- He started his Formula One career with the Sauber team in 1994 and went on to drive for them until the end of the 1996 Formula One season. His best result was finishing third at the 1995 Italian Grand Prix to get the first podium finish of his Formula One career.
- During the 2002 Formula One season, he drove for the Arrows team until they withdrew from the championship with 12 out of 17 races completed. He eventually rejoined Sauber to make a one-off appearance at the 2002 United States Grand Prix, before securing himself a full-time seat with the team for his final Formula One season in 2003.
- During the 1997 and 1998 Formula One seasons, he drove for the Williams team, winning his first race in the championship at the 1997 San Marino Grand Prix. He finished the 1997 Formula One season with a total of 42 championship points, originally as third overall in the drivers championship, before he was promoted to second following the exclusion of Michael Schumacher from the standings.
- After being released by Jordan ahead of the 2001 German Grand Prix, he was signed by Prost for the final five races of the 2001 Formula One season.
- Between 1999 and 2001, he drove for Jordan in Formula One. As a Jordan driver, he won the 1999 French Grand Prix and the 1999 Italian Grand Prix, which helped him to finish the 1999 Formula One season third overall in the drivers championship with a total of 54 championship points.
