Rev. Dr. A. Stephen Pieters, the AIDS activist and longtime HIV survivor known informally and widely as Steve Pieters following his groundbreaking 1985 interview by televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, died July 8 in Los Angeles after a two-week hospitalization with an infection. He was 70.
His death was announced by spokesperson Harlan Boll.
The historic Bakker-Pieters interview, one of the earliest sympathetic presentations of a gay man with AIDS made all the more remarkable by Bakker’s then-elevated status in the evangelical community, was depicted in the 2021 feature film The Eyes of Tammy Faye starring Jessica Chastain as Bakker and featuring Randy Havens of Stranger Things as Pieters.
In a statement, Chastain, who won an Oscar for her performance, said, “Steve Pieters was an inspiration and advocate for those living with HIV/AIDS for over 35 years. He was a constant reminder that God is Love. Rest in Peace sweet angel Steve. You made...

Rev. Stephen Pieters, the influential HIV/AIDS activist and survivor whose televised interview with Tammy Faye Bakker in 1985 transformed him into a national spokesperson in the battle against the disease, has died. He was 70.
Pieters died Saturday in Los Angeles after being hospitalized two weeks earlier with an infection, publicist Harlan Boll announced.
Pieters had been diagnosed with AIDS-related complex in 1982 and Kaposi sarcoma and Stage 4 lymphoma in 1984 when he appeared via satellite on the Bakker-hosted Tammy’s House Party, seen by millions of evangelical Christians throughout the southeastern U.S. on the Ptl Network.
“She wanted to be the first televangelist to interview a gay man with AIDS,” Pieters told People magazine two years ago. “It was a very scary time, and there was still a lot of fear about AIDS and about being around a person with AIDS. And I thought the opportunity to reach an audience that...

"Stranger Things" continues to impress as arguably one of the best shows ever produced on TV. The series, created by Matt and Ross Duffer, about a group of kids who stumble upon a young girl with extraordinary powers, perfectly blends horror, action, comedy, drama, and a hefty dose of heart, much of which is due to the remarkable cast of actors. Winona Ryder and David Harbour lead the way. Still, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, Joe Keery, and Gaten Matarazzo often steal the show.
Of course, perhaps the best of the bunch is Matarazzo as the lovable nerd Dustin, a character as wise as he is silly. Whether pouring through cafeterias to find chocolate pudding, cursing angry adults, or chasing scary monsters, Dustin never ceases to entertain. Instead, he's so much fun I compiled a list of the character's 12 best moments on the show.

Netflix debuted a “Stranger Things” Season 4 teaser in honor of “Stranger Things Day” — Nov. 6, the same day the sci-fi drama character Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) first went missing in Hawkins, Ind. in 1983. The new season will launch summer 2022.
In it, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Will are living new lives in California, where Eleven seems to be having a hard time adjusting, although she doesn’t admit that when writing to Mike (Finn Wolfhard). Her letter serves as narration for the teaser, which you can watch below.
“I even like school now. I have made lots of friends,” she says, as she’s ignored by peers in the school hallway. “Even so, I am ready for spring break, mostly because I get to see you. We will have the best spring break ever.”
The teaser ends in a montage of classic “Stranger Things” chaos: explosions, car chases, a creepy doll,...

After Douglas Sirk but before reality TV, there was bird-voiced televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, the bighearted, spotlight-seeking American success story laid low by her misplaced love for a crooked husband, blind trust in schemers, and old-fashioned greed. Had Jim Bakker not come along to hustle their young marriage into a cash cow of a ministry, one could see the cheery, hard-working, socially liberal Tammy Faye leading a perfectly flush life entertaining the adoring faithful, leaving only her cosmetic boldness as a source of tabloid derision. (Or was it a facial armor that could only arise from being married to Bakker?)
Yet scandal did come for Tammy Faye, after which queer art swooped to rescue her with the 2000 documentary “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” from Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato. A sympathetic case of gay adoption that teased as only family could, it also stressed where redemption and pity was warranted for so melodramatic a life.

Netflix’s “Fear Street” teaser stirred up buzz in May for two reasons: It revealed all three movies in the trilogy would roll out over three consecutive weeks in July, and it confirmed the movies would toughen up R.L. Stine’s PG-friendly books and make them R rated. Now comes the official trailer for the “Fear Street” trilogy, all installments of which are directed by Leigh Janiak.
Netflix’s official synopsis for the “Fear Street” trilogy reads: “In 1994, a group of teenagers discovers that the terrifying events that have haunted their town for generations may all be connected — and that they may be the next targets. Based on R.L. Stine’s best selling horror series, the trilogy follows the nightmare through Shadyside’s sinister history.”

Searchlight Pictures has released the trailer for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” starring Andrew Garfield and Jessica Chastain as infamous televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker.
The trailer gives viewers a sneak peek into the brightly-colored world of Jim and Tammy, but things begin to go south when financial improprieties, a sex scandal and rivals break up their marriage — and their empire. As the trailer progresses and the Bakkers grow older, Chastain and Garfield become nearly unrecognizable, showing off the hair and makeup department’s skills.
Directed by Michael Showalter and based on a true story, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” details the rise, fall and redemption of Jim and Tammy Faye during the 1970s and ’80s. The Bakkers went from humble beginnings to creating the world’s largest religious broadcasting network, as well as a Christian theme park. The couple soon soared to fame for their teachings about love and acceptance,...

Guitars and vocals were replaced with the sound of fans booing on Thursday as the Brothers Osborne’s halftime performance at the Chicago Bears-Detroit Lions game was delayed for several minutes by audio issues.
The first two attempts by the country music duo to start their performance were derailed by sound problems. Fox announcer Joe Buck, noting the boos from the eager fans, said: “The crowd [is] almost willing this to happen.”
Seconds into the country duo’s performance at Ford Field in Detroit, the sound cut out and the crowd let out an audible gasp. You can check out the mini-fiasco below:

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched Season 3 of “Stranger Things,” streaming now on Netflix.
Agents of the U.S. government have been a key part of the first two seasons of “Stranger Things,” but Season 3 of the Netflix series takes things in a very different direction.
Last chance to avoid spoilers.
From the opening moments of the season, fans learn that classic ’80s movie bad guys — the Russians — have been attempting to open their own gateway into the Upside Down with little luck. So they decide to attempt to reopen the gateway that was previously opened in Hawkins, covering up their efforts by building the Starcourt shopping mall over their underground base.
While most of the show’s younger stars are busy dealing with the return of the Mind Flayer, a new team of heroes assembles known as the Scoop Troop: Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Steve (Joe Keery...

When it comes to Stranger Things characters, I put Mr. Clarke in the same category as Officer Callahan, meaning the two men are highly underrated. Just as Callahan doesn't get nearly enough credit for his sassy one-liners, it seems like Scott Clarke's importance to the series' plot goes unfairly unnoticed.
A science teacher at Hawkins Middle School and the A/V Club adviser, Clarke nurtures the curiosity of his students, especially Mike Wheeler and his friends. He passionately lectures and patiently answers questions - even fielding inquiries in the wee hours from his home (like that time Dustin interrupts his date night to ask how to build a sensory deprivation tank for Eleven during season one). On top of that, Clarke's simple explanation of how alternative dimensions work was a crucial factor in helping Dustin discover that the gate to the Upside Down was in Hawkins Laboratory.

After that he just kind of pops in now and again and then fades back out. As a supportive character he seems to be right where he

The MonsterVerse, featuring Godzilla and King Kong, is in full swing, following 2014's release of Godzilla and this year's Kong: Skull Island. Not to be confused with Universal's universe featuring its own classic monsters, now called Dark Universe, the MonsterVerse's next chapter will be Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019. Following that sequel to 2014's Godzilla, Godzilla Vs. Kong is set to bring the two legendary monsters together in 2020.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the director attached to Godzilla Vs. Kong, and it's neither Godzilla's Gareth Edwards or Kong: Skull Island's Jordan Voght-Roberts. Adam Wingard, known for his work on horror films such as You're Next, The Guest, and 2016's remake of Blair Witch, has been tapped to direct the feature, from a script crafted by a writer's room including Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean), Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne (Star Trek Beyond), Lindsey Beer, Cat Vasko,...

When Netflix has a resident rock star scientist like Bill Nye on the payroll, you can bet the streaming service will put him to good use beyond just hosting his show, “Bill Nye Saves the World.”
In the video below, Nye takes on one of the scientific theories seen in Netflix’s breakout hit “Stranger Things.” On the show itself, teacher Mr. Clarke (Randall P. Havens) took a stab at explaining how to travel to an alternate dimension. His interpretation involved drawing on a paper plate and an elaborate metaphor involving an acrobat, a flea and a rope (no, they didn’t walk into a bar). The rather simplistic explanation, however, didn’t really say how said alternate dimension could exist, which is understandable. There’s no way that Mr. Clarke knew that the boys were dealing with the Upside Down.

In my last column I talked about my expectations for the Fan2Sea comic-con cruise, how it fulfilled them, and some of the things I generally loved about being at a con on a cruise ship and about the way in which Fan2Sea pulled off its maiden voyage (haha!).
Today, it’s all about the details. Want to know what your daily experience will be like if (when! I hope!) Fan2Sea happens again and you decide to go? Well, I can’t say, but I can tell you what mine was like! So here goes:
Day 1
Day 1 was pleasantly low-key from the start. Because luggage was still being delivered to staterooms, I spent the first bit of ship time chilling in one of the main areas overlooking the bar, with my lovely roommate, ComicMix assistant editor Adriane Nash, and with PR guru (and former Comic Book Resources writer/editor) Steve Sunu.
