Stars and recording artists showed up in force for the premiere of Apple Music’s documentary Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives, on Tuesday night in Los Angeles.
“Clive Davis will always be relevant because he’s very forward-thinking. He’s never behind, he’s ahead,” said Ralph Johnson of Earth, Wind & Fire on the black carpet outside the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood.
Naturally, all of the artists in attendance sang the music mogul’s praises. When asked about Davis’ greatest achievement, Carlos Santana couldn’t pick just one: “Vision. Tenacity. Conviction,” the legendary guitarist told The Hollywood Reporter. “And he trusts his...

It all began at the Tribeca Film Festival in April. The Clive Davis documentary kicked off the festival’s opening night, with a world premiere, red carpet event celebrating his life’s work. Radio City Music Hall was filled with music legends, who performed for Davis after the documentary was screened. Davis had signed them all during his 50 years in the music industry, and they were there to celebrate in style…with music. Aretha Franklin, Barry Manilow, Dionne Warwick, Carly Simon, Earth, Wind, & Fire, and Jennifer Hudson performed some of the hits which made them famous. The audience surrounding Davis had

Theatrical releases can still work for documentaries, argued the Doc/Fest panel.
In a panel at Sheffield Doc/Fest, experts from the American documentary sector said Netflix or Amazon are not always the best options for releasing documentary features.
The panellists were: Ben Braun from New York-based production, distribution and sales agency Submarine, Marie Nelson from PBS, Simon Chinn from London and La-based production company Lightbox, Molly Thompson from A&E IndieFilms and Mark Leaver from department for international trade.
Thompson said she was proud that A&E IndieFilm partnered with theatrical distributors for projects like The Imposter, Cartel Land (pictured) and Matthew Heineman’s follow-up City of Ghosts (screening at Doc/Fest) before their respective VOD and television premieres.
“I have seen great films that went on Svod immediately, and they disappeared quickly. How many people actually saw Nina [Simone] or 13th in theatres? I think that is a shame,” said Thompson...

Clive Davis may be a legendary music mogul, but according to the documentary “Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives,” he’s basically a god. This glossy, authorized portrait of Davis’ crucial role in the careers of major pop artists from the sixties through today spends roughly 120 minutes cycling through the timeline of Davis’ career, as appreciative stars shower him with praise in a constant loop.
Director Chris Perkel, who also edited, hasn’t made a movie so much as a prolonged tribute reel with ample material to fuel a dozen lifetime achievement award ceremonies. Anyone unfamiliar with Davis’ accomplishments will certainly learn more than a few of them, but that’s where the strength of “The Soundtrack of Our Lives” ends.
Of course, Davis’ contributions to pop music across multiple generations is formidable, and the movie doesn’t need to do much aside from sharing performance footage of these figures to make that case.

Kicking off tonight with an all-star Radio City concert following the premiere of the Clive Davis doc, The Soundtrack of Our Lives, the Tribeca Film Festival once more offers a near-overwhelming array of new work spread across not just film but TV, Vr, gaming and music. The program has been slimmed down this year, say the programmers, but the below list of works we’re excited about could still stretch many times fold. Nonetheless, from myself and our various Tribeca contributors this year, here are 28 works we have reason to excitedly anticipate. The Departure. Lana Wilson follows up her abortion […]...

Clive Davis says that no subject was off limits for the documentary Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives, based on his best-selling memoir — and that includes Whitney Houston. The singer, who died on Feb. 11, 2012 (the day of Davis' annual Grammy party), after a long battle with substance abuse, takes up 25 minutes of the planned two-hour, Chris Perkel-directed film. Davis doesn't shy away from the roller coaster of her addictions, and in a clip seen by The Hollywood Reporter, the legendary music mogul reads a letter that he wrote to Houston the day
