Lausanne, Aug 15 (Ians) World Athletics will introduce a centralised licensing system for Athletes’ Representatives from September 1 after the regulatory framework was approved by the World Athletics Council this week. The new system will set global minimum standards for becoming an Athletes’ Representative (Ar) and maintaining a licence to act on behalf of athletes for any competition.
The World Athletics Council also approved new Safeguarding Rules to guard against abuse, harassment or exploitation by World Athletics officials or which may occur at a World Athletics Series event or Congress. In exceptional cases, these rules will also apply to Mf officials.
Under the new system for Athletes’ Representatives (ARs), Member Federations (MFs) will not be permitted to regulate World Athletics ARs or charge any fees to them.

Prince William — and the world — was in for a huge surprise from Queen Elizabeth II in 2012. Now the Prince of Wales, William once admitted had a few choice swear words on the tip of his tongue when he saw his late grandmother in a James Bond video.
Queen Elizabeth made a cameo alongside Daniel Craig in a James Bond video for the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony
The opening ceremony at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, included a special introduction for the queen. She took her seat only after a short pre-recorded clip of her and Daniel Craig, as James Bond, played.
The six-minute video showed Craig, sporting a tuxedo as the iconic film character, going to Buckingham Palace. There he saw the queen — and her beloved corgis — before escorting her, via helicopter, to the Olympic stadium.
Their chopper flew over London, past landmarks and waving spectators before finally reaching the stadium.

Monaco, March 24 (Ians) The World Athletics Council has agreed to update the eligibility regulations for Transgender and Differences of Sexual Development (Dsd) athletes, making it difficult for them to participate in international events for females.

For Dsd athletes, the new regulations will require any relevant athletes to reduce their testosterone levels below 2.5 nmol/L for a minimum of 24 months to compete internationally in the female category in any event, not just the events that were restricted (400m to one mile) under the previous regulations.

Nairobi, Dec 1 (Ians) Kenya was on Wednesday spared an international ban from athletics, although the country will be “monitored closely” by World Athletics due to the spiralling cases.
At a news conference from Rome that was streamed live to the expectant east African distance running powerhouse, World Athletics President Sebastian Coe noted assurances from the country’s government to increase funding to fight doping had saved them from a ban.
“For Kenya, building trust in the athletics world due to the high number of athletes failing doping tests will be a long process,” Coe said in his remarks delivered after the World Athletics Council concluded their two-day meeting in the Italian capital, reports Xinhua.
The announcement comes as a reprieve for the country that has seen cases escalate to an all-time high annual spike, with almost 30 Kenyan athletes provisionally suspended or banned for anti-doping violations so far this year.

Former Olympic medalist Sebastian Coe, who was responsible for organising the 2012 Olympics in London, including the Queen’s unforgettable sketch with Daniel Craig, which opened the ceremony, said in an interview with BBC News that “a whole heap of people still believe she did jump from the helicopter,” reports ‘Variety’.
“It was an extraordinary moment because it was the only day throughout the seven-year period of [organising] the Games when I did genuinely feel the glow wobbling,” Coe recalled in his interview with Huw Edwards on Monday morning.
“[The maker of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’] Danny Boyle, who was our director, came in and said, ‘We’ve done some market research and it shows the Queen and James Bond in that order are the iconic global figures [for Britain].’ And I was buying it right up to that moment until he said, ‘Wouldn’t it be a great idea if we could get them to jump out of a helicopter together?...

Lausanne, Dec 23 (Ians) World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said that the organisation will go into the Tokyo Olympics with an anti-doping system that will be "better" than any other international federation (If). Coe said that the formation of the Athletics Integrity Unit (Aiu), an independent unit that was formed in 2017 by World Athletics to fight doping in the sport, has been integral in the reforms that the organisation undertook to fight the menace.
"I feel that I will be taking World Athletics as a federation to Tokyo with better systems in place than any other federation. I'm proud to be able to say that. And what I can say is if athletes do cheat there is a greater chance of them being caught in Tokyo than probably any previous Games," Coe was quoted as saying by The Guardian.

London, Dec 12 (Ians) World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said on Friday that he is hopeful that most athletics events will take place next season, including the delayed Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Sitting in the headquarters of World Athletics in Monaco, Coe made the remarks during an online interview, Xinhua news reports.
"I've become much more familiar with technology," said the 64-year-old former Olympic champion. "I feel a lot more competent using that. I appreciated that technology does allow us to be much more connected, in a funny way. I don't want it that connected always to be on the screen, but at the moment it's the best way we can focus."
Despite the Covid-19 pandemic still seriously affecting life in many regions of the world, Coe is looking forward to a comparatively normal season next year.

J.K. Rowling is now a royal Companion of Honor!
The Harry Potter author was granted the prestigious title by Prince William at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, saying she was "deeply honored and proud" to receive the honor, which is limited to 65 people "of distinction" at any one time.
"To be included in the distinguished and diversely talented company of the other Companions of Honor, especially as a female writer, is a particular privilege," added Rowling, who was honored for her services to literature and philanthropy.
The decoration comes nearly 20.5 years after the U.K. release of the first novel in her best-selling fantasy series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. In 2001, she also received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) from His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, for services to children's literature.

As fascist states go, President Snow's postapocalyptic Us is pretty phenomenal – if you overlook the games themselves
Three cheers for President Snow! Like zillions of people, I've seen The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, so I suppose I should be furiously opposed to the fascist state he governs. Donald Sutherland, who plays the president, even said he hoped the film would incite its young fans to revolution. But let's not be hasty. Running a country isn't easy and, to give credit where it's due, Snow is doing a tremendous job.
For one thing, his postapocalyptic Us, renamed Panem, has survived for 75 years – which is pretty phenomenal as fascist states go. For another, it boasts full employment. Each of its 12 outlying districts is devoted to a different industry, so nothing need be imported from the rest of the (presumably radioactive) world. How many countries can make that claim?

Kardashian and West are not happy about some lost moolah. Despite inviting an entire film crew to capture every second of West’s “romantic” proposal the couple have filed a lawsuit against YouTube cofounder Chad Hurley who posted video of the proposal online after the event. E! News reports that that a number of media sites ran a fuzzy two and a half minutes of footage stamped with the name of Hurley’s new website MixBit. The complaint states that while Hurley was at the event he signed a confidentiality agreement. The couple are asking for unspecified damages for alleged breach of contract, fraud and unjust enrichment. Poor things.

Daniel Radcliffe’s latest announced role is the lead in Gold, which will explore the rivalry between Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett
Daniel Radcliffe has done a good job of choosing projects following the conclusion of the Harry Potter series, if there has been one thing that has been lacking however is the type of role that will get serious awards season recognition (although, to be fair, he doesn't seem to be choosing his projects based on potential For Your Consideration adverts).
Still, the latest project he’s attached to you would have thought would put him in good stead in that regard, as he’s attached to play Sebastian Coe in Gold. Biopics, when done well, are usually magnets for awards season recognition after all.
The film's synopsis tells of Sebastian Coe being a quiet loner, 'driven to the limit of his endeavour by his ambitious father'.

Following their successful collaboration on The Woman In Black, director James Watkins and star Daniel Radcliffe will eschew the sequel – currently in pre-production – and instead, go for Gold. Spandau Ballet fans need not apply, however, for this is a film about the epic rivalry that shaped British Athletics in the early eighties.
The fully authorized book, The Perfect Distance – Ovett & Coe: The Record-Breaking Rivalry by journalist Pat Butcher, has been adapted for the big screen by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), with Radcliffe cast as Coe. Hot on the heels of Ron Howard’s racing rivalry tale Rush, Gold will dramatize the competitive relationship between Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett – two British athletes that pushed each other to greater and greater heights in what is widely regarded as the golden era of the sport.
