the person she’s telling it to is Kaytranada himself.
“I want to hear it, I want to see how it turned out,” he responds.
PinkPantheress quickly shuts down the idea: “It’s fucking terrible.” Then they both break into laughter.

In October 2019, Coodie, a former stand-up comedian-turned-music video and documentary director known only by one name, brought an overstuffed duffel bag to his big meeting with Time Studios in New York. Executives sitting in for his movie pitch — a look at the life and career of rapper Kanye West, complete with an intense archive of unseen footage spanning more than two decades — assumed he had come from the gym.
“I dumped the bag out right there on the table,” he says. “When they saw the pile of mini-dv tapes, they greenlit it.” To suggest that Coodie and his longtime creative partner and co-director Chike Ozah were finally getting their shot wouldn’t be quite accurate. Their ride-along on the personal history of one of the most celebrated rappers and polarizing celebrities of our time was always going to find its way to audiences. In 2019, a documentary about the making of 2 Chainz’ Rap or Go to the League was released to the rap public. The documentary features LeBron James as a faux A&r guy, directing Tity Boi on how many tracks he should put on the record. LeBron talks to Chainz about his idea of releasing a deluxe version of the album two weeks later as if he invented fire. “Thank you for taking this ride with me. Here’s two more.” It was hilarious, goofy, and completely in earnest: LeBron was doing...

Questlove was skeptical. In early 2019, the Roots’ drummer was approached by two Hollywood producers who claimed to have 45 hours of footage from a long-forgotten music festival in Harlem that had included performances from Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly and the Family Stone, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, and more. Questlove, who’s renowned for his encyclopedic knowledge of music history, had never heard of the event. He had, however, become used to fellow crate-digging obsessives trying to one-up him with dubious historical tidbits.

Vic Mensa performed a pair of songs from his upcoming EP, I Tape, with Wyclef Jean and Peter CottonTale on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Thursday, February 25th.
The performance was staged in a large warehouse space and began with Mensa and Jean performing “Shelter” while they and a group of men wearing prison uniforms and hoods lay on the ground. Over the course of the performance, the men slowly sat up, and when Mensa switched over to the fiery “Fr33dom” everyone had risen and coalesced into a euphoric mosh pit.

Earlier this year, singer-songwriter-producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds — known for writing massive hits for Toni Braxton, TLC, and Boyz II Men — received a call from P. Diddy.
Diddy’s job was to convince Edmonds to face off against Teddy Riley on an Instagram-based rap battle. And he didn’t mince words. “He said, ‘Face, fuck that shy shit,'” Edmonds recalls. “‘Go do this.'”
Edmonds agreed. Though he was reluctant before Diddy’s blunt persuasion, his back-and-forth with Riley in the Instagram battle — a musical competition, called Verzuz, in which writers,...

For anyone growing up in the 1970s or Eighties, the ensemble funk of Kool & the Gang — whose co-founder and chief songwriter Ronald “Khalis” Bell died on Wednesday at age 68 — was irresistible and inescapable. The group released a platinum- or gold-certified album every year between 1979 and 1984, in addition to launching a series of immaculately arranged, eminently danceable Top 40 hits that made their way to the ears of a young Mark Ronson.
As Ronson developed into a DJ-producer-multi-instrumentalist steeped in soul, funk, and hip-hop, he acquired an intense appreciation for Bell’s group,...

Lush yet still head-rattling, simple but deceptively complex, horny and consensual: There are few songs in existence better than “Back That Azz Up.” Juvenile’s 1999 song has it all — the New Orleans rapper kindly requesting his paramour “back that ass up” instead of demanding it, a blistering Lil Wayne feature, and, just as importantly, a galaxy-rich Mannie Fresh beat. Nevertheless, deep in the comment sections of Instagram Live, a cavalcade of adults (many of them celebrities) acted like a cheerleading section as they demanded Scott Storch play “Still D.R.

Until it arrived on Thursday night in the midst of a pandemic, almost no one could assert one way or another whether Jay Electronica‘s album was actually going to appear. He — and his label, Jay Z’s Roc Nation — had stoked the fires, and rumors abounded, including that this would be a joint project with Jay Z. But next to no confirmable details emerged until Electronica himself shared a tracklist. Even then, it was hard to be sure that the album was real, and for good reason: Everyone’s been waiting for a while.

In the latest installment of Rolling Stone’s “The First Time,” he cites Kanye West and producer Just Blaze as inspirations for his distinct style after hearing them sample R&b and soul records in hip-hop songs. “I was like, ‘Maybe I could sample old reggae or [Los] Rakas type of songs and give them an updated bop to it’ …that was about 2005.”

If “Rapture,” the latest Netflix documentary series, proves anything, it’s that no two people in the world of hip-hop are alike. As much as the industry around them may chase what works trying to replicate that success, or as much as a consolidated business makes individuality more and more difficult, the more distinct artists still make for the most compelling figures. Getting help from observant sets of eyes, “Rapture” is an attempt to show what a group of eight creators each bring to the world of music.
By natural personality or careful choices in the public eye, rappers like T.I., Logic, 2 Chainz, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, G-Eazy, and producers like Just Blaze have reached the point where they’ve each cultivated an image. “It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary N.Y. rap duo Mobb Deep,” a Mobb Deep representative wrote in a statement to Xxl.
“Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth.

Earlier this year, El-p and Killer Mike teased that they were remixing their fantastic album Run the Jewels 2 with feline sounds, essentially creating the world's first cat-rap masterpiece. A lot of people obviously thought they were joking, since remixing an entire album with cat noises would be an arduous process, as well as a bizarre way to spend one's time. Well, we were wrong: You can download Meow the Jewels here. I, for one, welcome our feline overlords. Here is the track listing: 1. Meowpurrdy [ft. First potato salad, now an album made entirely of cat sounds: The ideas behind high-profile crowdfunding projects are sounding more and more like a game of Mad Libs. Some background: Killer Mike and El-p, who make music together as the hip-hop duo Run the Jewels, joked in September about releasing a special edition of their next album that replaces all their beats with cat sounds. Then a Kickstarter user created a campaign to turn the joke into a reality. Soon, musicians like Zola Jesus, Boots, Just Blaze, and more clambered to contribute to Meow the Jewels. In the documentary, "What Difference Does It Make," director Ralf Schmerberg gives the audience an intricate look at the way music is made when new artists are able to meet the artists that inspire them in a different city every year. In 2013, the summit was held at the Red Bull Music Academy, and entertained notable guests such as ambient music pioneer Brian Eno, Erykah Badu, hip-hop producer Just Blaze, and Q-tip of A Tribe Called Quest fame, among many others. Beyond being another documentary about music, this piece. which marks the Red Bull Music Academy's 15th anniversary, looks to subvert its viewers into a more abstract way of looking at how music is made, putting emphasis on the mental and emotional state that musicians are subject to when creating. In an ever-evolving musical landscape, where "Amazing Grace" can be turned into an electro dance track, "What Difference Does It Make" argues that,...

One is a veteran hip-hop producer who helped living legends like Jay Z keep their groove. The other is a 24-year-old who has been making music for about two years and somehow happened to land a song with next to no lyrics atop the Billboard Hot 100. An unlikely pairing, Just Blaze (behind Jay's "Public Service Announcement," Fabolous' "Breathe,' etc.) and Baauer (of "Harlem Shake" fame) linked up for an epic tour that resulted in "Higher," one of the genre-defining tracks in the still-nascent subculture on the border between hip-hop and electronic dance music.
It's that song, first dropped online six months ago and now over 1.7 million streams strong, which received a full-throated commercial release this week and is the backdrop for a blockbuster video directed scene favorite Nabil. Easily one of this year's most hotly anticipated titles, "GTA V," is coming to PS3 and Xbox 360 on September 17, but not the PC. As disgruntled PC gamers love reminding everyone, especially whenever a new batch of screenshots or a new trailer surfaces.
Thankfully, the "GTA 4" modding community is hard at work, as always, to make part four look and feel as much like part five as possible, and thus help make the wait tolerable (there will be a PC version of "V," though it'll probably be just as late to the party as its predecessors).

Ubisoft gets a little silly with the upcoming stealth action game, adding the multi-talented comedienne and actress as a potential victim.
The "Archer" voice actress makes an appearance in November's "Watch_Dogs" as a potential victim who masked vigilante Aiden Pierce can potentially save. Tyler also joined the game's development team at San Diego Comic-Con onstage to talk about questions of privacy and taking dudes down with super hacking abilities.
It's another "It's-a me, Mario" moment for the publisher, who included the little Nintendo homage in "Assassin's Creed II." It's just right there, you're wandering around, and an Italian dude tells you he's-a Mario. Weird and kind of funny. Ubisoft, if you really want to impress me, though, make Lana Kane a skin for "Watch_Dogs" with a full voice pack.*

A low-quality version of Daft Punk's highly anticipated comeback album "Random Access Memories" leaked yesterday, prompting a rash of excited tweets and a flurry of downloads. Shortly thereafter, a free (and authorized) stream of the album hit iTunes.
As the new songs permeate culture (look for plenty of discussion of the epic "Giorgio by Moroder" and expect to hear tunes like "Lose Yourself to Dance" and "Doin' It Right" blasting from car windows near you), take a moment to acquire some Daft Punk trivia to regale your friends with. NME posted a handy slideshow of 30 facts about Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, and we've picked a few to share here. For the full list, head over to NME.
Music is in their blood. Bangalter's father, Daniel Vangarde, wrote and produced "D.I.S.Co." for Ottawan and "Cuba" for the Gibson brothers.

News that Snoop Dogg had taken a smoker's sabbatical from West Coast party rap was met with a healthy skepticism, bemusement and even derision when it first started making its way around the web last summer. But now, Snoop has settled into his newest incarnation: Snoop Lion, a peace-loving, violence-hating reggae artist who claims to be a descendent of Bob Marley.
His transformation was the subject of "Reincarnated," a Vice documentary that traced the 41-year-old rapper's trip to Jamaica and subsequent cultural baptism. The film offers a fresh look at Snoop, best known for hits like "Ain't No Fun" and "Drop It Like It's Hot," and makes up what it may lack in cohesion with tender glimpses at a man who appears to be pondering his place in the world.
The result of said introspection is a reggae album produced by Major Lazer and also titled "Reincarnated." The record features songs like "No Guns Allowed,...

-- Kendrick Lamar, "good kid, m.A.A.d city" (Interscope Records)
Kendrick Lamar is an up-and-coming rapper hailing from Los Angeles with a reputation already built through the underground scene as one of hip-hop's best lyricists.
With the backing of Dr. Dre, the socially conscious emcee continues to enhance that stature on "good kid, m.A.A.d city," a cohesive album filled with classic gems. He takes his storytelling ability to a higher level on his major label debut, a follow-up to his 2011 independent release, "Section.80," that received positive reviews.
On his new offering, Lamar's rap cadences are finely in sync with the stellar production by Pharrell, Tha Bizness, Hit-Boy, Just Blaze and others. The album is an open book of soulful stories that are intertwined through entertaining and thought-provoking skits, with Lamar telling several compelling moments of his upbringing in Compton, the gritty city southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

So what does a #1 album get you? If you're Mac Miller, it gets you studio time with one of rap's most storied producers, Pharrell Williams. Less than a week after the Pittsburgh spitter's debut Blue Slide Park landed the #1 spot on the Billboard albums chart, Mac linked up with the Neptunes hitmaker in a Miami recording studio and got to work.
"He came down to Miami. He was like, 'Yo I want to do something,' " Pharrell told MTV News in an interview earlier this month. "He went in and again, just made like two really good records."

Real Spit: Now that Saigon has finally told his greatest story, the hard-nosed rap spitter has returned to bust more shots. After almost five years of delays, Giddy dropped his debut The Greatest Story Never Told in February 2011, and he's not letting up with Warning Shots 3: One Foot in the Grave, his newest mixtape released on January 24.
Hosted by multiplatinum producer Just Blaze, WS3 opens with a bang. "Bbb (Real N---as Never Die)" samples Buju Banton's 1992 reggae classic "Boom Bye Bye" and launches a full-scale attack on fashion-forward MCs, focusing his energy on street-bred raps instead. "I rather hear a n---a lying on firing glocks/ Than to have to hear a n---a rhyme about designer socks.

Despite all the critical and commercial acclaim Drake's Take Care has rightly earned, the Toronto Mc has remained relatively quiet when promoting the album. Relative in the sense that Thank Me Later's release was accompanied by the hoopla of in-store signings and a documentary.
That's not the only way the two projects differ. Where Tml featured a number of A-list hitmakers, from Kanye West to Swizz Beatz, the biggest name in Drake's sophomore effort's production credits is Just Blaze. The album certainly doesn't suffer from that lack of notoriety, however. In fact, it sounds more focused with the lesser-known T-Minus, and Drake's right-hand man Noah "40" Shebib stealing the show. Their efforts helped to make it more Drake's album — however introspective, weird and altogether refreshing that might be.

This is my list of my favourite Hip Hop albums of 2011. It’s neither the list of the albums that sold the best nor the list of the most anticipated albums of 2011. Just the ones that this 30 something Hip Hop fan enjoyed the most, the ones that I listened to the most, the ones that made me smile and in some rare cases even dance. Although some may call 2011 a disappointing year for Hip Hop I would actually say it was a positive year. There was plenty of good music out there you just had to look for it and that’s always been the case with most genres. A number of new artists came through with good albums and a number of older artists came back to the forefront with strong albums.
10. Phonte – Charity Starts At Home
I missed Little Brother this year so this album from Phonte was much needed and much appreciated.

While performing on Sunday night's American Music Awards, Drake had a moment. The Young Money Mc was in the middle of the second verse to his single "Headlines" when he switched up the lyrics to reflect the projected first-week success of his sophomore album, Take Care.
"If we talkin' bout the numbers/ Man, it look like 700, they know," Drake rapped in response to the Billboard prediction that he will debut atop the albums chart this week with as many as 700,000 copies sold. However, if you let Young Money head honcho Lil Wayne tell it, the numbers are not as important as the cultural impact.

Although Tc is officially slated to hit retail on November 15, the album has spawned numerous trending topics on Twitter and has dominated hip-hop's social conversation over the last 24 hours. It remains to be seen if there's truth to DJ Khaled and Drake's declaration that Rick Ross's upcoming album, God Forgives, I Don't, is a classic-in-the-making.
And while fans will have to wait until the December 13 release date to make that determination, on Tuesday night, they got a head-start after the Bawse dropped two promising singles. Freeway has quite a few gems in his catalog, one being the Jay-z and Beanie Sigel-assisted single "What We Do" from his 2003 debut, Philadelphia Freeway. The trio trade vivid verses filled with sarcastic regret over a Just Blaze-produced soul beat.
While the track remains a fan favorite, Free admitted on Wednesday's "RapFix Live" that he originally planned for the song to be a solo affair. Freeway recalled recording the track at Roc-a-Fella's Bassline Studios in New York City. On any given night, the entire Roc roster would be milling about the studio, and the bearded Mc often sought musical advice from his labelmates.
