Derek Hough is sharing his latest passion project.
The 31-year-old dancer took to Instagram on Tuesday, posting a gorgeous black-and-white dance video. But unlike most of his video posts, which feature him doing most of the dancing, Hough turned the tables by belting out a cover of Breaking Benjamin's "Ashes of Eden."
Featuring beautiful contemporary choreography by So You Think You Can Dance alum Rudy Abreu, Hough showcases a few moves here and there, but keeps the focus on his pipes. In his caption for the video, he revealed to fans that he actually recorded this after undergoing vocal cord surgery.
"Last year I lost my voice and had to have surgery to fix my vocal cords. I couldn't speak a single word for over a month. Not even a whisper," he wrote. "This forced me into a place of listening and stillness. Within that place...

Opening with stark blue fuzz that bring back memories to the days before digital cable when you could watch music videos late at night, during breakfast, and really any time, Phonogram #1 shows that it and its characters are rooted in the past even as they decry all things retro. For those who haven’t read the previous two volumes (published in 2007 and 2009), the basic premise of the comic is that the characters (called phonomancers) in Phonogram can use music to make magic. Writer Kieron Gillen and artist Jamie McKelvie delve into a variety of genres, including pop, alternative, hip hop, and punk to show how our taste in music defines us as humans and can evolve (or not...

While the industry’s heavy-hitters have been battling for their stake of the E3 mindshare, developer Harmonix quietly confirmed that Rock Band 4 will debut on October 6 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Those who wish to pre-order the long-awaited sequel will be pleased to note that securing a copy of the rhythm title ahead of time will open up an additional 34 tracks, according to Amazon. Said songs will include the likes of “Don’t Wanna Fight” by Alabama Shakes, “Failure” by Breaking Benjamin and “Follow Me Down” by The Pretty Reckless.
In terms of hardware, high-street retailers such as GameStop have opened up full band bundles for an eye-watering $249.99 – one that includes the drum set, the microphone, one guitar and of course, a copy of Rock Band 4 itself. Bear in mind that Harmonix’s sequel will support old peripherals, so I guess we better get to dusting off those old instruments before October.

The WWE Nxt brand continues to grow as they were announced as part of the Aftershock music festival in Sacramento, California on October 24 & 25. It’s a different kind of venue for WWE’s developmental system that is growing as an alternative WWE show.
The last time WWE Nxt was in Sacramento was during WrestleMania weekend when they drew an impressive crowd of 5,000 people for a Friday night show.
Its interesting to note that in the WWE.com release about the show, they didn’t mention current Nxt champion Kevin Owens. It’s very possible that Owens might only be on the WWE main roster by that point, so that’s why they failed to mention him even though he would be one of the biggest names if he was there.
The graphic they used features current Nxt Champion Sasha Banks, top diva Charlotte and one of the top male wrestlers Finn Balor.

Fans of alternative rock were hit with bad news when Scranton based band Breaking Benjamin broke up in 2011. The lead singer Ben Burnley faced legal issues with former band members who went behind his back releasing a greatest hits. It was rumored for years that they had internal issues before it became open to the public with the release of Shallow Bay: The Best of Breaking Benjamin. Well, those years are behind them as Ben brought back the band with a new line up. This has caused much distress among original (and mostly local) fans who supported the band when Aaron Fink, Mark Klepaski and Chad Szeliga remained members. It died down after a while as Ben took time away from the industry. Now it appears that with the new single “Failure”, a battle between the old and newer fans has become reheated. Let’s take a closer look at...

American Idol Top 7 Perform: What Makes Idol Beautiful
Before I actually get to the show, I'd like to apologize for missing last week's results recap. Unfortunately lack of Internet plus a holiday weekend made for busy times. I can't say that I was terribly surprised by Deandre's exit. And I can't say I'll be shocked at whoever gets booted tonight, because 'Songs from this Decade' night on American Idol turned out pretty well.
Before I get to any specifics on performances, I'd like to hand out some advice for all the contestants. Stop picking obvious songs. If there was one constant for most of the night, it was that every performance had a certain predictability to it. This was good in some ways, as it reemphasized that the contestants left on American Idol know who they are, and that they can sing songs that are on today's charts. On the other hand,...

The band is preparing to release their debut album through Hollywood Records during the first quarter of 2012. Duran's guest appearance in the Breaking Benjamin song 'Blow Me Away' and Valora's debut music video for 'I Waited For You' are quickly becoming huge hits. Watch the Throne stays at #1, despite 59 percent drop in sales.

After an impressive debut week on the Billboard 200 chart, Kanye West and Jay-z's collaborative effort Watch the Throne, will once again sit at the top. Adding to the 436,000 copies they sold last week, the hip-hop dynamos moved another 177,000 this week, bringing their current total to 613,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures.
While the Throne won't get bragging rights to 2011's biggest first-week seller on the Billboard charts (that honor still belongs to Lady Gaga), they successfully beat Coldplay's Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends record for one-week sales on iTunes. And needless to say, they've claimed the #1 spot on iTunes once again.
Though the second week of Watch the Throne saw a 59 percent drop in sales, it was enough to hold off chart newcomers. None of the week's debuts saw six-digit sales,...

The rock band, which consists of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Benjamin Burnley and drummer and percussionist, Chad Szeliga, have released four studio albums, since their formation in the late 90s. The time has come for the duo to compile some of the tracks off of “Saturate”, “We Are Not Alone”, “Phobia” and “Dear Agony” to form one cohesive album that represents their decade long career. Compilations, like “Shallow Bay: The Best of Breaking Benjamin”, are pieces of musical history all wrapped up into a single CD. So, in our opinion,...

Breaking Benjamin, who are currently in hiatus, have broken up. Frontman and founding member Benjamin Burnley fired guitarist Aaron Fincke and bassist Mark Klepaski, and took legal action against them for allegedly remixing the group's song "Blow Me Away" without consent.
The dispute over the song remix erupted in May, and ended up with Burnley firing Fincke and Klepaski via e-mail. In the lawsuit document filed in June, Burnley claimed his two former bandmates signed a deal with Hollywood Records to remix their song without his consent. In compensation, he is seeking $250,000.
Also, Burnley is entitled, under the band's partnership agreement, to retain exclusive ownership of the band's name. However, Fincke and Klepaski counter backed the statement. They argued that the agreement they made in 2009 about Burnley having permission to dismiss them for "cause" had been invalid since the band took hiatus in June 2010 due to his illness.

A greatest hits collection has been a go-to-purchase of ours for as long as we can remember. These specific albums allow new fans, usually of a different generation, to discover a band’s chart topping music. For old fans, the collection will let you listen to your favorite songs without switching the CD. A greatest hits album makes it easier for fans, old and new, to access the band’s music, but for a band to have this type of album out, a considerable amount of hard work had to occur in the prior years before its creation. Take the career of the multi-platinum band, Breaking Benjamin, for example. The rock group...

According to Nielsen SoundScan, Billboard.com has released the top selling 50 hard rock albums for the entire year, although not all albums were actually released in 2010. Canadian rock outfit Nickelback has taken the first overall spot with their album Darkhorse, a record they released in 2008. To date the album has sold over 5 million copies and was ranked #191 on Billboard's top 200 albums of the decade. Darkhorse has stayed on the Billboard top 200 sales chart for a 105 consecutive weeks. 01. Dark Horse - Nickelback 02. A Thousand Suns - Linkin Park 03. Iron Man 2 (Soundtrack) - AC/DC 04. HollywoodNews.com: In a fast and furious 10 months, “Awake,” the latest album from Atlantic recording group Skillet, has been certified gold by the RIAA for sales in excess of 500,000. The album – which includes two Active Rock radio blockbusters in the top 5 hit, “Monster,” and the top 12 smash, “Hero” – continues to reign as a hard rock favorite, standing strong in the upper half of the Billboard 200. The band is also set to release their next single and video for “Awake & Alive” in the coming weeks.
Produced by Howard Benson (Three Days Grace, Daughtry, Flyleaf), Awake reached the #1 spot on the iTunes Store’s “Top Albums” chart within 24 hours of its release last August. The album also made a blockbuster debut on the SoundScan/Billboard 200, entering the chart at #2.
Skillet’s headline tours ranked with Pollstar’s Concert Pulse Top 50 Tours and recently landed the band on the cover of the magazine.

British rockers take on My Chemical Romance after pounding the White Stripes.

Sort of a stripped-down version of Michigan's famed Fab Five (since, you know, there are only three of them), Muse mauled the competition with a game that's equal parts finesse and pound-n-ground, highlighted by the fleet-fingered shredding and multi-octave range of guitarist/frontman Matthew Bellamy and the pummeling, precise combo of drummer Dominic Howard and bassist Christopher Wolstenholme, perhaps the best frontcourt in the tourney.

It's Musical March Madness! The sprawling bracket — both a parody and a tribute to the Ncaa basketball tournament, masterminded by MTV News' James Montgomery — takes the 65 biggest names in rock, splits them up into four regions, assigns them seeds and puts them up against one another in a single-elimination series of match-ups in a winner-take-all contest. We're leaving it to you to decide an actual champ in this field of 65. Over the next few weeks, we will present a series of polls that will allow you to vote for the match-ups presented in MTV News' Band Bracketology. You vote for the winners, we'll keep advancing the seeds and, in the end, we'll have some sort of champion. What will the winner receive? Little more than our esteem (as well as that of the fans) and some Internet bragging rights.

Tokio Hotel, 30 Seconds to Mars and more march on in MTV News' Band Bracketology
By James Montgomery
30 Seconds to Mars are poised for domination
Photo: Nigel Crane/ Redferns
We started MTV News' Musical March Madness with 64 bands (well, 65 if you count Against Me!), whittled it down to 32 last week, and now, after hundreds of thousands of votes — and nearly as many ticked-off fans — we've reached the Sweet 16.
Much like the real Ncaa tourney, we had upsets, buzzer beaters and even an overtime tilt or two. After some heated, back-and-forth battles, we had heavyweights going down and Cinderella bands dancing on. One of these remaining bands will be crowned champion — and, once again, it'll be up to you to determine who makes it to the Elite Eight.
You can view the updated Band Bracket here, and Sweet 16 voting is now open on the Newsroom blog. Polls will close Tuesday night, so you'd better get cracking.

I'm going to be honest: I didn't expect this — any of this — to happen.
Last week, when I wrote my "Musical March Madness" column, I did it mostly because I love college basketball, gambling and superfluous list-making. I made my selections largely at random. I left out a whole bunch of bands I probably shouldn't have (Linkin Park, Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails — two powerhouses inexplicably relegated to the Nit, sort of like North Carolina and UConn). I drew up a bracket by hand, for crying out loud.
I was not prepared for what happened next. Somehow, my sprawling, slightly stupid project became a fairly big deal, getting coverage on places like NPR and even The Ethiopian Review, and inspiring bands to rally...

Look, I love college. I love basketball. And I love gambling. So March Madness is sort of like Christmas, Thanksgiving and my 21st birthday all rolled into one. For one glorious month, I am overjoyed, overstuffed and frequently make bad decisions (like picking Baylor to go to the Final Four this year). And on Sunday, as I sat on my couch watching Espn's apoplectic coverage of the 2010 Ncaa basketball tournament bracket, I had a thought: What if I combined my love of those things with my other true passion, music? (Oh, and making superfluous lists too.)

This week is a little thin on content – unless you’re really into Valentine’s Day.
That said, there’s still plenty of great content to check out – especially the public demo for Sony’s upcoming action-drama Heavy Rain (which was previously only available to players following the “Four Days” alternate reality game). Don’t forget to check out our impressions of the demo – and keep an eye out for our review of the full game when it’s released on February 24th.
Also, if you have yet to pick up a theme for your PS3 make sure to check out the dynamic themes for Flower and WipeOut HD. You can preview them on the Psn Store before you buy – they’re both pretty impressive.
Here is the full list of release information:

The futuristic thriller "Surrogates" starring Bruce Willis hit DVD and Blu-ray last week. Blockbuster announced that the Jonathan Mostow-directed film ("Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines") was the #1 rental last week, beating out "Michael Jackson's This Is It."
"Surrogates" takes place in 2017 in a future where humans are never leaving the safety of their own homes. Instead, robotic "surrogates" are being remote controlled from home to live their lives for them, including working, socializing, and even intimacy. The surrogates are designed as even better-looking versions of themselves, and they're free from feeling fear and pain.
In the film, Bruce Willis stars as FBI agent Greer, a cop who hasn't left his home in years until the first murder takes place in their near-utopian world and his own surrogate is destroyed. Greer, enlisting the help of another agent (Radha Mitchell), has to investigate the murder of someone who helped create the surrogate technology.

In Surrogates not too distance future, most of earth’s population will fold laundry, drop off the kids and do the horizontal jiggy through remote-controlled robots called surrogates. Humanoid in its appearance, the technology allows their human operators the safety and relaxation of knowing that they’re protected within the confines of their home while their better-looking extensions are taking care of business. Whatever business that is, is practically up to the operator.
Violent crime, class and race issues have been erased from daily lives along with other annoyances such as looking ugly and dealing with blemishes. Times are great for this wacky dystopian look at us until two operators die when their fancy surries are destroyed. Luckily for humanity, FBI agents Thomas Greer (Bruce Willis) and Jennifer Peters (Radha Mitchell) are on the case.
Mixed in with the twists and turns of the story are surrogates creator Dr. Lionel...

A great graphic novel becomes a better than average sci-fi action thriller and this better than average sci-fi action thriller also makes a dynamite Blu-ray release. Aside from looking almost perfect the extras here are awesome offering a lot of food for thought for repeat viewings. Surrogates will probably garner those viewings from those interested in its major theme ie: the increasing distance our technologies seem to create between individuals.
If you haven't read the original graphic novel (and its excellent prequel) do so immediately. You'll see that a lot of effort was expended here attempting to capture the heart and soul of this fascinating future noir. But Surrogates the film changes just enough of the original material to make itself look and feel run of the mill and it's also worth noting that Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell are well cast in their lead roles while the rest of...

One year, three wide release films about living by proxy. Gamer and Surrogates may have gotten there first, but I think we can all agree Avatar has left them both as distant memories of 2009’s cinematic past. Luckily, or unluckily, cinematic pasts can be relived via DVD and Blu-ray. Surrogates, like its counterparts, imagines a world where humanity no longer requires a direct interface with the world, now we can strap into a machine and have robotic versions of ourselves live out our lives. Surrogates succeeds as a fun exercise in “what if?” science fiction, but as a piece of entertainment it’s disappointingly stale in its storytelling. For all its special effects wizardry, a minefield of plotholes and expository nonsense hinders its progress at every turn.
Just like in Gamer, Surrogates circles around the brainchild invention of a tech-guru (James Cromwell), which pioneers a new way of living: Surrogacy.

Surrogates
Directed by: Jonathan Mostow
Cast: Bruce Willis, Rosamund Pike, Ving Rhames, James Cromwell
Running Time: 89 mins
Rating: PG-13
Due Out: January 26, 2010
Plot: In 2017, human beings stay in their rooms all day and lets robotic clones do their work, live their lives, etc. A federal agent (Bruce Willis) races against time to stop a scheme that would kill both the surrogates and their users.
Who’S It For?: This would appease the mindless action fans more than the science-fiction futuristic story buffs. Philip K. Dick, this is not.
Movie:
Another movie that claims the uprising of technology will be the downfall of humans and their communication, Surrogates is a sci-fi actioner that is itself robotic, and doesn’t work very hard to protect itself from such a convenient metaphor. The usage of such human-looking androids (surrogates) can only do so much to excuse the film’s overall stiff performances,...

Three Days Grace reigned Billboard's Rock Songs chart in 2009 with their single "Break". They won over the likes of Breaking Benjamin, Muse, Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters and Shinedown among others.
In addition, "Break" also marks their return to No. 1 spot of Billboard's Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. This band previously ruled the chart with "Pain", which is taken from their second album "One-x", in December 2006.
"Break" appears in the band's third studio project "Life Starts Now". The track tells about the band's effort to break away from bad influences. "It's pretty much just breaking out and letting loose. Action superstar Bruce Willis (the Die Hard franchise) headlines another spectacular thrill ride in the gripping film Surrogates, coming to Blu-ray® Hi-Def and DVD on January 26, 2010 from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. Directed by Jonathan Mostow (Terminator Three: Rise of the Machines, U-571), Surrogates is a heart-pounding futuristic tale of splintered identity, treachery and murder. Both DVD and Blu-ray editions come with an array of bonus features that not only invite viewers to delve deep into the darkly imaginative world of Surrogates, but describe how this futuristic idea is not such a far-off reality.
