I must open with the disclaimer that I hadn’t seen the first two seasons of this Canadian cop/buddy comedy, “Pretty Hard Cases: Season 3” though I did watch several episodes to have some sense of ongoing character and plot backgrounds in these 10 hour-long episodes. I got much of it but would have understood everyone and everything better had I seen more from before. I recommend starting from the beginning for that reason. This show is right in the wheelhouse of those who enjoyed series like “Frankie Drake” or “Miss Fischer’s Murder Mysteries.” This one emphasizes the comic side even more than those others.
Meredith MacNeill and Adrienne C. Moore star as Toronto police detectives who follow genre tradition by hating each other at first, before bonding over time as partners and then becoming besties.

You didn’t really think Toronto detectives (and BFFs) Samantha Wazowski (Meredith MacNeill) and Kelly Duff (Adrienne C. Moore) would stay apart for long, did you? When the comedic procedural Pretty Hard Cases returns with its final 10 episodes of Season 3, eight months have passed since their partnership was dissolved, and they’re missing each other big-time. “Sam and Kelly had come to rely heavily on each other both at work and as best friends,” says executive producer Sherry White, noting that much has changed since they split up. (Credit: Freevee) A disgruntled Sam has been demoted to beat cop, “which has been a big blow to her self-esteem,” says executive producer Tassie Cameron. She’s also living with and dating her ex-husband Steve (Trevor Hayes). “They’re trying to figure out how to navigate their relationship as former spouses and current partners,” Cameron adds. Meanwhile, Kelly has been busy working an undercover case,...

Last April, Sphere Media took the Canadian Screen Awards by storm with 22 awards for its scripted content, including a record 12 wins for the historical Black drama “The Porter” and seven for queer comedy “Sort Of.” It was a big night for Canada’s third-largest independent producer, and in particular for Jennifer Kawaja, Sphere’s president of scripted and feature films for English Canada.
Previously, Kawaja spent decades heading up Sienna Films with her business partner, Julia Sereny, helming several award-winning projects like “Cardinal,” “Trickster” and “One Dead Indian.” The duo sold the company to Kew Media Group in 2017 and in 2020, Montreal-based Datsit Sphere snatched it up when Kew was placed into receivership. Last year, Sphere restructured and rebranded under a single banner with the intention of streamlining content creation, production and distribution.

Former Orange Is the New Black inmate Adrienne C. Moore operates on the other side of the law in this Canadian buddy-cop treat, Pretty Hard Cases. Gruff Toronto drug squad detective Kelly Duff (Moore) and her colleague in the gang unit, rule-following optimist Samantha Wazowski (Meredith MacNeill), “are the yin to the other’s yang,” says exec producer Sherry White. (Credit: Ian Watson/IMDb TV) In this lighthearted crime series streaming on Prime’s free IMDb TV channel, they blend differing work styles to bring down a common target: a violent drug-dealing street gang. “The stakes are high,” says executive producer Tassie Cameron, “but there’s always room for fun.” Initially antagonistic, the women rub off on each other. “Sam will help Kelly learn to be more vulnerable, and Kelly will help Sam become tougher,” says Cameron, adding that the women “are better together…most of ...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched the first season of “Pretty Hard Cases,” streaming now on IMDb TV.
For seven seasons, Adrienne C. Moore played an inmate nicknamed Black Cindy on Netflix’s dark comedy “Orange Is the New Black,” set in a women’s prison Litchfield Penitentiary. With her new Canadian television series, “Pretty Hard Cases,” Moore is now on the other side of the law as Kelly Duff, a no-nonsense drug squad detective. But, she has found some important similarities between the two shows that helped make her professional transition an easy one.
“What I learned from my time at ‘Orange’ was that yes, even though prison creates its own microcosm of a world, it’s still dealing with the same dynamics that we deal with on the larger scale of the bigger world — the politics, the theme of education, with love, with rivalries.

IMDb TV has acquired Canadian drama series Pretty Hard Cases, setting a U.S. premiere date of September 10 for its first season.
The action-packed series from Sherry White and Tassie Cameron examines the odd couple dynamic between two radically different female detectives in their early 40s. The first is optimistic, over-achieving guns and gangs detective, Samantha Wazowski (Meredith MacNeill). The second is Kelly Duff (Adrienne C. Moore), a tough, unapologetic type from the drug squad.
It’s not until Samantha and Kelly’s chance meeting during a takedown that they realize they’re going after the same target. While they couldn’t disagree more on strategy, and pretty much everything else, they are forced to put their differences aside in their quest to dismantle the Stockwoods, a Toronto street gang dealing drugs and wreaking havoc on the community.
As the season unfolds, we see that both women are grappling with loneliness,...

Originating on CBC Television in 2016, “Baroness Von Sketch Show” has seen us through the chaos of the last five years. The Canadian sketch comedy series is created by Carolyn Taylor, Meredith MacNeill, Aurora Browne and Jennifer Whalen, a dynamic foursome whose varying talents combine into comedic gold. A smash hit in their native Canada, the series earned a cult following in the U.S. when sketches began making the rounds on YouTube, earning fans in Reggie Watts and Lea Delaria, who shared early videos. IFC brought the series to American audiences in 2017, and will debut the fifth and final season (which premiered in Canada in the fall) on February 24.
“Baroness” always — and proudly — skews feminist, though the comedy is always queen. The humor is a deeply satisfying blend of broad slapstick with sharp satire. Many of the sketches combine a shrewd social criticism, whether of diet culture or parenting double standards,...

Since its premiere in 2016, “Baroness Von Sketch Show” has consistently delivered smart, unexpected, rip-roaring comedy on a range of topics rarely addressed by typical sketch shows. Whether it’s the absurdist escalation of Red Wine Ladies’ Night, or the anti-misogynist virtue signaling of a Queer Theory Reading Group, “Baroness Von Sketch Show” took advantage of under-explored scenarios to produce hilarity that resonated with the everywoman. In its excellent fifth season, the group continues to make good on that promise with no sign of slowing down. Produced by the CBC and airing on IFC in the U.S., “Baroness Von Sketch Show” not only proves Canadian humor translates just fine, but when it comes to sketch comedy, they reign supreme.

Orange Is The New Black’s Adrienne C. Moore and Baroness von Sketch Show’s Meredith MacNeill are to star in detective drama Lady Dicks for Canada’s CBC and NBCUniversal International Studios.
The pair will play two radically different female detectives in their early 40s in the ten-part series co-created by Rookie Blue exec producers Tassie Cameron and Sherry White.
The action-packed series follows Guns and Gangs detective, Samantha (MacNeill) and Narcotics detective, Kelly (Moore), who by day are true action heroes in their own particular way: skilled, tough, determined, and ruthless. But by night, they’re both grappling with loneliness, dysfunctional families, screwed-up love lives, and a sense that their professional ambitions may not be totally in line with their personal needs. Their friendship could help to balance each other out, if only they didn’t drive one another utterly insane.

Everyone’s favorite Canadian sketch show (that’s currently airing new episodes and led by four women), “Baroness Von Sketch Show,” is coming back to IFC for its fourth season. And based on the official trailer, it’s still as poignant as ever, as it tackles things like: the horror and anger that comes with the realization that there are somehow full-blown adults who were born in the late 1990s, whether scrunchies are back in style and if they ever were “in style” to begin with, and the most important topic of all, binge-watching.
As IFC puts it: “‘Baroness von Sketch Show’ provides an insightful, satirical look at our everyday modern lives. Fast-paced and irreverent, the series celebrates the absurd and mines the embarrassing, offering a fresh, witty take on relatable moments such as crying at work, waiting in airport security lines, dealing with gossip-obsessed co-workers, co-parenting and more.”

“Baroness von Sketch Show” star Meredith MacNeill attended TheWrap’s Be Conference in Austin, Texas, on Monday and gave advice to millennials feeling pressure to succeed before they turn 30. “I too felt this odd pressure at 19 years old,” MacNeill said on the panel with her fellow costars and executive producers, Aurora Browne and Jennifer Whalen. “I’ve seen both sides in terms of finance, meaning not having much and people that have a lot … I think it’s what we’re told: Who we are is who we are and money has nothing to do with it. Normally it's a good thing when you get a star like Reggie Watts to serenade you with a song -- but maybe not this time!
On Wednesday's episode of Baroness von Sketch Show, the musical comedian makes a guest appearance in a very funny sketch centered around a woman's 44th birthday.
Three office pals -- played by Baroness' Meredith MacNeill, Aurora Browne and Carolyn Taylor -- hire Watts to make up a song for their co-worker Ashley's (Jennifer Whalen) big day, but the overly specific, meandering tune gets a little too spot-on for her liking. After all, loneliness and IVF aren't two topics you expect to hear in a celebratory song.
Watch the irreverent sketch below:
Exclusive: 'Baroness von Sketch Show' Co-Creator Carolyn Taylor Finds the Funny in Life's Absurdities

For too long, American sketch comedy has been so dominated by “Saturday Night Live” that any other attempts at the form have seemed futile. The trick to not competing directly with the NBC behemoth seems to be to addressing a niche audience that is sorely underserved by the mainstream, such as Comedy Central’s “Key and Peele,” IFC’s “Portlandia,” and now, the brilliant “Baroness Von Sketch Show,” also on IFC. The network bought the series from the CBC, and has been airing the first two seasons for American audiences who are hungry for something different.
Now in the middle of its IFC run, “Baroness Von Sketch Show” is written and performed by Aurora Browne, Meredith MacNeill, Carolyn Taylor, and Jennifer Whalen. Browne, Taylor, and Whalen met at Second City in Toronto, and MacNeill is a classically trained actor who came to comedy after studying at Rada. While the show has a decidedly woman-centric bent,...

Cult comedy Baroness von Sketch Show may already be on its second season in its native Canada, but U.S. audiences are getting the chance to catch up on all the laughs now that the show is airing on IFC.
With shows like Portlandia, The Birthday Boys and Comedy Bang! Bang!, the network has been a haven for quirky, creative sketch comedy, but Baroness is a welcome niche in the crowded field: four women over 40 skewering the absurdities of everyday life. Where many other sketch shows are wildly over-the-top or lean towards bonkers scenarios, actor-writers Carolyn Taylor, Aurora Browne, Jennifer Whalen and Meredith MacNeill take things far enough to be hilarious, but not so insane that scenes are unrelatable.
