As his film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ starring Alia Bhatt clocked two years since its release in Hindi cinema, actor-dancer Shantanu Maheshwari has opened up about playing Afsaan in the movie and working with ‘master’ Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Shantanu recalled his unforgettable journey with the film and said: “It doesn’t feel like ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ has turned two, It feels like just a few days back I was shooting with Sanjay sir and learning from him on the sets.
“Everyone continues to remember me for playing Afsaan and it’s great to be remembered for such a beautiful character.”
On working with Bhansali, Shantanu said that it was a gratifying experience to just be on the set with somebody like the acclaimed filmmaker.
“And watch him spin his magic wand right in front of you. I will forever remember all the skills and techniques I got to learn while being on the set with the master himself.

Bambai Meri Jaan is creating waves by showcasing stories that may be familiar to many of us. What makes this ten-episode-long show different from the usual fare we have watched on this subject over the years is the treatment of the story and the screenplay. This story is extensively covered in pieces of media like books, case studies, and articles. There are plenty of Hindi films as well that were either successful in being accurate portrayals of that era or they were just over-the-top dramatization, which in most cases did not give the audience the right picture to understand the nexus and the leaders.
Bambai Meri Jaan is based on the bestselling book ‘Dongri to Dubai’ written by India’s top investigative journalist S. Hussain Zaidi. ‘Dongri to Dubai’ has been the source material for many movies made in the gangster drama genre. What makes them less engaging than Shujaat Saudagar...

Alia Bhatt stars as schmaltz and spectacular fantasy-musical setpieces balance the gruesomeness of this true-crime yarn
Here is a luxuriously sleazy-sentimental melodrama about the Mumbai underworld, directed with gusto by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the powerhouse Bollywood film-maker who 20 years ago had a Bafta nomination for his mighty epic Devdas. It is an adaptation from a tale in the true-crime reportage bestseller Mafia Queens of Mumbai by Hussain Zaidi: the story of Gangubai Kathiawadi, who in the 60s was tricked and trafficked into prostitution in Mumbai’s Kamathipura red-light zone, but through her survivor’s ruthlessness and shrewd cultivation of political connections rose to become an underworld madam involved in drugs and violent crime. She then parlayed this gangland prestige into a media profile, campaigning for sex workers’ rights, even – according to legend – meeting to discuss these with India’s first prime minister Nehru himself.

If you have been reading us in the past few years, you will have probably realized that we have a particular love from crime thrillers, here in Asian Movie Pulse. However, we felt that Korean first and Japanese second are the ones that mostly draw the attention of the audience, and thus, we decided to focus in another industry which actually thrives on a number of films of the category, the Indian one. “Gangs of Wasseypur” may be the most renowned, but we thought we should also present a number of others that are definitely worth a watch, and not only from fans of the category. Here are 15 of the best, in chronological order
1. Black Friday
When it comes to crime thrillers, Anurag Kashyap is a “go-to” name. While most of his filmography will satisfy the genre aficionados, one of his earlier movies, almost two-decades-old “Black Friday”, deserves special attention.

Mumbai, Feb 26: Bollywood filmmakers never miss a chance to sensationalize, to grab a few extra eyeballs. This year, makers seem to have hit the idea of quirky titles. Liger to Looop Lapeta, Pagglait to Bell Bottom, and Gangubai Kathiawadi to Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi, names of films really take an unusual turn this year.
Quirky titles bordering on being tongue-twisters, of course are not new to Bollywood. In the past, the industry made Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Badhti Ka Naam Dadhi, Jal Bin Machhli Nritya Bin Bijli, Allah Meherban Toh Gadha Pahelwan and Dhoti Lota Aur Chowpatty.
Here are some recent titles that render the films in question a dash of added audience interest.
Liger
Imagine a cross breed between a Lion and Tiger! That's Vijay Deverakonda for you - at least in spirit, going by the title of his next film. The poster and title created a frenzy on social media upon launch.

Having a great idea for a film does not guarantee success, particularly when the direction and the editing are of average level. Unfortunately, this is exactly the case with “Class of ’83”.
The script is based on the homonymous novel by leading crime journalist Hussain Zaidi, which in turn is based on the lives of real-life cops, like Pradeep Sharma and Vijay Salaskar, who trained under Dgp Arvind Inamdar when he was head of the Maharashtra Police Academy. The story is set in 80’s Bombay when crime was quite dominant, as a result of unemployment of young men due to an ongoing mill strike, which led them, en masse, to join organized gangs, whose ties with political authority were stronger than ever.

Class Of ‘83 (Netflix)
Starring Bobby Deol, Anup Soni, Joy Sengupta
Directed by Atul Sabharwal
In how many films from Prakash Mehra’s Zanjeer and Shimit Amin’s Ab Tak Chappan to Mahesh Manjrekar’s Kurukshetra and Prabhudheva’s Wanted have we seen the cop-hero battling the dreaded ‘System’ from the outside ?
As far as originality goes Class Of 83 scores poorly. It looks like an encore of dozens anti-establishment angry-cop films we have seen over the years, when in truth Class Of 83 is The original Dirty Harry of Indian cinema. In the 1971 game-changing cops film , Clint Eastwood throws his police badge in the muddy water and deals with a rampageous killer as he deems fit.
Things are not that simple for super-cop Vijay Singh (played with suspicious stoicism by Bobby Deol). Unlike ‘Dirty’Harry Eastwood, Deol has to play the law enforcer within the rulebook. Also he is not a...

Over the years maverick director Sanjay Gupta has become synonyms for his gritty gangster flicks like the 'Shootout' series. Well after his recent release Jazbaa that featured Irrfan Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan we hear that Gupta is all set for his next that will feature Abhishek Bachchan. In fact, the film in question is titled Ek Tha Gangster which will feature Abhishek Bachchan in the role of a gangster. The racy thriller is based on S. Hussain Zaidi's 2014 bestseller, Byculla to Bangkok, a sequel to his 2012 novel, Dongri to Dubai. The story of the film will trace how youngsters were recruited and they went on to become local goons like Arun Gawli, Ashwin Naik and Chhota Rajan. However, despite being a gangster flick we hear that the film won't focus on the dreaded gangster, but instead it will follow the lives of the cops and politicians who are also involved.

The year 2015 has been one of mixed proportions for Bollywood especially in terms of box office collections, while on one hand we have seen some rather unconventional films striking a chord with the audience and making it big at the Bo, there have been other that were expected to do well, but for some reason failed to hit the mark. However, Sajid Nadiadwala's recent release Phantom featuring Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif, despite the initial sluggish start has managed to hit the bullseye. In fact, Phantom managed to amass Rs. 33.18 crores (Friday Rs.8.46 cr, Saturday Rs. 12.78 cr, Sunday Rs. 11.94 cr) over its opening weekend a feat that was said to be a rather farfetched task by many a trade analysts. However the overall hype surrounding the film, the director's recent success with Bajrangi Bhaijaan, the rather patriotic feel to the film and most of all the producer's hit...

Kabir Khan’s pacy film about an army officer sent to flush out the killers of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks is a reckless yet revealing piece of pulp fiction
Just as 9/11 gave rise, after an appropriate mourning period, to a decade of soul- and cave-searching in American cinema, so the spectre of the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai in 2008 seems likely to hover over Indian cinema for the foreseeable future. Already we’ve had 2013’s Greengrassy docudrama The Attacks of 26/11, the veteran Ram Gopal Varma’s sober recounting of these events from the perspective of Rakesh Maria, the Mumbai chief of police. There now arrives Phantom, Kabir Khan’s adaptation of Hussain Zaidi’s speculative fiction Mumbai Avengers, which owes more to the 24/Homeland school of counterterrorism, vacillating as it does between pulpy pertinence and arrant wish-fulfilment.
Objections have already been lodged by both Médecins Sans Frontières and the suspected Pakistani terrorist Hafiz Saeed,...

A pacy grace envelopes Kabir Khan’s new political thriller. You can almost smell the tension in the air. If Bajrangi Bhaijaan was a agreeable gentle cup of lemon tea Phantom is a the bracing percolating morning cup of coffee that makes you jump out of your bed and seize the day.
Kabir’s second film in six weeks after the epic success of Bajrangi Bhaijaan takes an aggressive what-if stand against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. It does so with a cool candour that makes for a bracing jolting wake-up call for the two nations at a proxy war rattling sabres across the barbed fence.
Phantom works on a simple premise. You give us 26/11. We take revenge. As simple as that. In many ways the very talented Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub playing a raw Raw agent (no, I am not stammering) represents the voice of the nation. His inexperience among veterans who plot...

Katrina Kaif, who last performed stunts in Dhoom 3, will be seen in an action packed avatar in the upcoming Kabir Khan directorial Phantom. From what we hear, the actress will be seen in the role of a Parsi girl in the film. Katrina Kaif, who has previously played the role of a dancer, Raw agent and so on, will be seen playing a London based aid worker. Apparently, her role in Phantom has been inspired from real life aid workers with whom Kabir has interacted during his days as a documentary filmmaker. It is being said that Katrina gets involved in the mission after she has been sent by the aid organization to seek revenge from the ones who are responsible for the 26/11 attacks. Phantom, that stars Saif Ali Khan as the male lead, is based on the consequences post the infamous 26/11 attacks in Mumbai wherein a highly skilled team...

Kabir Khan's post-Bajrangi Bhaijaan counter-terrorism drama Phantom which releases on August 28 has Saif Ali Khan playing an army officer out to seek revenge on the terrorists who masterminded the 26/11 attack on Mumbai. The film is based on author S Hussain Zaidi's novel Mumbai Avengers. In plot, mood and intent, Phantom is completely antithetical to Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Says a source close to Kabir Khan, "While in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Kabir champions the cause of cross-border friendship by showing an Indian Hanuman Bhakt helping a lost Pakistani girl find her way back home, Phantom will see Saif track down and kill Pakistani Isi agents who masterminded the Mumbai attacks." According to sources, "While Bajrangi and Salman would endear themselves to Pakistan, Phantom and Saif are hardly going to make our neighbouring country happy." While refraining from commenting on the content of either film, Kabir Khan says, "All I'll say is...
