Success treading the boards followed, with roles in popular shows like Rent, Jersey Boys, The Grapes of Wrath and as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. Dominic made the move into movies and TV playing...read more...

Gee, let’s enter the mind of serial killer! Cause, you know, that worked out so well for Jennifer Lopez in “The Cell”. Nir Paniry’s “Extracted”, which hits VOD and selected theaters tomorrow, is working with a tad smaller budget than the Lopez film, or Nolan’s “Inception”, which it also has more than a little resemblance to. Still, it looks pretty interesting if you’re in a mood for a little mind-screw and don’t mind the lack of big-budget Hollywood gloss. A scientist invents a technique to enter people’s memories deep within their subconscious when their mind is at its most vulnerable state. When he is tasked with entering a convicted criminal’s mind to see whether he committed murder, he is faced with his most dangerous and risky memory extraction ever. Starring Sasha Roiz, Jenny Mollen, and Dominic Bogart. Get extracted this July 26th, 2013.

This summer has seen cities demolished, landmarks destroyed and monsters rising out of the ocean, proving that Hollywood knows how to find massive backdrops for their blockbuster spectacles. But filmmakers of late have found an unlikelier location for thrills: the mind. Christopher Nolan dove deep with "Inception," Shane Carruth played in that territory with "Upstream Color" and even Pixar will delve into that area with 2015's "The Inside Out." Now, another film is also using the brain to spur some interesting narrative twists. Filmmaker Nir Paniry's "Extracted" stars Sasha Roiz, Jenny Mollen, Dominic Bogart and Richard Riehle and tells the story of a scientist who invents a technique to enter people's memories, and is tasked with entering a convicted criminal's mind to see whether he committed murder. Of course, he gets much more than he bargained for. In this exclusive clip, we see our characters preparing just as the...

Catch the first poster for the sci-fi thriller / horror Extracted directed by Nir Paniri. The film opens on via Phase 4 Films, and stars Jenny Mollen, Dominic Bogart and Richard Riehle. As far as the design of this poster goes, I think it's pretty well made and almost reminds of those spinal tubes on Keanu Reeves' back in The Matrix. In Extracted, a scientist invents a technique to enter people's memories deep within their subconscious when their mind is at its most vulnerable state. When he is tasked with entering a convicted criminal's mind to see whether he committed murder, he is faced with his most dangerous and risky memory extraction ever.

"I Am Not A Hipster" opens with indie rock darling Brooke Hyde (Dominic Bogart) bailing on the opening number of his show to puke up his one-too-many whiskey shots in the bathroom of the local venue, stranding his band onstage. Clearly this guy, while talented (from the little bit we get to hear of his song), is not just troubled, he's in a really bad place, a place beyond just the inner recesses of the local dive's porcelain. Despite it's too clever title, "I Am Not A Hipster" is more than just a lampooning of the hipster scene of Anywhere, USA, which in this case is San Diego. It's a deep dive into the effects of grief on the creative process, on the strength of family ties and how easily they can be lost, and what it can mean to be recognized for your work. These are all things that Brooke,...

Destin Cretton’s wonderful fictional feature debut, I Am Not A Hipster, just got released across multiple platforms, from several different VOD services to Blu-ray and DVD. With this exclusive clip you’ll find the film’s first two minutes, giving you a gorgeous musical performance and an introduction to the strident but afflicted lead, Brook (played by Dominic Bogart), who is lost in a world where art has lost its importance in the face of loss and loneliness. Pick up the disc (or even a t-shirt) from the filmmakers direct here.

Following up his award winning short, Short Term 12, writer/director Destin Daniel Cretton returned to Sundance the following year with another personal reflection, this time on the San Diego indie scene through the eyes of young musician desperately trying to cope with his mother’s passing. The title I Am Not A Hipster suggests a focus on image and perception, which in fleeting instances come to fruition, but the film is really a heartfelt meditation on loss, loneliness, and art’s curious ability to both help process the past or flatly provide phlegmatic entertainment. Cretton’s feature is a work of deep emotion that showcases a breakout performance by Dominic Bogart and a wonderful original soundtrack by Joel P. West that stands center stage.

Why Watch? Anders (Dominic Bogart) works an unfulfilling job making something the mainstream public will probably love (which makes him gag), but at night, he gets to labor away at his passion project. It’s almost everyone’s life story with one small difference: Anders makes robots. It’s really attention to detail (both the design and the story) that makes this all-too-common sci-fi trope sing with richer tones. Bogart gives a keen performance as a younger Doc Brown on Ocd medication. He displays an incredible power that’s locked away in a man who has no choice but to be subdued — from the way he lightly brushes his prototypes hair to how he sees red when an ounce of mustard is spilled by his lovely Lisa. Of course, while most good science fiction uses the extra breathing room of technology to explore a difficult human theme, the thing that’s kind of brilliant about Lisa is...

"A film that, even if you hate hipsters, you may fall in love with, just like me." Yep, that's what I'm quoted as saying (from this review) in this new and, likely, final trailer for Destin Cretton's I Am Not a Hipster, a film that premiered at Sundance last year as one of my favorites of the fest. Despite that title and what it sounds like, it's not a film about hipsters, it's an emotional, entertaining, heartfelt and easily lovable indie musical drama about a struggling family. Dominic Bogart stars as Brook, with Tammy Minoff, Lauren Coleman and Kandis Erickson as his three sisters, and Alvaro Orlando as his friend. I re-watched this recently and really enjoyed it again, such a great film, it's worth seeing when possible. Fantastic final trailer. Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel’s follow-up to their fascinating depiction of traveling sheep herders in Sweetgrass, is this year’s quintessential art doc. With a myriad of weather-proof digital cameras strapped to a North America trolling ship, the film documents the grotesque nature of the commercial fishing profession on a very physical level. We slosh about the deck bathed in the blood of countless sea creatures while we watch weathered men be pelted by an ever present downpour as hungry gulls flutter against a black sky hoping to score some remains. This is Deadliest Catch without the embellishments of competition, personality or theme music and it is a purely guttural experience to be had.

Short Term 12 the feature, is based on a short film (see trailer below) that picked up Jury Prize for Best Short film at Sundance in 2008. My Hail Mary pass pick of all of my predictions, as the drama has been officially in post production since October, I figure that filmmaker Destin Cretton already had a well established blue print making for a tight production with the only real surprises coming from what was being served at the craft services table. The script won the Nicholl Screenwriting Fellowship, and for those with a short term memory, Cretton’s premiered his feature debut at the fest last year – I’m Not A Hipster to a critically favorable response (our Jordan Smith says this is “a work of deep emotion that showcases a breakout performance by Dominic Bogart and a wonderful original soundtrack by Joel P. Extracted
Director & Screenwriter: Nir Paniry
A scientist is trapped in the memories of a criminal and must solve a crime in order to get back home to his family.
Cast: Sasha Roiz, Dominic Bogart, Jenny Mollen, Nick Jameson, Brad Culver
(World Premiere)
Film Synopsis (from SXSW.com)
Who’S It For?: Fans who are perfectly satisfied by science fiction television shows.
Overall
Extracted has a concept that is perfectly sexy for the lower standards of a cable TV series. With its simple story and lack of magnetic tension, it’s a reminder of the lower attention span asked for by most TV shows compared to any theatrical experience. Most TV shows (especially the ones that look like Extracted) feel like they’re meant to amuse viewers in-between commercial breaks. Viewers can move about their rooms while full episodes play out.

In which a review begs to open with a deep-seeming quote about memory – its price, its collapse, its malleability, its importance, something about Mark Twain – and fails utterly. Director and co-writer Nir Paniry attempts something similar with his Extracted. The film follows Sasha Roiz as Tom, an inventor who has crafted a machine that is able to plug into a person’s memory and allow them to experience it as if it was currently happening, all while processing those memories into video capture. Unsurprisingly enough, Tom’s invention doesn’t quite work as planned, and he’s plunged into the depths of another person’s memory – except the memories he’s found are bad ones, and he’s trapped inside of them. Though Tom creates his machine with the hope of helping people work through their past issues, when his apparent manager comes to him with an interested buyer who plans on using it for something very...

Thoughts by Tsr: Selling a high concept sci-fi film like this is hard enough. Selling one with no notable stars or filmmakers is a whole different level. Sometimes you end up with a masterpiece like Primer, but more often than not it ends up being forgettable. I’m not saying Extracted needs to be as good as Primer – very few things are – but if it lives up to this quality trailer, it might be a film (and filmmaker) to keep an eye on when it bows at SXSW next month.
I’m not familiar with any of the main cast other than Sasha Roiz, but they all seem to be doing solid work – a few rough moments from Dominic Bogart aside. It also looks to be a fairly well-made film,...

Brook (Dominic Bogart) is not a hipster – he may wear deep V-neck t-shirts, plaid and have an overwhelmingly self-deprecating attitude, but a hipster he is not (or so the title of this film claims.) Brook is an aspiring musician and while he is having a good amount of success on the San Diego indie music scene, he seems bitter and angry. Brook hates compliments and recognition, which is slightly ironic considering his best friend, Clarke (Alvaro Orlando), is his biggest fan (a fact he announces daily.) While doing a local radio interview Brook seems incredibly disinterested, almost laughing at himself for even being there, but this feeling quickly devolves into combative when the host (Brad William Henke) asks him about his mother (who passed away two years earlier.) Brook flips out and leaves the studio and it is in this moment that we begin to realize what may be the real root of Brook’s behavior. Brook...

Want an early look at one of my favorite films of Sundance and one of the most buzzed about flicks here? While this trailer has been out for a few months (via SlashFilm), we're just featuring it today as it's one film from this fest that I can't get out of my mind and one that I hope goes far after as well. One of the early films to play at this year's Sundance film festival was I Am Not a Hipster, the film by Destin Daniel Cretton in which Dominic Bogart plays a San Diego musician who has to deal with himself and his family during not entirely welcome visits from his father and sisters. The film has been praised for emotional honesty, the performance by Bogart and direction by Cretton, and the many songs which are woven into the narrative, and which have helped the film earn comparisons to Once. In early December we ran the teaser for I Am Not a Hipster, but now that the film is playing and enthusiastic reviews are coming in, it's worth taking a look once more. While the dialogue-free footage won't give you much indication of the characters or plot, you'll get a taste of the film's general aesthetic, and of the songs that run through it.

[1] In the low-key Sundance premiere I Am Not a Hipster, Dominic Bogart plays a San Diego indie rock singer/songwriter named Brook who is stuck in a depression. His three sisters and estranged father visit, forcing him to break his self-isolation and confront something he has spent two years running away from -- the death of his mother. I Am Not a Hipster is a musical, but not in the traditional sense. The film is likely to draw comparisons to the Sundance hit film Once as it features a lot of music in performance form. The film shows the personal journey from emotion to song, crafting a narrative from the soul. The music is beautiful yet raw and full of emotion. This movie is from writer/director Destin Daniel Cretton, whose short film Short Term 12 won the Jury Prize at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. When it comes to a film titled I Am Not a Hipster, it's hard to know what to expect. Is it about hipsters or not? Will it even be any good? In fact, it's about an incredible indie musician from San Diego named Brook and his family, and it's fantastic. While comparisons to former Sundance delight Once can certainly be made, this film is a unique, sometimes even quirky, low-budget indie made by director Destin Cretton's real friends and family (his sister was the costume designer). Not only was the music performed excellent, but it's actually beautiful story about a struggling family, filled with fascinating and often amusing characters. Actor/musician Dominic Bogart plays "faux-hipster" Brook, a talented indie musician in San Diego who moved there two years ago and "exploded" on the indie music scene with his debut album. Throughout the course of the film, we learn that...

One of my favorite things about directing movies is getting to highlight other people’s talents. When I was ten, I was videotaping my brother’s magic tricks and sister’s one-handed cartwheels to show-off to my parents. With this film, I got to do the same thing with a new group of friends.
Last year I saw Dominic Bogart on a Chicago stage in Jersey Boys and his singing blew my mind. I also knew he had a talent for subtle, character-driven performances, so I started to think of a role that would allow him to do both. A year later I asked him to be in this movie.
I Am Not A Hipster is a story that revolves around San Diego’s indie music and art scene, a community that I fell in love with while living there for 10 years. The movie contains seven song performances, and I am no musician,...

Here is a trailer for I Am Not a Hipster, which is premiering at Sundance this year. It was written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, and follows a group of characters in the indie art and music scene. The Canines have provided the indie soundtrack for the film, which stars Dominic Bogart, Alvaro Orlando, Brad William Henke, Tammy Minoff, Kandis Erickson, and Lauren Coleman.
I Am Not a Hipster is “a character-driven story exploring themes of love, loss and what it means to be creative in the face of tragedy.” The film is part of Sundance’s NEXTsection, which focuses on “pure, bold works by promising filmmakers distinguished by an innovative, forward-thinking approach to storytelling.”

This may not be geeky, but it looks pretty cool and definitely has a nice soundtrack. Visit the movies official site for more information and to stream the soundtrack.

[1] As a former resident of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, a.k.a. The Hipster Capital of the World, one joke I've heard (and, okay, repeated) a lot is that you can always tell a hipster by how vehemently he insists he's not a hipster. By that standard, the Sundance 2012 flick I Am Not a Hipster could just be the hipster film to end all hipster films. Whatever that means. Written and directed by first-time feature helmer Destin Daniel Cretton, I Am Not a Hipster follows characters in the indie art and music scene. Appropriately enough, given the material, the movie also features a melancholy indie rock soundtrack by the Canines, with several of their tracks from the movie already available for streaming or downloading. Watch the trailer and find out where to get the music after the jump.
