For Variety‘s Writers on Writers, Emma Forrest pens a tribute to “Spencer” (screenplay by Steven Knight).
I’ve always enjoyed Steven Knight’s work because it’s so outside my own wheelhouse. Having created the taut, broken-machismo of “Peaky Blinders” and written the urban thrillers “Eastern Promises” and “Dirty Pretty Things,” the 62-year-old Birmingham-born Knight is who you would not pick to map the interior emotional landscape of a damaged young woman from the upper classes.
Then, after watching “Spencer,” I remembered how moved I’ve been by the way Springsteen writes about women, and the tenderness Tarantino evoked for “Jackie Brown.” Like them, counterintuitive as it may seem, Knight knocks it out of the park.
With no disrespect to the other depictions of Diana, if you weren’t actually there to witness what transpired and must therefore imagine, use your imagination. Diana being talked down from suicide by the ghost of Anne Boleyn?...

The writer and director on how her new novel came to her in dreams, the three female artists who’ve influenced her most, and the restorative effect of Rachel Cusk’s trilogy
Emma Forrest is an acclaimed novelist, screenwriter and director. Born in London in 1976, she got her first break in journalism aged 15 and has since written three novels, Namedropper, Thin Skin and Cherries in the Snow, as well as a memoir, Your Voice in My Head. Her screenplays include Liars (A-e), Know Your Rights and Love Minus Zero. Her directorial debut, Untogether, premiered at the Tribeca film festival in 2018 and was released in the UK in July this year. Her new novel, Royals, is a love story that explores the power of art and the pull of family ties.
What inspired you to write your new book?
There was a different novel I’d been working on for about eight years.

Authenticity of experience, and the pitfalls of its allure, are at the heart of writer-director Emma Forrest’s debut feature “Untogether,” a tart, compelling romantic snarl about the iffy relationships a pair of tensely supportive sisters — played by real-life sibs Jemima Kirke and Lola Kirke — have with a couple of emotionally challenged men played by Jamie Dornan and Ben Mendelsohn.
A showbiz-adjacent story set in tucked-away hills of Los Angeles that become a neurosis-wallowing refuge for its quartet of characters, “Untogether” at its chill, observant best resembles what a left coast, smart-satiric-serious kind of romantic comedy might look like going forward as we wean ourselves of the influence a certain bespectacled, controversial New York comic auteur has had over the genre for decades.

Emma Forrest has been a writer all of her life. Now, she’s a director too. The British-American journalist, novelist and screenwriter, debuted her first feature film Untogether at Tribeca Film Festival 2018. The film stars real-life siblings Lola and Jemima Kirke, as well as Jamie Dornan, Billy Crystal and Ben Mendelsohn (the director’s ex-husband). This dreamy relationship drama was one of our festival favorites.
Told with graphic sensitivity, framed by elliptical editing, Forrest’s story feels deliberately realized. Regardless of whatever first-feature fiascos must have occurred during production, Untogether remains a visually assured debut. In fact, it doesn’t feel like a debut, rather, a conclusive chapter in the lives of well lived-in characters.…...

A handsome relationship drama about four fantastic-looking people whose interior lives are something of a wreck, Emma Forrest's Untogether has its share of life/art parallels beyond the fact that the sisters at its core are played by real-life siblings Lola and Jemima Kirke. That excellent bit of casting, along with that of co-stars Ben Mendelsohn (the director's ex-husband) and Jamie Dornan, should make the debut feature considerably more attractive to indie distributors, who will also respond to its smart, uningratiating screenplay and polished look.

In today’s casting round-up, THR reports that Jamie Dornan, Ben Mendelsohn, and sisters Jemima and Lola Kirke will be teaming together for the indie drama Untogether, the directorial debut of best-selling author Emma Forrest. The film concerns Jemima Kirke’s former-teen-prodigy-turned-junkie Andrea, who has an affair with Nick (Dornan) while she’s clean and trying to be a writer. Nick is already a successful writer, regaling the world with stories of his war-time experiences. Lola Kirke plays Jemima’s younger sister, whose relationship with the older Mendelsohn is tested when she falls for a Rabbi with an even larger age gap than her and Mendelsohn. Forrest will pen the script as well, which is being produced by Luke Daniels, Scott Lastaiti, and Brandon K. Hogan.
THR is also reporting that Michael Cera is currently in discussion to star in Aaron Sorkin‘s directorial debut Molly’s Game, alongside Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba.

The Toronto International Film Festival is quickly approaching and already, the annual event has bolstered its lineup with a host of marquee features – from The Magnificent Seven to Peter Berg’s blockbuster Deepwater Horizon, you’ll struggle to find any notable awards contenders that have missed the cut.

Get ready stateside filmgoers, because the “phoners” (aka “crazies”) are coming to the Us. Stephen King fans know that the master of macabre doesn’t like using cell phones. His 2006 novel, Cell, is a cautionary tale about what can go wrong by pressing portable phones to our ears and keeping them close at hand in our pockets, and its unflinching subject matter contains flocks of murderous lunatics that would be right at home in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, George A. Romero’s The Crazies, or Simon Clark’s Blood Crazy.

Coverage of ISAs (international sales agents) resumed for the American Film Market. This segment follows leaders, innovation and successful new startups in the world of international film sales and distribution.
The Beverly Hills based International Film Trust (Ift) was started in April 2013 by co-founders Michael Benaroya of Benaroya Pictures and Miscellaneous Entertainment principals D. Todd Shepherd and George Waud.
Since its inception at Cannes in 2013, Ift has acquired 12 films with another set for Berlin 2015. The first titles were successfully presold last year and have since been scheduled for theatrical release.
Ift President Christian De Gallegos brings a wealth of wisdom and experience from his background in the talent agencies and as a sales agent for Voltage Pictures, working on Oscar winners like “The Hurt Locker” and “Dallas Buyers Club”.
De Gallegos talks about the progress of this fairly new sales agency and shares some of Ift’s upcoming films:
How did Ift start?
Michael Benaroya had been an active producer and financier for years, outsourcing international sales to the leading independent companies. His slate was growing and international distribution remained crucial to his business model, so he knew that starting an international sales agency would be financially efficient and would give him a more thorough market awareness which is invaluable when packaging.
Mb: I worked with the top international distributors at Voltage who have thankfully supported Ift since day one and we’ve been lucky to partner with powerhouse companies like Sony, eOne and Universal who are currently scheduled to release half our slate, having come on board in pre-production.
The majority of our lineup to date has been within the Us$ 10 million dollar range, shot with soft money and internationally viable casts, keeping budgets to a reasonable level so presales without confirmed U.S. theatrical distribution are realistic. We comfortably retain production value which validates theatrical upside.
We’re excited to step up to the next level this year. We have two films in which we’re involved with financing and distribution: one at Us$ 33 million and another at Us$ 35 million.
What are some new projects that you’re excited about?
“You Shall Know Our Velocity”, based off Dave Eggers best-selling novel, will start shooting April 2015 with Daniel Radcliffe. Also, we have a film called “Cymbeline” with Dakota Johnson as the lead (from “Fifty Shades of Grey”), which premiered at Venice this year. Grindstone will theatrically release it in early 2015.
What do you look for when considering a film?
Interesting concepts and relevant topics with the right financing structure. I’ve been involved with the passion projects of A-list actors which can be exciting as they attract great ensembles, cameos, crew and their enthusiasm usually leads to a better movie.
How did you enter the business?
I started in the talent agency world, working at Paradigm in film, music and TV. The agencies are the epicenter of the entertainment industry; there you’re exposed to all sides of the business, so it was just a matter of time before I learned about international sales and figured it would suit me best. I found an opportunity at Voltage Pictures working as Nicolas Chartier’s assistant in 2007. After a few months he promoted me to sell on his behalf. I worked there for six years, sold about 100 movies and was lucky enough to be part of great films like “The Hurt Locker”, which won eight Oscars, “Don Jon”, and “Dallas Buyer’s Club”. The founders of Ift approached me early 2013 and I’ve been thrilled to be a part of our growing company ever since.
What do you love the most about your work?
I love deal making and the satisfaction it brings me, whether it’s a quick handshake or a challenging spin on a tough topic. I love the partnerships I’ve formed and friendships I’ve developed, with both clients and competitors. I love the markets but prefer visiting what is a very nice network of people on their home turf, traveling the world to see firsthand where our influence reaches.

Emma Watson reunited with Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling at a Lumos fund-raising event on Saturday night. The event, which was hosted by J.K., was held at the Warner Bros. Harry Potter Tour in London and also brought out Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, and Stella McCartney and husband Alasdhair Willis. Emma obviously has a longtime relationship with J.K., as she played Hermione Granger in all eight film adaptations of the famous book series. The actress seemed excited to be back at the enchanted studio where the movies were produced - she shared a funny photo of herself on Twitter while posing in front of a model of Hermione, saying, "Still got it. #HarryPotterWorld #watford." Emma is likely enjoying a nice break from work responsibilities now that her latest project, the fantasy film Noah, is in postproduction. After the holidays, Emma will be back on the set to begin...

Undoubtedly one of the most talented and exciting young actresses working today, Emma Watson has blossomed in her post-Potter career, taking on diverse roles in many different ambitious, compelling projects. However, her greatest challenge yet as an actress may be just around the corner, with the news that Watson has taken on the lead role in Your Voice In My Head, an adaptation of Emma Forrest’s bestselling memoir, which charts the troubled British novelist’s struggles with bipolar disorder and a selfless psychiatrist’s attempts to save her from self-destruction.
In an official press release announcing Watson’s casting, International Film Trust President Ariel Veneziano stated:
Starting her career so young and literally growing up in front of us, Emma Watson has established herself as a sophisticated and talented actress. She is perfect for this role.
Since the Harry Potter franchise concluded in 2011, Watson has certainly faired the best of the series’ three leads.

Over a year and a half ago, Harry Potter franchise director David Yates was slated to reteam with star Emma Watson in an adaptation of writer Emma Forrest's memoir, Your Voice in My Head. However, just this last March, co-star Stanley Tucci said that Watson would be replaced by Emily Blunt. Then a couple months later, director David Yates left the project, and it was unclear where that left the production. Now a press release has announced that Watson is still attached to star, but this time Francesca Gregorini (Tanner Hall, Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes) will be sitting in the director's chair. More below! Saving Mr. Banks and Jane Eyre producer Alison Owen is behind the film which has a script adapted by Forrest herself that made the Black List a little while back. Hermione has officially left the building. Former "Harry Potter" star Emma Watson, who appeared in two of the summer's very best films -- "The Bling Ring" and "This is the End" -- as two very different characters, is continuing to make bold career choices. The 23-year-old actress is next set to star in "Your Voice in My Head," the movie adaptation of Emma Forrest's bestselling memoir about her struggles with bipolar disorder.
What's interesting about the project is that Watson was attached once before: Earlier this year, when it was going to be helmed by four-time "Harry Potter" director David Yates, she was on board. But when Yates dropped out, so did Watson, and Emily Blunt was cast in her place. Blunt later split with the production as well, leaving Watson able to return, this time under the direction of "Tanner Hall" filmmaker Francesca Gregorini.

"Harry Potter" actress Emma Watson is back onboard the film adaptation of "Your Voice In My Head".
The film is an adaptation of Emma Forrest's memoir which explores the personal crisis she faced when a romance fell apart and her psychiatrist died.
The story is set in New York, London and Istanbul. Forrest adapted the screenplay herself.
Watson was previously linked to the project back before it seemingly collapsed last year after the departure of director David Yates. Now it's up and running again with Francesca Gregorini ("Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes") at the helm.

The 2013 Brit List, the Black List of the UK, has sent out its annual round-up of the 15 best unproduced screenplays in Britain. Stephen Fingleton's "The Survivalist," a dystopian drama set in a bleak future where an isolated farmer teams with a woman and her 17-year-old daughter, has made the top of the pile, based on nominations from producers, agents and distributors. Fingleton is a first-time feature screenwriter, with past IMDb credits of two short films he wrote and directed. Also included on the list, in second place, is a "bold new adaptation" of Charles Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities," by David Farr (co-writer of Joe Wright's "Hanna"). The adaptation of Emma Forrest's novel "Your Voice in My Head," along with a screen version of Laura Wade's hit play "Posh" also make the cut. The Brit List was created in 2007 as a means to draw...
