Calling the success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” a testament to video-game IP would be a disservice to Illumination and Nintendo. Universal confirmed that it grossed $454 million worldwide in its first week and the Mario movie achieved something that even HBO’s “The Last of Us” did not: It’s a four-quadrant success.
A ton of kids turned out, sure, and it didn’t hurt that the last family movie in theaters was months ago with “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” However, as IndieWire reported last weekend, 84 percent of the film’s audience was above the age of 13. It’s a rare movie that attracts both kid-friendly crowds and nostalgic adults, that played for all genders and ethnicities, and performed strongly across international markets, and that made it the biggest worldwide animated opening of all time.
Success like that inevitably sets off a frenzy of aspiring copycats, but...

Jonathan Krisel, I choose you! A sequel to 2019’s live-action film “Pokémon: Detective Pikachu” is in the works at Legendary Entertainment, and the studio is in talks with the “Portlandia” co-creator Krisel to direct, IndieWire has confirmed.
Chris Galletta (“The Kings of Summer”) wrote the script based on the original film directed by Rob Letterman. However, a source tells IndieWire that no other talent deals have closed yet, including for Ryan Reynolds, who voiced the beloved yellow, electric mouse Pokemon in the original film. “Detective Pikachu” also starred Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Bill Nighy, Ken Watanabe, Suki Waterhouse, and Rita Ora. Though Deadline, which first reported the news, says Reynolds is still expected to play a part in the sequel.
Though the original film, which was released by Warner Bros., grossed $449 million worldwide, development on a sequel had stalled, with the film’s star Smith at one point even suspecting a follow-up would never happen.

Nearly four years removed from the original, a "Detective Pikachu" sequel is finally moving forward at Warner Bros. Though it does seem like we're going to get a mostly new team behind the camera. As for in front of the camera? More on that in a moment. For now, what we know is that Jonathan Krisel, the co-creator of "Portlandia," is in negotiations to direct the sequel. This news comes courtesy of Deadline, who reveal that Chris Galletta ("The Kings of Summer") is also on board to pen the screenplay. So things seem to be moving along.
Rob Letterman ("Goosebumps") directed the first film, which finally brought the world of "Pokemon" into live-action. Rather than go with an Ash Ketchum-centric story, Warner Bros. opted to adapt the "Detective Pikachu" video game in a bit of a left-of-center move. It's also one that worked, as the film earned generally favorable reviews...

Apple recruited Nick Mohammed — one of the stars of “Ted Lasso,” Apple TV+’s biggest show — for a short film extolling the built-in privacy features of the iPhone.

Jonathan Krisel was executive producer of “Baskets,” starring Louie Anderson, which aired on FX from 2016-19. Anderson, who died at age 68 on Jan. 21, won an Emmy for his performance as Christine on the show, which also starred Zach Galifianakis.
Louie bought the entire crew Arby’s one night. He had already filmed his scenes for the day, but he wanted to spoil us. He even brought the manager from the Arby’s to help pass out all the food. He was just like that.
He knew everyone on the crew so well. When we’d be setting up a shot and the cinematographer and I would be discussing if we wanted the shot “dirty” — meaning in a close-up you see a piece of the off-camera actor — if Louie heard that, he’d immediately start singing “Ridin’ Dirty” by Nelly. It was like clockwork, and it was always extremely loud and somehow always funny.

In terms of television trends, 2020 has ended up being something of an unexpected year full of new series about space travel, and Showtime’s “Moonbase 8” (premiering Nov. 8) is the latest entry into the canon of that very specific brand of 2020 series.
Produced by A24, “Moonbase 8” isn’t the first space-themed comedy of the year, as series like Armando Iannucci’s “Avenue 5” on HBO—meaning “Moonbase 8” isn’t even the first one with a number in the title—and Greg Daniels’ Space Force on Netflix—which went the workplace comedy route that “Moonbase 8” also has—have also taken off this year with varying levels of flight (and critical success). On the dramatic front, there’s also been Netflix’s “Away” (premiered in September and canceled a month later) and Disney+’s adaptation of “The Right Stuff.” However, by not focusing on the majestic nature of space...

Moonbase 8 might, by virtue of its title, evoke imagery from unintentionally-funny early-post-Star Wars cash-in sci-fi from a bell-bottoms-brandishing yesteryear such as space base farce Saturn 3, but the comedy is assuredly intentional in the case of the Showtime series, which has just released its full trailer and a November release date.
Intriguingly, Moonbase 8 is a six-episode half-hour astronaut comedy series that’s not even set in space, instead set in the final frontier of the Arizona desert, following the training exploits of bumbling NASA wannabees played by an auspicious comedy collective in John C. Reilly, Fred Armisen and Tim Heidecker. The onscreen comedic triumvirate also serve as co-creators along with Jonathan Krisel, who co-created and wrote for Armisen’s Sundance Channel TV vehicle, Portlandia and did the same for FX Zach Galifianakis comedy Baskets.
On that note, check out the full trailer for Showtime’s Moonbase 8 just below.

The series is created, written and executive produced by Armisen, Heidecker, Reilly and Emmy nominee Jonathan Krisel (Baskets), who also serves as series director.
Set in the isolated desert of Winslow, Arizona at NASA's Moon Base Simulator, Moonbase 8 follows eager astronauts Skip (Armisen), Rook (Heidecker) and their leader Cap (Reilly) as they attempt to qualify for their first lunar mission.
While working vigorously to complete their training, a series of unexpected circumstances forces the astronauts to question their own mental sanity, trust in each other and whether or not they're cut out for space travel.

John C. Reilly, Tim Heidecker and Fred Armisen all want to go to the moon for their own reasons. The only problem: NASA probably will never let them.
The three star as a trio of terrible astronauts (they can’t even execute a proper countdown) in Showtime’s new comedy, “Moonbase 8,” which now has a full-length trailer.
Watch that preview via the video above. The series will debut on Showtime on Nov. 8.

As their trio of eager NASA astronauts attempts to qualify for a lunar mission, a series of unexpected circumstances forces the men to question their own sanity, trust in each other and whether or not they’re cut out for space travel.

Showtime dropped the first teaser for “Moonbase 8” — its new astronaut comedy starring Fred Armisen, Tim Heidecker and John C. Reilly — on Saturday, the 58th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s “We Choose to Go to the Moon” speech.
And based on the first look at this series, we don’t think JFK would choose these three to set out on “the most hazardous and greatest adventure in which man has ever embarked.”
In the 1-minute, 4-second video, which you can view above, Armisen, Heidecker and Reilly’s characters wait patiently at a space simulator on Earth, trying to prove themselves worthy of going to the moon. Despite the fact this trio definitely doesn’t seem up for the job — at least not in this handful of clips — their apparent obsession with the mission might get them there. Eventually. Some day. Maybe.

Another space-centered comedy is coming soon to your television. Check out the first teaser for the show below. The footage release is tied to the anniversary of JFK’s legendary “We Choose to Go to the Moon” speech, which plays over the teaser.
