Where to Watch ‘A Clüsterfünke Christmas’: Comedy Central
Maybe you have a family member or a loved one or someone you live with who is currently pumping an all-day Christmas song radio station or streaming playlist. Perhaps you are that very person for someone else. If either of those apply, I guarantee there’s a song missing from the rotation. It’s called “All I’ll Have for Christmas is Fruit” and it’s a new holiday staple and it arrives about 5 minutes into “A Clüsterfünke Christmas.”
The Comedy Central movie that contains it, written by Rachel Dratch and Ana Gasteyer, is a feature-length riff on Hallmark movies. Much like the thing they’re recreating with a signature twist, it feels like the physical embodiment of a peppermint-flavored checklist, a collection of holiday movie mandates that here get a little bit of a jokey boost.

Currently contending for four 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Short-Form Comedy series, the hilarious and touching Netflix show “Special” draws from series creator/writer/star Ryan O’Connell’s own reality as a gay man with cerebral palsy. O’Connell uses his frequently uncomfortable personal experiences to portray an aspiring writer and late-blooming, disabled gay man who discovers sex, career, and friendships in Los Angeles.
Below, watch a featurette exclusive to IndieWire with interviews from the cast and crew, including O’Connell and executive producer Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”), as well as series standout Punam Patel, who co-stars as O’Connell’s new bestie. Adult Swim is diving into absurdist suburbia with a new comedy series titled “Three Busy Debras.”
The cable channel has issued a series order for the quarter-hour live-action comedy which follows the surreal day-to-day lives of three deranged housewives, all named Debra, in their affluent suburban town of Lemoncurd, Connecticut. The show, whose pilot was ordered by Adult Swim a year ago, will go into production later this year.
“The Three Debras” originated as a web series created by a trio of comedians, Mitra Jouhari (“High Maintenance”), Sandy Honig (“Isn’t It Romantic”) and Alyssa Stonoha. Amy Poehler saw the show and offered to help them bring it to Adult Swim.
The trio will star and serve as executive producers along with director, Anna Dokoza (“Special”). Poehler and Kim Lessing complete the list of executive producers under their Paper Kite Production banner. Paper Kite is behind other comedies such as...

If “Special” were any shorter, it could compete as a short-form series at the Emmys. Only two of its eight initial episodes run over 15 minutes (the TV Academy cut-off), and you can absorb the fun first season in less than two hours. A slight runtime is not a slight in quality — far from it. Some of last year’s best shows were short-form, and more freshman series (not just comedies) could benefit from focusing episodes to quarter-hour chunks. Its appealing length is also a sign of much-appreciated self-awareness, as “Special” needs some time to hone its delivery and find more storytelling confidence, but there’s more than enough in Ryan O’Connell’s new series to make it the right kind of notable.
Based on his own memoir, “I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves,” O’Connell plays Ryan Kayes, a gay man with cerebral palsy who’s still living with his mother,...

The protagonist of “Special” would probably hate how people are describing the (funny! smart!) TV show about his life as being about “a gay, disabled man.” In fact, when Ryan (creator Ryan O’Connell) gets hit by a car shortly before starting a new job in the pilot, and his new co-workers assume that the physical embodiment of his cerebral palsy is due to the accident, he’s downright thrilled. To him, this misunderstanding isn’t a mistake that needs a correcting so much as an incredible opportunity to start their impression of him from scratch. After a lifetime of condescension, he’s suddenly not “the guy with cerebral palsy” they need to pity, but just a fellow human being who got unlucky.
Of course, this being a sitcom, maintaining this lie isn’t nearly as simple as Ryan hoped. But throughout all the comic misunderstandings, “Special” keeps its feet firmly on the ground,...
