I was set to cover Black Lotus when it was released in the UK a month from now when, to my surprise, a friend announced it was our movie watch for the weekend. It seems it was released over here with pretty much zero publicity, which is never a good sign. But his enthusiasm “It’s got Frank Grillo and a seven-foot Mma fighter!” won me over. And since I was going to be watching it now, I figured I might as well write it up now as well.
Armed men have taken the German National Opera hostage and are demanding a three hundred million ransom. Three hundred million what is never mentioned but be it dollars, euros, or marks, they want three hundred million of them.

Warning: contains major spoilers for the Seven Kings Must Die ending.
That battle was the crowning moment of Seven Kings Must Die, twenty-plus minutes of visceral squelch and blood flying on a scale that The Last Kingdom hasn’t seen before.
But after the fighting was over, when the dead had been counted and the wounded carried away to their fates, the film ended with a quiet scene that concluded a thread woven throughout this story from the start. Alfred’s dream was finally achieved – England was formed – not by him, nor by Edward, but by King Aethelstan and Uhtred Ragnarsson, who was left hanging in the balance between life and death.
Does Uhtred Die at the End of the Film?
As the narrator of Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories, Uhtred obviously survives into old age in the books in order to tell his tale. The film Seven Kings Must Die,...

Somehow, we made it to the halfway point of 2018.
As summer begins to really take hold, July might not be as packed with headline new shows as previous months were. But for anyone who thought that the allure of the sunny outdoors would curb the insatiable appetite for new TV shows: think again.
(We do this every month — if you missed any of those previous picks, here are some notable TV premieres from February, March, April, May, and June.)
“Mostly 4 Millennials”
It’s been a big week for Adult Swim, with the mesmerizing “Mr. Neighbor’s House 2” premiering this past Sunday night and a new Casper Kelly short in the Infomercial slot. Now, to keep that momentum going comes this unclassifiable piece of satire (?) about a hyperconnected generation with a criminally short attention span.
“Sharp Objects”
One of the summer’s most anticipated series feels like one of the seasons surest bets.

The Last Kingdom is fast becoming the most entertaining hours of the week’s TV, even if it is impossible to remember everyone’s names…
This review contains spoilers.

Fortune’s a fickle thing in The Last Kingdom. Last week we watched a man go from slave to king; this week we watched our hero go from lord to slave. Gullible parvenu Guthred listened to the devil on his shoulder instead of the long-haired peacock on his other shoulder and packed Uhtred, son of Uhtred, and Halig, son of a gun, off to captivity.
Guthred really should have taken the precaution of a series one iPlayer catch-up before putting the...
