Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of tonight’s Empire Season 5 finale.
“The idea of moving forward without him is a true challenge, and no decisions have been made as of yet of how we move forward,” Empire showrunner Brett Mahoney admits of the contentious Jussie Smollett’s exit from the Fox series at the end of the just-concluded fifth season.
“We’ll work that out when reconvene the room and we come up with the creative,” the executive producer adds of the upcoming Season 6 of Fox’s hip hop drama.
Although Smollett was written out of the final two episodes of the Lee Daniels- and Danny Strong-created series following his legal troubles in Chicago, tonight’s Mahoney co-written “The Roughest Day” didn’t miss a beat in turning out to be the whirlwind ending we’ve come to expect from an Empire finale.

The odds are stacked against Andre Lyon.
Empire Season 5 Episode 16 revealed that Cookie's eldest son's prognosis went from being good to bleak, and it was a real gut punch.
Doctor Swain had nothing but good news for Andre over the last handful of episodes. It seemed like he was in the clear.
It's a devastating blow to learn that his heart muscle has gotten destroyed as a result of the cancer treatment. Being in remission is only half the battle in these instances.
There is irreversible damage that certain treatments can do to the body, and "Never Doubt I Love" highlighted that.
Lucious recognized there was something amiss with Andre when he invited Kingsley to the bachelor party and went on to tell him that he would be handed the keys to the kingdom of as the eldest surviving son of Lucious.

During a live Q&A with the Empire cast, Trai Byers proved that despite his character Andre Lyon’s musical shortcomings, the actor can belt it out in real life.
Around the 30-minute mark, after Byers discusses how Andre feels ostracized because he’s the only Lyon who can’t lay down his own tracks, the moderator, EW‘s Tim Stack, brings up Byers’ great singing voice. Taraji P. Henson adds to his reveal by encouraging Byers to perform live. Taking center stage, the actor soulfully sings a few lines of Stevie Wonder’s “Lately,” leaving the crowd swooning.
His other co-star stars Terrence Howard. Jussie Smollett, Bryshere Gray, Kaitlin Doubleday, and Grace Gealey, as well as producers Lee Daniels, Danny Strong, Brian Grazer, and Ilene Chailken all cheered on in support.

Chicago – The excellent film “Selma” focuses on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. But just as important as King were the marchers from supporting civil rights societies, such as the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (Sncc), and their leaders like James Forman, portrayed in the film by Trai Byers.
Byers is an up-and-coming actor, with “Selma” being his first major film after stints on the daytime drama “All My Children” and the revival of “90210.” But besides “Selma,” Byers has a high profile part as Andre Lyon, the son of lead character Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) on the huge new Fox Network hit, “Empire.” The freshman drama has already been picked up for a second season, and its maneuverings within the Shakespeare-in-the-music-industry vibe has connected with viewers.
