Teaching has proved to be a vital secondary skill in the development of many dancers' professional careers. It can be a valuable method of supplementing your income between performing jobs — both at the start of your career, when you're just beginning to build your reputation and résumé, and as you near the end of your performing tenure, as a way to stay employed in the profession. For midcareer dancers who may want to move into jobs as dance captains or assistant choreographers, strong teaching skills are essential. Even choreographers rely heavily on teaching gigs to try out new material, as well as to scope out dancers they're interested in hiring. If you're looking to expand your repertoire of teaching styles, pedagogical strategies, and choreographic or kinesiological information, there is still time to register for Dance Teacher magazine's summer conference, to be held Aug. 9-11 at New York City's Jacob K.
