Sinclair Broadcast Group was poised to act yesterday after the FCC cleared the way for some TV station mergers by restoring the so-called Uhf discount. The broadcaster announced this morning a two-part deal valued at $240.0 million. Sinclair picked up Bonten Media Group Holdings, which owns 14 television stations in 8 markets. In addition, Cunningham Broadcasting — controlled by trusts for the children of Sinclair founder Julian Smith — will pick up the membership…...

Salem, Oregon served as the arena for an unusual war fought between 2009 and the early 2010s: a battle for ice-cream-truck supremacy. David Wolman and Julian Smith chronicled the stranger-than-fiction skirmish in an Epic Magazine article written last year, which later inspired an episode of Radiolab. New Line has now picked up the film rights to “The Cold War,” which chronicles the years-long skirmish between rivals Dennis Roeper and Efrain Escobar.

Julian Smith is one of those online video creators who doesn't release new material very often, but his videos are always on point. Smith's latest offering is no exception. The filmmaker has written, directed, and starred in a sketch called "WiFi", which dives into a world without high-speed Internet. "WiFi" stars Smith as a man who begins to lose his mind after his Internet connection cuts out. The other cast members in the video are a trio of online video creators: Chester See, Joe Hanson, and Shane Hartline. The result combines Community-style genre parody with the fast pace viewers have come to expect from their web videos. "WiFi" is Smith's first new video in three months and only his eighth in the past year. While that is an infrequent schedule, Smith has also released another new video on Blip, as he did with "WiFi" a week before its arrival on...

This text examines the work of Pedro Almodovar, the Spanish director whose nine features to date include the comedy, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), the S & M melodrama, Tie me up! Tie me down! (1990) and the family romance, High Heels (1991). This study argues not only that Almodovar is a highly skilled manipulator of cinematic form, but also that his films raise important questions—of gender, nationality and sexuality—which demand a serious response from their audience. Desire Unlimited offers analyses derived from recent feminist, gay and postmodern theory. Desire Unlimited: The Cinema of Pedro Almodovar Author: Paul Julian Smith Edition: Paperback, 288 pages Release Date: April 12th, 2014 Price: $26.95 Publisher: Verso...

Leading directors accuse 'scared' government of political motive for slashing cinema financing
The Spanish government is conducting a vendetta against the national film industry in an attempt to destroy the creative heart of a once vital sector, according to senior industry figures, who see it as the latest round in the culture wars between right and left.
The accusations come amid some of the most draconian cuts made to state funding of Spanish cinema, which has halved in the past four years. Budget cuts introduced by the governing rightwing People's party last week mean the national cinematography fund will receive only €33m (£28m) in 2014, a 14% drop on last year, and barely enough to cover its debts.
The president of the Spanish cinema academy, Enrique González Macho, said: "This is a ridiculously small amount of money, for which there is no economic justification. The motivations are entirely political." He conceded that,...

Ray William Johnson recently made headlines by tweeting about his intention to sue Maker Studios if the multi-channel network does not return control of his Adsense account to him. Still, beyond that messy ordeal, the top YouTube creator continues to work on creating his own online video network, Runaway Planet. Now, Johnson has secured a big name platform to aid him in his new endeavor. He appeared on stage at Blip's Digital Content Newfronts presentation, where Blip CEO Kelly Day announced the company's plan to provide seed money for Runaway Planet. For Runaway Planet, Johnson is partnered with Julian Smith, who also distributes his videos through Blip. Johnson will also drop some videos on the site as part of the deal. Johnson and his girlfriend have been chronicling the genesis of Runaway Planet on a vlog channel launched earlier this year

Busy week of movie and TV watching for me beyond seeing Mama (read my review here) and The Last Stand (read my review here) in theaters. I watched Criterion's new Blu-ray for Andrei Tarkovsky's Ivan's Childhood, which I really liked and am already halfway done with my review and will have finished by Tuesday or Wednesday depending on how long it takes me to finish writing up the 2012 RopeofSilicon Awards. If you're not familiar with what the RopeofSilicon Awards are, this will be the fifth year I've declared my own selection of awards and you can see the previous four years right here. This year I am also going to bring back the vote for the best film of 2012 as I did in 2010 and 2009 and neglected to do last year. Here were the results from 2010 and 2009: 2009 2010 Inglourious Basterds Avatar Up Star Trek The Hurt Locker Up In the Air...

It's been an interesting couple of months for RayWilliamJohnson. First, he welcomed luminaries such as RZA and Key & Peele into the =3 studio for special hosting gigs. Then, he announced he was stepping away from Maker Studios due to creative differences. Now, Rwj is continuing his flurry of activity by starting his own production studio. Rwj's has been tweeting extensively about the studio, which he is launching alongside Julian Smith, the YouTube whose sketch comedy and Kidnapped series has netted him over 1.1 million subscribers and more than 254 million views. Smith recently signed a distribution deal with Blip Studios, so it looks like he'll be pulling double duty by creating some additional material for Rwj's endeavor. In an interview with NewMediaRockstars, Rwj explained what we can expect from his studio, which is named Runaway Planet. "In the short term, we all aim to create a few high-quality scripted and unscripted projects. For example,...

Blip has only been a premium content studio since July, but in less than four months they already put together a formidable originals lineup, headed by the recently launched League of Supercritics channel on YouTube. Recently, Blip announced that it is continuing to build out its partner base, signing sales and distribution deals with three popular YouTube creators: sketch comic JulianSmith, Diy guru Kipkay, and z-film expert The Cinema Snob. Julian Smith has amassed almost 250 million views on his eponymous YouTube channel, which has posted up many well received sketches. This includes Smith's most popular video, 'Malk', which I can totally sympathize with as an East Coast guy who went to school in the Midwest. Smith also created Kidnapped, a two season comedy web series that has drawn several million viewers. "Julian's a filmmaker first and foremost, and his videos all have that level of polish and production quality that...

From today through February 1, we're partnering with the My French Film Festival to show you ten recently released French features (first and second films) and ten French shorts. Presented by Unifrance, the festival invites you to award points to the films you like at the main site — and these points count, as six prizes will be awarded (three for features, three for shorts): the Internet Users Prize, Social Networks Prize and International Press Prize.
Outside of both competitions, we've also got a few extra presentations. The online festival was a hit around the world last year and you won't want to miss this second edition.
A few quick notes on the films, starting with the features:
Rebecca Zlotowski's Belle épine (Dear Prudence), winner of the prestigious Prix Louis Delluc for Best First Film, is "closer to a sobering character study than a classical youth film," finds Chris Cabin in Slant.

The new Film Quarterly is out and, of the four pieces online, the standout for me is Caetlin Benson-Allott's: "Since Marey's motion studies at the end of the 19th century, film has been a tool for providing visible evidence, a record of things seen. The development of digital imaging technology over the past twenty years has transformed that original empirical function. Advancements in CGI enable convincing depictions of things impossible to see in everyday life: dinosaurs, hobbits, viruses. It has become necessary to speak of 'hypervisibility' to describe the way movies can realistically render such previously hard-to-envision phenomena. Steven Soderbergh's Contagion tries to contest this prevailing logic by insisting on the limits of visibility."

"The Skin I Live In is Almodóvar's most formally complex, bravura film since All About My Mother (1999)," argues Amy Taubin in Artforum. "It effortlessly synthesizes the mad-scientist horror flick; a contemporary resetting of a nineteenth-century grand opera narrative (motored by the desire for revenge and filled with dark family secrets); and the most perverse strain of the Hollywood 'Woman's Picture,' where the heroines are wrongly imprisoned in insane asylums or hospitals and treated as sadistically as lab rats. That it is a disturbing film goes without saying, but its affect is strikingly narcotic throughout, its moments of anguish tempered by the Carnivalesque…. The Skin I Live In is an exhilarating treatise on identity in which the self transcends the fragile, sullied flesh, and, as always in Almodóvar, the law of desire trumps sexual difference."

"Ah, the pungent odor, the fermented esprit, the sulfurous insanity of the New York Asian Film Fest!" exclaims Michael Atkinson, introducing his overview of the lineup in the Voice. "It's a new year for the city's favorite attack of the imported-irrational, and as always, the jejune state of the late-spring/early-summer box office gets a shot in the ass. The pulp is especially ripe this year, particularly from Japan, where manga-ness seems to have gone from a national pastime to a mass psychosis."

Britain’s Got Talent hopefuls Dance Flavourz consists of 12 Brazilian Samba dancers, 11 females and 1 male. Francis the male dancer and spokesperson for the group trained as a dancer in Portugal when he was 14. After their London audition (shown on last Saturday’s show) Piers Morgan gushed “That was really, really special and you are utterly compelling to watch.”
The dance troupe returned for tonight’s semi final show and promised to wow the crowd and the judges with their energetic routine. They emerged on a huge silver elephant and their routine started off well, however Francis felt the need to sing and ruin the illusion with his tuneless crooning. We were truly shocked that none of the judges buzzed. The Chippendoubles were much more amusing than these guys.
Judges Comments:
Piers Morgan: I think you are just favbulous. It’s an explosion of colour and bottoms and everything is going off.

The leader of Britain’s Got Talent hopefuls Dance Flavourz has admitted that he already has a wealth of TV experience.
The group impressed Simon Cowell with their carnival themed performance at their recent audition and will perform again on tonight’s semi final.

He added: “We love Latin groups and artists like Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin.
“We get inspiration from big Bollywood productions and anything which features singing, dancing, fashion and colour.”

The Fusion dance group is made up of 15 members, all from Dancepoint Dance School which was set up by Robert Hamilton 8 years ago.
During their first audition for the show they turned up dressed as witches and Piers Morgan enthused:
“The costumes were very inventive, the choreography was fantastic. It was really quite sinister, you are a scary bunch.”
Simon Cowell wasn’t as impressed and admitted that he ‘didn’t get’ the group, so they had an uphill struggle tonight in their efforts to impress him.
Instead of a witch themed routine, tonight the girls went with a pirate themed dance, however we couldn’t see a big difference between them and dance troupe Ice who performed earlier in the show. The judges didn’t love Ice, so we were sure that The Fusion weren’t going to do much better. How wrong were we?

Tyler Patterson is a 10 year old freestyle dancer who was born is Glasgow. He has been dancing for a year and a half taught himself different moves which he learned from MTV videos.
It would have been easy to miss Tyler during his recent audition show, as he was featured in a very short segment….blink and you missed it. So he had an uphill battle tonight as he tried to make an impression on the British public.
To put this in context, Tyler is about one year older than my eight (and 3/4) year old daughter. She’s still playing ring a ring a rosies around the kitchen, so the fact that Tyler as such amazing dancing skills at such a young age astounded us tonight.

Britain’s Got Talent returns tomorrow night for it’s fourth semi final (yes its’ been a long week for us reality TV geeks!) and we have the full lineup of the show.
Unless there is a massive shift in public opinion, the result is already thoroughly predictable. Singing Grandma Janey Cutler is in the lineup so surely she’ll be one of the acts to progress to Saturday night’s final?
Check out the full list of acts below.
Ice: Ice are a 14 strong street dance group from Rotherham in South Yorkshire and they have been together for 2 years. Simon Cowell wasn’t blown away by their first audition performance. He said “I thought overall it was well done. I have a slight problem…you are being choreographed from other people which always for me makes it slightly less real. It’s got a dance school element to it.

Street dance troupe Peridot closed tonight’s Britain’s Got Talent semi final.
They are a troupe of 9 boys who have been together for the last 4 years. Peridot auditioned for the show back in 2009, but failed to make the live rounds. So they needed to make their performance tonight really count if they didn’t want to be eliminated again.
The troupe took to the stage dressed in snazzy blue jackets, white trousers and grey ties and looked very different to other dance troupes who normally stick to a more casual attire. We liked their routine a lot, but apparently the judges didn’t feel the same.
Judge Comments:
Piers Morgan: I really like you guys my disappointment tonight was that there wasn’t enough dancing. It was a lot of body popping but not enough genuine street dancing for me.

Two more acts have gone through to the Britain’s Got Talent live final on Saturday.
After impressing Simon Cowell with an amazing human/animal dance routine, dog trainer Tina and her talented canine, Chandi, were the most popular act on the show this evening. They were voted straight through to the final by the public.
In runner-up position were singing doorman Neil Fullard and aspiring boyband Connected. Piers Morgan was unequivocal in his support for the teenage band, but both Amanda Holden and Simon struggled with their choice. Amanda eventually opted for Neil’s crooner stylings while Simon eventually swung the panel in favour of Connected.

Check out the judges comments for all the acts featured in tonight’s show below.

Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden promised us some strange acts on this year’s Britain’s Got Talent and we can tell you that Saturday night’s show will not disappoint.
Along with Max the parrot who won’t eat his mashed potatoes, viewers will be treated to a flash of some old mens bums (check out the picture of the Cheeky Boys above), a pair of sisters known as ‘Double Take’ who play the Timbrel and take umbrage when Simon Cowell tells them its a ‘tambourine with Christmas decorations’, Persephene Lewin who plays an instrument made out of a hose pipe, a teapot and a penguin glove puppet and Michael Lavender, the 71 year old retired teacher who now does impressions of unusual jungle animals.
Also appearing is David Churcher who recites rubbish poetry over classical music, Pipes and Brums – a husband and wife act who play the bodhrán and...

Britain’s Got Talent presenters Ant & Dec have admitted that some of the acts auditioning for the show still shock them.
Claiming that they never meet the performers before they audition, Dec told the show’s official website:
“We genuinely have no idea what is coming next. The acts walk around the corner or we see them in the holding room and we have no idea what to expect.”
“You’d think not a lot could shock us, but every now and again something will come along and you’ll go, ‘Do you know what? I wasn’t expecting that!’
“There is always something that comes every year where you think, ‘How on earth did you come up with the idea of that act’ and ‘I’ve never ever seen anything like that before?’”
Ant added: “It’s great to be back by the side of the stage. Last year,...

Web sensation Susan Boyle might have lost "Britain's Got Talent" because of the Internet. According to new reports, SuBo was a victim of an alleged YouTube scam.
The 48-year-old Scottish singer - who, despite being a favorite to win, only finished second to dance group Diversity in the show's finals on Saturday - was said to be victimized by the clips posted by some users of the online sharing website.
The clips contained voting line numbers that were incorrect. Instead of showing her vote phone number finishing with 08, the clips posted either 07 or 09. Diversity, who beat Boyle with only 4.7 percent, were assigned the voting line number of 07, while third placer Julian Smith was assigned 09.
However, the claims that SuBo might have won the contest if not for the false numbers on YouTube clips have been denied by YouTube and TV network ITV.

In a shocking twist, Susan Boyle, whose videos on YouTube had received million of hits, lost to a dance troupe named Diversity on "Britain's Got Talent" after the Saturday, May 30 final. The voting ballot put Susan in the runner-up position, ahead of saxophonist Julian Smith who finished third.
Despite the news circulating that Susan almost quit the show due to the amount of pressure put on her, she delivered a reprise of "I Dreamed a Dream". Judge Piers Morgan, in particular, was very vocal about his support of her, saying "I'm not supposed to favor anyone, I should be impartial, but you know what, forget it. That was the greatest performance I've seen in Britain's Got Talent history. You should win this competition. I loved it!"
Amanda Holden praised her for standing up for Scotland while Simon Cowell said, "Win or lose, you had the guts to come back here tonight,...
