- Originally from West Bend, Wisconsin, David earned a Bachelor's Degree in English - Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin Madison. After serving as Deputy Editor of The Madison Review, UW's nationally renowned literary journal, David redirected his classical narrative storytelling training to the new canvas of screen-writing, and moved to Los Angeles to further pursue the craft. He has since written a number of original screenplays, including the critically acclaimed, cult favorite horror-satire Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006), directed by Scott Glosserman.
David is also one of three subjects in the Mercury Productions documentary Dreams on Spec (2007) , by filmmaker Daniel Snyder, which showcases the trials and tribulations of pursuing a screen-writing career in Hollywood.

- Is the current Waterfront Director and a lifeguard at Camp Del Corazon, a charity organization for children with heart conditions.
- First professional writing experience was working as a freelance writer for the Guinness Book of World Records.
- Extensive "behind the scenes" footage of the production of "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon" was captured by the documentary crew of "Dreams on Spec," who were shadowing David Stieve and director Scott Glosserman throughout the pre-production and shooting phases of the film.
