“Ahsoka” Season 2 is in development with creator Dave Filoni, Lucasfilm has confirmed.
The news came with the reveal of the new “Star Wars” film “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” directed by Jon Favreau, which was unveiled Tuesday morning.
“‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ will lead Lucasfilm’s ongoing feature-development slate, including films helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni, who is also currently developing ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2, among those in the works,” the announcement said.
“Ahsoka,” which aired its Season 1 finale on Oct. 3, starred Rosario Dawson as the fan-favorite Jedi, who’s trying to save the galaxy from Grand Admiral Thrawn, a new threat after the fall of the Galactic Empire. Dawson first brought Ahsoka Tano to live-action in “The Mandalorian” Season 2 and also appeared on “The Book of Boba Fett.”

For filmmakers, few honors can compare to premiering a movie in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. And for fans of international cinema around the world, seeing a Cannes hit opening in theaters after a long wait can be one of the most exciting moviegoing events of the year. This weekend promises to bring such a treat to New York moviegoers, as Kaouther Ben Hania’s Tunisian metafictional documentary “Four Daughters” makes its way to select theaters.
The film tells the story of Olfa Hamrouni, a Tunisian woman who lost contact with two of her daughters when they left to join Isis. Hania documents the story of the family’s dissolution by casting two professional actors to play the estranged daughters. The narrative device invokes classic metafictional documentaries such as Abbas Kiarostami’s “Close-Up” by simultaneously telling a story and prompting viewers to question the reliability of the film in front of them.

This post contains spoilers for "Ahsoka" episode 3: "Time to Fly."
The latest episode of "Ahsoka," directed by Steph Green and written by Dave Filoni, adds more intricacy to the web of conspiracy surrounding the whereabouts of Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) and his potential return. Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson), alongside close confidantes Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth-Winstead) and Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), tries to edge closer to the truth of Ezra's disappearance alongside Thrawn, while weeding out Imperial loyalists hiding among the ranks of the fledgling New Republic. A connective tissue between the animated series, "Star Wars: Clone Wars" and "Star Wars Rebels," and the events of the sequel era are woven here, with familiar faces returning or reintroduced, including Chancellor Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly).

This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: Ahsoka" episode 3 — "Time to Fly"Things are kicking into high gear in part 3 of "Ahsoka." Directed again by Steph Green and written by Dave Filoni, the episode shows the inertia faced by the New Republic when it comes to taking any military action beyond the end of the war. Few seem to believe that Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) could be a threat to the New Republic, and others still think that the specter of Thrawn is just Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth-Winstead) trying to nab all the resources she can get to go on a selfish mission to look for her lost friend, Ezra Bridger (Emen Esfandi). While Hera spends her time arguing with Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly), the Chancellor of the Republic, another journey is underway. Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson), Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), and Huyang (David Tennant) travel to Seatos in...

This article contains spoilers for "Ahsoka."
After only two episodes of "Ahsoka," the hotly anticipated series already feels much more massive in scope than the other "Star Wars" television shows that have come before. That may be because of the looming backstory accompanying this particular plotline that ties directly into the already established lore of "The Mandalorian" and four animated seasons of "Star Wars Rebels." That's a lot of loose ends and story threads to keep up and contend with. There are much bigger ideas at play here, involving more complicated, new age concepts that delve into the more mystical side of the "Star Wars" galaxy. Suddenly, there are witches, ancient Force users, and the "Star Wars" equivalent of time travel to contend with.
This all makes the established universe feel larger than ever before. It's not just the epic stakes that make "Ahsoka" seem grander, however. The level of...

This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: Ahsoka" episode 2 -- "Toil and Trouble."
The second episode of "Ahsoka" sees Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) recovering from her dire injuries at the hands of Baylan Skoll's (Ray Stevenson) dark apprentice, Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno). Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) is understandably upset that Sabine put herself in such a reckless position and the two of them continue their bickering, further hinting at the strain their relationship went through during their first attempt at finding Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi).
After investigating Sabine's apartment in the old communications tower, Ahsoka finds a leftover Hk-series assassin droid and dispatches it. They're able to trace it back to Corellia, where Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) once operated shipyards for the Empire. While Sabine recovers, Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Chopper, and Ahsoka head to Corellia to investigate. There, they find Elsbeth's old operation still functioning and loyal to the Empire.

Disney+’s new lengthy trailer for Star Wars: Ahsoka provides our first look at a live-action Thrawn. Lars Mikkelsen provided the character’s voice in the animated Star War Rebels series and reprises his role in the latest addition to the Star Wars franchise.
In an interview with EW, Mikkelsen offered a short description of Thrawn.
“He’s a top strategist,” said Mikkelsen. “He’s always seven paces ahead of anybody else. And ruthless, of course. But only when it’s needed, actually. I think he thrives also with the creativity of the surroundings. I mean, he’s not using people in a bad way. He’s using their creativity to reach his goals.”
Rosario Dawson leads the cast in the titular role. The series also stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, and Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati.

Disney+ has released a new trailer for the upcoming “Star Wars” series, “Ahsoka,” providing fans a look at the series’ villain, Grand Admiral Thrawn.
It was announced in April at the Star Wars Celebration fan convention, that Lars Mikkelsen would be set to reprise his role as the “Star Wars” villain and embody the character in the live-action series. Thrawn was originally created by author Timothy Zahn as part of a series of 1990s Star Wars novels chronicling the events following 1983’s “Return of the Jedi,” and he quickly became a fan-favorite character.
However, after Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, Thrawn’s character was removed from the official “Star Wars” canon. Then in 2016, Dave Filoni revived the character and brought him back into a galaxy far, far away after adding him to the “Star Wars Rebels” animated series. Throughout the show, Mikkelsen voiced the character.

Emmy contender “Reality” (minimally) dramatizes Reality Winner’s arrest and interrogation by the FBI. The Nsa-linguist-turned-whistleblower received a record-long sentence, five years and three months, for stealing and disseminating classified documents related to Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
Tina Satter’s verbatim stage adaptation of the FBI transcript, the curiously (un)punctuated “Is This A Room,” sought to restore some of the agency that was taken from Winner when statements she had made prior to being formally arrested were levied against her in court. Jessica Kiang (Variety) argues just as much, writing that the framework “proves that sometimes what you say can be used for you too.” The play’s filmed rendition, also directed by Satter, got positive write-ups and unanimous praise for lead Sydney Sweeney after premiering at the Berlin International Film Festival, where HBO purchased it for an undisclosed price. The Writers Guild of America 2023 strike is continuing to make a dent in upcoming Hollywood projects.
The strike began May 2, with multiple productions halting in solidarity with the demonstrations. The WGA strike took effect after six weeks of unsuccessful negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, representing the likes of Netflix, Disney, Apple, NBCUniversal, Warner Bros., Paramount, Amazon, and more. Writers are demanding better pay, residuals structures, and protection against AI as a replacement tool for their work, among other concerns.
While the strike has not yet affected some upcoming consecutive seasons of fan-favorite shows, “Saturday Night Live” and a handful of late-night talk shows including Jimmy Kimmel, “The Late Show,” and “The Tonight Show” have gone dark. Manhattan picketers have also protested outside filming on the latest season of “Billions,” though the long-running Showtime series has yet to come to a full stop.

Exclusive: Fresh off the conclusion of Amazon’s long-running sci-fi series The Expanse, actor Wes Chatham is heading back to space as the latest addition to Disney+’s live-action Ahsoka series.
Chatham will play the right-hand man to Lars Mikkelsen’s Admiral Thrawn in the series, multiple sources have told Deadline.
Ahsoka is Disney+’s spin-off to the hit series The Mandalorian. Rosario Dawson stars as the titular Ahsoka Tano. Written by Star Wars Rebels co-creator Dave Filoni and executive produced by Filoni and Jon Favreau, Ahsoka will continue the character’s story from The Mandalorian. The line-up of directors set to work on the series includes Filoni, Steph Green, Peter Ramsey, Jennifer Getzinger, Geeta Patel, and Rick Famuyiwa.
Plot details for Ahsoka have been kept under wraps, but Disney and Lucasfilm recently shared a teaser trailer for the series at Star Wars Celebration London.

“Ahsoka” — the live-action “Star Wars” series starring Rosario Dawson in the title role of Ahsoka Tano — is the next live-action series coming to Disney+.
It’s based on a character writer and executive producer Dave Filoni created 15 years ago. Judging by the thunderous applause at the recent Star Wars Celebration, Ahsoka is a fan-favorite who will only grow in popularity with this upcoming show. Jon Favreau and Kathleen Kennedy also serve as executive producers.
Who is Ahsoka?
Ahsoka is a character created by George Lucas and Dave Filoni for the 2008 animated film “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and the subsequent animated series of the same name that ran from 2008-14 and for one final season in 2020. Lucas had wanted Anakin Skywalker to have a padawan of his own, thus Ahsoka was created. She was trained as a Jedi, but she broke away from the Order. And we all know what happened to Skywalker.

At the Star Wars Celebration fan convention in London, Lucasfilm made a major series of announcements on the future of “Star Wars.” Three new features are on the way, recruiting directors Dave Filoni and James Mangold, and four series, including “Ahsoka.” Produced by Jon Favreau and writer Filoni, the series will follow Anakin Skywalker’s beloved Togruta padawan, Ahsoka Tano. The highly anticipated event is set to premiere in August on Disney+.
“Star Wars” viewers ‘were first introduced to Ahsoka in 2008, in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” animated film. The film was first commissioned as an introductory arc to the TV series of the same name, which follow Ahsoka as she learned from her mentor, Anakin Skywalker, who will become Darth Vader.
Quickly Ahsoka became a “Star Wars” favorite. The character returned six years later in the “Star Wars Rebels” animated series, now a powerful Jedi warrior.

Ahsoka‘s Grand Admiral Thrawn will sound very familiar, now that it has been confirmed that Lars Mikkelsen, who voiced the villain in Star Wars Rebels, will return to play him on the live-action Star Wars series.
The casting was confirmed on Saturday at Star Wars Celebration in London — and in the wake of Mikkelsen repeatedly denying that he would reprise the role. (Just weeks ago, he told a Danish publication, “I haven’t heard anything about it…. [T]hey should have approached me, but they haven’t. So it must be someone else, unfortunately.”)

It's been a weird old time for JJ Abrams of late. Despite still being one of the most powerful creatives and producers working in the industry, he's seen his projects take a hit — a giant deal with Warner Bros. Discovery has seen slow development and several cancellations (including a Justice League Dark series), and Paramount has seen little forward movement on the Star Trek movie front – but it appears that the former relationship is finally paying off again as he as set up new series Duster at HBO Max starring Lost veteran Josh Holloway alongside Rachel Hilson.
Co-created with Latoya Morgan, Duster is set in 1972 in the Southwest and follows the first Black female FBI agent (Hilson) as she recruits a gutsy getaway driver (Holloway) in a bold effort to take down a growing crime syndicate. For those like me who pay way too much attention to these sorts of things, you may remember the news that filmmaker J.J. Abrams had signed an immensely profitable deal with Warner Bros. Discovery. This enabled him to write, produce, and direct various projects on both the big screen and small, with the freedom to sell certain projects to other distributors as well as producing original stories for Warner Bros. and HBO Max. Discerning readers may also recall that, in the years since, absolutely nothing has actually come from that high-profile agreement -- not for lack of trying, mind you. There was that double-whammy announcement of a "Justice League Dark" project and a spin-off of "The Shining" called "Overlook" that had nerds everywhere all hyped up. Unfortunately, those ultimately never came to fruition for various reasons, along with an incredibly expensive sci-fi series called "Demimonde."

HBO Max, J.J. Abrams, and Latoya Morgan plan to introduce audiences to Duster, a period drama set in the Southwest starring Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson. Duster is a concept Abrams and Morgan have been kicking around since April 2020, when it nearly got the green light from then HBO Max Chief Content Officer Kevin Reilly. The project remained in limbo since then, with HBO Max labeling it “in development.” The time has come for HBO Max to give Duster a series order after shooting a pilot episode.
Duster stars Rachel Hilson as Nina, the first Black FBI agent, who, in 1972, travels to the Southwest and gains a getaway driver, played by Josh Holloway. Together, the duo aims to take down a crime syndicate taking root in the area. Keith David, Sydney Elisabeth, Greg Grunberg, Camille Guaty, Asivak Koostachin, Adriana Aluna Martinez, and Benjamin Charles Watson also star.

J.J. Abrams and HBO Max are officially putting a series into gear.
The streamer has picked up Duster, a 1970s-set drama from Abrams and Latoya Morgan (Into the Badlands, The Walking Dead). Rachel Hilson (Love, Victor, This Is Us) and Josh Holloway, who worked with Abrams on Lost, head the cast.
Duster is the first series to spring from a nine-figure film and TV deal Abrams’ Bad Robot company signed with WarnerMedia (now Warner Bros. Discovery) in 2019. In April 2020, Duster was one of three Bad Robot projects announced for the yet-to-launch HBO Max, along with The Shining offshoot Overlook and a Justice League Dark project. The latter two have since been scrapped (Bad Robot has shopped Overlook to other possible buyers), as has Abrams’ long-developing sci-fi series Demimonde (which was for the HBO parent channel) after concerns over its projected 200 million-plus budget.

TIFF has never been as much of a marketplace as Sundance or Cannes — though distributors have been known to swoop in and pick up a “Still Alice” or “I, Tonya” for a last-minute Oscar run — but even by the festival’s usual standards, things were all quiet on the Western front this year.
In large part, that’s because most of the splashier titles arrived in Toronto with distribution already in place, which made it extremely difficult for acquisition titles to enjoy any time in the spotlight; even the buzziest of them all, Vera Drew’s beloved “The People’s Joker,” didn’t really make waves until the filmmaker pulled it from the fest in response to petty and wrong-headed legal pressure from Warner Bros.
While Daniel Goldhaber’s nail-biting eco-thriller “How to Blow Up a Pipeline” found a high-profile forever home with Neon, that deal was something of an anomaly...

The reviews are in for Don’t Worry Darling – and Harry Styles might want to look away.
The critical reception for Olivia Wilde’s upcoming sci-fi thriller, which stars Styles opposite Florence Pugh, has ranged from middling to poor, while the social media frenzy surrounding it has been captivating.
However, reporters have heaped praise on Pugh for her turn as Alice, a “1950s housewife living with her husband [Styles] in a utopian experimental community”.
While Pugh’s performance has been lauded, Styles’ performance as Jack has been labelled everything from “robotic” to “wooden”.
“Styles lacks charisma,” Geoffrey Macnab writes for The Independent in his three-star review.
“Jack is a one-dimensional figure, and the One Direction star fails to give him any hidden depth. Pugh is easily the film’s most vivid and compelling personality. She plays Alice in such fiery fashion that most other characters seem robotic by comparison.”

This Star Wars: The Book Of Boba Fett review contains spoilers.
The Book of Boba Fett Episode 2
How long will The Book of Boba Fett keep up the flashbacks? Probably a while, judging by the slow progression of the plot in both stories this week.
“The Tribes of Tatooine,” which was directed by Steph Green and written by Jon Favreau, has a double meaning. There’s the bureaucracy and assassins Boba and Fennec face in Mos Espa as the new big crime lords in town, and then there are the Tusken Raiders who helped Boba survive in the desert in the days after the sarlacc pit. The former in this episode serve mostly as striking but classic visuals who point Boba in the direction of the next scene. He learns that there are new contenders for the throne: the Hutt twins who conveniently arrive in town years after Jabba died.

Disney General Entertainment’s directing program is putting its money where its Mouse is: on the actual screen. That’s in addition to the program’s offerings of mentorship, shadowing assignments and advanced professional development. Aspiring directors in the program, which launched in 2001, have never before additionally been promised such directing slots. The announcement was made by Tim McNeal, senior vice president, creative talent development and inclusion.
“We are proud to evolve our directing program this season into a dedicated pipeline that will guarantee episodes to first-time TV directors, a critical stepping stone for professional advancement and opportunity,” McNeal said. “We are grateful for the support and partnership of our participating Disney productions,...

It’s Emmy Sunday, and that can only mean that our talented and blunt Gold Derby forum posters — many of whom are industry insiders hiding behind cyber handles — are busy giving us their reactions to the 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. They don’t not mince words when it comes to their thoughts on TV’s biggest night.
The ceremony had many cheering but left just as many infuriated when it came to the night’s winners and losers in the TV movie and limited series categories. What were the upsets that left them absolutely bewildered? Which winners were they cheering for the most? And which defeats struck our users the hardest?
Below, you can take a look at a sampling of the praise and pointed criticism that was leveled at this year’s ceremony. Read more and have your say here.

After a most unconventional awards season, the Emmys finally took place on Sunday. The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards was a night of numerous firsts.
“Schitt’s Creek” became the first series to win every major comedy award. “Watchmen’s” limited series win marked the first time a comic-book adaptation has taken home a top prize at the ceremony. Zendaya also made history with her win for lead drama actress, becoming the youngest-ever winner in the category (she turned 24 a few weeks ago) and being the first Black actor to take this trophy since “How to Get Away With Murder’s” Viola Davis in 2015.
The two series, along with “Succession,” dominated the comedy, limited series and drama fields, respectively, including nabbing the three top outstanding series trophies.
The show, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, was held virtually for the first time.
Here’s the full winners list:

The virtual Emmys are in the books, and in a first for 2020, not much went wrong! (Especially for “Schitt’s Creek.”)
Sunday’s first trophy went to Catherine O’Hara, who won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the final season of “Schitt’s Creek.” The Pop TV sitcom (by way of the CBC) then won the next six awards.
You read that right: “Schitt’s Creek” won all seven of its seven possible Emmys tonight. Insane.
The final Emmy of the evening, Outstanding Drama Series, went to HBO’s “Succession.” Showrunner Jesse Armstrong also won for writing on the series, and star Jeremy Strong took home Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Additionally, Andrij Parekh won an Emmy for directing on “Succession.”
HBO’s “Watchmen” also had a strong Sunday, winning four Emmys, including Outstanding Limited Series.

For the first time in recent memory, the Emmys has been a weeklong affair. Historically, the annual TV awards are given out on consecutive weekends, with Creative Arts Emmys bestowed before the nationally televised primetime celebration. This week, we’ve already seen multiple nights of Emmys, with five sets of nominees and winners taking center stage between Monday and Saturday.
Six months of virtual campaigning and a near-complete lack of traditional FYC events meant that the ceremonies weren’t the only thing that would be unpredictable this year. Predicting potential winners is the hardest it’s ever been, but we at least know that the festivities will conclude tonight with the Jimmy Kimmel-hosted Primetime Emmy telecast on Sunday evening.

“Watchmen” leads all programs in nominations for the 2020 Emmy Awards. Its 26 bids make it the Emmys’ most-nominated limited series since “Roots” received 37 in 1977. HBO’s superhero miniseries now eyes another record, as it contends to win more Emmys than any program ever has in a single year. “Game of Thrones” came close again last year, with 12 wins for a third consecutive season, but it never reached the tally of 13 set by “John Adams” in 2008. Last year’s Best Limited Series “Chernobyl” won 10 awards from 19 nominations across 18 races, making it the winningest limited series since “John Adams.”
“John Adams” had 23 nominations across 22 races; “Watchmen” is spread across only 19, so it needs a better hit rate. “John Adams” went into the main ceremony with eight Creative Arts wins under its belt. “Watchmen” is entering with seven, for achievements in casting, cinematography, costumes, editing, score and sound.
