New in theaters is “One Life” starring legendary actor Anthony Hopkins as real-life British humanitarian Sir Nicholas Winton. Just three years ago he led French playwright Florian Zeller‘s feature directorial debut “The Father.” It not only managed to win him a second Oscar for Best Actor following “The Silence of the Lambs” back in 1991, but it also made headlines. One reason was how it was unconventionally the final award presented during the telecast that year because the sentimental favorite, Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), was widely expected to win posthumously. Hopkins pulled off a huge upset, though, and he wasn’t even there to accept it. How did that win happen? Here are five reasons.

With great power comes great responsibility. Canal+ Group has received the conditional approval from the anti-trust board to acquire Orange Studio and Ocs, the film and pay TV operations of Orange, France’s leading telco group.
Canal+ has committed to a number of remedies for an initial duration of five years in order to get the regulatory green light and address concentration concerns.
The acquisition of Ocs by Canal+ could have large ramifications on the local film industry because both players represent the top two sources of pre-financing for French movies. Canal+ is currently on a three-year deal (until the end of 2024) with film guilds to invest an average of €200 million per year in French and European cinema. Ocs, meanwhile, has a deal with producers to invest €20 million annual investment in local pics.

Florian Zeller‘s melodrama The Son had its world premiere in September 2022 at the 79th Venice International Film Festival. Until its wide release in the first quarter of 2023 (following a limited theatrical release in late 2022), The Son had mostly flown under the radar. Part of the reason it bombed at the Box Office could be as a result of poor marketing. Its Hugh Jackman-led cast and its explored themes could have been a great marketing attraction if better attention had been given to it. In the end, Despite its below-average critical ratings and failing in many areas where...

Christopher Hampton, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “The Father” and “Dangerous Liaisons,” is set to adapt Walter Isaacson’s acclaimed biography “Leonardo Da Vinci” for Universal Pictures.
Universal Pictures had fiercely chased rights to the hot literary property six years ago, and was outbid by Paramount, which developed the project with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way. Now that Universal has finally secured those rights, it has tapped Hampton to pen the adaptation, which seems to be the perfect material for the Oscar winning writer whose movies typically lure A-list talent.
Hampton’s screenplays include “Atonement,” “Dangerous Liaisons,” “A Dangerous Method” and more recently Florian Zeller’s “The Father,” which won two Oscars, for best adapted screenplay and actor (for Anthony Hopkins). Hampton has also been celebrated for his plays and musicals that have garnered two Tony Awards, an Olivier Award, and the New York Theatre Critics Circle Award.

Bigger and longer are not always better. Case in point: Freud’s Last Session, the lavish film based on a modest off-Broadway play that captivated theater audiences a decade ago. Playwright Mark St. Germain worked with director Matthew Brown (The Man Who Knew Infinity) to reshape his two-character drama about an imaginary conversation between Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis as they debate the existence of God. That provocative exchange is still in the movie, and it sometimes crackles, thanks to the performances of Matthew Goode as Lewis and, especially, Anthony Hopkins as Freud. But the heart of the story is constantly undermined by a surfeit of asides about Lewis’ experiences in the First World War, Freud’s highly charged relationship with his daughter Anna, and several other subplots.

Oscar winner Olivia Colman is set to star as a fisherwoman and Dev Patel as her inanimate made-to-order husband in the twisted romance pic Wicker.
Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson will direct the indie from a script they adapted based on a short story, The Wicker Husband, by Ursula Wills-Jones. Topic Studios and Tango will finance and produce Wicker, with the cameras set to start rolling next year.
Colman will play a smelly and ridiculed fisherwoman in a seaside village where, fed up with small-minded neighbors, she commissions herself a husband to be made from wicker, who is played by Patel. In an otherwise conservative town, their unconventional romance sparks outrage, jealousy and chaos, the producers say in their film synopsis.
Black Bear will open international sales for Wicker in the American Film Market, while CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group will handle sales on the U.

Fred Kogel, CEO of leading German film and TV group Leonine Studios, which distributes the “Expendables” and “John Wick” movies in Germany, made the case for a new generation of action stars during the Zurich Summit over the weekend, where he was presented with Zurich Film Festival’s Game Changer Award.
He noted that many of today’s action stars are the same ones he watched on the big screen back in the 1980s, among them Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford and Tom Cruise.
Action movie fans identified with these actors because they could believe they were doing their own stunts, he added. There was “a great deal of identification with the type of the actor, with the physicality of the actor, so you could relate to that.”
By contrast, in modern CGI-laden superhero movies, “the younger generation doesn’t even know who does what.”

Greenbird founders, Jamie Munro and Stuart Mullin, will join the Stv Studios board in the roles of chief commercial officer and finance and integration director respectively, working alongside COO, Paul Sheehan, and under the leadership of MD, David Mortimer.
The deal boosts the number of labels within Stv Studios from nine to 24. As a result of the acquisition, Stv Studios now has expanded bases in Glasgow and London, as well as offices in Cardiff, Belfast, Brighton and Manchester.
Hit shows made by the producers in Greenbird’s cluster include: “Lego Masters” (Tuesday’s Child for Channel 4/Fox) and “The Hit List” (Tuesday’s Child for BBC One...

Netflix has released its weekly chart of how movies and television series have been doing on the streamer, with the Jennifer Lopez action-thriller remaining in #1 over the Top 10 English film chart for the week of May 22, its third week in that position. Read on for this week’s analysis.
Before we get to the movies, it’s quite notable that Arnold Schwarzenegger made his debut on the streamer in a rare live action series called “Fubar,” created by Nick Santora (“Scorpion”), which debuted atop the English TV list with 88.9 million hours viewed, easily the most-viewed series of the week. It entered the Top 10 in 90 countries and was the #1 watched series in the United States, Canada and dozens of other countries across the globe.
It still received some stiff competition from the “All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” spin-off series, “Xo, Kitty,” its first season getting 63.8 million hours viewed last...

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) has grossed triple what “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) has in theaters. But for home viewers, the latest Keunu Reeves action sequel booted the Nintendo game animated film out of all #1 VOD rankings after only one week.
Impressively, this was not only on iTunes and Google Play (which rank by number of transactions) but also Vudu, which tallies by revenue. “Wick” costs the standard $19.99 to view, while “Smb” is $24.99 ($29.99 to own). That suggests at that site at least it had a clear lead for the week. Meantime, “Smb” is a unanimous #2.
At Netflix, the success of recent Sony titles continues to be seen among their most viewed movies. The studio, lacking its own streaming site, now regularly sends its films there a few months after release. “Missing” continues at #1, but the surprise this week has been the success of “The Son.”

Gurinder Chadha's coming-of-age comedy hits all the right notes - and not just in terms of its Bruce Springsteen soundtrack. It's 1987 and Javed has high hopes of being a writer. When a friend (Aaron Phagura) turns him on to The Boss, Javed becomes his No.1 fan and.uses the music for inspiration. Underpinned by the engaging memoir by Sarfraz Manzoor, from which it is adapted, this is a pacy consideration of teenage life of the period that tackles more serious considerations of the racism and prejudice of the period lightly but effectively.

Exclusive: Mediawan Rights Managing Director Valérie Vleeschhouwer says the French company’s €100M ($107M) co-development agreement with Entourage Ventures allows the Zorro seller to “seize opportunities” and significantly expand its slate.
In an interview with Deadline prior to Series Mania, Vleeschhouwer said the deal “is the way to give us the tools to serve our strategy and serve talent.”
“We can be reactive and responsive when we have a crush on a project and we believe in it,” she added.
Mediawan’s international arm struck the agreement six weeks ago and will see the pair co-develop, co-produce and co-distribute shows. It covers scripted, documentary and animation and already includes Mediawan shows Zorro and Civilizations.
Before Mediawan, Entourage invested more than €50M ($54M) on 40 French films, and first pushed into TV series in 2020 through an agreement with producer Media Muskateers. “Entourage has great expertise in the sector, so it made sense to work together,...

A long awards season ended with a long but satisfying Academy Awards show. Along the way, stars were born, careers were revived and legends fell by the wayside to make room for upstarts.
The season, of course, was dominated by “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which slowly turned from a potential nominee to a dominant frontrunner, and then to a record-setting winner with more above-the-line Oscars than any film in history.
So of necessity, this timeline of 10 moments that defined the season will include “Everything” almost everywhere.

Oscars Analysis: How ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ Became the Poster Child for the New Academy
Slowly but surely, over the course of three and a half hours, the 95th Academy Awards ceremony turned from a runaway into a nail-biter.
And then it became a runaway again, with the pre-show favorite “Everything Everywhere All at Once” winning four of the last five categories, including Best Director, Best Actress and Best Picture. This came after the German-language drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” had put up a fight through the middle of the show, winning four awards and beating “Everything Everywhere” head-to-head in musical score to keep alive visions of a dramatic upset.
But if “Everything Everywhere” didn’t exactly win everything, everywhere, it won a lot and it won in the right places. Just after the three-hour mark, it tied “All Quiet” with its fourth win in the crucial film editing category, and then pulled ahead for good when Best Director went to directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.

Oscar and BAFTA-winning film producer David Parfitt is hoping to reunite with French producer Philippe Carcassonne following their successful collaboration on Florian Zeller’s Oscar-winning drama The Father.
Parfitt revealed his plans during a masterclass at the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra talent incubator event on Sunday.
“He [Carcassonne] is developing something really interesting based on an Israeli novel called Pain, which he commissioned as a French screenplay but they have decided they want to do it in England in English,” Parfitt clarified after the talk.
The 2019 novel by Zeruya Shalev revolves around a woman revisiting the double trauma of being caught up in a terror attack and abandonment by a lover when he comes back into her life a decade later.
Carcassonne’s partner, the actress and director Anne Fontaine, whose credits include Coco Before Chanel, is attached to direct the film, in what would be her first English-language production.

Adam Driver’s adventure sci-fi film 65 has joined a spate of upcoming Hollywood films in securing release dates in China. The film, which opens in North America on Friday, will unfurl three weeks later in the massive China theatrical market on March 31.
The release of U.S. movies in China slowed to a trickle last year amid the country’s harsh Covid Zero pandemic control policies and an uptick in nationalist sentiment surrounding high-profile Chinese Communist Party political events. But the regulatory tide began to turn late in 2022, starting with the release of James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water in December (it went on to earn $250 million locally). Since then, although Washington-Beijing diplomatic relations are at a nadir, the flow of U.S. movie product into China has begun to resume a level of pre-pandemic normalcy. Dementia seems to be the name of the game in cinema over the course of recent years. After Richard Glatzer’s and Wash Westmoreland’s effort “Still Alice” (2014) that took Julianne Moore to her first and so far only Oscar for playing the titular character, an academic who has to deal with the illness that will rapidly take her greatest asset, and even more impressive Florian Zeller’s stage play adaptation “The Father” (2020) that brought Anthony Hopkins his second Academy Award for the role, the Japanese novelist and producer Genki Kawamura took his own novel on the same topic as a source for his feature-length directorial debut. This week's episode of the Empire Podcast is bursting at the seams with Quantumania, as Chris Hewitt sits down with Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania stars, Jonathan Majors (aka Kang The Conqueror) and Paul Rudd (aka Lang The Possibly Conquered). One of the interviews is thoughtful and considered and introspective, the other is pure chaos. Have fun finding out which is which! Then Ben Travis Zooms with Jenny Slate, star and co-writer of the delightful Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, and finds out about how the character came about, and Slate's karaoke game. Very important.
And in the podbooth, Chris and Ben are joined by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer for an episode that delves deep into the cinematic treasures of 1998, discusses the week's movie news including all those lovely Super Bowl trailers, and reviews Quantumania, Marcel, and Florian Zeller's The Son. Oh, and time moves in mysterious ways this week.

Starring Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern and Anthony Hopkins, the film focuses on a couple whose teenaged son (played by Zen McGrath) starts experiencing suicidal thoughts.
Directed by Florian Zeller, the filmmaker known for his Oscar-winning 2021 drama The Father, The Son has been received poorly by critics.
In a one-star review for The Independent, Clarisse Loughrey wrote: “There are no ill intentions behind The Son, but sometimes stories are so badly judged and naive in their execution that they turn ugly. That becomes especially clear when Zeller’s film reaches its conclusion, one telegraphed so early and with such gracelessness that it’s borderline parodic.”
Speaking to the Radio Times, Zeller addressed criticisms of the film, and outlined some of the research that had gone into making it.
“It was coming from a personal place,...

As China’s post-pandemic reopening gathers steam, film executives in Beijing are feeling cautiously optimistic for the first time in years. Local audiences have cast off their masks and returned to the multiplex, regulators are signaling a relaxing of control, and film professionals are finally traveling freely again to re-engage with international festivals and markets.
Beijing industry players warn, however, that the current recovery is likely to benefit China’s big commercial tentpoles and Hollywood studio movies first — and that any rebound for the country’s nascent indie import business could take time.
On the international front, China’s re-engagement with the global film community at large is readily apparent at the year’s first major film festival, the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival, where six Chinese features will premiere — including two in competition (Liu Jian’s animated film Art College 1984 and Zhang Lu’s drama The Shadowless Tower) — along...

The Son is an ugly, blaring question mark of a film, and inexplicably terrible considering the talent involved. Decades of research and armies of scientists might need to be deployed to figure out what happened here. It’s adapted from the second entry in a “spiritual trilogy” of plays by author and playwright Florian Zeller, alongside The Father and The Mother, each dealing with families assailed by disorders and illnesses. Two years ago, Zeller adapted The Father into a film – it proved to be a delicate and deceptively simple portrait of dementia that featured some of Anthony Hopkins’s finest work as an actor, and won him an Oscar. History will not repeat itself with this one.

Sony Pictures Classics has made many wise investments at the Sundance Film Festival over the years. Its 2022 acquisition, “Living,” just nabbed Oscar nominations for Best Actor, Bill Nighy, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Other recent Sundance titles propelled to the Oscars by the studio include “The Father” (2020), “Call Me By Your Name” (2017), “Whiplash” (2014) and “An Education” (2009). Amy Adams’ very first career bid came for “Junebug,” which the distributor picked up from Park City in 2005. That film’s writer, Angus MacLachlan, is the director of “A Little Prayer,” one of Sony Pictures Classics’ 2023 festival purchases (the other being Audience Award winner “The Persian Version”).
Starring David Strathairn as Bill Brass, the movie is about a soft-spoken North Carolina family man who, per official synopsis, “tests the limits of patriarchal interference” after discovering that his son, David (Will Pullen), has been having an extramarital affair. In breach of Southern hospitality, which prescribes minding one’s own affairs,...

The Sonis a drama movie written and directed by Florian Zeller, based on his own play.. Starring Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern.
Excellent acting in an “actor’s film”.
Storyline
A successful attorney, with a new wife and a baby, accepts taking care of his adolescent son from a previous marriage after his ex wife tells him she is worried about the boy´s random behavior.
Movie Review El Hijo (2022)
Excellent, well directed, good screenplay… one really had to have a bad day, a truly bad day to want to face two hours of skin deep feelings with the emotional problems of a son, worried parents and a drama that is great for actors to act in, but you will be wanting to be (truly) wanting to watch this.
Around here we usually say that we judge a movie, not the subject and we try to focus on the artistic virtues of the art,...

We must learn to speak openly about depression and despair. About the entire searing spectrum of pain they proffer, from feeling nothing to feeling everything and the myriad dark places in between.
On its surface, Florian Zeller’s The Son is an attempt to do just that. Disappointingly Zeller struggles to look directly at the darkness and what remains is a film that peers out at pain from between splayed fingers and keeps getting distracted by the more artful suffering of its biggest star.
Peter (Hugh Jackman) is a big city attorney with a career in its ascendency, a beautiful young wife and a healthy baby boy. There is more than a hint of self-satisfaction in his smile as he pours his evening glass of wine and surveys the kingdom of his kitchen. Kate (Laura Dern) is Peter’s first wife, who he left to pick up the pieces of the family he shattered.
