In the summer of 1996, the World Wrestling Federation held its annual King of the Ring tournament. After weeks of matches, the semis and finals were set for June 23rd, 1996, with Stone Cold Steve Austin facing Jake “The Snake” Roberts for the crown later in the night. Roberts, then known for working from a Christian angle, would cut a promo before the match doing just that. Just before Austin took the ring and pinned Roberts, he was tipped about the promo’s contents.
After the five-minute match, Austin stood next to the same man who tipped him off, Michael Hayes. And it was there that a legend and a catchphrase were born, and an entire industry was born again. With a mouth full of blood, Stone Cold Steve Austin told his defeated opponent: “You sit there and you thump your Bible, and you say your prayers, and it didn’t get you anywhere!

Despite no longer being a part of Yellowstone’s next season, Kevin Costner seems to be busier than ever. First up, he’s got a two-part Western epic called Horizon: An American Saga that’s coming out this summer, and now, Deadline is reporting that the actor’s got another “longtime passion project” ready to roll. While there are no specifics on what it may be, Costner is set to produce and star in the untitled film, with the director of his 2016 thriller Criminal, Ariel Vromen, at the helm.
In the article, no specifics are given, although Costner has been open about certain long-planned projects in the past. One is his book, The Explorer’s Guild, which he wrote with his Horizon collaborator Jon Baird and was called an Indiana Jones-style globetrotting adventure. It could be anything, although given Vromen’s track record, which includes based-on-fact thrillers, The Iceman (with...

I’ve loved gangster movies since I was four years old and saw Humphrey Bogart and Sylvia Sidney in Dead End (1937) on TV, and Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde (1967) at the movies (My dad pinched a lobby card for me). Every Friday night, a local NYC station ran old crime flicks on a slot called “Tough Guys.” Bogart, James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, and George Raft were the faces over the title. Today that might be Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Wesley Snipes, and James Gandolfini.
The gangster and crime genre produced some of the most influential films in cinema history. Mervyn LeRoy’s Little Caesar (1931), William A. Wellman’s The Public Enemy (1931), and Howard Hawks’ Scarface (1932), get a lot of credit for breaking ground in topics beyond criminality, shattering sexual taboos as well as the boundaries of acceptable visual violence. High Sierra (1941) and White Heat...

Few actors have been as versatile in movie roles as Michael Shannon over the past fifteen years. From being General Zod in DC Comics blockbusters to hitman Richard Kuklinski in “The Iceman,” to memorable supporting roles in “Bug,” “The Shape Of Water,” and “Knives Out,” Shannon has incredible range. We examine Frank Sheeran’s claim of whacking Jimmy Hoffa, the basis of The Irishman, and every other "confession" to the deed.
This article contains small The Irishman spoilers.
Do you remember where you were on the night Hoffa disappeared? Not if I can plead the Fifth.
The Irishman, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro as Frank Sheeran and Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa, hit theaters on Nov. 1 and Netflix over Thanksgiving. The film is bookmarked by a drive from Kingston, Pennsylvania to Detroit to attend a wedding on Friday, Aug. 1, 1975. Sheeran, crime boss Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci), and their wives were scheduled to arrive in Detroit on Tuesday, July 29, the day before Hoffa disappeared "to Australia—down under," as they say in the film.
Fourteen people claimed to have done the job on Hoffa. No one was ever convicted or even charged. Most...

Michael Shannon is one hell of an actor. However, even he can’t save the bad writing of The Iceman.
Here’s the deal. What they are trying to accomplish is to make “The Iceman” or Richard Kuklinski a compelling character that you feel compassion for. The story is based on Kuklinski, so he is the main focus. The murders, unfortunately, fall a bit flat. Despite focusing on his hundreds of kills, they shine more of the limelight on his love for his family. I feel that some might be disappointed with the lack of focus on the murders, but the film itself concentrates more on the man. The script feels a bit weak still. All of the compassion felt for Kuklinski comes from Michael Shannon. He is a fantastic actor who offers a complete dimension of layers. Still, the writing doesn’t begin to do justice to what they...

Ioncinema.com's Watch What they Write is a unique monthly feature where we interview the writer – or more specifically, the voice behind the original source material. The novelist often creates a world that borrows from the cinematic and vice-versa - it’s not a coincidence that a heavy amount of projects that make it onto the silver screen are based on/adapted from literature. With this feature we hope to bridge the distance between author and his/her original material with what may one day make itself onto the screen. This month we feature: Anthony Bruno and his 1993 nonfiction book, The Iceman. Richard Kuklinski, son of a brutal, alcoholic father who came home only infrequently and a mother who vented her resentment on her children, grew up to be an efficient mass murderer. Having killed in upwards of a hundred people, in various ways which made him untouchable by the police force.

Former mob hitman, Richard “The Ice Man” Kuklinski is going to be a name everybody knows by the end of next year. With not one, but Two biopics set for big screen release between now and then, it’s likely the first time such limelight has been shed on one mobster all at once.
We announced last year that Mickey Rourke, hot off the heels of playing Whiplash in Iron Man 2, had been cast as the mob’s favourite assassin in “Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer“. Shortly after however, not to be outdone, a rival project entitled The Iceman signed three big name actors, Michael Shannon, Benicio Del Toro and James Franco to their project.
