Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal, opening up on their wedding documentary titled ‘RiAlity’, said it is a cheeky little attempt and a ‘life is stranger than fiction’ kind of thing. In October last year, the duo shared the first glimpse of the documentary. It is directed by Rahul Singh Datta.
In a conversation with Naman Ramachandran, international correspondent of the global entertainment magazine, ‘Variety’, at the Cinevesture International Film Festival 2024 (Ciff), Richa and Ali talked in detail about their wedding video.
Ali said: “This is being ‘thopoed’ on us because in our defence it’s our cameramen and a very close friend, Rahul. He brought four to five friends of his, they started shooting, documenting our lives. That started documenting us one or two months before our wedding.
Looking back, Ali recalled how Rahul had said to them: “I don’t want you guys to talk sitting on a couch...

Judith Godrèche, the French actor-turned-filmmaker who recently delivered the semi-autobiographical series “Icon of French Cinema,” has filed a complaint against director Jacques Doillon alleging rape, Variety has confirmed.
Godrèche filed the complaint on Feb. 6, the same day that she filed one against director Benoit Jacquot.
Interviewed by the local radio station France Inter, Godrèche alleged that she was raped twice by Doillon when she was 15 in the late 1980s. She claimed the sexual assault happened at the home that Doillon shared with his then partner Jane Birkin, during the shoot of “La fille de 15 ans.” Godrèche, who was at the time in a relationship with Jacquot, had the lead role in Doillon’s film and starred alongside Melvil Poupaud and Doillon himself. The movie came out in 1989.
“It was hallucinating. He got rid of the actor and took his place and all of the sudden he decided that there...

India looks to be moving closer to hiking its recently inaugurated cash rebates on international shoot spend in the country, including on animation and Vxf works.
The confirmation came at last week’s Animation Film Festival, as India showed further signs of expansion in animation on various fronts: “Heirloom,” an Annecy Residency project from India’s Upamanyu Bhattacharyya, bowed at MIFA feature film pitches, the strongest in memory, and though it didn’t take a prize, it was regarded as one of the section’s standouts; Annecy-backed, AniMela, India’s first international festival for animation, VFX, Xr, gaming and comics (Avgc-xr), revealed dates for its first edition in 2024.
Unveiled at last year’s Cannes Festival, Indian federal government incentives returs up to 30% of qualifying spend, up to a ceiling of INR20 million. Productions employing 15% or more of their labor force from India can access a further 5% of spend, capped at INR5 million.

The chief of the Annecy Film Festival, Mickael Marin, has addressed the tragic knife attack that injured five people, including four children, on Thursday morning (June 8) at the playground of a busy lakeside park, just days before the start of the international animation film festival.
“We are all shocked here. So far, the only thing that I can say is that we really hope that kids and other people injured will be fine. Of course, we will do something (to express our solidarity). For the time being, the only thing that we can do is to send our thoughts to the people who were attacked,” Marin told Variety.
Two children and one adult are severely injured, according to France Info. The suspect, arrested by police shortly after the attack, is a Syrian refugee who applied for asylum in France and eventually got it from Sweden, according to local reports. France...

Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj are the singers who brought composer M.M. Keeravaani’s Golden Globe-winning and Oscar nominated song “Naatu Naatu” from S.S. Rajamouli’s “Rrr” to life.
Featuring lyrics by Chandrabose, the energetic song, shot against the backdrop of the Mariinskyi Palace in Kyiv, Ukraine, shows stars Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr. in a dance-off.
Bhairava is the son of Keeravaani and has watched the composer work since childhood. He made his film singing debut in 2011 with “Rajanna” and has sung several hit songs since. He made his film composing debut with 2019’s “Mathu Vadalara.”
“It was quite simple. Rahul and I were instructed to render the song with an uninhibited attitude and maintain the kind of energy the song and the situation demanded. Also, getting an in-depth insight into the song situation also helped,” Bhairava says about the preparation for “Naatu Naatu.

It’s safe to say Steven Spielberg is an ‘Rrr’ fan, reports Naman Ramachandran of ‘Variety’ after watching a Zoom conversation between the auteur and S S Rajamouli, the helmer of the film that has got the world dancing to the beat of ‘Naatu Naatu’.
Spielberg, whose latest, ‘The Fabelmans’, is in the race for seven Oscars, praised ‘Rrr’ as “eye candy” and promised to return to India, where he last filmed ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ in 1976, for one of his upcoming projects.

Satyajit Ray’s neo-realist classic, ‘Pather Panchali’, is the only Indian film to feature in 117-year-old ‘Variety’ magazine’s first-ever ‘100 Greatest Movies Of All Time’ list. The list is important because it has been put together by more than 30 editors and writers of the magazine that invented the word ‘showbiz’. They include Manori Ravindran, the London-based international executive editor, and Rajinikanth’s biographer and ‘Variety’ contributor Naman Ramachandran.
Topped by Alfred Hitchcock’s slasher masterpiece, ‘Psycho’ (1960), the list’s top five movies are ‘The Wizard of Oz’ (1939), ‘The Godfather’ (1972), ‘Citizen Kane’ (1941) and ‘Pulp Fiction’ (1994).
Also included are memorable classics that are on the syllabi of every respectable film institute — from Charlie Chaplin’s ‘City Lights’ to ‘Casablanca’, ‘The Rules of the Game’, ‘Singin’ in the Rain’, ‘All About Eve’, ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ and ‘Seven Samurai’.

Apurva Chandra, Secretary for Information and Broadcasting Ministry, on Thursday confirmed plans to create a national streaming platform within the National Film Development Corporation website. The move is an integral part of plans to promote India as a global content hub.
“We are planning to do that on the website so that not just Nfdc co-produced and produced films, but so we are also able to curate and showcase shorts and other films. Because some of those who are producing in India are not able to get a market otherwise. The Nfdc platform can be used to focus on such talent and promote good quality content also,” Chandra told Variety.
He was speaking in Goa ahead of a panel at Nfdc’s Film Bazaar which discussed the content hub proposal.
Chandra also confirmed a focus on supporting the animation, visual effects and gaming sectors.

Bollywood megastar multi-hyphenate Shah Rukh Khan, one of Indian cinema’s global icons, will be celebrated with an honorary award by Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea International Film Festival.
Khan — affectionately called King Khan — has won most popular actor accolades three times at the Central European Bollywood Awards.
A thriving actor-producer, Khan has been making his mark for decades: his romance “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” has been playing nonstop for 24 years, and “Dil Se” was the first Indian film to break into the U.K. top 10. More recently, in 2018, he co-produced “Zero” through his VFX house Red Chillies Entertainment, but it underwhelmed. Undeterred, Red Chillies hit big with thriller “Badla” in 2019, and the company has its eight-episode political espionage series “Bard of Blood” currently running on Netflix. Inducted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2018, Khan also co-owns cricket teams Kolkata Knight Riders and Trinbago Knight Riders.

Philippa Campbell, one of the producers on “They Are Us,” a new drama about the aftermath of the Christchurch attacks on New Zealand’s Muslim community, has quit the project after a media backlash.
“I have listened to the concerns raised over recent days and I have heard the strength of people’s views. I now agree that the events of March 15, 2019, are too raw for film at this time and do not wish to be involved with a project that is causing such distress,” Campbell said in a statement.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who will be portrayed by Rose Byrne in the film, has also distanced herself from the effort.
The movie, to be written and directed by Andrew Niccol (“Gattaca”), was unveiled last week by sales company FilmNation Entertainment and CAA Media Finance. They have plans to present the project to international buyers at the upcoming Cannes virtual market.

“Wonder Woman 1984” will get a premium VOD release in the U.K. a month after the film’s premiere, Warner Bros. has confirmed.
As revealed exclusively by Variety earlier this month, the studio has taken advantage of a strict emergency Covid window agreed with exhibitors, which has drastically shortened the U.K. theatrical window. However, it appears the studio was unable to hammer out an exclusive deal with Comcast-backed pay-tv operator Sky, as was previously reported. The tentpole will instead be available as a PVOD offering on other outlets.
Warners confirmed Saturday that the Gal Gadot-led superhero sequel will be available as a 48-hour rental from Jan. 13, just slightly under a month after the film’s theatrical launch on Dec. 16. It will also remain in cinemas, where they are open, after Jan. 13.
The early PVOD release for “Wonder Woman 1984” is a major move on the part of U.

He will star opposite Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana. Seasons 5 and 6 “The Crown” will take the royal family into the 1990s and early 2000s.
Charles was previously played by Josh O’Connor, and news of West’s casting comes just under a month before the series returns for season 4 on Nov. 15.

Blumhouse Television is developing a seven-part Indian anthology series with executive producer Dina Dattani.
Each feature-length episode will explore the themes and mythology set against the backdrop of local Indian festivals, with the project specifically targeting the Indian audience.
The U.S. studio previously enjoyed success in India with genre fare such as critically-acclaimed Netflix Original series “Ghoul,” and most recently “Betaal,” produced in partnership with Sk Global Entertainment and Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment.
Dattani, a former media and entertainment lawyer who moved into production, is overseeing the series. Her producing credits include the Sundance Grand Jury-nominated film “Brahman Naman,” written by Variety correspondent Naman Ramachandran, “Hotel Salvation” and “Bombay Velvet.”
“Developing this anthology in partnership with Blumhouse, whose signature in this genre is second to none, has been really exciting, adding thrills, mystery and intrigue to our stories which are set against the backdrop of several Indian folk and regional festivals.

Production incentives for foreign films that shoot in India have been teased by government since Cannes last year. And again at the Film Bazaar last November. Now their introduction is being held up by the coronavirus and the widespread disruption to the film industry it has caused.
“We will announce as soon as shooting restarts,” said TCA Kalyani, Joint Secretary (Films) at India’s Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, speaking Monday on a Cannes Market panel organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry. She avoided revealing the all-important percentage of qualifying spending could be rebated, but nevertheless gave a couple of clues. She revealed that the incentives would cover co-productions as well as inbound foreign productions, and she said miniseries and series would be covered as well as feature films.
Producer Michael E. Ward said that meaningful location incentives in India could make the difference between shooting all...

India, Poland and some territories in the Middle East are the latest areas where movie theaters are rapidly being shuttered as the World Health Organization on Wednesday declared a global coronavirus pandemic.
In India, individual states have begun closing moviegoing venues. On Tuesday, Pinarayi Vijayan, chief minister of the Southern Indian state of Kerala, which has a population of more than 35 million, called for cinemas to shut down, with the Kerala Film Producers’ Association immediately following suit.
Meanwhile, the release of big-budget multi-lingual epic “Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea,” starring South Indian superstar Mohanlal, has been postponed. Some 20 movies are being shot in Kerala at the moment. These shoots are likely to be impacted as the number of confirmed cases in the state has risen to 17.
All movie theaters in the Northern Indian region of Jammu and Kashmir are also closed until March 31, it was announced on Wednesday by local officials.

What a difference a year makes. At the 2017 Industry Forum, part of the International Film Festival and Awards Macao, executives had concluded that disruptors to traditional models of distribution, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, are temporary, while film is forever.
Only 12 months later, two of the three topics discussed at the same forum took the disruption as granted and real, and moved forward into discussion. One of the key thoughts expressed in the discussions was that the film industry is in flux and forward visibility is no more than six months.
While no one announced the death of film at this year’s forum, a topic of discussion was whether film makers benefit from the disruption caused by content-hungry SVoD players. The table host for these sessions was Bobby Allen, senior VP, content, at Svod player Mubi.
