Remember the first 10 minutes of “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” when Hushpuppy was just running around with sparklers and the music was blaring and you were profoundly moved for reasons you couldn’t quite understand? Well, Viktor Jakovleski’s “Brimstone & Glory” is essentially the feature-length adaptation of that feeling. Produced and scored by “Beasts” mastermind Benh Zeitlin, this euphoric documentary is a veritable orgy of lights and sounds, a pyroclastic symphony of explosions in the sky that makes you happy to be alive, even if you’re not entirely sure why.
Largely experiential, though laced with pearls of narration that pull it back from being quite as impressionistic as the likes of “Baraka” or “Leviathan,” “Brimstone & Glory” opens with a title card that gives us most of the context we’ll need for the hour that follows. Every year, the Mexican town of Tultepec holds a week-long celebration of San Juan de Dios,...

Sebastian Lelio’s “Disobedience” is a quiet, understated drama with one of the buzziest sex scenes of any movie this year. One a few high-profile acquisition titles at the Toronto International Film Festival, “Disobedience” quickly became known as “the movie where Rachel Weisz spits in Rachel McAdams’ mouth” shortly after its premiere. And while that scene doesn’t convey the strong performances and measured emotional journey at the movie’s core, it certainly leaves an impression.

One of the best documentaries to emerge from Hot Docs this year was Viktor Jakovleski’s “Brimstone & Glory,” which finds the director evoking the visual and aural sensations of “Samsara” and “Baraka” by taking a look at the National Pyrotechnic Festival in Tultepec, Mexio. More than than three quarters of Tultepec’s residents work in pyrotechnics, and each year the population comes together in celebration of San Juan de Dios for a larger-than-life fireworks festival.
The documentary counts “Beasts of the Southern Wild” director Benh Zeitlin as one of its producers. The Oscar nominee helped bring the project to life with his regular Court 13 collective and co-composed the original score with Dan Rohmer.
Oscilloscope is releasing ‘Brimstone & Glory’ in theaters on October 27. Watch the trailer below.

On the penultimate day of the 2017 Telluride Film Festival, 650 people crowded into the Palm Theater for a surefire commercial bet: “Battle of the Sexes,” Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’ crowd-pleasing throwback to the cross-gender 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, with Emma Stone and Steve Carrell in the lead roles. The movie does nothing groundbreaking, but delivers a respectable ode to a feminist hero and the media brouhaha surrounding her legacy. Before the screening even started, the real Billie Jean King waved to the audience onstage and received a standing ovation. The mood projected a near-certainty that “Battle of the Sexes” would make bank at the box office when Fox Searchlight released it in late September, and awards season momentum could follow.
That’s all well and good for “Battle of the Sexes,” and certainly not the worst kind of movie to stand a chance at gaining...

There are several pivotal moments in Pablo Larraín’s “Jackie,” but one truly epitomizes the director’s primary obsession. Days after she sat next to her husband as a bullet struck his brain, the bereaved Jacqueline Kennedy (Natalie Portman) peers out a tinted window. Even in the midst of tumultuous grief, she recognizes the need to solidify his legacy with an elaborate funeral march. She’s completing his story while keeping her own in the shadows, but in a single powerful moment, the two collide.
With the former First Lady’s reflection on the window, Larraín superimposes archival images of the crowds that showed up to salute their dead president. The intimate experiences of a single traumatized character collide with the public’s absorption of the mythology surrounding her. As viewers, we’re left to sort out the truth.
