Exclusive: Leonardo DiCaprio and revered environmental activist Jane Goodall will executive produce Howl, a film following an abandoned family dog and a young wolf, which will unfold from the animals’ perspective. The Promethean Pictures movie has just entered production, we can reveal. It is not an environment film per se, but the team behind it plans to give moviegoers a transformative view of the natural world.
Set against the backdrop of a harsh winter, the movie will follow Harry, a family dog who is inadvertently left home alone and whose owners then die in an accident. Harry goes through a rollercoaster survival ride that brings him into contact with a wolf. The pair must overcome their mutual fear and suspicion, and ultimately they develop a close bond. The story is animal-led, but there will be some human characters with casting news to follow.

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for “Notes on a Scandal,” “Last Summer,” and “May December.“]
“May December” has been called a dark comedy and a campy take on “Persona” (though director Todd Haynes disdains the “camp” label). It inspired an unexpected Netflix meme-based social media push capitalizing on the shirtless scenes of supporting star Charles Melton, and now this tale of abuse has been nominated for, of all things, a comedy at this year’s Golden Globes. (Netflix submitted the film as such.)
It seems that “May December” has led to every conversation but what it’s actually about: grooming.
The film tracks the fallout of Gracie, an adult woman (Julianne Moore) who seduced a 12-year-old boy (played as an adult by Charles Melton), had his children, went to jail for her misdeeds, and — eventually — married her victim. Natalie Portman portrays Elizabeth, an actress playing Gracie in a big-screen adaptation of her life.

Today on Horror Highlights: The Kickstarter launch for Mixtape Massacre: Invasion Expansion, the trailer and release details for A Good Woman is Hard to Find, and casting announcements for Mixxer.
Mixtape Massacre: Invasion Expansion: The Kickstarter for the Invasion Expansion for Mixtape Massacre has just gone live! For those that haven't had a chance to play the main game, it's one of my favorite horror board games and I highly recommend giving it a try. If you have the game or just picked it up, you'll want to support their new expansion, which dives into the world of otherworldly creatures and government cover-ups.
Supporting the Kickstarter not only gives you the opportunity to pick up the expansion and soon as it's released, but help unlock stretch goals that include a new slasher and survivor.

U.K. cinemas remain shuttered due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and while some of the large chains with deep pockets have the wherewithal to ride out the crisis, independent cinemas are suffering. Some U.K. distributors have come up with solutions to remedy this.
Modern Films was due to release Haifaa Al-Mansour’s festival favorite “The Perfect Candidate” theatrically on March 27, but instead released it online on Curzon Home Cinema, the BFI Player and its own website. Customers choosing to rent the film via Modern’s website will see a drop-down menu at the purchase point that allows them to select and support a cinema of their choice. Part of the proceeds will go directly back to the cinema.
Similarly, 606 Distribution, which has released Nora Fingscheidt’s Berlin winner “System Crasher” online via Vimeo, gives renters the option to select a cinema of their choice who will receive 10% of the after-tax profit.

Vivid performances power the story of a single mother faced with terrifying choices when a drug dealer invades her home
The flicker of exploitation-movie glee in the title of Abner Pastoll’s third feature flowers horribly in the central dilemma facing single mother Sarah (Sarah Bolger) when her home is invaded by criminal bottom-feeder Tito (Andrew Simpson). Like The Wire’s Omar, he is a dealer who steals from other dealers, looking for somewhere to stash his ill-gotten gains. Not only must Sarah shield her two children from the interloper, but there’s the issue of whom the drugs really belong to.
Set in an unnamed Northern Irish city (with soaring drone shots of Belfast), A Good Woman Is Hard to Find also semi-successfully blends in kitchen-sink grit, emphasising Sarah’s precarious status in trips to the supermarket where she struggles to settle the bill, and her vulnerability in the...

Director Abner Pastoll’s icy Irish thriller opens brilliantly with a blood smudged woman showering while an ominous score throbs in the backdrop, implying something petrifying is about to happen. The music explodes into a terrifying crescendo as the scene flits into a low gliding aerial view of a suburban neighbourhood, recalling the eerie intro to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.
We then dart back in time to meet protagonist Sarah (Sarah Bolger): a twenty-something, single mother, battling grief following the recent death of her husband. Sarah’s life is then hurled into further turmoil after local ruffian Tito (Andrew Simpson) breaks into her home to hide a stash of cocaine he stole from local gangsters.
After a quite tight set-up, Ronan Blaney’s script simmers during slow scenes establishing secondary characters, which are hugely detrimental to the temper and flow. While more emphasis should have been on plot progression,...

As you all know, dogs are a staple of the John Wick franchise and in the trailer for John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, we see that Halle Berry’s character Sofia has two dogs that are her protectors. These dogs will fight alongside her and John in the film.
It was previously explained that these two Belgian Malinois dogs represent someone that Sofia has lost. Director Chad Stahelski said, “Whereas John’s puppy was symbolic of his wife, Halle’s two dogs are symbolic of someone she’s lost.” They also built a whole action sequence around the dogs! It was also explained that they are “canine assistants…. They work very well tactically.”
Well, it turns out that Berry actually trained these two dogs herself! When explaining why they decided to take that route, the director told Collider:
“We didn’t want a trainer hiding behind a set piece...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by IFC Films. Director/writer: Stephen Fingleton. Cast: Mia Goth, Martin McCann and Andrew Simpson. The Survivalist is an indie film from Northern Irish director Stephen Fingleton. This title has been completed since 2015 and it has appeared at a number of film festivals, in the interim. In the future, oil is scarce and the population is dwindling as people turn on each other. Alone, one man has survived the post-collapse world by laying low and farming. This strategy for survival quietens the film considerably. Much of the film is told via body language, through the film's trio of characters. And, The Survivalist answers an important question, for this viewer, how would the Irish survive the looming apocalypse? The Survivalist is more than a worst-case scenario and film fans are encouraged to find out how. The protagonist never speaks his name.

Let the games begin! We have clips from IFC Midnight's Road Games and Slasher Season 1, which will both be released on Blu-ray by Scream Factory on July 12th.
Road Games Blu-ray / DVD: "After a disastrous summer trip, Jack (Andrew Simpson, Rebellion) finds himself hitchhiking through the sun-drenched rural French countryside with nothing but his British passport. Unaware of dangers that are plaguing the roads, he tries without much success to get home. Along the way, he partners with another hitchhiker, a beautiful French girl, Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume, Kiss of the Damned). But when they accept a ride from a local oddball (Frédéric Pierrot, The Returned), the pair find themselves thrown in a deadly game of cat and mouse in which nothing is what it seems. Bursting with nonstop twists and turns and an undercurrent of Hitchcockian malice, this riveting psychological thriller is a hell of a ride.

From Scream Factory: “We are proud to announce that we have Three new IFC Midnight films planned for release on Blu-ray and DVD this July!
The Pack (2015) Man’s best friend becomes his worst nightmare when a horde of bloodthirsty wild dogs descends upon a family’s farmhouse. In a remote stretch of the Australian Outback, a sheep rancher (Jack Campbell), his veterinarian wife (Anna Lise Phillips), and their two teenage children live in bucolic isolation — until a horrifying night when a pack of fang-baring, four-legged, rabid beasts besiege their home. With no one around to help them, the family must band together to survive — or else become canine kibble. Generating...

One of the more intriguing thrillers I’ve seen in some time is Road Games, which was written and directed by Abner Pastoll and recently debuted on VOD courtesy of IFC Midnight. Starring Andrew Simpson, Joséphine de La Baume, Barbara Crampton, and Frédéric Pierrot, the film begins as a whodunit road movie and is later infused with some unexpectedly fun slasher undertones.
Daily Dead recently sat down with both Pastoll and genre legend Crampton to hear more about their collaboration, Pastoll’s approach to crafting the film’s mystery, their experiences shooting Road Games, and much more.
Congrats on making a movie that keeps you guessing and takes a few unexpected turns. Abner, what were your inspirations behind this story and your approach to really toying with viewers?
Abner Pastoll: In terms of playing with people’s suspicions, those inspirations are totally from Hitchcock’s films because he would always do that.

Hitchin’ a Ride: Pastoll’s Debut an Assortment of Tropes
No, it’s not a remake of the 1981 Richard Franklin thriller starring Stacy Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis, but Abner Pastoll’s debut borrows the title, along with elements from a number of other, far better narratives for Road Games. Curiously, for most of the running time, his characters are actually not even on the road, but this is only one of several aggravating details in a film laboring to conjure thrills solely through the use of withholding pertinent information from the audience for an improbable reveal. Though it has all the right elements to convey technical proficiency, this is a watered down genre treatment which does disservice to notable cast members, which includes amongst its talent the strange plumage of 80s cult star Barbara Crampton.

I love movies like Road Games that seem to toy with you from beginning to end, and yet, sometimes those are the hardest films to discuss in a review because you never want to reveal too much for potential viewers. That being said, writer/director Abner Pastoll does a fantastic job of playing up suspicions throughout Road Games, a film that’s shrouded in a dubious sense of mystery and has a bit of a Hitchcockian sensibility to it as well. Its ending may be a bit divisive to many, but I dug the direction Pastoll goes with his surprising, take-no-prisoners finale.
Road Games follows British hitchhiker Jack (Andrew Simpson) as he makes his way through the sun-soaked countryside in France, traveling with only his passport and doing everything he can to get back home to England after his idyllic vacation goes horribly wrong. Along the way, he crosses paths...

Somewhere between The Hitcher and High Tension exists Abner Pastoll’s Road Games, a bright, colorful descent into hitchhiking madness. Of course, with the mention of Alexandre Aja’s *arguably* mind-bending thriller, one can assume there’s more to Pastoll’s story than meets the eye. A killer terrorizes lonely travelers begging for a quick ride, but his/her identity remains masked, because he/she could be any of the (few) characters we’ve already encountered. For an hour and a half, Pastoll unfolds this countryside”Whodunit” caper – one littered with distracting red herrings – but, herein lies the problem: the mystery itself isn’t very mysterious.
Andrew Simpson stars as Jack, a ride-needing wanderer who can’t seem to catch a break. While seeking transportation, he’s joined by a female companion named Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume), who gets thrown out of a car after bickering with its male driver.

In a kill-or-be-killed world where starvation is rife and strangers are always dangerous, The Survivalist lives off the grid, and by his wits. When a starving woman and her teenage daughter discover his forest refuge, his loneliness drives him to overcome his suspicion and strike a bargain with them in return for bed and board. But as desire becomes stronger than necessity, the exchange becomes an uneasy, ongoing arrangement which threatens not only his carefully constructed world but also his life.
If I had to live alone in a forest, I probably wouldn’t last long enough to tweet for help. It would be a #disaster. The Survivalist, however, seems to have got surviving down (although with a name like that, who is surprised?...

Hollywood has been flush with post-apocalyptic stories, but only recently have the stories started focusing on smaller units. Following in the footsteps of last year’s Z For Zachariah, Stephen Fingleton‘s The Survivalist centers on a trio of people struggling to survive in the wake of a famine. Unlike the picture-perfect leads of Z For Zachariah, these characters have all been pushed through the emotional grinder. They’re gaunt, paranoid, and only a step above feral.
Martin McCan is the titular survivalist, a tribal lone wolf whose face is evidence of years of a hardscrabble life. When an elderly woman and her teenage relative come knocking on his door, he reluctantly allows them to stay. But as the trailer shows, he may have been better off remaining a loner. Also starring Mia Goth, Andrew Simpson, Olwen Fouere, and Douglas Russel, watch the trailer below, and read our review here.

The comic has emerged as the front-runner to play the part in a biopic for The Weinstein Company directed by Lee Daniels (The Butler). Epps was previously signed on to play Pryor back in 2005 and met with the late comedian while he was still alive to prepare for the role, but that project fell through. Worried your sex life isn't like it looks on TV or in the movies? Don't be. Sex involving food, a piano or gunfire is never as fun as it sounds
When you've been brought up with pop culture as your unofficial guardian, it's easy to assume that you've been lumbered with the world's dullest sex life. You're forever comparing your experiences with those you see on screen, and you beat yourself up when you inevitably fall short.
For instance, not one single person has ever attempted to stab me to death with a pickaxe mid-coitus, like Sharon Stone did to that poor chump at the start of Basic Instinct. No union of mine has ever ended with my partner shooting a baddie in the chest on a moving train at the point of orgasm, like Cindy Crawford did in Fair Game. Nor, to my eternal annoyance, have I ever been...

This is the Pure Movies review of Good Vibrations, directed by Lisa Barros D'Sa and Glenn Leyburn, starring Jodie Whittaker, Dylan Moran, Richard Dormer, Adrian Dunbar, Mark Ryder, Andrew Simpson and Demetri Goritsas. Reviewed by Dan Higgins for @puremovies. "New York have the haircuts, London have the trousers, Belfast has the reason" shouts Terri Hooley across a crowded Ulster Hall. The fact that his guest list for the fundraising concert is so big that he's making a loss on the door doesn't affect him. This was the Woodstock of Belfast Punk. When Hooley opened Good Vibrations records on Great Victoria Street a year or so into the troubles in Belfast, he was going against the norm. Everyone was leaving Belfast, nobody was starting up businesses. But Hooley would never have predicted what came next.

Shooting is underway in Belfast on a modern reworking of the Charles Dickens classic novel for the BBC called ‘The Life and Adventures of Nick Nickleby' with a cast of mainly Northern Irish actors.
23 year old Andrew Simpson (represented by United Agents), best known for starring opposite Cate Blanchett in ‘Notes on a Scandal’, takes the lead role of Nick.
Produced by double BAFTA-winning production company Kindle Entertainment and directed by David Innes Edwards, the five-episode series will focus on lead character Nick, who investigates corruption in care homes for the elderly.
The Life and Adventures of Nick Nickleby has been updated to reflect concerns and questions about modern Britain, so Dickens’ exploration of corruption within private boarding schools is transposed to care-homes for the elderly. Just as Dickens did, the drama invites the audience to reflect on how the vulnerable suffer when the pursuit of profit is valued more than human kindness.

The story follows jaded older teacher Barbara Covett (Judi Dench), who contrives to ensnare young and beautiful new teacher Bathsheba Hart (Cate Blanchett). In the meantime, 15-year old student Steve Connolly (Andrew Simpson) entices Bathsheba into a turbulent affair, while Sheba's husband (Bill Nighy) and children all tear at Sheba's loyalties. Credible characters fill Patrick Marber's clever script, (from Zoe Heller's novel): the older feeble staff member with vain hopes of attracting the new filly in the staff room, the management-minded headmaster,...

This is the Pure Movies review of Perrier's Bounty, directed by Ian Fitzgibbon and starring Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson, Jim Broadbent, Domhnall Gleeson, Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Simpson, Padraic Delaney and Natalie Britton. The best stories, characters, images and ideas persist in the mind when the credits roll, but Perrier’s Bounty meekly expires as the screen fades to black. As the names of its stellar cast reeled away it was hard not to reflect on where it went wrong. Sparsely scattered moments of quality make it tempting to wonder whether its broad strokes and familiar arcs were signs of deliberate compromise. It has the whiff of something targeted at an international market and in the end, in spite of the talent involved, Perrier’s fizz falls flat.

Obviously, this film attracts you because of the description of the synopsis on the DVD's back cover. Besides, the film lives up to your expectations mostly because of the wicked duo made of Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett. All in all, Notes on a Scandal is one of the best British films I've seen.
Barbara Covett (Judi Dench) is a History teacher in High school. She's a lonely person and her most intimate relationship is with her personal diary. When Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett) joins the school as the new art teacher, Barbara feels that a friendship between Sheba and her is developing. However, when Barbara discovers that Sheba is having an affair with Steven Conolly (Andrew Simpson), a 15 years old student, her jealousy and her anger is gradually put on display.
Prior to watching this film, I didn't know anything about it and I didn't read the novel by Zöe Heller.
