Showrunners are the creative visionaries of a series.
They might not be the original creators, but they cover all aspects of the creative elements, evolve the show's vision, and decide where the story and character arcs will go.
They run the writing rooms, head the development, hire writers, and ensure actors are kept happy and that the budget is not exceeded.
Series are usually a collective effort, with writers giving their thoughts, but showrunners have the final say and are essential.
Where would the industry be without people like Shonda Rhimes, Matt and Ross Duffer (Stranger Things), and Ryan Murphy?
It would be mundane and repetitive.
Intelligent and prolific showrunners are the difference between a hit and a flop.
They set an unwavering tone for their ideas, and consistency is vital.
If the reason you fell in love with a series is altered or gone one day, then the connection created is absent,...

Game of Thrones creators met with George R. R. Martin for the first time in 2006 to discuss the possibility of making Martin’s best seller A Song of Ice and Fire into a series. Martin revealed that he was approached by other directors who wanted to make his work into a feature film. However, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss shared the writer’s desire for a series adaptation and even answered his questions about his novel.
Game of Thrones creators D. B. Weiss and David Benioff answered George R. R. Martin’s questions right to make the series happen
The creators’ answer to one question may have eventually made the epic fantasy series possible. While Martin did not reveal whether the creators answered it right at the time, they shook hands on the project right after that meeting and were in business with HBO.

Making a show in Westeros is no joke — there are dragons and battles, princes and princesses, gold coins and iron throne. Therefore, one can only imagine the production budget helmed by Game of Thrones. But what if we say that Taylor Sheridan surprisingly beat the HBO show with his Western spin-off 1923?
Taylor Sheridan in an interview with CBS News
While David Benioff and D.B Weiss’ Game of Thrones overall performed better than 1923, Taylor Sheridan significantly surpassed the show’s budget with his Western drama. Speaking with Deadline, the showrunner notified fans of the amount he sought for 1923, compared to the HBO show’s average budget per episode.

The HBO series Game of Thrones is deemed as another entry in the long list of TV series that captivated audiences for years. However, while fans have appreciated the show for its grandeur and mesmerizing storyline, the series finale turned out to be quite disappointing for most. And seemingly George R.R. Martin began dreading this very problem after season 5.

Leaving a trail of disappointment in their wake, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss curtailed a certain major arc which made the ending seem abrupt. This particular approach that the show followed after season 5, began worrying George R.R. Martin. The author’s representative, Paul Haas, thus opened up about Martin’s thoughts on his behalf.

When you hear that D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are behind a series, you sit up and take notice. The recent Netflix drama 3 Body Problem had all the suspense and drama we've come to expect from the pair, as a team of scientists and a detective investigate the strange deaths of scientists around the world.
Based on the novel The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin, the show scored 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and topped Netflix's global top 10 for 3 weeks. But with only 8 episodes, this uber-bingeable show has already come to an end for many fans.
The good news, a new K-drama landing on April 26th is the perfect show to stream if you loved 3 Body Problem and can't believe it hasn't been renewed for Season 2.
What would you do if there were only 200 days left until the apocalypse?
That is the question the citizens of Korea face in this heart-pounding show.

When John Bradley met with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss about their new series “3 Body Problem,” the first thing they told the “Game of Thrones” actor is that they’d written a role in the sci-fi mind-bender for him. Quite literally. “They said, ‘It’s as close to yourself as any character you’ll ever play,’” Bradley says. “It’s kind of a daunting prospect. It’s a bit like you’re going to see yourself drawn by one of those caricature artists on the street. I’m going to find out what these highly perceptive, very bright people think I am as a person.”
The character Benioff, Weiss and co-creator and co-showrunner Alexander Woo created for Bradley — Jack Rooney, part of the “Oxford Five” of college friends and scientists at the center of the series — may not, on its face, seem all that flattering. Jack is brash and blunt,...

An adaptation of Liu Cixin’s sci-fi trilogy, 3 Body Problem, is an ambitious project. However, Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were up to the challenge. The source material is dense enough to make for compelling television and the first season would prove to be a new hit for Netflix as the show cracked the Top 10 on the platform. The series has received generally positive reviews, but our own Alex Maidy didn’t exactly love it. “I found it very hard to engage with this story, these characters, and this series,” Maidy wrote. You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review Here.

3 Body Problem clocked another week atop Netflix’s TV charts — though it appears to have been a slow week for the streamer’s series.
The drama series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, as well as Alexander Woo, clocked just 4.8M views in its third week at No. 1. Consider that the series tallied 11M views in its first weekend on Netflix and could only muster second place.
The series now sits just below 40M views in total since launch, which places it about halfway to the most popular list. It would need more than 83M views in its 91-day premiere window to beat out The Witcher Season 1. This is still looking relatively unlikely, since the series peaked with about 15.6M views in one week and viewership has steeply declined in the past two measurement periods.
The Gentlemen took third place again, but its viewership also declined to 3.7M views.

Adapted from Cixin Liu’s trilogy, the highly anticipated sci-fi series, 3 Body Problem, by D.B. Weiss, David Benioff, and Alexander Woo became a popular choice on Netflix, right after its release. However, garnering a variety of opinions, the show received a bit of criticism from fans who found the first season to be quite underwhelming.

Cixin Liu’s 3 Body Problem trilogy was considered unadaptable, but D.B. Weiss, David Benioff and Alexander Woo did it for Netflix. Even though Season 1 is streaming, that doesn’t mean they’ve solved Season 2. The trio joined Deadline’s Contenders TV event Sunday to discuss the adaptation, and Weiss explained why continuing the show poses even more creative problems.
“This kind of eases you into the world of the story but the story gets really wild in the best possible way,” Weiss said. “With something that’s that wild, there are a lot of choices to be made and a lot of things to be figured out. We’ve been putting our heads together to figuring them out recently especially the past couple months.”
3 Body Problem involves scientists from around the world discovering a virtual reality video game which leads them to another intergalactic species. The story spans past and present.

Thanks to the blockbuster adaptation of Game of Thrones followed by the prequel House of the Dragon, prolific author George R.R. Martin attained cult status in Hollywood. Now, fans of the series have a treat in store as Martin’s The Hedge Knight will be made into a series. The Game Of Thrones spin-off has cast former rugby player Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall. While the athlete’s towering personality is still not a match for the extreme height the character requires, Martin assured fans that he will be made to look exactly like how he was envisioned.

3 Body Problem spent another week atop Netflix’s TV charts.
The drama series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss with Alexander Woo, drove another 8.3M views from April 1 to 7. That’s quite a bit down from last week’s more than 15M views but still enough to land it at No. 1. According to Netflix, it was in the Top 10 in 92 countries.
At this point, it is quite unlikely that the series would break into the most popular list, as viewership appears to be depreciating fairly quickly. However, there are still several weeks in the show’s premiere window for it to continue racking up views, if it can maintain a steady audience.

With the divide between critics and audiences growing ever larger in today’s day and age, fans of films and genres have begun looking to industry leaders and seasoned storytellers for recommendations that would otherwise fly under the radar of the mainstream audience. Stephen King has come out to recommend one such film, starring Monarch: Legacy of Monsters alum Wyatt Russel.

Night Swim received less than favorable reviews from critics

The film has a critics score of 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is contrasted by a 43% audience score for the film.

Got science questions? Yeah, us too.
If you’ve raced through 3 Body Problem, the new series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. After all, even the show’s scientists are stumped when they witness their well-known theories unravel at the seams.
But for physicists like 3 Body Problem’s Jin (Jess Hong) and real-life astrophysicist Dr. Becky Smethurst (who researches how supermassive black holes grow at the University of Oxford and explains how scientific phenomena work in viral videos), answering the universe’s questions is a problem they’re delighted to solve. Netflix is at or near the top of both Nielsen and Luminate’s streaming rankings every week, but achieved that with some titles that differ from its usual fare during the March 29-April 3 viewing window.
As expected, “3 Body Problem” remained the most-watched streaming original series of the week per Luminate with 964.1 million minutes watched (an estimated 3.6 million views) — unsurprising, as the title is the follow-up from “Game of Thrones” helmers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who created the show alongside Alexander Woo.
But right behind it was “Testament: The Story of Moses,” a biblical series that Netflix calls a “docudrama” that landed on the streamer in time for Easter weekend. Though the project differs from the content typically prioritized by Netflix (and most streamers) it reached a strong 707.8 million minutes watched. Divided by the series’ just over 4-hour runtime, that translates to an estimated 2.8 million views.

The story behind one of Netflix‘s biggest shows gets more twisted. 3 Body Problem is a series with intricate timelines, character arcs, and mysteries to uncover. Based on the bestselling novels by Cixin Liu, the series has key moments early on that foreshadow how the story will play out later in Season 1. Below, creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (Game of Thrones) and Alexander Woo take you through six key clues and revelatory scenes you might have missed on your first watch.
Meeting your partner’s parents is stressful and intimidating at the best of times, but at least it allows you a glimpse into their roots and values. That’s certainly the case when Jin (Jess Hong) meets her boyfriend Raj Varma’s (Saamer Usmani) family in Episode 3. Hannah Waddingham is a well-respected actress, who starred in the critically acclaimed HBO series Game of Thrones. The actress has a wealth of experience in the industry and an admirable body of work.
Since the series ended in 2019, Waddingham has starred in other noteworthy shows, such as Ted Lasso. However, the character Waddingham played on the show could not have been more different from the role she played on the HBO show. As with most characters on the show, Waddingham’s character also met with a gruesome end, and shooting the scene was an awful experience for her.

Hannah Waddingham credits Game Of Thrones with transforming her career, but she didn’t love everything about filming the epic HBO series.
Waddingham played religious zealot Septa Unella in the Thrones franchise and featured in a torture scene, in which Cersei Lannister, played by Lena Headey, poured wine on her face.
She told The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that they filmed the scene for 10 hours and it was like being “actually waterboarded” in a quest for authenticity.
Waddingham said the scene was “horrific” and, five years on from the final season, she continues to have “chronic claustrophobia” as a result of her experience.
Waddingham said she had discussed the condition with Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss since filming had wrapped. “Thrones gave me something I wasn’t expecting,” she said.

3 Body Problem has landed on the top spot of Netflix’s Top 10 list with 15.6 million views, but is it good enough for a series which reportedly boasts a price tag of $20 million per episode?
To put it in comparison, Avatar: The Last Airbender debuted in the number one spot upon its release with 21.2 million views. The show would be dethroned by The Gentlemen, which debuted to 12.2 million views and rose to 20.1 million views the following week. While viewership numbers for 3 Body Problem are nothing to sneeze at, the sizeable budget could cause Netflix to pause when it comes to renewing the series.

A series that has attracted both a lot of love and a lot of hate, Game of Thrones is – whether you like it or not – a pillar of modern television. HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy saga has earned numerous awards and nominations, with series creators D. B. Weiss and David Benioff being lauded as geniuses.
But, as you will probably know, by the time the series actually ended, a lot of hate had accumulated, and the creators’ decision for the series finale made a lot of fans angry, many still consider the ending of Game of Thrones to be one of the worst endings in the history of television.
Recently, though, Weiss and Benioff sat down with Josh Horowitz for an interview as part of his Happy, Sad, Confused series, accompanied by Alexander Woo. The three of them are the creators of the currently popular 3 Body Problem series,...

No stranger to adapting revered novels, Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss joined forces with writer Alexander Woo for the big-budget sci-fi thriller The 3 Body Problem. Known for revolutionizing the medium with Got, which kickstarted the trend of big-budget TV shows centered around spectacle, Benioff and Weiss took a similar route for their Netflix show.
However, unlike Got‘s initial seasons, the Netflix high-budget series fails to encapsulate the books’ proficiency, leaving fans discontent, as its future moving forward appears uncertain.

When it comes to films and TV shows, no matter how exceptionally well they started, no matter how amazingly well they continued, if it doesn’t have an equally exceptional, or at least satisfactory conclusion, then it all comes crashing down. Game of Thrones being the perfect example.
This HBO series was such a groundbreaking and revolutionary piece of television entertainment that it completely changed what the silver screen stood for. But alas, due to a horrible last season, people remember it with more disappointment than reverence.

Naturally, it came as a shock to the audience as to how the co-creators of the show, David Benioff and D.B Weiss, could’ve missed the mark so badly, but it wasn’t a shock to them. In fact, they expected some amount of backlash from the fandom, but not to this extent.

Lin was allegedly sickened by a cup of poisoned pu-erh tea. Lin died about 10 days later. Police detained Xu a few days after Lin’s death.
Four other people were sickened but did not die after Xu poisoned beverages in the office between September and December 2020. He allegedly did so because of disputes with two of them, the court said in a statement.

No fandom has seen death quite like the fandom of Game of Thrones. Neither the widely popular television series nor the source material ever shied away from killing people left and right. While some deaths were too gut-wrenching to watch and made viewers shed some serious tears, others were quite satisfying to watch, to say the least.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss did a show full of death. But one in particular resonated.

“With Thrones, there was so much killing of good guys,” Weiss said, “and we finally got to really kill both Joffrey in season 4 and Ramsay Bolton in season 6. It was fun to go back to the old-fashioned joys of just killing off a really bad guy.”
Bolton, played by Iwan Rheon, was one of the most evil characters in the series. Thus, his death by being devoured by hounds “felt like it was balancing the scales a little,” Weiss said.

The essence of Netflix’s apocalyptic sci-fi series “3 Body Problem” is contained within the immersive VR game engineered by the San-Ti aliens. Using a headset, the VR game transports the player from China’s Shang Dynasty to Tudor England to Kubla Khan’s Xanadu, recreating the chaotic destruction of the alien planet as a result of living in an unstable three-star solar system.
In adapting Liu Cixin’s acclaimed novel, showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Game of Thrones was one of the biggest shows on the air in the past decade. Based on A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin, the popularity of the show was so great that it became the biggest phenomenon of this century.

Very few people in show business have a better understanding of what it takes to spearhead a massive, multimillion dollar production on the scale of "3 Body Problem" than showrunners David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo. Benioff and Weiss guided "Game of Thrones" to eight total seasons, many of which included the most expensive installments of television ever committed to the small screen at the time, while Woo served as producer and writer on "True Blood." With so many moving parts to keep track of and so many urgent matters demanding attention at any given time, in all honesty, it's not terribly shocking that even this top creative team would have to scramble at the last minute to include a scene of utmost narrative importance.
