“There was not a moment I forgot just how crazy it was what we were asking them to do,” remembers Clea DuVall about casting the stars of her Freevee series “High School.” She and fellow showrunner Laura Kittrell chose twins Railey Gilliland and Seazynn Gilliland to play fictionalized versions of the real-life musical duo Tegan and Sara Quin, even though neither had any acting experience. Kittrell adds that on the first day of shooting, all their doubts melted away. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“High School” is based on Tegan and Sara’s autobiography of the same name, and the series is a queer coming-of-age story that chronicles a year in the twins’ lives as they first discover their talent for music while navigating a new high school. DuVall met the musicians backstage at one of their performances over 15 years ago and struck up a friendship with them. She...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Avenue 5 Season 2 Episode 4, “How It Ends: As a Starter and a Main.”] Life on Avenue 5 gets even more chaotic in the latest episode. Let’s just put it this way: By the end of it, Ryan (Hugh Laurie) has accidentally informed the passengers of the latest mishaps, including that they accidentally picked up a cannibal and that they don’t have enough rations for everyone for the eight years they’ll be in space. And this comes after a lockdown was initiated to catch the aforementioned cannibal. During it all, Doug (Kyle Bornheimer) was stuck when his foot got trapped when a door closed as part of that lockdown. Bornheimer discusses that bit of rest for Doug and teases what’s ahead. It seems like Doug gets a bit of a reprieve from everything by getting his foot stuck in that door and being given pain relief. Considering everything going on,...

When Clea DuVall first met the Canadian indie musicians Tegan and Sara Quin years ago, “I was not familiar with their music,” she recalled in an interview this week. Nonetheless, after DuVall — a prolific actor in movies such as “But I’m a Cheerleader” and “Argo” — was introduced to the duo when she joined some friends who were seeing them perform, the three women eventually all became good friends “through being in the same circles.” As DuVall began to explore directing, the first things she ever did were promotional videos for Tegan and Sara’s “Heartthrob” record, released in early 2013. Since then, she’s collaborated with them a number of times: Among other things. Sara Quin scored DuVall’s 2016 feature debut as a writer-director “The Intervention,” and Tegan and Sara wrote...

If you’re someone of a certain (gay) persuasion, all I have to say about “High School” to pique your interest is that it’s a) a new coming-of-age drama about twin musicians Tegan and Sara Quin that’s b) based on Tegan and Sara’s own memoir, c) co-stars Cobie Smulders as their mother and d) was created in large part by no other than Clea DuVall, whose performance in “But I’m a Cheerleader” among many other credits has long made her the subject of many a queer awakening. Whether these points immediately intrigue you or not, though, you should also know that the show is also great. You don’t have to know who Tegan and Sara are to appreciate their story, which explores loneliness, connection and longing with such palpable empathy.

HBO has released a new trailer for the second season of its original series, "Avenue 5." The show was created by two-time Emmy Award-winner Armando Iannucci and stars Hugh Laurie ("House") and Josh Gad ("Beauty and the Beast"). If you haven't watched it yet, it's the story set about 40 years in the future aboard an interstellar spaceship. It's owned by clueless billionaire Herman Judd (Gad in a ponytail and some pretty wild outfits), who hired mainly attractive actors and models for his crew, so everyone would look good on the bridge and please the passengers. The ship itself is actually run by a second crew who weren't deemed pretty enough to be seen.
The titular space cruiser, Avenue 5, was supposed to be out on an eight-week cruise, but the death of an engineer and the temporary loss of artificial gravity changed their course. Instead of eight weeks, the ship would...

Captain Ryan Clark, played by Hugh Laurie, is ready to just “sit here and wait for death” as an ill-fated spaceship heads straight into the Sun.
So starts the trailer for Season 2 of HBO’s “Avenue 5,” where food is running low and passengers on a luxury space craft will have to wait eight years before returning to Earth. Josh Gad reprises his role of billionaire Herman Judd, who owns the spaceship captained by Ryan (Laurie) as customer relations executive Matt (Zach Woods) tries to thwart the growing panic onboard. The second season premieres October 10 on HBO.

The second scene in “High School,” before even the title card makes an appearance, sees future Canadian pop star Tegan Quin absently staring at the already-iconic Icelandic pop star Björk. While the swan queen would serve as a sound role model for any artistic-minded youth, Björk’s words barely register with the brooding young woman, sitting in her basement, building resentment toward a sister who’s upstairs monopolizing their once-shared friend, Phoebe (Olivia Rouyre). Soon, in a fight ostensibly started over a loud boombox, Sara (Seazynn Gilliland) gets one heck of a shiner from her frustrated sibling, Tegan (played by Railey Gilliland).
But just as the sudden outburst of violence isn’t a sign of dark and dangerous events to come, Björk’s wisdom isn’t doomed to obscurity — not for viewers, anyway. “I think I’ve been playing music long enough to realize that if I’m having fun,...

The first four episodes of High School will premiere Oct. 14, with new episodes available every Friday on Amazon Freevee (formerly IMDb TV).
Produced by Amazon Studios and Plan B Entertainment, High School is a story about finding your own identity—a journey made even more complicated when you have a twin whose own struggle and self-discovery so closely mimic your own. Told through a backdrop of ‘90s grunge and rave culture, the series weaves between parallel and discordant memories of twin sisters growing up down the hall from one another.

Spoiler Alert: The story includes details about the series finale of NBC’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine,“The Last Day”.
Eight seasons, spread across two networks –Fox and NBC–with a brief cancellation in between; Brooklyn Nine-Nine finally turned off the lights at the precinct with an hour-long series finale that brought back a slew of familiar faces from the series’ past.
However, in its home TV market of NYC, Brooklyn Nine-Nine didn’t quite get a proper sendoff with the final episode airing outside of primetime, at 7 Pm, to make room for the Giants game on the local NBC station.
After Season 8 which took on a more serious tone, tackling issues of police brutality, levity returned in the finale as Jake (Andy Samberg) surprises the squad with a final heist to commemorate Amy’s (Melissa Fumero) last day at the 99th precinct after her big promotion in the previous episode. After The Big Sick, a reunion between Michael Showalter and Kumail Nanjiani should leave me more enthused. Add Issa Rae, and that’s doubly true. Alas, The Lovebirds sings no sweet songs of romance or comedy throughout this madcap date-night-gone-deadly scenario. Scripting relies upon the same quirky relationship notes we’ve time after time seen bent out of shape then hammered back into form. Nanjiani and Rae represent two of today’s comedic powerhouses, but The Lovebirds doesn’t support such a claim. “Love is hard, and it’s harder when there’s a murderer on your tail.” Laughable in conceptualization, but unfortunately familiar as criminal proceedings attempt to tug at our heartstrings.
Jibran (Kumail Nanjiani) and Leilani (Issa Rae) are four years into their bicker-constant relationship and *well* out of honeymoon period. It’s en route to a dinner party that the couple realizes they’d be better off separated,...

A good comedy pairing is always a joy to watch, almost regardless of the material. When a comedy’s premise can be high quality as well, laughs are inevitable for those watching the film. Such is most certainly the case with The Lovebirds, a very funny new movie that is hitting Netflix this week, after seeing its original release by Paramount delayed. A sale to the streaming giant ensued, and now, the embargo has lifted. Powered by a dynamic comedic duo of Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae, The Lovebirds is always an enjoyable watch, even when the plot gets a little bit ridiculous. The film is an action comedy, centering on a couple’s wild night. Jibran (Nanjiani) and Leilani (Rae) are an always arguing couple. A documentary filmmaker and an advertising executive, they’ve gotten to the point where they plan to break up. En route to a party,...

How good is Pixar at making audiences cry in the last 10 minutes of a movie? So good that the studio serves up a moving finale to “Onward” when everything that comes before that ending has been rather spotty, particularly when compared to the studio’s greatest achievements.
It’s the same strategy behind a band saving its hit songs for the encore — make the audience leave on a high and they’ll forget the less successful parts — but while the film’s sentimental climax will have filmgoers walking into the lobby still dabbing away their tears, it doesn’t entirely expiate “Onward” of its many flaws.
The film is set in a world where magic once thrived, where pegasuses shared the sky with dragons while centaurs roamed the land. Then someone invented the light bulb, and the denizens of this reality decided electrical engineering was easier to learn than wizardry,...

There are moments in life when you wish you could bring someone down from heaven, spend the day with them just one more time, give them a hug, kiss them goodbye, or hear their voice again. One more chance to say: "I love you!"
This is exactly what Director Dan Scanlon's "Onward" is about. The film is a fantasy adventure quest in a universe populated with elves, pixies, mermaids, orcs, cyclops, unicorns, trolls and centaurs.
The narrative bookends with the audience being told, "Long ago, the world was full of wonder? and most of all it had magic, but over time the magic has fallen out of fashion in favour of the convenience of modern technology," while the story specifically revolves around two elves named Ian and Barley Lightfoot, brothers living in a suburban fantasy land, called New Mushroomton. Even when a new Pixar movie isn’t up to, well, Pixar’s regular high standards, there is still animated magic to be had. That’s the case with Onward, a sweet-silly-slapdash tale about two pointy-earred elves: shy, introverted, teenaged Ian Lightfoot (voiced by Spider-Man Tom Holland) and his blustering, bumbling older brother Barley (voiced by Star-Lord Chris Pratt). Both boys have daddy issues since the old man died a few years back — not surprising, given that parents tend to have a high mortality rate in the Disney/Pixar universe.

The only character who is not allowed to stoop to toilet humor on Avenue 5, episode 5, "He’s Only There to Stop His Skeleton Falling Over," is a standup comedian who can't get laughs. And he's got a captive audience. Jordan Hatwal can't talk about it, but he's stuck in a contract which got extended way past the flickering lights that tell him to get off the stage. Everyone on the ship's already heard the jokes he rehearsed and he's trying to keep it fresh, but he's hobbled by the committee. Hatwal represents Avenue 5, but the ensemble hobbling just made the show engaging.

On the heels of the launch of season 1, HBO has renewed comedy series Avenue 5 for a second season.

Avenue 5 Episode 4
In the opening montage of Avenue 5, episode 4, " Wait a Minute, Then Who Was That on the Ladder?," we see astronaut Spike Martin (Ethan Phillips), kibitzing on the bridge. He's trying to look at the dials and sensor readers which the crew are expertly fingering, especially the hand model who was born for the job. Captain Ryan Clark (Hugh Laurie) is doing his best to keep the astronaut away for the faux equipment because he's the only one on board who might be able to actually read what they say.
The irony is this skill could find a solution to clean up the captain's mess, except the astronaut is also ill-equipped to do it. Spike Martin was the first Canadian to land on Mars.

The passive voice is crucial to the title of “Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made,” a Disney kid-detective caper with a clear enough moral: that owning your errors and apologizing for them is an essential part of growing up. If any individual mistakes have been made in the film itself, however, they’re as hard to pick out as any particular flourishes of inspiration: This wholesome, gently paced adaptation of cartoonist Stephan Pastis’ quirkier children’s book (the first in a bestselling series) feels more or less assembled by committee. That’s to be expected from an all-ages diversion intended for mass consumption on the Disney+ platform. It’s more surprising, however, coming from independent writer-director Tom McCarthy. In his first feature since 2015’s Oscar victor “Spotlight,” the quiet humanity of McCarthy’s filmmaking meshes oddly with the material’s zanier demands, finally reaching an anodyne middle ground.
