Doctor Who writer Peter Harness is back in the word of science fiction for Apple TV+ drama Constellation, starring Noomi Rapace. Here’s the trailer.
Screenwriter Peter Harness is perhaps best known as a regular writer on the revived series of Doctor Who, where he was responsible for Kill The Moon, one of the more divisive episodes among the fandom. Now, Harness is back in the world of science fiction for eight part drama Constellation, starring Noomi Rapace.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Constellation stars Noomi Rapace as Jo — an astronaut who returns to Earth after a disaster in space — only to discover that key pieces of her life seem to be missing. The space adventure is an exploration of the dark edges of human psychology, and one woman’s desperate quest to expose the truth about the hidden history of space travel and recover all that she has lost.

This article contains spoilers for House of the Dragon season 1.
Adapting a book for television always involves making some changes to the source material, and even a multi-season TV show does not always have time for every character and subplot from a long book. But sometimes, the cutting of a character takes away something the story really needs, and in the case of House of the Dragon, we think that character is the court jester, Mushroom.
We can see why the writers chose to cut Mushroom from the show at first. The book House of the Dragon is based on, Fire & Blood, is a pretend-history. Its narrator is Archmaester Gyldayn, a scholar writing up a history of the Targaryen dynasty sometime shortly before the start of the action in A Game of Thrones. There have been a few fantasy novels written this way – Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell,...

About twenty-five years ago, the movie Hackers introduced the internet to the wider American audience.
“It’s wild to think that the internet has only been a part of the public consciousness for a few decades. When the movie Hackers hit theaters in September 1995, only 14 percent of Americans had access to the web, according to Pew Research, and the vast majority were on achingly slow dial-up. But the online revolution was just around the corner.”

Killer whales have been attacking boats near the Spanish waters, and it seems to be on purpose.
“Reports of orcas confronting boats have been coming in from sailors across southern Spain for the past two months. In some cases, the damage has been significant, with boats losing parts of their rudders. Some crew members have been wounded from the jolts. These do not appear to be accidental encounters.”

If you’re already a fan of Susanna Clarke’s alternate history novels that began with Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, you’ll already be more than a little familiar with the concepts that she is famous for. In summary, this is a world in which magic once existed and was lost over time, but through the mysterious capabilities of the titular gentlemen, it has begun to creep back into the world. In Osprey Games board game of the same name, the players each control a famous magician from the series, competing to do magic and expand their support among the elite.
If you’re not a fan of Susanna Clarke’s work and you like the idea of this game, then the first thing you should do is read the novels. I say this because everything in the board game adaptation of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell assumes that you will have.

Chandler Klang Smith's debut novel is unlike anything you've ever read. The Sky is Yours transcends the boundaries of genre, transporting the reader to a burnt-out dystopian future in which twin dragons circle the skies tormenting an urban metropolis, and a Jane Austen-esque heroine, a futuristic YouTube burnout, and a feral ingenue raised on a mountain of trash find themselves in a love triangle that threatens to tear the very city they live in apart. Here's the thing, though: as you travel through the action-adventure, coming-of-age, snarky-yet-sincere story, it's damn near impossible to pull yourself away.
Combining a handful of different narrative techniques that serve to flesh out the inner lives of the strikingly original characters, Smith's prose is conducive to a thoroughly obsessive-compulsive read, one that will leave you thinking about the world you just inhabited long after you turn the last page.

U.K. production company Mammoth Screen is planning a mini-series based on H.G. Wells' classic 1898 alien invasion story "War of the Worlds". Mammoth has reportedly secured funding in the U.K. and will soon actively seek out a company in the U.S. to be a co-producer.
Production isn't expected to take place until early 2017 as Paramount currently has the copyright privileges to the property - privileges that expire when the novel enters the public domain at the end of 2016.
Despite its popularity and several adaptations across various mediums, Wells' story has never had a straightforward TV adaptation to date. This will fill that niche, retaining the original's Victorian setting and time period.
Peter Harness, who adapted Susanna Clarke's "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" for TV this year and penned the recent acclaimed Zygon two-part story for "Doctor Who", will pen the script.

Night of Knives by Ian Cameron Esslemont Review
Huge fan of the everything Malazan. I am of the opinion that Steven Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen is the single finest fantasy series this or any other world has ever seen, surpassing my past and still very much loved favorites by George R. R. Martin, Roger Zelazny, Tolkien, and Patricia McKillip (because her Riddle of the Stars mesmerized me as a child.)
Later, fans of Erikson’s series would get chapters and tales from Ian Cameron Esslemont, Erikson’s co-creator of the setting. I think it’s fair to say these efforts were met with mixed reactions. The first of Esslemont’s entries was Night of Knives, which no doubt is meant to echo our own history’s Night of the Long Knives, and details the literal ascension of Kellanved and Dancer.

While Sony Pictures and Working Title have been denying this for weeks, it looks like they have found a director for their grand reinvention of Oliver!, the musical with music and lyrics by Lionel Bart based on the Charles Dickens novel. It’s Toby Haynes, who just made a splash with the seven-part BBC One adaptation of Jonathan Strange & Mister Norrell, based on the Susanna Clarke novel. The studio and producer denied to me he had the offer or is negotiating, but it broke…...

★★★★☆ These days there is such a rich offering of TV dramas that it can be hard to know what to watch and what not to. It can be difficult for new dramas to grab our attention, especially in world where shows like True Detective and Game Of Thrones dominate our viewing time. The BBC, once a home to the best television drama on offer has waned in the enormous shadow of HBO in recent years. However, their latest show, a seven-part series based on Susanna Clarke's best-selling 2004 novel, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, is truly unmissable TV. Clarke produced a behemoth of a novel, richly weaving the complex history of English magic set during the Napoleonic Wars.

Looking for a good book recommendation? Our writers have a few unsung sci-fi, fantasy and horror gems up their sleeves...
Other people. What’s the point of them? They’re noisy and everywhere.
There is one thing they’re especially good at, however, and that’s recommending new stuff. In the spirit of that, we asked our writers to recommend great books that, for whatever reason, haven’t been surrounded by as much fuss and recognition as they deserve.
Nominations came in for personal favourites in fiction, non-fiction, children’s books and graphic novels, so we’ve divided them up into a series of features, the first of which is below, on great unsung sci-fi, fantasy, horror and thriller adult fiction.
Our hope is that you’ll demonstrate your worth as other people by carrying on the recommendations in the comments section below. Thanks in advance.

From its vertiginous position above his head, the camera dives past hermetic, white-wigged magician Mr. Norrell (Eddie Marsan), through the water held by a silver bowl, and into the nave of an ornate church. In the cold, greenish light, the diminutive sorcerer animates the structure's stone friezes for a society of skeptics—the first magic of its sort performed in England in three centuries, and the opening salvo in BBC America's disarming adaptation of Susanna Clarke's 2004 novel. By turns ghoulish, fanciful, and surprisingly funny, "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" conjures up a fleet-footed interpretation of magical realism, poised on the border between prophecies and politics. It's the best new show of the summer. Set in England at the time of the Napoleonic Wars—the transporting premiere, "The Friends of English Magic," opens in 1806—"Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" succeeds in layering the far-fetched with the lifelike, as if Hilary Mantel.

BBC One sought to restore magic to Sunday nights with its 7-part adaptation of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke's acclaimed novel of the fantastic.
But did the series - adapted by Doctor Who writer Peter Harness - put a spell on you, or were you immune to its charms?
Digital Spy wants your thoughts - was this a stirring or a staid adaptation of the book? What did it do right - and what did it do wrong?
Are you keen for the BBC to explore Clarke's world again? Harness told DS that he would "love to" be involved in a follow-up - but would you watch?
Clarke has spoken of plans for a quasi-sequel, following the characters of Childermass (Enzo Cilenti) and Vinculus (Paul Kaye). Would you watch a spinoff - or would you lose interest without Strange (Bertie Carvel) and Norrell (Eddie Marsan)?

Bertie Carvel shines, along with the rest of the cast, in this week’s captivating, madness-themed Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell…
This review contains spoilers.
1.5 Arabella
Forget Barb meters drily totting up television ratings, the true measure of a TV episode should be judged by the volume of a viewer’s involuntary wail when the end credits appear. By that system, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell registers off the scale. When the screen turned black at the close of tonight’s instalment, my neighbour knocked on the party wall to check I hadn’t done myself an injury.
As an adult, watching this series is the closest I’ve come to the childhood experience of being read a new and spell-binding bedtime book. In the joy of the anticipation, in the telling, and in the frustration of realising a chapter’s end has snuck up on you mid-tale; that’s just how it feels.

Trading Triwizard tournaments for tricorn hats and powerful wands for powdered wigs, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell makes its American broadcast debut this Saturday. The road from print to BBC One miniseries (with a one month delay in arriving on BBC America) has been long for Strange & Norrell and its decidedly proper spin on the fantasy genre. With a zoological expedition back into the world of Harry Potter due next year, and Lev Grossman’s arch The Magicians getting its own series shortly, we’ll soon be at no loss for witchcraft and wizardry stories that skew strongly traditional or deconstructionist. All the better for Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell that the adaptation arrive now, then, when its measured and peculiar brand of wonderment isn’t at constant risk of being upstaged.

The BBC’s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell isn't a silly, childish, Harry Potter rip-off. So why do people keep saying it is?
As described in a 1974 essay by author Ursula K. Le Guin, Americans are afraid of it, the French haven’t had it for centuries, Germans have a good deal of it, and the English “have it, and love it, and do it better than anyone else”.
That thing? A literary tradition of adult fantasy. Our national bookshelf (with thanks to Ireland, Scotland and Wales for the lend of Swift, Stoker, Lewis, Stevenson and more) is packed with the stuff, from epics to folklore, the Gothic and the satirists to the Romantics, Victorian moralists and Edwardian golden agers, to Tolkien and the twentieth-century conjurers, all the way up to today’s imaginative tale-spinners.

How is Lady Pole? Short answer: not great. Fortunately, the show she’s in continues to be brilliant…
This review contains spoilers.
1.2 How Is Lady Pole?
When it’s-going-to-be-over-too-soon anxiety creeps in even before the episode title has appeared, you know a TV drama is doing something right. And in its second instalment, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell does a great many things right. (One of which is making the squat, previously unwieldy-looking Susanna Clarke novel seem to glow luminously and whisper “Read me. Read me now” every time I come near the bookshelf. I’m holding out until after the finale, but resisting is not going to be easy.)
Chief of its achievements is the sheer irrefutability of its world. Not a sausage about its faerie realm, fleet of rain ships or enchanted-horse troop feels implausible.
You could put that down to the world-class magic worked by its VFX and...

We chat to Peter Harness, writer of Doctor Who and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, currently airing on Sunday nights on BBC One...
Writer Peter Harness is currently on a roll. After attracting praise for his work on Wallander, his Doctor Who episode Kill The Moon brought him to more mainstream attention. But it’s his current work which should propel him to the A-List of British writing talent, a place fully deserved. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, the 800+ page period fantasy novel, considered by many to be unadaptable, has debuted as a TV series on the BBC to rave reviews (not least on this site).
One of the adaptation's key strengths is the streamlined nature of the script, which still captures perfectly the world and characters created by novelist Susanna Clarke. For that, Perter Harness must earn the plaudits. Proving to be a very charming and clever guy, he took the...

I just watched last night’s debut episode of the BBC’s Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell — based on Susanna Clarke’s fabulous and sprawling historical fantasy novel [Amazon U.S.] [Amazon Canada] [Amazon U.K.] [iTunes U.S.] [iTunes Canada] [iTunes U.K.] — and I love it. I love the book: imagine if Jane Austen wrote Harry Potter, but instead of kids as its central characters it features fusty old academics, ambitious politicians, social climbers, and other unpleasant fellows. (Yes, most of the major players are men, alas.) This adaptation is visually fascinating: it’s not a pretty costume drama but something dirtier, nastier, and somehow itchy. No one’s clothes seem to fit well. Men’s wigs are forever askew. “Fashionable” parties are claustrophobic and loud. The streets of 1806 London are mucky. It’s all very grubby… which is brilliant. This is a story about people who don’t really fit in, and the two titular characters — the last magicians left in England to...

BBC One fantasy drama Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a marvel, from its cast to its magnificent world-building…
This review contains spoilers.
1.1 The Friends Of English Magic
If, like members of the fusty York Society Of Magicians, you needed proof that magic has been restored to England, that episode was it. Forget bringing half a hundred statues to life, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell has pulled off an even unlikelier feat: bringing quality grown-up fantasy to UK television.
Susanna Clarke’s source novel was a canny choice for the task. Its Regency setting plays to the BBC’s period drama strengths and grounds the seven-part series in a recognisable context for any viewers who might ordinarily run a mile at the word ‘faerie’.
Not that Marc Warren’s chilling Gentleman (the sinister being in the Liberace wig and Norman Lamont eyebrows who showed up towards the end of tonight’s episode...

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell has won rave reviews, countless awards and fantasy icon Neil Gaiman even called it "the finest English novel of the fantastic written in the last seventy years".
So even before one takes into account its 1000+ page count, you'd imagine that adapting Susanna Clarke's 2004 book for the screen would be an intimidating prospect. Not so, says Peter Harness, the writer who took on the task for BBC One's new seven-part series.
"I've never felt daunted by it," he says. "I just thought it would be such terrific fun to do, to spend 2 or 3 years in that world. It was a huge job - and a huge challenge - but I enjoyed it, and I think you can get through any challenge if you enjoy it, and you're working with good people.

Starting next Sunday on BBC One, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a genre-bending British drama worth getting very excited about...
What are some of the best British dramas of recent years? Here’s just a few. Wolf Hall, Utopia, Peaky Blinders, Broadchurch, Happy Valley, Luther, Doctor Who and In The Flesh. It's been said to death but remains the case: we truly are in a golden age of original British drama. But now you might just have to make room for a new favourite. I don’t think it’s hyperbolic to say that Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is the finest new drama that’s been on our screens this decade. In fact, if the first two episodes are anything to go by, it could go down as one of the best this century.
As an adaptation of Susanna Clarke’s epic genre-bending novel, it’s almost perfect. As a...

They can sure pack a lot into a one-minute trailer these days and this first glimpse at the BBC's adaptation of Susanna Clarke‘s novel "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" does exactly that. The BBC is tackling Susanna Clarke's dense and epic fantasy novel "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell" as a seven-part miniseries, one that will likely do a better job at adapting the stuffed narrative for the screen than a film ever could.
Set in early 19th century England, the story deals with the reclusive Mr Norrell (Eddie Marsan) who is enlisted in the government in the war against Napoleon. The series primarily deals with the the relationship and rivalry between Norell and Jonathan Strange, both of whom deal in magic.
Though there's been a few clips and super short teasers so far, the network has now revealed the official launch trailer for the show which you can see below. The first episode is slated to premiere sometime in May:...

See Eddie Marsan in action in this first look at BBC One's terrific-looking Jonathan Strange And Mr Norrell...
"Magic is not ended in England..."
...not now that the BBC has adapted Susanna Clarke's tremendous historical fantasy novel Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, it isn't.
We first heard news of this ambitious adaptation over a year ago, and it hasn't budged from our 'must-watch' list since then. The quality of Susanna Clarke's source material combined with the calibre of the creative team and cast will tell you why.
Peter Harness (Doctor Who, Wallander, Case Histories) has written the seven-part series, which was directed by Toby Haynes (Doctor Who, Sherlock, The Musketeers). In the two lead roles are Eddie Marsan as Mr Norrell, "quite a tolerable practical magician", and Bertie Carvel as Jonathan Strange, with support from Alice Englert, Charlotte Riley, Paul Kaye, Marc Warren and more.

After 650 show-stealing turns as Miss Trunchbull in Matilda the Musical, Bertie Carvel is about to star in Channel 4's new comedy drama Babylon. Though some of the Trunch's truculence remains…
