Rufus Sewell stars as Prince Andrew, Billie Piper plays Sam McAlister, and Gillian Anderson is Emily Maitlis. The cast also includes Keeley Hawes and Romola Garai.
Scoop is based on McAlister’s memoir Scoops: Behind The Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interview and was adapted by Peter Moffatt and Geoff Bussetil. The biggest scoop of the century is pinning the British royal family to a sex trafficking scandal, as relived in Netflix film “Scoop.”
The feature, directed by Philip Martin and based on former “Newsnight” producer Sam McAlister’s memoir “Scoops: Behind The Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interview,” stars Gillian Anderson as BBC anchor Emily Maitlis, who infamously interviewed a disgraced Prince Andrew (Rufus Sewell) about his ties to Jeffrey Epstein in 2019.
“Scoop” is written by Peter Moffatt and Geoff Bussetil, with Billie Piper starring as producer/author McAlister. Keeley Hawes and Romola Garai co-star.
The film debuts on Netflix, following the conclusion of royal family drama “The Crown” in 2023. To note, “Scoop” lead star Anderson appeared on “The Crown” as Margaret Thatcher.
“Scoop” centers on the behind-the-scenes push to land an interview with Prince Andrew after the royal was listed in court papers as part of a U.

Anderson stars alongside Rufus Sewell, Billie Piper and Keely Hawes in the upcoming film, which provides a behind-the-scenes look into how the November 2019 Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew about his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein came to be.
“This is the story. The only story. I want it for us,” Maitlis tells the news program’s producer Sam McAlister (Piper) after the women uncover details about the Duke of York’s alleged involvement in Epstein’s scandal. Once the interview is secured, McAlister shares the details in a voiceover: “Thursday, 2 p.m., the palace. Two chairs in the middle of the floor, six feet apart.”
Shortly before her bombshell chat with Prince Andrew, Maitlis nervously touches up her makeup a bathroom at Buckingham Palace alongside McAlister.

The very public catalyst that led to Prince Andrew’s dramatic fall from grace is heading to Netflix.
The streamer has acquired Scoop, a feature film based on the story behind the disgraced royal’s appearance on the BBC’s flagship news show Newsnight in 2019 — an hour of television that became one of the most significant, notorious and ridiculed interviews in recent years (and one that was then used against Andrew in the civil case filed by his sexual assault accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre).
Now in production, the film — which was first announced last year — will star Rufus Sewell The Diplomat, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel) as Andrew and Gillian Anderson (Sex Education, The Crown) as Emily Maitlis, Newsnight’s former lead presenter who interviewed the prince. Netflix has revealed it has cast Gillian Anderson to play former BBC news anchor Emily Maitlis in “Scoop,” a film about Prince Andrew’s disastrous “Newsnight” interview in 2019.
The disgraced royal will be played by Rufus Sewell (“Old”) while Billie Piper (“I Hate Suzie”) and Keeley Hawes (“Stonehouse) join as TV producer Sam McAlister, who negotiated and secured the interview, and Andrew’s former private secretary Amanda Thirsk, respectively.
“Scoop” is adapted from McAlister’s book “Scoops: Behind The Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interviews,” in which she details what happened behind the scenes of the interview, which is widely credited as being the final nail in the coffin of Andrew’s public role. Following its broadcast, in Nov. 2019, he was effectively banned from appearing at public events with the royals, stripped of many of his patronages and roles and forbidden from using the honorific “His Royal Highness.

It’s been another year of format fun in television, with Dutch mystery competition series The Traitors emerging as a new global hit, especially in the UK on the BBC, while the likes of Big Brother and Survivor have fronted a reboots commissioning revival that has divided entertainment producers, buyers and sellers. As the year comes to a close and the world heads into 2023 under threat of recession and belt-tightening, Deadline has placed six new formats that could help shape the genre in the spotlight. As is often the case, programs from the Netherlands dominate, with three on our list, while others hail from the UK and Canada.

BBC Studios is continuing its acquisitions spree in the UK.
It has taken full ownership of Voltage TV, the London-based unscripted indie behind British series such as BBC Two’s Inside the Factory, ITV’s DNA Journey and Channel 4’s The British Tribe Next Door.
This marks the first time the BBC’s commercial arm has jumped straight to a 100 stake in a producer. It usually builds stakes over several years before taking full control — a model it used last month to buy drama producer Firebird Pictures.
Among those benefitting from the deal is the Channel 4, whose Channel 4 Growth Fund has owned a minority stake in Voltage in 2015.
Sanjay Singhal and Steve Nam founded Voltage in 2013. They have a pre-established relationship with BBC Studios, which sells DNA Journey as a format internationally, and their indie will sit alongside factual divisions such as The Natural History Unit, Events Production, Factual Entertainment Productions,...

Netflix is set to grow its existing co-production partnership with U.K. public service broadcasters (PSBs), a senior executive has revealed.
Speaking on the second and final day of the Royal Television Society convention at Cambridge, Brandon Riegg, Los Angeles-based vice president, unscripted and documentary Series at Netflix, said that since 2017, the streamer had invested in more than 40 co-productions in the U.K., worth tens of millions of pounds. “If anything, it’ll grow as we go forward,” Riegg said.
“A big benefit of a coproduction model is we have partnerships with PSBs that have great creative instincts, we defer to them creatively,” said Riegg. “It’s a wonderful model, because we get terrific programming. And we are able to spread the work around and that allows PSBs to partner with us on it. So that’s been a great initiative, I would expect us to steadily increase the volume of that.

The UK Government’s Minister for Media and Data, John Whittingdale, waged battle with UK TV professionals over the future of Channel 4 at this year’s Closing Debate at the Edinburgh TV Festival.
Reiterating his previous explanations for wanting the channel to be sold, Whittingdale referred to the changing TV market and the squeeze of advertising revenue, meaning Channel 4 could not be sustained in its present business model.
But he went further, intimating that the sale could actually protect some of the values fans of Channel 4 in its current form hold dear, and even help protect small independent producers, saying:
“Channel 4 has always been a combination of very commercial content balanced with extremely distinctive, more edgy content. The brand is one of the attractions, and that will be preserved by the remit. We’re going to make it clear that the remit is there and will stay.”

“Channel 4 has always been a combination of very commercial content balanced with extremely distinctive, more edgy content. The brand is one of the attractions, and that will be preserved by the remit. We’re going to make it clear that the remit is there and will stay.”
Whittingdale pointed out that,...

Channel 4 is prepping a documentary on the coronavirus, which has killed nearly 3,000 people.
The British broadcaster has ordered The Race Against the Virus from Voltage TV. The “science thriller” will feature access to labs and scientists across the globe that are spearheading the response to the current pandemic threat.

The Race Against the Virus was commissioned by C4’s Head of Specialist Factual, Fatima Salaria, and will be exec produced by Voltage TV’s Sanjay Singhal. The film is in production and will air this summer.
Salaria said, “It’s the biggest science story of the year, with incredible complexity and an extraordinary narrative that’s changing by the minute.

ITV is returning to a genealogy documentary with two of its biggest stars, Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, after it was parked last year because McPartlin pled guilty to drunken driving.
Ant & Dec’s DNA Journey, produced by Voltage TV and Ant and Dec’s indie Mitre Television, originally was commissioned in 2017 as a 90-minute special.
But ITV put the film on hold as McPartlin grappled with personal issues including a drunken-driving charge, for which he eventually was fined £86,000 in April 2018.
But after McPartlin returned to British TV screens in 2019, ITV now is dusting off Ant & Dec’s DNA Journey. It will air before the end of the year – and this time it will be a two-part special.
Over the course of the documentary, the Britain’s Got Talent hosts will trace their bloodlines using their DNA to search their ancestral history. They will travel from Ireland to the U.

Discovery Channel has crashed a plane in the Mexican desert for its new series "Curiosity." According to the network, a Boeing 727 passenger jet was deliberately crashed in an uninhabited Mexican desert. No damages or injuries occurred.
No passengers were on the plane, instead it was packed with science experiments like crash test dummies. Cameras recorded the crash from inside the plane, on the ground, from other planes and from the ejecting pilot's helmet.
"This ground breaking project features an actual crash of a passenger jet and explores the big questions about how to make plane crashes more survivable; it's the ideal premiere episode for our 'Curiosity' series that stirs the imagination of our audience, bravely asking questions and fearlessly seeking answers. This latest production captures that audaciousness perfectly and I can't wait to share it," Eileen O'Neill, group president of Discovery and TLC Networks, said in a statement.
