"How far would you jump... for the one you love." Gravitas has released a trailer for an indie sci-fi thriller titled Coyote, made by filmmaker Dustin Curtis Murphy as his feature debut. It'll be out to watch on VOD next week. A story of forbidden love in a dystopian future where teleportation tech enables two refugees to escape genocide. When they trust the wrong back-alley teleporter, Ekaterina and Anya end up separated. In a desperate attempt to be reunited again, they're entwined in an insidious human trafficking ring involving corrupt politicians. Starring The Witcher actress Therica Wilson-Read and Absentia actress Borislava Stratieva, plus Ruhtxjiaih Bellenea, Ailish Symons, Tian Chaudry, Beruce Khan, and Richard Glover. The filmmakers say it's a film where "LGBTQ refugees [are] seen as the heroes they are... We need to push these types of stories to the forefront." Yes, agreed, but this looks bad and no one is going to watch it anyway.

Director Ben Wheatley is best known for his crazy films such as Kill List, Free Fire, Sightseers, High Rise, and A Field in England. He always does some crazy far-out stuff in his films and I’ve liked everything that he’s done.
He has now made a family reunion comedy that looks unlike anything that he’s made before. It’s called Happy New Year, Colin Burstead and even though it looks like it will be his most normal movie yet, I’m sure that won’t be the case. Wheatley has never made anything normal.
Here’s the synopsis:
Colin Burstead has hired a heritage mansion for a New Year's Eve party for his extended family and hangers-on, with his own wife Val, teenage daughter Fran, and infant son Jamie in tow. Colin's mother–the family's matriarch–dramatically injures her ankle before she has even crossed the manor house's threshold.

"You need to get your house in order!" Limelight Distribution has debuted a trailer for Ben Wheatley's latest film, a familial dramedy titled Happy New Year, Colin Burstead. This already showed on BBC TV last year, after touring around film festivals starting with the London Film Festival. The raucous "family reunion comedy" is about a man named Colin Burstead, of course, who has decided to rent a lavish country manor for his extended family to celebrate New Year. Unfortunately for Colin his position of power in the family is under serious threat from the arrival of his estranged brother David, sending everything into chaos. The cast includes Neil Maskell as Colin, with Sura Dohnke, Marvin Maskell, Nicole Nettleingham, Doon Mackichan, Bill Paterson, Hayley Squires, Mark Monero, Richard Glover, and Sudha Bhuchar. This looks great! This impressed me, and it still has Wheatley's style. I love the dramatic turn in the trailer.

Happy New Year, Colin Burstead follows in the stead of Ben Wheatley’s previous directing efforts, in particular his 2013 black and white acid trip exploit A Field in England, in the case of releasing his picture simultaneously on both demand and a limited cinematic release. However this may alos just be his unsung masterpiece in a filmography that continues to evoke a grand sense of evolution with each entry and distinctive palette, which reinforces Wheatley’s stunning artistic ability with every and any angle.

“Reboot” is a word bandied about so much in the film industry these days that its meaning has become entirely elastic, referring to anything from a sequel to a remake to a mildly delayed franchise chapter. A lo-fi, high-volume original character piece from Ben Wheatley, “Happy New Year, Colin Burstead” is none of these things — and yet, in the sense that a reboot describes a freshly started system following technical complications, it feels like one for this genre-roaming writer-director. After mixed returns for the dizzy formal chaos of his J.G. Ballard adaptation “High-Rise” and the vapid shoot-’em-up varnish of “Free Fire,” Wheatley’s restless study of a dysfunctional family reunited for a prickly New Year’s Eve party is a back-to-basics affair that rewardingly sets him back in the seasick domestic space of his debut “Down Terrace,” albeit with words as its only weapons this time.

The second episode of HBO's new miniseries, "The Casual Vacancy," begins with a funeral. As the people of Pagford, a bucolic English village set amid burbling streams and emerald meadows, pour into the old stone chapel at the center of town, the set piece emerges as a microcosm of their fractured community. Conservative parish council chairman Howard Mollison (Michael Gambon) sports an ornate necklace; doctor Parminder Jawanda (Lolita Chakrabarti) wears a lavender sari; angry, abusive working man Simon Price (Richard Glover) hides behind dark Aviators; simpering school reformer Colin Wall (Simon McBurney) puffs on his inhaler. Though sketched in broad terms, the sequence is nevertheless a provocative clash of race and class as seen through the veneer of propriety, and no one is quite innocent except for the man in the coffin. A potent, tragicomic parable of austerity Britain, "The Casual Vacancy," adapted by Sarah Phelps from J.K. Rowling's novel and directed by.

Walt Disney Pictures released their new musical/fantasy flick "Into The Woods" into theaters this past Thursday. I just checked it out, and thought it was pretty entertaining and more comical than I thought it would be. It stars: Tracey Ullman, Frances de la Tour, Johnny Depp, Lucy Punch, Meryl Streep, Chris Pine, Emily Blunt, Simon Russell Beale, Tammy Blanchard, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Christine Baranski, Billy Magnussen, Lilla Crawford, Daniel Huttlestone, MacKenzie Mauzy, Richard Glover, Joanna Riding, and Annette Crosbie. The movie revolved a couple of different characters and plotlines that all came together, full circle, towards the end. We saw Cinderella, wishing she could attend the King's festival, but instead, was treated like crap by her evil step sisters. Meanwhile, the baker and his wife wanted to have kids, but found out they were secretly cursed by the witch who had a unpleasant past with the baker's father.

Not only does it include interviews with the cast and crew talking about the story, but it also gives audiences a ridiculous amount of new footage, some of which features the cast singing. Into the Woods looks like a beautiful movie, and this featurette actually got me really excited to see it. I wasn't sure if I'd like this film, but I'm completely on board now.
"Into the Woods" is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish...

I've never seen the stage musical that this movie is based on, but I'm familiar with a couple of the songs. It looks like a decent movie, and it has an impressive cast that also includes Emily Blunt, James Corden,...

Film4 FrightFest will be screening a record twenty short films, twelve of them world premieres, at this year’s August event at the Vue West End, Leicester Square – including the latest from director Federico Zampaglione entitled Remember, the Fiona Dourif starring She (which I backed on Kickstarter many moons ago) and the second Jessica Cameron-starring production showing at Frightfest, the UK-lensed short The Tour.

Though it may not have been met with the critical acclaim or sales numbers of her juggernaut Harry Potter series, British author J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy certainly did not go unnoticed by BBC One and HBO when it hit shelves in 2012. The television networks announced in April that they would be collaborating on a miniseries adaptation of the adult-oriented drama. Now, the impressive cast that the networks has pulled together for The Casual Vacancy, which will run for three one-hour episodes, has been revealed.
Michael Gambon (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) will take on the role of Howard Mollison, owner of a delicatessen in the town of Pagford. Julia McKenzie (Notes on a Scandal) will play his wife, Shirley. Rufus Jones (Bill) is playing Howard Mollison’s son Miles, and Miles’ wife Samantha Mollison will be portrayed by Keeley Hawes (Ashes to Ashes). Rory Kinnear (Showtime’s...

Following its release in the UK last summer, Ben Wheatley’s A Field in England is finally about to get its stateside release at the start of next month.
Drafthouse Films is also launching a simultaneous theatrical and VOD release, taking a similar direction to the unique multi-platform release we saw here last year.
With its Us release right around the corner, Drafthouse has released a new trailer teasing just some of the chaos that ensues in Wheatley’s latest, along with an appropriately psychedelic poster designed by Jay Shaw to match. And in case you needed any more persuading, Martin Scorsese himself is quoted as a fan of the film.

A Field In England
Written by Amy Jump and Ben Wheatley
Directed by Ben Wheatley
UK, 2013
The increasingly prolific Ben Wheatley returns to screens a little under a year since his gallows-humour effigy Sightseers. Like a talent possessed, he seems like a filmmaker anxious to capitalise on his growing cult recognition and harness larger and more challenging material, a successful strategy that has give him a growing fanbase on both sides of the pond. Experimental in form and delivery, his new film A Field In England had a unique opening in the UK, leading with a modest run in specialist cinemas while being available via download, on demand, and even airing on Film4, all on the same day. As the treasure of these spoils are assessed, the film is confidently tromping through festivals across Europe and now North America, featuring under the Vanguard strand of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Following on from the somewhat more accessible Sightseers last Autumn, there was a concern that bold and innovative director Ben Wheatley was veering towards a more mainstream approach. However any such trepidation has been quickly dissolved, as he returns alongside writer and regular collaborator Amy Jump to bring us A Field in England – a bleak yet illuminating picture that manages to combine the darkness of The League of Gentlemen, with the utter absurdity of The Mighty Boosh to create one of the most memorable films you will see this year.
Disregarding any palpable narrative, Wheatley presents a surreal drama set during the 17th century English Civil War, as we follow a small collection of eccentric delinquents including Whitehead (Reece Shearsmith), who have fled the battlefield to venture across a vast field that is harvesting magic mushrooms, as the group embark on a psychedelic hunt for buried treasure, following malevolent alchemist...

If the latest feature from British director Ben Wheatley ('Sightseers', 'Kill List') wasn't enough to get you excited then we're certain this first trailer from his new project 'A Field of England' won't disappoint. The shroom induced feature that is being described as 'a psychedelic trip into magic and madness' was written by Wheatley along with 'Kill List' co-scribe Amy Jump.
