When it came to penning the comedic tunes for “The Other Two,” songwriter Brett “Leland” McLaughlin reveals “the trick was to keep the lyric funny” and “not write a comedic melody.” The prolific tunesmith spoke about his work at Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel, hosted by managing editor Chris Beachum. The event took place on Tuesday, May 28, at the Landmark Theater in Los Angeles. Watch our exclusive video interview with McLaughlin above.

The freshman Comedy Central series centers on two siblings — a struggling actor (Drew Tarver) and a former dancer (Helene York) — whose younger brother, Chase (Case Walker), becomes an overnight YouTube sensation. McLaughlin provided creators Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider (both of “Saturday Night Live” fame) with many humorous songs for the show, which “really wasn’t much different from what I normally do when writing pop songs for recording artists.

The academy often loves movies about social justice issues, like “Milk” and “Spotlight” in recent years, so can “Boy Erased” have a strong showing at the Oscars as well? Based on the memoir by Garrard Conley, the film centers on a young gay man (Lucas Hedges) sent to conversion therapy by his devoutly religious parents (Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman). The film was written and directed by Joel Edgerton, who co-stars as the program’s instructor. Gold Derby recently spoke with Kidman, Edgerton and songwriter Brett McLaughlin about their work.

Edgerton was taken with the story after his agent gave him the book. “I grew up with a deep fear of institutions and I had heard a little bit about gay conversion therapy, so my morbid curiosity led me to read it,” he explains.

Beverly Hills – Citing the experience as a “massive dream,” rising pop star and part-time actor Troye Sivan took some time out from his busy touring schedule to perform for an audience of assembled press on Monday. Sivan has a small role in Joel Edgerton’s “Boy Erased” and the filmmaker asked the fellow Aussie to contribute a song to the film’s soundtrack. That led to “Revelation,” which is in the race for the Best Original Song Oscar along with a number of other notable contenders “A Star is Born’s” “Shallow” and “Black Panther’s” “All The Stars.”
Sivan wrote the song alongside Jon Thor Birgisson (Jonsi), Troye Sivan & Brett McLaughlin and the version in the film is performed by Sivan and Jonsi.

Most great crime thrillers hook us in with a mystery: who's the killer? The Snowman, released earlier this month to a blizzard of chilly reviews, offers another conundrum that lurks just outside the frame: how did a film with such a sterling pedigree go so bafflingly wrong?
The plot, as laid out in Jo Nesbo's best-selling novel of the same name, sounds like decent fodder for a disturbing thriller in the vein of Seven or The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Ed Sheeran made his Game of Thrones debut in the season seven premiere. The people of the internet had a lot of thoughts. The singer, who isn't the first musician to make a cameo on the series, appeared in a scene with Maisie Williams' Arya Stark, right after she did one of her most badass things (read all about that here). His appearance, which included singing, was done for Williams, a fan of Sheeran. "For years, we tried to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie, and this year we finally did it," co-creator David Benioff said at a SXSW panel in March. Other musician cameos have included Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody, Will Champion from Coldplay, Sigur Rós, and Mastodon, but...

Ed Sheeran appeared on the Game of Thrones Season Seven premiere. The songwriter appeared around a campfire with a crew of Lannisters, eating rabbit and crooning the unofficially-titled "Hands of Gold." The song first appeared in A Storm of Swords, George R.R. Martin's 2000 installment of the Song of Ice and Fire series.
"For hands of gold are always cold, but a woman's hands are warm," the grinning Sheeran sang, as Arya Stark happened upon the dining Lannister clan. "It's a new one," the musician explained in close-up.

Welcome to Westeros, Ed Sheeran!
After months of speculation, the 26-year-old singer made his highly anticipated Game of Thrones debut in Sunday night's season seven premiere, and we're pleased to say that his mysterious character was worth the wait.
The "Castle on the Hill" singer appeared 39 minutes into the episode when his unnamed character's angelic voice caught the attention of young Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) as she was riding through the forest.
"For hands of gold are always cold, but a woman's hands are warm," Sheeran's character croons while sitting fireside with a group of soldiers who have stopped to have a bite to eat before heading to The Riverlands.
"It's a pretty song, I've never heard it before," Arya says.
"It's a new one," Sheeran cheekily retorts.

Some artists transcend description, best they are not compartmentalized into a specific genre of music. Miss Melanie De Biasio is a Belgian artist that incorporates jazz, classical, nufolk, even electronica into her musically rich vocabulary to create her truly unique and atmospheric sound; not unlike Sigur Ros or Bjork or Joni Mitchell's jazz-informed work in the late '80s. This song was released on her 2014 album No Reply, an album I just got turned on to by my dear friend Michael Naso. This version of the song features strings and was recorded in a cathedral in Brussels. The arrangement is fantastic and it features a wonderful Gregorian contralto co-vocal by Romain Dayez. In fact, as much as I like this string-driven version of the title track, her song "The Flow" from that album is even better. It's got a killer groove. Think '70s era Gil Scott-Heron. And if...

As far as feature documentaries about the history of film, be it about specific genres, films or film talent, are more often than not “tough sledding.” Droll, self serious and completely superficial, a vast majority of documentaries about the history of film feel lifeless and simply a series of facts told to the audience by whoever the filmmaker could get in the booth that day.

Bill Morrison is a passionate archivist and a gifted collage artist, and sometimes — at his best — he is able to be both at once, using one area of expertise to deepen the other. In 2002’s brilliant “Decasia,” for example, he reassembled snippets of exposed and decaying nitrate film stock into a quasi-structuralist (and entirely non-narrative) meditation on death. Morrison recognizes that objects are endowed with their own unique histories, that raw material can be a medium unto itself, and his work invites viewers to think about cinema as a product of — and a witness to — its environment.
In that respect at least, “Dawson City: Frozen Time” is vintage Bill Morrison. Almost entirely comprised of archival footage and monochromatic stills, the film tells the story of its own existence and does so in exhaustive detail. Fortunately, it’s an incredible story to tell.
Only James Comey could be expected to remember...

"It was an incredible story.." Kino Lorber has debuted the official trailer for a very unique cinema history documentary titled Dawson City: Frozen Time, that is a must-see for any die-hard fans of silent films. This beautiful doc tells the bizarre true story of a lost silent film collection, lost for over 50 years until being discovered buried in a sub-arctic swimming pool deep in the Yukon Territory. Dawson City is a gold rush town located about 350 miles south of the Arctic Circle in Canada, situated at the confluence of the Klondike and Yukon rivers and rests on a bed of permafrost. It was the "end of a film distribution line", and movies became popular in the town despite its distance. The old reels were discovered by a construction company in 1978, then recovered and restored. The film features a lovely original score composed by Alex Somers, from Sigur Ros, who also scored Captain Fantastic.

In 1978, a construction crew breaking ground for a rec center found something completely unexpected buried under ice and debris in an old mining town in the Yukon: a cache of lost nitrate films from 1910s and 20s Hollywood.
Gold was discovered in Dawson City in 1896, leading to a gold rush that caused the town’s population to boom. Dawson City became the end of a film distribution line that sent prints of films and newsreels to the Yukon. More often than not, the films were never returned, and many of them were thought lost forever.
As the first trailer shows ahead of a release next month, Bill Morrison’s documentary Dawson City: Frozen Time digs into the story of the lost films, telling the story almost entirely through clips from the re-discovered films, as well as archival footage, interviews, historical photographs, all set to score by Sigur Rós collaborator and composer Alex Somers.

Dash Shaw on His Influences and the Process of Creating ‘My Entire High School Sinking Into The Sea’
My Entire High School Sinking Into The Sea is more than just another animated comedy full of high school angst. Written and directed by Dash Shaw with a voice cast that includes Jason Schwartzman, Reggie Watts, Maya Rudolph, Lena Dunham, John Cameron Mitchell, and Susan Sarandon, the film enjoyed an acclaimed run on last fall’s festival circuit, premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival and going on to screen at Fantastic Fest and the New York Film Festival. As the film arrives in limited release courtesy of Gkids, we spoke with the filmmaker about the inspiration behind and process of bringing the semi-autobiographical, small-budget high school adventure comedy to the big screen.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that HBO plans to quietly wind down Game of Thrones just because of the reduced episode count; if anything, the final, truncated two seasons will give showrunners the ability to “break boundaries” through the use of cutting-edge CGI and new camera techniques.
That’s according to Kit Harington, whose Jon Snow quite literally received a new lease of life in Game of Thrones season 6. Now appointed King of the North, Harington has spoke at length about the monumental encounters that await in this year’s seventh season, and during a recent interview with the Huffington Post (via Comic Book), the actor touched base on the scale and scope of Game of Thrones season 7, and why it’s shaping up to be the biggest yet – even if it’s technically the shortest.

"No one knows how hard it is... You can never tell who your enemies are. Or who to trust." Focus Features has unveiled the first official trailer for the drama The Zookeeper's Wife, set during the beginning of World War II. The film stars Jessica Chastain as Antonina Żabińska, and Johan Heldenbergh as Dr. Jan Żabiński, the owners of the Warsaw Zoo in Poland, who do all they can to defend the zoo and save the animals when the Nazis invade. The full cast includes Daniel Brühl as the Reich's newly appointed chief zoologist, as well as Iddo Goldberg, Efrat Dor, Shira Haas, Michael McElhatton and Val Maloku. Aside from all the adorable animals in this, it looks like a heartfelt story of compassionate people trying to do their best to save lives in the middle of a horrible time. I love the use of Sigur Ros, it elevates this further.

In 2011, Alma Har’el won the Best Documentary Feature Award at the Tribeca Film Festival for her doc Bombay Beach. Now just five years later, Har’el is back with another documentary at Tribeca, called Love True. Grammatically it may incorrect but visually, it astounds the audience’s eyes with amazing aesthetics of the past, present, and future of three characters.
What makes the film remarkably poignant is not only the subject matter, but rather the story between Har’el and executive producer Shia Labeouf. At the time of filming, Har’el was going through a bitter divorce with her filmmaker husband, and she talks about the struggle between what the film showed and her actual life.
But how did Labeouf come to work together with Har’el? After going through a bad relationship of his own, he was searching through movies and found Har’el’s Bombay Beach in...

Like all classic dramas, Game of Thrones comes with a booming soundtrack fit for a king. The opening sequence is as epic as the events which take place after it, and it’s mostly down to the rousing strings and hammering drums bellowing from behind the graphics.
Music is a big part of the Seven Kingdoms, with much of the world’s history remembered through song, with ominous snippets of The Rains Of Castamere being forever remembered for building up to the mega Red Wedding. Since then, that song has foreshadowed many deaths, violent encounters, and all-out slaughters.
One of the musicians during that infamous scene was Coldplay drummer Will Champion, and another famous cameo was Sigur Ros playing at Joffrey’s wedding, much to the dismay of the vicious young king, but the writers don’t even need to draft in musical talent, because they already have it within their ranks.

UK documentary festival opened with Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Look Of Silence.
A record number of delegates are expected to attend the 2015 edition of Sheffield Doc/Fest, which opened Friday night (July 5) with Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Look Of Silence.
A total of 903 delegates registered on the first day of the festival, which kicked off with the UK premiere of Oppenheimer’s follow-up to Oscar-nominated The Act of Killing. It is the largest number of delegates to register on the first day of Doc/Fest and means the festival is on track to beat last year’s figure of 3200 delegates in all.
The Look Of Silence, which received a standing ovation from the Sheffield audience, was attended by Oppenheimer and the film’s subject, Adi Rukon.
Also screening last night at Sheffield’s City Hall was the world premiere of Icelandic director Benedikt Erlingsson’s The Greatest Shows on Earth: A Century of Vaudeville, Circuses and Carnivals...

When Cameron Crowe is firing on all cylinders, you can expect a few things from his films: great dialogue, sparkling chemistry between the cast, and great tunes. And while we'll have to wait for the full movie to weigh in on the first two points, on the latter, things are promising. Two new songs by Jónsi & Alex will feature on the soundtrack that will also include Hawaiian music legends Genoa Keawe and The Royal Hawaiian Serenaders, along with tracks by Beck, David Crosby, Fleetwood Mac, Kurt Vile, Josh Ritter, The Tallest Man on Earth, and more. Not too shabby. And today a couple new clips have arrived. Released digitally today and on CD August 14, the original soundtrack for Sundance 2012 drama "Luv" features 18 original tracks from Portuguese composer Nuno Malo. Recorded with the Budapest Symphony in Hungary, the score tracks "a cinematic emotional journey for a boy and his conflicted Uncle. The nostaglia of Icelandic band Sigur Ros and the unsettling bass beats of Baltimore's BlaqStarr are the textures of the movie I wanted audiences to feel," says director Sheldon Candis. The soundtrack can be found on iTunes here and Amazon here. In celebration of its release, the film has released two new limited edition art prints, which fans can tweet...

Italian director Paolo Sorrentino knows his contemporary indie music, and even in a movie like “The Great Beauty,” filled with sonorous opera, vocal ensemble, and classical music, he still manages to sneak in some Esg, Damien Jurado, Decoder Ring, and Gui Boratto’s Kompact Records version of “Take My Breath Away.” The director also clearly has affection for classic post-punk influenced music. His 2011 film, “This Must Be the Place” (named after a Talking Heads song), featured Sean Penn in a role that appeared to be a thin disguise for The Cure’s Robert Smith, and its soundtrack featured artists like David Byrne, Will Oldham, Jonsi from Sigur Ros, Iggy Pop, and more. His latest film, “Youth,” which just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival (read our review here), has its own hip score. The film features Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Weisz, and Paul Dano and centers on two aging friends,...

Floria Sigismondi is perhaps best known for music video work, which has seen her collaborate with musicians and bands like David Bowie, Sigur Ros, Fiona Apple, Leonard Cohen, and more. But in 2010 she unveiled her feature directorial debut, "The Runaways," a somewhat underrated picture about the cult rock 'n roll band anchored by a flamboyant turn by Michael Shannon. Since then, she's had a couple of projects brewing away, but now her next one is set up. Variety reports that Sigismondi will direct an adaptation of Alejandro Jodorosky and Francois Boucq’s comic series "Bouncer." While Jodorowsky is known for his more fantastical work, this is actually a straight up western about the adventures of a gunslinger and saloon bouncer. We're really intrigued to see what the visually stylish Sigismondi can bring the genre. Promising stuff and likely more news on the horizon as this will start production in early...

"How to Train Your Dragon 2" followed up its Golden Globe win with Asifa Hollywood's top prize at the 42nd annual Annie Awards Saturday night at UCLA's Royce Hall. The Oscar contender from beleaguered DreamWorks Animation won six Annies (also for director Dean DeBlois, character animation, editing, storyboarding and music by John Powell and Jonsi). What this means exactly for the Oscar race is still unclear because the BAFTA winner has historically gone on to win the Oscar for best animated feature and "Dragon 2" isn't even nominated. So unless "The Lego Movie" plays spoiler again, helping "Dragon 2," a win for either "Big Hero 6" or "The Boxtrolls" would shift momentum once again. DeBlois explained the personal importance of "Dragon 2" to me backstage: "This film is personal to me in the sense that I was 19 when my father passed away as well, so what Hiccup goes through in...

Shia Labeouf's choreography lessons for his nude-and-dancing appearance in Sigur Ros' "Fjögur Píanó" music video has helped him to double down: the actor/director co-stars in yet another dancing-oriented video, this time for Sia's "Elastic Heart." Sia's pint-sized stand-in Maddie Ziegler -- who stole and crushed hearts in the "Chandelier" music vid -- offers another outstanding performance. Let's compare "Elastic Heart" to "Chandelier": Shia may have saved up all that crying he did in "Fury" in a little jar and reintroduced it here, but as a combo, I'm moved. And now let's compare "Elastic Heart" to "Fjögur Píanó": I have bruises and I don't even know how I got them. And while we're on the subject of dirty dancing: compare the filth and fight of "Elastic Heart" to Pink's incredible " I'm exhausted now, aren't you? For all the public provocation Shia Labeouf did in 2014, the new year brought with it a nice surprise from the 28-year-old Fury actor. And what a difference a year makes. Labeouf is exquisitely wordless opposite 11-year-old dance phenom Maddie Ziegler in Sia’s music video for “Elastic Heart,” his latest filmed art project after baring it all in a 2012 Sigur Ros video.
It’s also the second impressive recent turn for Ziegler, the stunning soloist from Sia’s “Chandelier” video that went viral last summer and has notched 432 million views to date. Yes, we know it's 2015 already, but since the New Year fell in the middle of the week this time, we figured ending the week with one more retrospective video wouldn't hurt anyone (especially since my Top 10 Films of 2014 is still coming later today). This time it's editor Ben Zuk rounding up just under 150 films from the year into the impressively edited 2014 Salute to Cinema, using some of the year's best soundtrack music to fuel the video. In June 2014, moviegoers traveled to the village of Berk once again in How To Train Your Dragon 2. The film’s composer, John Powell, recently won Best Score – Animated Film for the movie at 5th Annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards.
Powell has scored films including Antz, Chicken Run, Shrek, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and X-Men: The Last Stand and has frequently collaborated with directors Doug Liman and Paul Greengrass, on films including the Bourne trilogy, United 93 and Green Zone.
His infectious score for How To Train Your Dragon earned him his first Academy Award nomination. Powell has also lent his voice to the score of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, and Ice Age 4: Continental Drift. Most recently, audiences heard his music on the scores to Rio 2, directed by Carlos Saldanha, as well as the Dragon 2 sequel.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 is seriously one of the best movies this year. As much as I loved the first film, this sequel is so much better in every way. DreamWorks Animation has released a new featurette for the animated flick, and it focuses on the music that was created for the feature. The score was composed by John Powell (Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon) along with the help of Sigur Ros frontman Jonsi. What they created for this film is beautiful. The music really nails the emotion of the characters. When the score is done right it makes the movie that much better. How to Train Your Dragon 2 hits theaters on June 13th, and it's a must watch! This weekend, in addition to the raucous comedy of 22 Jump Street, families will have some entertainment with another sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2.
