It was announced today that Severin Films has optioned the adaptation rights to Killing For Culture, the cult classic nonfiction exploration of death on film written by David Kerekes and David Slater. Slated to adapt and direct the feature is Kier-La Janisse, whose Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror won the SXSW Midnighters award in 2021 and remains one of the greatest documentaries about film of the last couple of decades. A tireless researcher with a unique point of view that lends itself to deep readings, Janisse's involvement in this project seems like a perfect fit. Her work compiling Severin's The Sensual World of Black Emanuelle is a high water mark for home video, which follows on her impressive publishing work including...

As a potential follow-up, Hengl is developing “Bug Boy,” a teenage body horror creature feature. Also in the Capra hopper are period horror film “Dracu,” from Schlegel, horror film “In the Moorland,” by Michael Winiecki, TV series “Newfall,” from Stefano Nurra, and vampire film “Thirst,” by Paul Ertl.

Salem, Massachusetts brews up more Halloween activities than you can shake a broom at each October, so it was logical for Salem Horror Fest to take place during the spookiest month of the year. For its sixth installment, however, the festivities have moved to the spring, making it much easier to attend without throngs of tourists.
If last night’s opening night ceremony — headlined by a screening of Candyman with Tony Todd in attendance — is any indication, horror lovers will show up any time of the year. Held at the Peabody Essex Museum, the event kicked off with poignagnt opening remarks by festival director Kay Lynch. She briefly outlined the evolution of Salem Horror, which was born out of her desire for catharsis after the 2016 election.
With folk horror being a common theme among some of this year’s programming, Kier-La Janisse was enlisted to deliver a keynote address. Much like how her essential documentary,...

Orchestrator of Storms: The Fantastique World of Jean Rollin, from here on simply Orchestrator of Storms, is a long overdue examination of the works of French filmmaker Jean Rollin, a man who has been labelled everything from an auteur to a pornographer and a hack.
Writer/directors Dima Ballin and Kat Ellinger have worked together on several previous documentary shorts about genre films and filmmakers such as The Tale of Mr. Corman and Mr. Poe and The Magnificent Obsession of Michael Reeves as well as on individual projects. However, coming in at an hour and fifty-two minutes Orchestrator of Storms is anything but short.
Orchestrator of Storms picks up almost from the moment of Rollin’s birth to a father who worked in the theatre and a mother who had been an artist’s model. It was his mother who raised him after his father left. The film explores how...

Winnie Cheung’s “Residency,” which has its world premiere in the Bright Future section of Intl. Film Festival Rotterdam, has debuted its trailer (below). Alief is selling the film, which is a “haunting metafictional tale about female artists pushed beyond their limits at a cursed artist residency.”
The film, set at New York artists’ studio The Locker Room, is described by Alief’s Miguel Angel Govea as “an adventurous take on the final girl horror trope.” It is a “hybrid feature dancing between fiction and non-fiction norms that plays like a punk rock cover of Gaspar Noé’s ‘Climax.'”
Cheung commented: “Rather than representing women as sexualized victims through the traditional lens of male fantasies, I’m exploring the real horror behind the anxiety of being a female artist, which is often mixed in with pleasure, delirium and joy.”

In 2012, Kier-La Janisse published House of Psychotic Women and forever changed the landscape of film analysis. Subtitled An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis, the book is an exhaustive look at films from all genres, each featuring one or more female characters with some degree of mental instability. House of Psychotic Women is split into two sections: memoir and appendix. Janisse begins by examining significant moments in her own life, confronting generational trauma, a troubled childhood, her teenage years as a juvenile delinquent, and her journey to festival programming through the lens of narrative film. Each stage of her life is paired with at least one movie in which she seeks to understand her own experiences by comparing them with a character facing a similar issue. Janisse’s vulnerable and unflinchingly honest writing invites the reader into her psyche while inspiring a deeper look into our own lives.

Canadian author, director, festival programmer, and publisher Kier-La Janisse is a true renaissance woman when it comes to film, having sculpted a unique career focusing on cult, horror, and exploitation cinema. Through her small press, Spectacular Optical, she has published books on French fantastique director Jean Rollin, the satanic panic craze, Christmas horror, and bizarre children’s films, among other fantastically niche topics. In recent years her directorial debut, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (2021), won Best Documentary at several festivals, inspired folk horror film screenings in theaters and on Shudder, and was released as part of a massive, fifteen-disc box set through Severin Films. And now, ten years after its initial publication, Fab Press is releasing a new edition of her essential tome, House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films. Now including a preface and 100 new capsule reviews,...

In 2012, Kier-La Janisse’s House of Psychotic Women hit bookshelves – forever altering how critics approached writing about film. Interwoven with deeply personal anecdotes and well-researched film history, Janisse charts horror cinema’s love of using the “crazy” woman archetype and how it altered, spoke to, and enhanced her life. The lines between memoir and movie review blur as Janisse explores the impact these texts (often overlooked films) have had on cinema history, hers, and ours – an approach that was then novel and boldly brought films like Possession into the esteem it has today. Her seminal book questions why and how horror films have used women’s psychological trauma, pain, and neurosis as the backbone of their stories. And, as importantly, how viewers can find catharsis and emotional resonance through their journeys with each film.
Ten years after its groundbreaking debut, Janisse rereleased the title under Fab Press in 2022 – including over...

“House of Psychotic Women” levitates above the niche sub-genre of autobiography through cinema. Layers of knowledge, confession, and imagination mingle to produce a narrative that invites re-reading and re-interpretation. On one level, it is a memoir of personal trauma expressed through horror heroines everywhere from classic horror to giallo to exploitation to more arthouse fare like Robert Altman’s “Images.” Yet author Kier-La Janisse’s book — intriguingly subtitled “An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films” — reaches beyond both autobiography and cinema to conjure a space where collective female neurosis is a sane response to insane circumstances.
First published in 2012, the book has now been reissued for its tenth anniversary, complete with an updated list of films the Canadian author, critic, and horror expert examines. All of them, of course, about “psychotic women.” “I privileged films that were not about psycho-killer women, I privileged films that were...

Severin’s October offerings include this investigation of Euro-weirdness curated with academic purpose and clarity by Kier-La Janisse, evoking the name of her book from 2012. The thesis is the representation of women in filmic horror — except that in these strange experiences, hysteria transforms into a liberating form of empowerment: Identikit, I Like Bats, Footsteps and The Other Side of the Underneath. Elizabeth Tayor and Florinda Bolkan are the top stars in the collection, two of which bear the cinematography of Vittorio Storaro. The final film is a totally different, experimental experience. Ms. Janisse’s introductions connect the dots for these filmworks that envigorate and disturb.

Shudder’s comprehensive “Home for Halloween” line-up this October features the premiere of Dario Argento’s giallo return, ‘Dark Glasses,’ and much more.
Every Halloween, horror fans are presented with a murderer’s row of options when it comes to the perfect place to binge on bloody buffets of seasonal content. Horror programming is unavoidable during this time of year, but some channels and streaming services go above and beyond in terms of what they offer their audience. At this point, acclaimed horror movies and episodes of television shows are the bare minimum and the most promising streaming services find ways to truly celebrate this haunting holiday. In announcing the Feature Film Prize for the film, the jury said the following: “A socially relevant horror movie for modern times, Sylvia Caminer’s Follow Her features a completely unpredictable screenplay by star Dani Barker with a twist at the end that rivals The Sixth Sense.

It was a good day to be bad at Fantasia, as the Cheval Noir Award went to Karim Ouelhaj’s “Megalomaniac,” loosely inspired by the horrifying true story of the “Butcher of Mons.” The Belgian serial killer is believed to have murdered at least five women in the 1990s. He was never captured and his identity was never revealed.
The jury of the event’s 26th edition, including Charles Bramesco, Elza Kephart, Maitland McDonagh and Heather O’Neill, presided over by C. Robert Cargill, fell for its unapologetic darkness, calling “Megalomaniac” “the very sort of film that festivals exist to share.”
“[It’s] an astonishing, brutal piece of art that challenges the audience while simultaneously saying something deeply profound. It is a lush piece of cinema whose intent is to disturb and it succeeds at every turn,” they stated, also awarding Eline Schumacher for her committed performance as the killer’s daughter Martha,...

House Of Psychotic Women (Expanded Edition) by Kier-La Janisse, Fab Press Ltd., Isbn 178 1 913051 21 1.
The 2022 edition of House Of Psychotic Women
It’s difficult to believe that only ten years have passed since the original publication of Kier-La Janisse’s House Of Psychotic Women, such has been the book’s impact and so profuse the number of female-focused genre films made since. As one looks back, one sees more clearly than ever just how much progress has been made since, both in terms of gender relations in the industry and in regard to the prevalence of female voices in discussions of horror cinema. With respect for the person she was when she wrote it, and the impossibility of reconnecting fully with what the autobiographical aspects of its content meant to her back then, the author has decided to leave the main part of the text untouched, but this expanded edition contains around a.

Kier-La Janisse
First released in 2012, Kier-La Janisse’s House Of Psychotic Women was of major importance in the appraisal of horror cinema, and remains one of the most influential work looking at the genre from a female perspective. Part memoir, part critical exploration of key genre titles, it is remarkable in its scope and in its contextualisation of key works. Tomorrow the expanded tenth anniversary edition will be launched at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal. Ahead of the festival, Kier-La and I met up to discuss the book, and I asked her where she began in taking on the enormous task of bringing it up to date.
“I made a point of not really looking at what I wrote before, because I always hate my writing when I look back at it even a year later,” she says – something which a lot of authors will relate to....

Between them comes the usual mix of festival favorites heading to Canada for the first time and eagerly anticipated titles making their debut. From a special screening of Bodies Bodies Bodies to Neil Labute’s House of Darkness or Wai Ka-Fai’s Detective vs.

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where this month we’re going Og folk horror with the 1971 Piers Haggard film, The Blood On Satan’s Claw. Our guide this month is Chandler Bullock, who in addition to having bylines at Dread Central, We Are Horror, Morbidly Beautiful, and Film Cred, also created The Beauty of Horror podcast to explore “the unsettling beauty found in the horror genre.” Bullock takes a very thorough but accessible approach to explaining how we can find the macabre to be attractive, and I’m excited to incorporate that into a discussion about a subgenre known for its contrast of traditionally pleasant aesthetics with more horrific elements.
Directed by Piers Haggard, The Blood on Satan’s Claw takes place in a small 18th-century English village, where farmer Ralph (Barry Andrews) accidentally unearths some ghastly remains in one of the fields. While the local...

Kier-La Janisse is a legend in the genre film community. With over twenty years of writing, analysis, programming, and festival experience, she helped build the community that we all strive to support, and a pillar of her contribution to the culture is her groundbreaking 2012 book, House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films. It's a hefty handle to be sure, but Janisse's book is one of the most influential pieces of film analysis of the 21st century, and for its tenth anniversary she's gone back to those dark places and expanded its scope. With coverage of more than 100 additional films and an exclusive CD featuring Janisse's reading of the classic The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins...

Last year, writer-director Kier-La Janisse released Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched at festivals and cinemas, and it fast gained word of mouth for being something special. Billed as a documentary about folk horror in films, it turned out to be that but also much more, its 3 hours and 14 minutes providing a loving and thorough look at witchcraft and mysticism around the world. In his review, our J. Hurtado called it "...an outstanding achievement in the academic treatment of genre filmmaking." Needless to say I was excited when distributor Severin announced that Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched would receive a lavish special edition Blu-ray release. But Severin did more: from their archives they dragged several films mentioned in the documentary, acquired a few extra,...

Kier-La Janisse’s exhaustive doc is not just an education in the genre’s history but a lesson in how to make a film essay
At three-and-a-bit hours long, this is worth every geeky minute if you’re into the genre of the title – think Witchfinder General all the way through to Midsommar. With its really smart deep dives into cultural criticism, this is a seasonal stocking overflowing with spooky fun. Writer-director Kier-La Janisse, founder of the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, clearly knows the subject inside out, and finds the best authors, scholars and authorities to talk about the subject. But what’s really admirable is the way it is organised into digestible chapters that flow silkily from one subject to another, eased along by a spontaneous and colloquial voiceover from the director herself. As a film essay, the methodology is exemplary; if you want an education in an...

Folklore is the oldest manifestation of shared storytelling. It has been a part of cinema since the very early days, when it inspired works such as Alice Guy-Blaché’s The Cabbage Fairy and George S Fleming’s Jack And The Beanstalk. But what of folk horror?
